we start with president obama kicking off his last year in office with executive actions on gun control. >> so today the president will announce his plan to sidestep congress and pursue measures aimed at reducing gun violence in america. >> generating outrage from gun advocates and the presidential candidates so let's turn to lana zak in washington with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kayna and kendis. in advance of today's presidential announcement, some gun advocates are denouncing the executive order before it's even been announced while gun show sales are now hitting record highs. >> join or renew your membership. get into the gun show for free. >> reporter: across the country gun sales have been especially busy. >> any time that the president gets up there and starts talking gun control, people actually, you know, go and get guns. >> reporter: potential gun restrictions were a motivating fwashth for this buyer. >> because all the gun laws, all the strict rules coming out, and

people want to be protected. >> reporter: today president obama will announce new actions that are expected to focus on mental health issues, update the background check system and close the so-called loophole that allows people to buy them without background checks. >> these are not only recommendations that are well within my legal authority and the executive branch, but they're also ones that the overwhelming majority of the american people including gun owners support and believe in. >> reporter: the announcement already getting reaction from the presidential candidates. >> i will not only keep it going, i will do everything i can to try to convince the congress hopefully with a democratic senate to pass sensible gun safety measures. >> president obama is committed to continuing to abuse his executive power in every way, shape and form.

she doesn't like executive action, but thinks legal gun owners don't mind background checks. >> they want to carry a gun, has a carry permit like i do is going to not mind, you know, having some kind of verification. >> reporter: the president and his critics do agree on one point, closing off that so-called gun show loophole would have done little to stop many of the mass shootings we recently experienced as a country, however, gun control advocates say it's an important first step in keeping guns out of the hands of some of the people who shouldn't have them kayna, kendis. >> lana, thank you very much. we will carry the president's announcement live this morning on abc. >> and first we heard from some of the presidential candidates right there, they're being joined on the campaign trail today by what some are calling the big dog himself. >> bill clinton focused on policy and his wife's

but the former president mostly ignored her opponents, not so for hillary's rival donald trump who has been blasting bill clinton's checkered past. abc's cecilia vega asked him about it. >> reporter: donald trump says your past is fair game. i've got to ask you, you keep coming up on the trail. is it fair game? >> republicans have to decide who they want to nominate. i'm trying to tell now the democrats in the country why i think hillary would be the best president and i think there's always attempts to take the election away from the people. >> trump, though, doubled down and call bill clinton, quote, one of the great women abusers of all time and called hillary an enabler. >> okay, so one more note about trump. he is catching flack for his first tv campaign ad. it shows people scrambling like ants across a mountainous border

building a wall along the mexican border but that shows a border in mexico and the difference was irrelevant because the image was just meant to show what america is rapidly becoming. and ben carson took heat from a person who showed up at his town hall meeting. it followed an interview carson gave last march in which he said being gay was a choice. well, he later apologized but those words came back to him last night as he was posing for pictures with supporters. >> what do you think about being gay. >> did you choose to be gay. >> i chose to be gay. >> it's a long conversation. it's a long conversation. >> [ bleep ]. >> well, the questioner, ben smiled then walked away. nothing was made of it after that. but carson continuing having his photograph taken.

this is a very rare sight overnight in los angeles, part of one of the busiest free ways in the country closed down everyone tirely, the 5 was shut down during rush hour as police chased a violent criminal suspect driving the wrong way. he only stopped after crashing into several vehicles. when he tried to get away on foot police shot him and he later died. he was one of the area's most wanted suspected of a month-long crime spree.

day that a group of armed anti-government militia men are holed up inside a federal wildlife refuge building in a remote part of oregon and claim the land does not belong to the federal government and are backing ranchers dwight and steven hammond ordered to serve a five-year prison sentence for an alleged arson on federal land. the fbi, though, is now stepping in hoping for a peaceful resolution. wall street began the year with a bit of a thud. the worst start to a year since 2008. the sell-off triggered by bad news about chinese manufacturing activity so the dow lost 276 points. the nasdaq was off 104. the s&p gave up 31. asian markets were down again overnight but so far u.s. stock futures are up. starbucks is kicking off the new year with a brand-new espresso drink. it goes on sale today made from steamed whole milk with full

during a duck hunting trip. his body was found near a lake. his wife elizabeth sharing on instagram that he dragged himself out of the water before the final stages of hypothermia set in and experienced no pain during his final moments. >> terrible. also this morning, a young woman kidnapped in her own car made a daring escape at a pennsylvania gas station more than 100 miles away. rachel stevenson's escape caught on video driving back to college when a man jumped in her car and drove off with her. they were forced to stop when the car ran low on gas. the alleged kidnapper told stevenson to look up directions on a phone but instead she texted her boyfriend. >> wow. >> i was getting all these texts from my boyfriend being like, where are you, please answer. and like just remembering like the sound of my dad's voice and thinking to myself, the last memories they have of me going to be them begging me for one

1st ten weeks premature. addison, kinsly and savannah weighed barely three pounds at birth healthy enough to go home yesterday after a lot of planning by mom and dad. >> we've done a lot of planning. we've prepared it for awhile now and did deliver a little early so it's kind of -- that wasn't too expected but we're just going to go home and try to do our best. >> so brad and stephanie harris say the girls will have ankle bracelets color coordinated so they don't get them mixed up. several teams are changing coaches and general managers, three have declared their desire to move to l.a. the san diego chargers, oakland raiders and st. louis rams all want to move to los angeles. they submitted their applications as soon as the season was over. the applications will be presented at a league meeting next week in houston, l.a. has been without an nfl franchise
