her hands and feet were singed in this fire. she desperately tried to get everybody out of the condo this morning. he was able to get two small kids out but she couldn't reach her own daughter. when firefighters eventually got to the 3-year-old, she was curled up under her crib on the second floor. this fire broke out at about 3:30 a.m. at a complex on french town road in the kitchen. it wasn't a big fire but did produce a tremendous amount of smoke. and family members tell me she and two other women were asleep up stairs with all of the kids. when the fire first broke out. they probably had no idea because officials tell me that the smoke alarms in the unit were all disabled, they weren't working. one man who lives a few doors down heard screams for help before firefighters arrived. a second man ran to the front door of the condo trying to get to them but the smoke was too thick.

it's something he says will haunt him for the rest of his life. >> because i have grandkids, that's the first thing that came to my mind, try to go up stairs and try to rescue her or something. but i just didn't do it. i didn't have the courage to do it. let's put it that way. i know i'm beating down myself, but that's how i feel. >> a lot of smoke and carbon monoxide and without the breathing apparatus this the fire department wear a civilian would be rendered unconscious. and smoke rises and that would make it higher on the upper floors. so for them to try to get through the front door would be next to impossible. >> reporter: and now counselors were brought in to help some of the firefighters who located the child. the trauma of this is tremendous. tonight the two women inside the condo, they're both here if stable condition along with the two kids who did survive.

and now at 6:00, you will hear more from the folks who were there for her during the agonizing moments when her daughter was trapped inside the condo. for now we're live in bridgeport, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. a deadly raging fire in bronx. people escaped the flames by climbing out of windows. when it was over, one man was dead. the fire started in the wakefield apartment of the man who died. neighbors say he was unable to walk and cried for help but it was too late. the family living nearby took in victims including a couple with a baby. >> we offered them shelter, water, juice, things to try to calm them down. the baby was having difficulty breathing and my hospital took them to the hospital to get the baby checked out. >> families who lost their homes are being provided with

temporary shelter this even. investigators say the cause of the fire does not appear suspicious. today the first sunday of the new year and the final sunday of the nfl regular season. play-off hopes on the line the jets. we are in the newsroom with highlights from both games. >> reporter: all the jets wanted was to control their destiny. none would matter if they couldn't take care of business today. all the jets needed was to beat the bills this afternoon. that proved to be quite a challenge. the offense was solid down the stretch and struggled today. threw the intersection in the end zone and then another with less than two seconds to go. the jets lose in buffalo. the materials win in cleveland so that means officially out of the play- offs. for the giant, it wasn't

only one reason, it might have been the head coach's final game. after 12 12 seasons, fans say it is bittersweet. most fans we spoke with say it's time for a change, time for new blood but at the same time, they say the coach had had an amazing run and appreciate everything he's done for this franchise. two super bowl champions afterall, and now appears to be a question of how he goes out. and now fans we spoke with say they hope that he will be allowed to write his own last chapter. >> thank you to tom for all the years you put up with us. i would rather him go out retiring then have them let him go. it should be on his term, not when he is forced out. >> we're all happy for him, without a doubt. that's why we're here watching the game. we're going to go in late in the game and give him a standing ovation because that's what he deserves.

get the standing ovation in the tunnel, exiting the final game. and fans say if and when he does retire, they'll remember him as one of the greatest ever and of course with the super bowl championship rings. channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. the fdr drive in manhattan was shut down for several hours following a chain reaction crash that involved three police cars. police say a driver stopped short right around noon on the southbound lanes in east harlem, causing the officer driving the first police car to slam on the brakes. it was then rear ended by two other police cars and another vehicle that followed close behind. >> it was pretty loud. we were up on the roof and looking at the side of the building and we just heard this thundering thing. and we looked up and see this pile-up. >> emergency workers rushed seven officers and another person to the hospital with minor injuries. new york city's first

taken -- appears to have taken place in queens on new year's day. officers found her body just before 11:00 friday night. they say the 19-year-old was face down in bed and unresponsive. medical examiner ruled the death a homicide after finding evidence of strangulation and blunt force head trauma. police say a suspect is now getting a psych is logical evaluation at the hospital. a new jersey man behind bars tonight after authorities accused him of sexually assaulting a minor. investigators charged the 52- year-old with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact. a girl told police he attacked her after a new year's eve party at his house in upper saddle river. he is in the county jail after failing to pay $150,000 bail. a vehicle from an arrest on long island is connected to a murder in virginia.

led them to a stolen vehicle. when officers pulled it over, they say they found him behind the wheel as well as a loaded assault rifle in the car. williams was arrested and detectives say the vehicle is part of a homicide investigation. williams faces weapons and theft charges. police are connecting a series of hotel burglaries and they're hoping that you can help catch the suspects. the nypd says he hit manhattan hotels at least three times during 2014 and 2015. including the st. regis and new york palace. he has been spotted in both guest rooms and a hotel office. stolen items include computers and a wallet. a few month months after the debut in new york city, chick-fil-a at herald square is temporarily shut down the. aamong the violation, a december 24th investigation reveals evidence of fly, food

nearly 100 families are without water in new jersey this evening because of another water main break. this break in jersey city, no word on how long the water outage will last as crews work to fix the problem. the cause of the break is still unknown. this is not however connected to another water main break on friday. more water woes in the midwest but life is starting to return to normal as flood waters go down near st. louis. rivers that hit record levels a few days ago are starting to recede but are still about 4 feet above flood stage. amtrak is beginning to restore service. and relief in two towns after a water plant re-opened.

for many homes. as missouri recovers, tennessee braces for a major flooding threat. authorities informed people along the misriver in the -- the mississippi river in the memphis area that their homes may be evacuated. the water that fell over the past week is now rushing down river towards them. >> we just got notification that said if we need to evacuate, just be prepared and that's what we're doing. >> just make sure your insurance has been paid for and prepare for the worst. >> river water is started to reach flood levels in one community. boat ramps in the area are under water. >> thank goodness none of those issues here. but we are starting to feel the chill as everybody heads back to work. >> and we will have true mid- winter cold for a couple day, for tomorrow into tuesday. so if you have any of the really warm clothing like the parkas and the 180s, the earmuff, you got to get them out for tomorrow because it's

the wind will make it feel colder. we head outside right now, it's actually been a decent day out there. temperatures up in the middle 40s during the afternoon. a wind though coming in from the west at 12 miles per hour. pretty look down toward the holiday-lit empire state building. the high of the day up to 45 after a morning low of 35. so temperatures are still a good five to eight degrees above normal. back in 2000, 16 years ago, got up to 64 balmy degrees. the coldest air mass of the season arrives tomorrow. tomorrow night will be the coalest since back in march. i think we get down the to the middle teens tomorrow night, even some single numbers in the northern and western suburbs. and then bright but cold on tuesday with less wind out there. and then temperatures start to moderate by later in the week. so much so that by the time the next storm system gets into the

probably if the form 41 in newark. 49 at white plains. and down to freezing in monticello. and closer to the arctic front which is pressing in from upstate new york. and along the front, some heavier snow squalls affecting areas east of lake ontario. and you can't rule that out, maybe a snow shower in the far northern and western areas overnight. watch those temperatures drop down below freezing by 7:00 a.m. and the city well down into the 20s areas north and west. and right around daybreak is when the frontal passage will take place and there could be a flurry in and around the new york city area. now tomorrow during the day, you saw that temperature around 7:00 a.m., just barely below freezing. by 5:00 p.m., we have dipped into 20s. so if anything tomorrow, the temperature will stay teddy or gradually fall during the course of the afternoon. with the wind, it will feel harsh. by tomorrow night, down into the teens and single numbers

and barely recovering tuesday. and the wind chill, it could get dangerously cold by late tomorrow night, feeling like below zero in places like sussex and monticello. to limit your outdoor exposure. and your exclusive accuweather forecast for tonight. partly cloudy, brisk and cold and down to the about 29, blustery, noticeably colder than today. a spotty flurry tomorrow. the high up to 32 tomorrow. and then temperatures falling into the 20s during the afternoon. clear to partly cloudy and chris and cold tomorrow night, down to 14. that's the coldest temperature since early march when we got down to 12 degrees. a lot of sunshine on tuesday but cold. only 30 for a high. and not quite as harsh on wednesday, 40. back up to the middle 40s on thursday. and mainly cloudy friday, and up 40s and may begin to the rain late and also at night and that can last into saturday. and then clear out for the second half of next weekend, 45 by sunday. evidence of maybe more cold

it was a critical day for both new york football teams today but for very different reasons. the jets had everything on the line as they looked to end a five-year play-off drought. but it was an upset kind of day in buffalo and the giants couldn't end their already disappointing season with a win

i think the winter started earlier than some jet fans expected. >> it's an unfortunate day, that's for sure. last week the jets took control of their anode's any but it turns out topping their biggest rival wasn't actually their biggest challenge. no that came today as they went to buffalo needing a win during the final afc wild card spot but it was all bills to start. taylor taking care of this one himself. the quarterback with the 18- yard touchdown. the bills would lead 13-0. the jets would chip away. to marshall, taking over the franchise record for touchdowns in a season. they still trailed in the 3rd. new york making the move. the 21-yard score. and both top 1,000-yards this season. the jets have a chance but the offense melted down in the 4th. leading the way, pick in the end zone. and then in the final two

grabbing the pick. and the jets would get it back but he seals it with the bill's third interception of the quarter. the jets upset by buffalo. they miss the play-offs. well technically the giants didn't have anything to play for today with the team well out of the play-off picture but realistly they had everything to play for from pride to possibly sending their couch out in style. tom coughlin's future still up in the air as the giants hosted the eagles. and fist possession, the longest run of the season for murray. 54-yards for the touchdown. 2-quarter, the giants trying to climb back in. manning finding the nine-yard strike. giants still looking for the lead in the 3rd. manning airing out to randall. 45-yard score and now 27-21. but the excitement didn't exactly last long. manning throwing again, gets

a look at tonight's top storieses, a 3-year-old girl is dead after smoke and flames filled a connecticut condo complex. five other people including two children were hurt in the fire they recall morning in bridgeport. a chain reaction crash involving several police cars shuts down the fdr drive in manhattan for two hours. it happened in east harlem around noon. emergency workers rushed seven officers and another person to the hospital with minor injuries. good evening again, everyone. >> candidates for president are entering the final stretch to the iowa caucuses now less than a month away.

it's cutting all ties with iran. iranian diplomatic personnel have been given 48 hours to leave saudi arabia and all diplomats in iran have been called home. iran warned of devine revenge after learning of the executions that included a prominent clerk. government rescuers and volunteer aid workers say the flow of refugees is steady despite cold weather and rough seas. as winter sets, in, the crossing from turkey to greece is becoming more dangerous because people continue to attempt it. most are from syria's civil war. france says its war planes have destroyed a site used by isis to produce store weapons. the overnight air strikes

the jets were acting jointly with the u.s.-led coalition. france intensified the military action against isis after the extremist group claimed responsible for the attacks in paris. the offices in san bernardino, california where a deadly terror attack happened are expected to re-open tomorrow with they went on a rampage that killed 14 people and wounded 21 others. they later died in a shootout with police. offices will reopen and the conference hall where the shooting happened will remain closed indefinitely. a rally in defense of ranchers has turned into the occupation of government buildings in oregon. a maly sha group has taken over the headquarters of a national wildlife refuge in a remote part of the state. the group sees the proper -- the group seized the property after a demonstration in support of a father and son convicted of arson. the son who had a stand-off

prom. >> reporter: this just another part of an already fierce legal fight. schneider filing suit in november trying to stop them from operating in new york, calling them illegal gambling operations. something both companies have repeatedly denied. those sites reportedly took in more than $200 million in entry fees from at least 600,000 customers in new york in 2015. the lawsuit aims to have the companies reimburse each of them for losses plus pay a a$5,000 penalty for each violation. fanduel vowing to fight this amended suit. and draft kings tells abc news is lawsuit is based on a mismanning of fantasy sports competitions. for now, both companies are still allowed to operate in new york. a judge has yet to decide whether that will continue as the case goes to trial. channel 7 eyewitness news.

when a new york firefighter asked his girlfriend to marry him, the reaction of everybody who witnessed the proposal was priceless. >> we spoke with the couple whose big moment has now gone viral. >> reporter: it was the internet that brought david royal and natalie moye together. >> we met two years ago on match.com. >> match.com. >> reporter: so perhaps it makes sense that the video of their proposal is also getting a lot of attention on the web. royal whose with the fdny 0ed her classroom at ps 361 to give a fire safety demonstration to the students. >> he asked the student, who wants to see her dress up? and of course all the kids wanted that. >> reporter: so as his buddy filmed away, she got suited up. he had slipped the ring box like this into the left glove.

two florida women are alive after two drivers passing by an overturned suv stopped to help. the suv went off the road and into a pond in jacksonville last night. the women were trapped inside the partially submerged vehicle. one man driving by stopped and flagged down a second driver. >> he was screaming out, the car is under water. get up to the car and it's just completely under water. we had a wrench and we were trying to bust the window. and he got it open. once he got the seat belt off, we went to yanking and pulling. >> night of the women nor their rescuers suffered any serious injuries. well the first sunday of the new year and if you're still waiting for winter, it's coming. >> it's here in a big way tomorrow and into tuesday. tomorrow night is going to be our coldest night since march. we are expecting to get down to 12 degrees if the park. >> that's been a longtime.

it in herement a view toward midtown from the camera in queens. camera shaking just a little bit in the win. 41 -- in the wind. and 41 now. and clouds beginning to increase after a mainly sunny day and increasing ahead of a arctic cold front that will sweep through first thing tomorrow morning. in the meantime, temperatures going down by a degree or so each hour. we are down to 35 by midnight. and that west, northwest wind coming in and increasing after midnight. and highs today up to 45 in the park, well above average and hit the 50-degree mark at toms river. and you have fallen to freezing in monticello. still in the low 40s, pretty mild at kingston. 41 in west orange right now. 49 at belmar. and 40 at islip. you see the arctic cold front through upstate new york causing snow showers near buffalo and syracuse and extending to near albany. that will move through overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning.

behind it, just north, i mean just north of the u.s. and canadian border. we are in the single digits right now. and that air is making a beeline toward us by tomorrow night. and you can see through tuesday, that arctic air kind of opening up the flood gates for the air to move in as the front sweeps off to the south right down to south carolina by tuesday. the air will get down there. and lows tonight down to about 29 or so in the park. about a25 in white plains. and down to 18 -- about 25 in white plains. and down to 18 in monticello. 32 is the high tomorrow. that's early in the day. during the afternoon, temperatures will fall into the 3020s. and partly sunny and windy and it will feel like it's in teens all day with the wind chill. there could be a flurry or snow shower. so we have a couple cold days coming up and then we moderate and then the following week, so next week, january 11th through 15th, more waves of cold air are allowed to press in from

but i think the storminess should stay suppress to the south. that's how we see it right now. we will keep an eye on it. exclusive accuweather forecast looking like this, 32 tomorrow, colder, it will feel like the teens all day. down to a 14 for temperature late tomorrow night and single digits in the suburbs. and bright but cold on tuesday, 30. back up to 40 on wednesday. so this is just a two-day stint with some really cold air. 44 on and mainly cloudy friday and could be rain by day's enon friday and lasting into saturday. and then 45 and clearing out by next sunday. so even though we're so cold tomorrow and tuesday, it warms up. >> thank you. all right, just in time for your new year's resolution to lose weight, a food coach has found a way to help keep those pounds off and it has nothing
