he was charged with the brutal murder of andrea carruth. the student teacher was reported missing for days. yesterday a cadaver dog made the griggsly discovery in the -- grisly discovery in the family's home. it was in a self dug hole. police say the crawl space was a closet, a few feet from the father's bed. last night some expressed shock over the arrest but not all. >> she was a beautiful soul. very calm, even keeled person and full of life. full of compassion. >> i miss her. i love her. >> reporter: andrea carruth was scheduled to find out the sex of that baby today as a doctor's appointment.

marcus solis, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> marcus, thank you. police have arrested a man accused of slashing a woman who was walking to work in manhattan. the attack on west 23rd street in chelsea was captured on surveillance video. 41-year-old kari bazemore is facing weapons and assault charges. police say he has more than 30 arrests on his record. the victim received stitches in her face. she tells eyewitness news she was shaken up but she is otherwise okay. traffic is flowing again on the gowanus expressway hours after all westbound lanes were shut down due to a horrific multicar crash. newscopter 7 was over the scene near 7th avenue in bay bridge brooklyn as emergency crews examined the wreckage. as many as four vehicles collided. one person was trapped inside a car that was crushed and wedged against a big rig. >> he wound up in the one part of the car that was not crushed, an area about three

that's where his upper body was. he was lateral across the seat with his legs under the dashboard. he was in a lucky position. >> too close for comfort. the victim is in the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. another bad day on the dow as it tumbles into the triple digits. investors fear china's slumping economy and continued drop in world oil prices will hurt the u.s. economy. the dow is down 197 points, 16,709. china's main stock index fell again today triggering the second automatic halt to trading this week. it caused asian currencies to drop. oil tumbled to the lowest level in 12 years. scary moments on long island. cars burst into flames and the fire spread to a home where people were inside. it happened before 5:30 this

burkett is live at the scene where arson investors are involved in the case, >> reporter: that's right, shirleen. outside the home, steps from the shores of lake ronkonkoma, i spoke to the homeowner, a local contractor. he asked not to appear on camera. he said he is fine but he says he has no idea who would want to do this. well, what the arsonist did was destroy two cars and his contracting van. the fire spread to the garage and did severe damage to the side of the home. it happened around 5:30 this morning, shirleen. neighbors woke up to see a fireball across the street. one neighbor banged on the door to wake people up. the homeowner and one other person inside the house escaped without injury. the fire comes as a shock to the neighbors and the homeowner. the arson squad, local fire marshal were on the scene all morning. it's being investigated as a crime.

over the next two days an accomplice shot a police woman and a kosher supermarket killing four hostages. we want to turn to the miners rescued in upstate new york. a total of 17 miners were trapped nearly 80 stories underground. they were trapped in an elevator that stopped working at a salt mine in lansing. marci gonzales joins us with >> reporter: officials say all 17 men are in good health after a scary morning on the job. we are told they managed to stay positive and crack jokes passing the time on this cold morning until they were finally rescued. the sounds of relief after nearly ten hours of anxiously waiting. 17 miners trapped nearly 900 feet below ground in upstate new york. all finally safe on solid ground. >> they persevered the best way they could. impressive how well they managed the situation to be honest with you.

starting their shift at the deepest salt mine in the country when the elevator they were in stopped working. >> people are on it. >> reporter: miners huddling together for warmth as local fire and police rushed in to help. >> manpower needed to backfill out in lansing, rescue. >> reporter: using this crane to lower a basket below ground lifting several workers at a time to the surface. >> we practice mine evacuations regularly every year and, so, that practice is coming in to play today. >> reporter: despite being shaken and freezing, the miners waited there at the scene until the last of their coworkers were rescued. >> their spirits are tremendous. i don't know. i'm inspired by them to be quite honest with you. >> reporter: governor cuomo ordered a state investigation to figure out what caused the

make sure that something like this doesn't happen again. david? >> thank you, marci. pedestrian recovering after getting hit by an mta bus in queens. it happened at queens boulevard and jamaica after 7:00 a.m. the pedestrian was taken to jamaica medical center with nonlife-threatening injuries. police are investigating. new at noon, crews are cleaning up piles of debris that fell out of a tractor trailer on a new jersey turnpike causing a major backup during the morning rush. police say the truck, which was hauling some kind of metal toppled over near exit 7 in lawrence township around 9:00 a.m. all northbound lanes were blocked. the truck driver was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. new york governor andrew cuomo making a major announcement about the future of the javits center. >> we will expand javits from 2.1 million square feet by

it resulted in officials closing schools for the week as a precaution in the area. the armed group is protesting prison sentences for nevada ranchers convicted of arson. texas police officials firing the state trooper involved in a high profile traffic stop. the move coming after he was indicted for perjury. he claimed that sandra bland, pictured here, was combative and uncop operative when he pulled her over. she was later found dead in her jail cell. the family is happy the trooper was fired but believe he should be charged with battery and false arrest. new at noon, the government is releasing new guidelines to reduce obesity and prevent chronic diseases including diabetes and heart disease. the u.s. department of health and human services says americans need to cut sugar, salt and fat from the diet and eat more fruits and veggies. the recommendations include

el nino fueled storms triggering massive flooding across southern california. you can see the problems continue. emergency crews forced to rescue several people including overturned truck. lifeguards rescued two men river. today's storm battering the coastline after days of rains washed away hillsides and flooded streets. officials closed the beaches in los angeles county due to the high surf and dangerous run off. b bill evans, you have been -- tracking this. >> i am trying to see an official word from anyone in drought. how has this-- >> where do we measure up now. >> the whole state is getting rain and the flows down. los angeles gets a lot of the water from northern california and san francisco in that area, down south. so, i mean, even though we see helpful. >> it is.

dramatic video of a deadly tornado, a firefighter survives a frightening fall and a rescue mission to free skiers. we begin with frightening moments in texas. a powerful ef-4 tornado passed over a major highway. a traffic camera caught these images of the twister roaring over a highway near dallas two weeks ago. the tornado had wind gusts between 166 and 200 miles per hour sent debris flying across the roadway. eight people inside the cars were killed. more than 1100 families were forced from their homes because of the treacherous weather. horrifying moments as a firefighter falls through the roof of a victorian mansion in maine. flames shot up around him as he drops through the shingles. amazingly another firefighter is nearby. he reaches down to pull the first guy to safety as the two hold on other firefighters

the wow. despite all of this, no firefighters were injured. an amazing rescue is caught on camera at a ski resort. 75 skiers got an unexpected thrill when they were trapped on a gondola sunday after an electrical failure. rescuers had to strap guests into harnesses and dangle them on a rope high above the trees and snowy peaks to air lift them to safety. others were rescued by helicopter from higher sections of that lift. if you are scared of heights, not the moment for you. >> absolutely. thank you. case of mace stack ken identity nearly landed a tv host behind bars. police in oregon posted surveillance videos of a man accused of robbing a bank at gunpoint. soon investigators were flooded with tips. they say is that mike rowe, the host of dirty jobs? he said he was in an airport when he saw the post on social media.

with select plans. call now. our top stories this afternoon, a dad from the bronx charged in the murder of his pregnant daughter. william carruth facing a judge bail. police say he beat and strangled his 39-year-old daughter andrea and hid her body inside a crawl space in the home they shared. suffolk county arson squad is looking into a fire in ronkonkoma. police said a vehicle parked in front of the house caught fire early this morning. the fire then spread to a pair of vehicles parked in the driveway then the house.

old victim was walking on bergen street in park slope when someone grabbed her from behind and inappropriately touched her. when the victim screamed the suspect ran way. the slashing of a young woman in queens may have been a targeted attack but the suspect may have gone after the wrong person. the victim, who is an exchange student from china may have been the victim of mistaken identity t. a man wearing surgical gloves and a mask slashed her face and throat as she walked to school last month. her host family said a note was left at the house monday from the supposed attacker saying the girl was mistakenly targeted and he would come back to cut the right teen. a homeless man charged in the murder of a mcdonald's manager. rafael gonzalez turned himself in to police. investigators say he stabbed adam garcia outside the kingsbridge mcdonald's after following garcia into the parking lot.

an eyewitness news exclusive. five correction officers at rikers are in the hospital after being beaten by teenage inmates. we obtained exclusive photos of the guards after the mass assault. the young attackers came from a new rikers unit for what is being called uncontrollable inmates. guards had to use chemical spray to gain control of the unit. the inmates used to be in at administrative segregation. mayor de blasio said that pole was not humane and ordered a change. >> until the mayor walks in the shoes of a new york city correction officer that has his other her eye socket busted out then he will have a difference of opinion. >> the attacks come two months after the head of the correction officer's union warned the mayor's new pole would be recipe for disaster and lead to officers getting hurt. donald trump pushed himself on to the modern political stage questioning where president obama was born. now the g.o.p.

they used google cardboard, virtual reality viewer to convert mri scans into a 3-d model. they successfully performed the lifesaving surgery last month. very cool. bmw is showing off a car without mirrors at the consumer electronic show in las vegas. the concept car has video cameras in place of mirrors and sends the video to a screen where the center rearview mirror would normally be. bmw says the system eliminates blind spots. to drive in the u.s. because mirrors. a few minutes at a slot machine turned into a few million dollars for a lucky woman in new jersey. she walked away with a $3 taj mahal casino. the jackpot winner was at the penny machine for five minutes when all of a sudden the bells and whistles started going off like crazy. >> it was really great.
