it's freezing when jeff smith sports the faux fur. it's back in style. >> the faux fur it is. right now according to our accutrack weather alert app which you can download, 23 degrees. we have a wind coming in about 15 miles per hour. wind chills are below 10 degrees right now. we're in a very exposed location right along the hudson river. we run around talking to some people. they're coping but surprisingly not really complaining. >> reporter: long overdue arctic air arrived on a blustery wind today as temperatures tumbled through the 20s despite the bright sunshine here in new jersey. >> what do you think about this first blast of winter? >> i was really enjoying the warmth. >> reporter: the chill was especially bitter in exposed areas like this terminal in weekawken. for someone who works on these ferries all day, the wind is the real challenge. >> once you're out there down by the battery it's like if you're not dressed right, forget about it. >> reporter: customers don't

we'll begin with sports anchor rob powers. >> the giants have been around tom coughlin, head coach for 12. those 12 years could eventually land him fame. but a rough stretch the last three years has the giants in search of a new head coach. coughlin stepped down late this afternoon after meeting with team ownership saying it's the best for all involved. coughlin, his family and the team. under coughlin's leadership the giants did win those two super bowl championships. his time as a whole very successful but that four straight seasons without a playoff appearance. three straight losing seasons. another rough ending yesterday. coughlin in a statement. obviously the past three years expected. as head coach i take responsibility. tomorrow the team will celebrate what wept right. >> he definitely has not failed.

the fan base to say the coach was moving on. >> i think it's about time. i think he was a great coach but sometimes you need a change to boost morale or get people going so i think he did good. >> time for a change if it has to be. you've got to consider the fans. >> reporter: this is a bittersweet pill for many giants fans to swallow. after all, coach coughlin brought them two super bowl wins. both over tom brady and the new england patriots. but the disappointments over the last four seasons makes fans realize someone has to pay the cost for losing. >> a change is needed. a new voice maybe, a new face for the organization. maybe that will spark some winning ways in the future. >> former governor sent out a tweet this afternoon about tom coughlin, calling him a great

that's the latest live from outside of meadowlands, the giants stadium. anthony johnson. brooklyn tonight, a 15-year-old has been charged in the murders of her mother and her mother's boyfriend. the two were killed in the sheepshead bay house several days ago but their bodies were not found until last night. eyewitness news reporter darla miles is at the 61st precinct with the latest from the investigation. >> police say this is not act of self-defense that 15-year-old destiny garcia murdered her mother and her blood. they say she confessed to the whole thing and they say according to her, her mother had been physically abusive. >> she was sweet. she would compliment me, always wondering how the boys are. >> reporter: the teenage girl who lived in this apartment seemed to be more social and well known in the building than the adults with whom she lived.

15-year-old girl had been taken in to custody for a double murder, they skipped a beat. destiny garcia charged with two counts of murder ii as an adult. >> i was hoping it wasn't her. >> floin -- 49-year-old male and 39-year-old female were found by police. >> reporter: after not being heard from for days, police found rosie sanchez and nunez sunday evening around 6:30 in they say garcia shot her mother while she was sitting in a chair. the boyfriend was shot and stabbed and found face down on the floor. >> she'll be charged with murder ii. domestic violence, homicide, and shooting. right now we're trying to find out where she got the gun. >> reporter: investigators believe the couple was killed on december 27th but four days later while both lifeless bodies went undetected, investigators say garcia rang in the new year in times square with a friend. >>

live with them but said basically it was the mother that was physically abusive to her in the past. >> 15-year-old destiny garcia being held here at the 56th precinct. charges she faces as an adult even though she's only 15 years old. another big part of the investigation from chief detective robert boyce is where this 15-year-old got the illegal handgun. darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. new at 6:00, two people are recovering tonight after an argument turned violent. one person was shot. another was hit in the head with a shovel. it happened in queens. it happened around 2:00 this afternoon in jamaica. two vehicles at the scene were also found damaged. police are still investigating what prompted the violence. both people involved were taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. a search is underway

suspected of killing a mcdonald's employee in the bronx. 28-year-old adam garcia was stabbed early this morning outside a mcdonald's in the kingsbridge section. he worked there as an overnight manager. police say the attacker is a homeless man who frequented the restaurant. investigators say after garcia asked him to leave, the suspect stabbed him in the parking lot. taking a quick look at wall street right now. the new year beginning with a rough start for your 401k investments. worries about a slowdown in china and rising tensions between saudi arabia and iran led to a sell-off. the dow was down 450 points but rallied back. however, it still ended the day down 276 points. the nasdaq lost 104. s&p 500 down 31 points. as we continue with eyewitness news at 6:00, nypd releases its final numbers on crime in new york city last year. we've got details on what's up and what's down.

new at 6:00, the nypd released the final crime statistics for 2015. the department insists the city is getting safer. however, there were 17 more murders in 2015 than the year before.

department insists overall crime is down 1.7%. eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer takes a closer look at the numbers. >> reporter: the giant new year's eve celebration closing out 2015 without historic incident to tens of thousands of people enjoying a safe thanksgiving day parade, the nypd is also now revealing a noticeable drop in most areas of crime. >> the overall trend in all of our crime categories continues to go down. >> reporter: while overall crime was down 1.7% compared to last year, police officials reveal since january of 2014 crime is down 5.8% overall. still though there are problems. >> murder, which was the 4.5% increase. rain which was up about 6%. and robbery which is up about 2%. >> reporter: shootings too were up and still occur, police say, by individuals who had criminal histories. >> gun arrests had gone up almost 10% compared to the year

>> reporter: two of five boroughs though, manhattan and the bronx, saw a slight increase in crime. >> concern to us is some of the robbery conditions, particularly on the midnight in and around clubs. >> reporter: 2015 saw the introduction of new technology enabling officers to respond quickly to crimes. >> in about six months' time we've given out 20,000 smart phones and 1,000 tablets. >> reporter: additional anti-crime cameras will be placed in areas to augment the shot spotter program. while the new year brings new challenges there is the anticipation of additional officers. >> 2,000 more officers and patrol strengths by this point next year. >> reporter: encouraging measures, they add, to build upon. tim fleischer, channel 7 eyewitness news. students in a town of westchester county will be back in class tomorrow after

police are searching for the people who damaged dozens of buses used by the school district. windows were smashed and tires cut on about 40 vehicles. school officials say there was no way to safely transport the students crews worked through the day to make the repairs to the entire fleet. just ahead on eyewitness news, we'll check back with lee goldberg who is monitoring the tonight. looks so crisp out

a week ago we had people stopping by, looking in, leaving leisurely, waving. tonight not a single person. >> have you turned on your heat at all in the past month? >> a little bit. sparingly. >> now the energy costs start to go up a little bit as we start to get our cold back. kind of off and on for a little bit.

the 7-day. outside we go. we have a chilly night. a guy in shorts going to the gym. he's thinking, i thought it was 70 in new york in the winter. winter was not canceled. it is back. and there are folks trying to get across with the big coats and hats and gloves. temperature right now is at 21. air is dry, northeast wind gusting at 25. that was really overnight. daylight hours are in the 20s. we're not talking about record warmth anymore. we're talking about our first day that will average below normal since november 30th. that's incredible. the core of this cold shot is tonight in to tomorrow. this is the coldest since march 6th. we'll go down we'll struggle to 30 degrees tomorrow. that's despite sunshine. a that will lead to a storm over the weekend which is probably going rain. might be a window in the upper 40s by then. but now it's all about cold.

would go down after 12 years with the giants and a lifetime in the game, coughlin and the giants made their announcement late this afternoon after meeting earlier in the day. both sides move on. coughlin, it's been an honor and a privilege to serve for new york giants. in addition to delivering two super bowl titles, tom represented us with class and dignity and restored the pride to our entire organization. laura behnke has been with the giants all day long joining us from the training facility. >> when we talked with the giants this morning, it was before tom coughlin announced he was stepping down but the players had already met with morning. they sensed what was very emotional day. >> reporter: a difficult day was made even harder as the giants wrapped up another losing season and later were forced to say goodbye to tom coughlin. >> along the journey it's been great with coach as far as

and him teaching me things. just how to be a man. >> he definitely has not failed we as players. >> reporter: he was emotional as he talked about the only nfl head coach he's ever known. >> the meeting today, could be the last one with coach coughlin up there. it was tough. >> reporter: throughout the entire locker room the sentiment was the same. players loved playing for calm coughlin. >> when i was younger i didn't get it. now i get the benefit he had. >> he's a great coach, determined motivator, father figure. >> i love coach coughlin. he's always going to be my coach. >> overwhelmingly the players did not blame coughlin for the 6-10 record. instead they blamed themselves. no one we

coaching change, but a coaching change they must now deal with. as for coughlin, he will address the media tomorrow morning. laura behnke, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> we'll see you back there tomorrow. we'll stay on top of the giants. for now we move on to the jets who watch the nfl playoffs move on without for a fifth straight season. today the jets cleaned out their lockers and headed for home. end of season physicals, meetings, then gone. they'll be watching the playoffs at home for a fifth straight year. rex ryan has been around for every one of those disappointments. this time he was on the other side of the field. the jets' former coach keeping his old team from moving on. beat the bills, get in to the playoffs. but they couldn't. 22-17 jets lost. as disappointing a regular season game as they've ever had, they controlled their own destiny. they were destined to fall short. three interceptions in each of their final three drives. the record, 10-6. not good enough it turns out the jets' season ends.
