he was just kind of like out there waiting for something, i guess waiting for me. >> reporter: amanda says she doesn't know the man, has never seen him before, and never said a word to him. as the pair walks toward 7th avenue with lightning speed he lashes out, cutting her with either a box cutter or a knife. >> something hit me in the face and i thought maybe he punched me. i thought maybe i broke my nose because i felt love. >> -- because i felt blood. >> she went to the hospital and needed seven stitches. >> what would you say to this man? >> i don't know what i did to deserve that. i guess i was in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: detectives are asking the public from help, tracking down this suspect. amanda's friends are by her side. >> i got her ice cream so we're just going to try to make the best of this and move on hopefully. >> amanda told police this man

years old, between 5'7" and 5'10" tall. he was last seen wearing that bright red jacket, possibly with nba lettering on it. underneath he had on a green hoodie and black pants. coming up at 6:00, what amanda says she plans to do differently. you'll hear more from her coming up at 6:00. kemberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness news. an active investigation in the bronx after a disturbing discovery. the body of a woman. it was discovered stuffed in to the crawl space of a basement apartment of a home in bay chester. police believe it may be the body of 39-year-old andrea caruth. her 61-year-old father lived in the home. her boyfriend reported her missing on sunday. he talked about how he hopes she's still alive. >> i'm just praying for her safe return.

. >> caruth was five months pregnant with her first child. a vigil is scheduled for tonight. right now police are questioning a person of interest in a fatal stabbing at a mcdonald's in the bronx. 28-year-old adam garcia was attacked by a man with a knife outside the mcdonald's in kingsbridge early monday morning. the father of a young child died after suffering multiple stab wounds. detectives say his attacker followed him in to the parking lot in to a dispute. a long island priest caught red-handed in the middle of a drug buy at a motel. cops arrested him with crack cocaine but the priest revealing to cops he has a tragic reason for using it. eyewitness news reporter stacey sager is in mineola with new details released by police today. >> he is a roman catholic priest. he was busted with crack cocaine this morning. but what he tells investigators is that much more shocking.

complaint in this case, the priest tries to explain his alleged crack habit and said it all started after his sister was brutally murdered. >> reporter: nassau police were staking out this motel in bethpage this morning on one case when suddenly they stumbled on another. an alleged drug deal between two men but one of them turns out to be a catholic priest. 63-year-old robert lubrano and his alleged drug of choice -- >> a substance believed to be crack cocaine and a silver colored metal pipe with what appeared to be crack cocaine residue was recovered at the scene. >> reporter: what's really disturbing is according to the criminal complaint, lubrano tells police he had been smoking crack ever since his sister was murdered. it was back in october of 2014. 66-year-old patricia ward was decapitated by her own son. her head just left

farmingdale in a case almost too gruesome to conceive. >> everyone thought at first it was a halloween prank but it turned out to be a murder. >> reporter: patricia ward's son killed himself shortly after. her son, grappling with psychosis, after the death of yet another family member. meanwhile she was a well liked professor at farmingdale state college but her brother's arrest today a sad example of how tragedy has a way of piling on. lubrano was released but no one answered the door here at his home in farmingdale. >> we did reach out to the diocese today to get more information on father lubrano. they have yet to return our phone call but investigators priest. he didn't work in one island. he now faces a class d felony charge for drunk possession but he was conditionaly released in to drug treatment. we're live at police

sager, channel 7 eyewitness news. police have yet to figure out who murdered north salem socialite lois colley but have busted two men for stealing hay that was worth tens of thousands of dollars. police say the thefts were discovered during the murder investigation. but they do not believe the two crimes are connected. colley was found dead in her laundry room in november. surveillance video shows a suspect took a swing at a 61-year-old man. this was inside a bodega in tree mont and this was a violent attack, hit with a shopping cart. it started after the two exchanged words when the suspect bumped in to the victim. developing news out of wall street. stocks taking another major hit over concerns about

over north korea's bomb claim. the dow tumbled, closing at 16,906. it's the second time this triple-digit hit. investigators were also concerned about yet another drop in oil prices. more concerns at the u.n. the u.n. security council today condemning north korea after the tiny nation claims to have test tested a powerful nuclear-- to have tested a powerful nuclear bomb. sandra bookman is in the news room with the latest. >> that's the big question tonight. did they or didn't they conduct a hydrogen bomb test? north korea is calling this a self-defense measure against a potential u.s. attack. while other nations around the world are calling it an unacceptable and irresponsible provocation and a clear threat

>> the initial analysis that's been conducted of the events that were reported overnight is not consistent with north korean claims of a successful hydrogen bomb test. >> no evidence that north korea has conducted a successful nuclear bomb test. that's how the white house reacted to this televised announcement on north korean state media. a claim that a 5.1 magnitude earthquake near the country's nuclear testing facility yesterday was caused by north korea's first successful test of a hydrogen bomb. a weapon that can be as much as 10,000 times more powerful than an atomic bomb, like those dropped on hiroshima and nagasaki during world war ii. while there was immediate concern and condemnation from around the world with the u.n. security council calling an emergency meeting -- >> this act is profoundly

we have breaking news right now. there's been an accident on the garden state parkway which is causing major delays. shannon sohn is live in newscopter7. this is the car in question being hauled off? >> they just pulled him away. here's the bad news. that was the last car in a three-car accident that slammed in to a construction zone and all of those cars went through not one, not two, but several of those

amy freeze, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> do keep your tickets handy and you can watch the numbers as they're drawn tonight here on channel 7 before eyewitness news at 11:00. we have more on the breaking news we told you about earlier. an arrest in connection with the disappearance of a missing pregnant woman in the bronx. >> eyewitness news reporter jim dolan at the police precinct. he's got the breaking details for us. >> police have just arrested 61-year-old william caruth for the grizzly, the brutal murder of his own daughter, 39-year-old andrea caruth. she was five months pregnant at the time of her murder. she operated a daycare center. police say the father killed her by strangling her and then beating her. she was five months pregnant. she was scheduled to find the gender

police found her body in a crawl space in the family's home. she lived there with her father, operated the daycare center there. police found the body and they have now charged the father, 61-year-old william caruth, with the murder. remember they were also talking with the boyfriend of the woman, the father of that unborn child but he was not guilty of the murder. they arrested the father. they believe he is the person responsible for the murder. police should move him to central booking within the next couple hours. as we get more details we'll bring them to you live. for now, reporting live from the bronx, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> obviously the question is why. coming up, why more than a thousand pounds of chicken is being recalled tonight. >> a local college band's hoverboard. what school officials say will happen to students if they're found with

whose body was found in the bronx has now been charged with her murd er. william caruth is accused of strangling and beating his daughter andrea. we had several reporters following the story. we'll bring you late details as they become available to us. all new at 5:00, a mother comes face to face with a man who shot her 2-year-old son all while the convicted killer maintains his innocence. >> you see an innocent man here and send me to jail for a crime i didn't commit. >> you left my girls without their father. >> that man was sentenced today to 25 years behind bars. >> prosecutors say he shot 2-year-old david pacheco. he was killed while sitting in his car seat in his parents' minivan. marcus solis is in the melrose section with more on the courtroom drama. >> not uncommon for relatives of victims to become emotional during sentencing, but today's

the number of disturbances caused by a defendant who said he's being framed. >> this is the parents' worst child. you are a coward in my eyes. >> reporter: that was only part of the fireworks inside of a bronx courtroom as 10 years of emotion boiled over. hemple was sentenced today for murdering a if anyone thought he would show remorse or take responsibility, think again. murder. i have been framed. >> reporter: 2 -year-old david crossfire of gunfire. the gunfire was in retaliation of a street fight earlier in the day. another person was initially charged then cleared. the trail but two years ago hemphill was guilty.

was picking out a casket for my son. while you and your family was safe in north carolina, i was burying my son. there are no words for the pain you have caused me and my family and will continue to cause forever. >> reporter: hemphill had been living under an assumed name. prosecutors say his life on the run as well as dna on a distinctive blue sweater prove his guilt. but during multiple rants the 37-year-old maintained his innocence. >> a 10-year-old case and you guys needed closure on his case so you put an innocent man in jail. that's what you did. >> they pay people to take the stand against him. they did all they could do to send him away. >> despite no previous criminal, a judge sentenced him to the maximum. 25 years in prison. as he made painfully

a homeowner in a former mining community in new jersey forced to shell out $10,000 to fix two large sinkholes on his property. the sinkholes opened up in the backyard of andrew's home in minehill last week. one of the holes is 19 feet deep. years ago new jersey opted out of a federal program to help homeowners pay for sinkholes on their property. >> unfortunately we're not allowed to spend public funds on private property which makes sense. you wish you could do more. so the steps we're taking is we obviously give them guidance from an engineering standpoint on how to repair this issue. >> officials are trying to find a way to help the homeowner who will not be compensated by insurance. fortunately the home is not in jeopardy. a man is charged with sexually abusing a child at a house of worship in new jersey. police in wayne arrested card of sparta.

10-year-old girl at the worship center. charges include sexual assault and child endangerment. bail has been set at $150,000. also in new jersey, police are looking for an 18-year-old stabbing suspect who's described as armed and dangerous. darren baron of clifton stabbed two young men in their arms sunday morning. both victims were treated and released from the hospital. police say baron's mother is failing to cooperate. she was arrested this morning. a storm of controversy for people in one new jersey town. they're manding the -- they're demanding the removal of a sandy monument. they say a trade group's monument is not only an eyesore, it may be prohibited. the state's environmental office says that the monument is not allowed under a coastal facilities act. the borough is waiting for the trade group's response before taking any action. the man accused of supplying guns to the husband and wife terror team in san

today. enrique marquez faces five counts in the deadliest terror attack in the u.s. since 9/11 on an attack that left 14 people dead at a southern california office building. abc's brandi hitt has more on his court appearance. >> reporter: enrique marquez, smiling in past photos, appeared before a federal judge shackled in a jumpsuit, pleading not guilty to five charges including lying when purchasing two assault rifles that were later used by his friends and tashfeen malik in the san bernardino terrorist attack, killing 14 people. marquez is also charged with conspiracy to support terrorists for alledgedly planning other attacks with farook in southern california schools and highways as early as 2011. those plots were never carried out. on tuesday the fbi also interpreted to the public, pleading for help. they've traced the killer's whereabouts the day of the massacre but say there's a

traffic cameras or witnesses. >> we're missing 18 minutes of their time. we want to ensure if they make contact with anyone that we don't already know about. >> reporter: investigators believe that's when the killer couple may have ditched a computer hard drive that remains missing. they've searched this nearby lake but did not find any evidence. >> the fbi insists this appears to be an inspired terrorist attack with no indication it was directed by anyone overseas. enrique marquez' trial is scheduled to start next month. nearly the entire coast of california is being battered by another el nino storm that's bringing heavy rains, flooding, high waves, and even blizzards. freeways in los angeles are filling up with water. dozens of car accidents are blamed on the weather. this is the third storm to batter california since the weekend and forecasters say it is the most powerful. another storm is right behind it

a man accused of posing as a veteran to get a lease deal on a luxury car while nypd investigators say 42-year-old jeremy wilson went to boston to fraudulently lease a bmw while posing as a wounded war veteran. police seized the car in lower manhattan and left a note asking wilson to call them back about the car. when he did that, officers arrested him. police got a warrant and found goods including military uniforms, cash, and passports. wilson is charged with grand larceny and

if you shop at wegmans the food market is recalling more than 1100 pounds of marinated chicken products that never got inspected. wegmans is recalling its italian marinated chicken breast cutlets and its brown sugar barbecue season chicken breast cutlet. also included in the recall is the wegmans ready to cook garlic and fennel season so far there have been no reports of any problems with anyone eating any of these products. oculus riff now has a price tag and release date. the cost, just $599. shipping date, the end of march. preorders were accepted beginning today. the head set provides a virtual reality experience. it's pretty cool. customers can only order one though which comes with the head set, censors and x box controller. >> it's expensive. a milestone among the

drizzle. 45 to 50 degrees. then on sunday it's mild but we've got a good soaking coming. here's the good news about sunday is that this soaking may be first thing in the morning and the afternoon may start drying out and best case scenario, the clouds could break. now looking at the weekend which initially looked like a pretty wet weekend from start to finish, really looks like we're focusing on sunday morning for a lot of rain and then improvements on the book ends. we'll turn colder next week. in fact only 36 on tuesday trending down and maybe a few snowflakes on wednesday. this doesn't look like a big storm might be just offshore but got to watch it closely. maybe snowflakes in the air and definitely a colder pattern next week. a high school student in new jersey is alive tonight after he collapsed during a basketball game. alive because school staff had the tools to save him, something they did not have six years ago. >> when another student died at the school for the family who

battle to protect all students. new jersey reporter toni yates has more. >> reporter: a child is alive thanks to these two men and this defibrillator machine, mounted steps away when they desperately needed it when a visiting freshman basketball player during the game started having health problems. >> the young man was jogging down the court, coming toward me, and i noticed he bumped in to another kid and collapsed. >> the freshman coach at colonia seemed very adamant that we needed an a.e.d. as fast as possible. >> reporter: he had the defibrillator at the child's side seconds before he went down. >> it said advise the shock, stand clear, and it shocked him. within 10, 15 seconds he started to take breaths again. >> my granddaughter called me. when she told me what was going on at the school, just dropped. >> reporter: her grandson, 17-year-old was a star athlete
