a record-setting jackpot and it just keeps growing! $900million up for grabs and tickets are selling like wildfire. but right now an nypd officer in the hospital and recovering after being shot in the foot a party in the bronx turning into a violent melee on the officer threw himself into the gunfire. good evening. despite being injured, that officer returned fire and he managed to shoot the 19-year- old suspect. he is in custody tonight. >> 25-year-old officer sherrod stuart is in stable condition at lincoln hospital. he is expected to be okay. the shooting came exactly four years to the day that stuart became an nypd officer. eyewitness news reporter kim has details from the bronx. >> reporter: it was early this

of people were partying in a space above that chase in bank. a fight broke out inside and spilled on the street and a cop was shot. >> he had distinguished himself already in this situation and further with his quick thinking and brave actions. >> reporter: mayor bill de blasio talking about nypd officer sherrod stuart a member of the anticrime unit shot in the right foot while responsibilitying to a chaotic scene on -- while responding to a chaotic scene in the bronx. this is a photo of the 25-year- old released by the nypd before heading into surgery. it was just after 2 a.m. when police say one to two hundred people began fighting with bats, knives and guns and what cops describe as a jumpup party not held at a licensed location. police say officer stuart was shot by 19-year-old christopher rice. the officer returned fire and struck him four times. >> this suspect has a criminal history of five prior arrests over the last several years including arrests just yesterday. 9 a.m.

charge of fare beating which he was release from court at 11 p.m. last night three hours before the shooting involving our police officer. >> reporter: police say this semi-automatic firearm was recovered at the scene along with three additional firearms and a knife. five others were stabbed. leaders denounced the violence. >> this is a message to the individuals carrying these guns. you're going to jail! you're going to put these guns down and stop taking innocent lives through stupidity! there was no needs for guns and nights for a party. >> reporter: officer stuart is expected to recover. he was shot on the four-year anniversary from when he joined the nypd. it runs in his blood. his father is a detective with the department. stefan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. new information tonight the suspect in the shooting of a police officer in philadelphia is now charged with attempted murder. edward archer is held without bail.

drunk driver. he was helping a motorist on sunrise highway and brookhaven early this morning when another car rear-ended him. the officer a nine-year veteran of the suffolk county police department suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. now, the suspect has been identified as carlos morocho. he ran from the scene and was arrested later. he faces several charges including dwi and leaving the scene of an accident. police in brooklyn investigate the rape of a woman by five men. police say the woman was walking with a friend near osbourne playground in brownsville thursday night. five men walked up and pointed a gun and told the friend to leave. according to authorities, the suspects held the woman at gunpoint and took turns raping her. the friend ran and told police but by the time cops arrived on the scene, the suspects were gone. emergency workers rushed the victim to the hospital. we are looking at some significant changes in our weather.

problem a lot of it. >> an inch or two of rain in the area. we haven't had a lot of big rainstorms recently. we could have some localized street flooding in some areas. it's all about the cold returning next week. a live look toward the empire state building the top of the building the spire being temperature right now 47. wind from the east at 7 miles per hour. it didn't feel great because we have the cloud cover. it was damp out there at times but the normal high is only 38 degrees. next seven hours, looks like that rain probably stays out of the city until after one or two clock in the morning. there still could be a touch of drizzle or maybe a sprinkle during the evening hours but the steady and heavy rain that is waits until after midnight so the downpours develop late tonight into tomorrow morning. i expect the heaviest rain to be from, say, 3 a.m. to about 11 a.m. and then it moves out quickly tomorrow afternoon. but in the meantime some

lying and poor drainage areas. and then we get record warmth 60 degrees. but temperatures will really tumble to below freezing after midnight tomorrow night so standing water could freeze. we'll have enough wind to evaporate a lot of water before that happens. 39 sussex. 36 monticello. 50 at toms river. futurecast is showing that rain coming in around 3 a.m. really getting heavy right around daybreak, across the entire region. could be talking about some flooding downpours at that point. by noontime, the heaviest rain is shifted northeast into new england. we just have a few scattered showers left over. but check out that temperature. up to 59 at that hour. by 5 p.m., maybe a little bit of sunshine developing just before the sun goes down over parts of new jersey then the cold front moves on through. and then look at this. by monday morning, we are back down to freezing in new york city and there's even colder air waiting in the wings by wednesday.
