this is new york's number one news, channel 7 eyewitness news with joe torres and sandra bookman, laura behnke with sports and jeff smith with the exclusive accuweather forecast. now, eyewitness news at six. a young life on long island taken by a stray bullet. police say there's a big break in the case; and new developments in the brooklyn gang rape. the victim and her father speak to eyewitness news about the good evening, everyone, i'm sandra bookman,. >> and i'm joe torres. we begin with that developing story on long island. nassau county police arrested a year-old dejah joyner. she was killed by a single bullet as she ate dinner in her

>> eyewitness news reporter lucy yang is in hempstead with reaction from dejah's family. >> reporter: sandra, and joe, three months later, police have finally made an arrest in a fatal shooting that broke so many hearts here in hempstead, long island. tonight for the first time, we hear from the victim's family. 12-year-old dejah joyner was a beautiful little girl who was doing the right thing in the right place at the right time, yet tragedy found her. she had just made sandwiches after school and was serving her brother his plate when a bullet came flying through her living room window striking the innocent child in the head. dejah was pronounced dead at the hospital. it happened last october here on the 200 block of dartmouth street in hempstead, long island. three months later an arrest has been made. 20-year-old jaquan keller was arrest today. detectives believe he is

family with a bullet meant for someone else. dejah's grandfather, and great grandmother responded to the arrest and spoke to us just a few minutes ago. >> i can't say exactly what i in hell. taking my granddaughter away so young, such a young age, and i had just got off the phone talking to her. making lunch. school. >> why did he do it. that's the only thing i can say, why did you do it. >> reporter: now, the family has since moved from their home. too many painful memories there. as for the man under arrest, jaquan keller, he's scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in first district court. we will be following this case closely. live in hempstead, long tonight. i'm lucy yang for channel 7 eyewitness news. >> lucy, thank you. in brooklyn, detectives are searching for the gang that raped a teenager in a

video of the group entering a nearby bodega before thursday night's attack. kemberly richardson spoke with the victim and her father. she is in brownsville this evening. >> reporter: the father of this 18-year-old girl tells me he had no choice but to leave his daughter here in this park surrounded by five strange men because one of them was pointing a gun in his face. what allegedly happened next is unsettling but some say had it unfolded in other parts of the city would have been handled differently. >> the one put a gun in face, telling me to run, and all of them had their way with her. >> reporter: he's talking about these five men who he tells me one by one then raped his 18- year-old daughter. this surveillance video was taken inside a bodega not far from where the alleged attack unfolded, was captured before the alleged rape thursday night just after nine. i spoke with the victim and her dad. we're not using their names or

do you hope this video gets these guys? >> absolutely. >> reporter: police stopped people near osbourne park hoping they recognize the suspects. the father tells me he was with his daughter near the handball court having a drink when these men approached. one pulled out a gun and told him to run. he felt he had no choice. >> if i would have stood there and fought. >> reporter: you thought you would have died? >> yeah. >> reporter: he says he didn't have a cell phone, ran not far to this bodega, begging for help. they wouldn't call police. the victim tells me she did scream for help, but no one stopped. >> when your dad left you, what were you thinking? >> i was just scared. i didn't know what to do. i was in a panic mode. >> reporter: her father ran into two uniformed officer, ran back to the playground and by then about 15 minutes had passed and the suspects were gone.

>> reporter: eric adams sharply criticized police for what he says was an unacceptable delay in getting vital information out to this community. >> if a rape takes place on the upper east side, it would not take two days before that information to come out and the people to be protected and the people to be aware. >> reporter: and to that note, sources tell eyewitness news in the hours and days following this alleged rape, detectives did interview the victim at length, they canvassed this neighborhood looking for possible suspects and when they found that surveillance video, they immediately released it. tonight, the mate -- mayor vows to find and swiftly prosecute these suspects. live in brownsville, kemberly richardson channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. now, the weather. we are in for a roller coaster ride, first intense rain and flooding. parts of our area got swamped today, like this park in hackensack. long island got hit as well.

logged east drive in suffolk county, and on staten island, the rain came down fast and furious. soaking parts of south beach. tonight, get ready for a dramatic temperature drop. let's check in with meteorologist jeff smith with the exclusive accuweather forecast. jeff. >> and joe, in between all of that, we had record warm in the area. 64 was the high in newark. a lot of water fell in a short period of time this morning, centered around daybreak between 1 and 2 inches of rain, closer to the 2-inch mark in and around new york city, and that caused a lot of approximate. check out -- a lot of problems. upper wards of 60 miles per hour at mcarthur airport in islip. and a report from cap tree state park in suffolk county, a 71 miles per hour thunderstorm wind gust as storms moved through there earlier this afternoon, and hail over northwest parts of new jersey

. watch a man literally giving his shirt off his back. this cell phone video has been viewed online millions of times by people around the world. the mystery man gave a shivering man his shirt and his hat on a brooklyn bound a train in manhattan friday night. the generous man was left, as you saw there in just a tank top undershirt. >> way to go new yorkers. wow. very nice. >> the kindness of strangers. >> well, he would have been okay in that undershirt for a brief period today, certainly not tonight though. >> not tonight.

starting to tumble and it's going to be down to 40 by midnight, 32 by the time the sun comes up tomorrow morning. we head out right now and it's windy. the winds could gust at times up to 40 miles per hour. still coming in at 8 miles per hour, but that will increase as the secondary front moves on by, behind that, that's where the cold air mass comes in, too. 56 now. that's off of a high of 59 earlier this afternoon. that was just short, just shy of the record set way back in 1876 of 60 degrees. still way above normal nonetheless. winds can gust to 40 miles per hour through most of tonight. a lot of sun tomorrow. it will look nice. won't feel nice. windy and cold. 30s will feel like 20 degrees out there. a couple of snow showers possible tuesday afternoon and evening, ahead of an arctic front and behind that front, the coldest day of the week will be on wednesday. 54 in morristown. 51 bridgeport. lower and middle 50s onto island.

showers in suffolk county. extending to the jersey shore, and a few sprinkle over western and central parts of new jersey. those will move through the city in the next hour. and we'll have clearing skies, but this batch here containing a little bit of lightning earlier not too far from babylon. that has since weakened. here's our future cast overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. i want to draw your attention to temperatures, 40s by midnight in the city were down below freezing in monticello. tomorrow, 32 at 7:00 in the morning. 20s north and west. what that means is if there's any standing water from the rain we got today, that will freeze overnight, and could be slick so spots tomorrow morning. during the day, the temperature going nowhere, in the lower 30s, tuesday, clouds increase and by 4:00 p.m., you notice snow showers approaching from the west, over northern parts of new jersey, the poke nose and the cat skills and these are the areas where the temperatures below freezing where the snow could coat the ground. as these snow showers move into

air, not so much on the ground, because temperatures will be near 40. here's the windchill tomorrow. staying in the low 20s all day as that wind can gust up to 30 miles per hour at times, and then, again, a reinforcing shot of cold air coming into the picture by the middle part of the week. here's your accuweather forecast for tonight. turning out clear and colder, to 31. tomorrow, 36. that might be pushing it. it might stay in the low 30s. clear tomorrow night, down to 2. here's your accuweather 7- day forecast. clouds increasing on tuesday. there will be a few snow showers, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. the high getting up to 42. there could be a coating well north and west of the city in the highest elevations. much colder and windy on wednesday, only 31 for a high. it will feel like it's in the teens and low 20s. 34 on thursday. back into the upper 30s on friday. and our next shot at something, could be in the form of snow, would be later next weekend.
