how many people won until sometime after midnight tonight. live tonight in times square, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> good luck on that $2 bet. as he said, too soon to tell if anybody won. as soon as we get word we'll let you know on air and online. a deadly tragedy tonight killing three american aid workers and hitting close to home for columbia university. the victims, two of them were students, were killed when the bus they were riding in veered in to a ravine. all 30 passengers onboard in honduras helping the poor, members of colombia's medical aid. >> classes resume next week. when that happens , sadly two undergraduate students will not be returning here to campus after this sudden and tragic bus crash at the end of the trip where they did so much good.

trip to help those in need. 30 members of the columbia community, mostly students, bringing medical care to rural honduras. they finished their work, on a bus back to the airport for a trip home when that bus lost control and hurdled down a ravine. when it was over, columbia senior and sophomore lost their lives. a third person described as a 35-year-old healthcare professional also died. eight others were listed in critical condition including a college sophomore from scarsdale. columbia medical brigade is a chapter of a nonprofit called global brigades which works with chapters on college campuses across the u.s. and europe. late tonight the university released a statement saying three fatalities have been reported and the families notified. we're in the process of determining the full extent of injuries sustained by the bus passengers and contacting families of our students. columbia medical support and

honduras overnight to provide additional onsite assistance. our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this tragic loss. >> this affected students from both columbia college and barnard college, a part of columbia university. the president of barnard tonight identifying the third fatality as abigail flanagan. she was a nurse practitioner at columbia presbyterian who was along for this medical journey to honduras. students who can are already returning to new york. there are as many as eight still being treated with critical injuries. in the meantime authorities in honduras are blaming mechanical failure for this crash. we're live on the columbia campus in morningside heights, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. a developing story. didn't take the new york football giants very long to decide on a new head coach. the team tonight naming somebody already on staff as the 17th head coach of the storied football team. so who is it?

>> the real big winner tonight, tom coughlin left the giants last night. big blue interviewed replacement candidates. they decided their next head coach is already in the building. sources saying ben mcadoo, coughlin's offensive coordinator the last two years now set to be the giants' next head coach. he ran the offense for two years. eli manning had two good years at least statistically. mcadoo is said to have been impressive when he interviewed for the philadelphia eagles job. the giants look to keep him from going anywhere else too. nothing official yet from the giants. word is expected soon. and mack do -- and mcadoo's introduction should come after that. just a couple years ago an assisting coach in green bay. now ready to take over the top job with the new york football giants. new video just in to our news room of the mugging of a 67-year-old man in the bronx. cops searching for three suspects. you see them grab the victim, drag him, then throw him to the ground and steal money

wednesday night in the williamsbridge section. cops now releasing the video. he was not badly hurt. new at 11:00, an arrest in the rape of a 10-year-old girl in brooklyn following a three-month search. police have been searching for edwin caizaguano. they say he raped a little girl in a home in bushwick. members of the fugitive apprehension team tracked down the suspect on monday in st. paul, minnesota. he's now waiting extradition. a night in court for the fifth suspect in the alleged gang rain at a park in brooklyn. 17-year-old travis beckford now formally charged with rape, forcibly compulgz -- compulsion and sex abuse. he's accused of raipg -- in raping her. were gangs involve in a

new york cops trying to piece all that together. near the thomas jefferson educational campus, an 18-year-old former student was killed. a source says he's a known gang member. a 17-year-old current student was shot in the arm. he's in stable condition. three people now in custody. the fbi now treating the ambush shooting of a philadelphia police officer as a terror attack. officer jesse hartnett survived getting shot three times as he sat last week in his patrol car. investigators say the confessed shooter, edward archer, told them he was acting in the name of islam and had pledged allegiance to isis. now charged with attempted murder. stocks here in the u.s. took a deep plunge today. stocks took a nose dive over fears over a global slowdown and alarm over falling oil prices. s&p dropped 10% from its november peak and a plunge so big it's known as a correction on wall street. the dow sank today 364 points to 16,151.

nasdaq lost 159 points. and the s&p dropped 48. happening tomorrow, the republican presidential candidates will meet for their second to last debate before primary season kicks off. fox business network is basing the lineup for the primetime and earlier debates in south carolina on the results of recent polling. this debate comes as frontrunner donald trump faces rising challenges from ted cruz particularly in iowa. we'll be waking up to a very cold morning unless you stay up all night but it's still going to be cold, right, lee? >> yeah, and will it be snowy? that's the question . still cold out there right now. temperature is 23. the wind has backed off but it still feels like 17 degrees. there's the snow we're tracking through pennsylvania. we'll let you know if it impacts your morning commute. accuweather is coming up. also ahead on this wednesday night, a major break in the gruesome murder of an american woman living in italy.

she was using an atm. when she returned the car had been stolen. after a brief search police found the car abandoned in a nearby parking lot with the girl safely inside. new at 11:00, a major break tonight in the murder of an american woman in italy. a suspect is now in custody. police say an immigrant is being questioned in the strangulation death of 35-year-old ashley olson. her naked body was discovered saturday in her apartment in florence. an autopsy shows she was strangled with a cord or rope. dna evidence was found at the scene. back here in this country, the man who admits killing three people at a planned parenthood clinic in colorado says the shooting was, quote, my last stand. speaking in a phone call from jail, robert dear said he believes the fbi had been harassing him for years and was going to get him. he said he picked the clinic because it's,

could have sun in the afternoon. there's also the possibility of a couple of flurries later on sunday so that means the bulk of the weekend is going to be dry. our numbers are generally in the 20s with clouds coming in and also more of a southwest and westerly wind. i don't think we're going to drop very much through the night. our wind chills will still stay in the teens and cold tomorrow morning. we start out with clouds tomorrow morning, even a couple flurries. clouds break for sunshine during the day. mid and upper 30s. wind is only 6 to 12. not as harsh. clouds are already thickening here. this is an impressive little area of snow showers here that's going to be racing eastward. the air is very dry. can't rule out a snow shower. look at what the futurecast is showing. really between 4:00 and 8:00 in the morning. this is the depiction at 6 a.m. couple flurries and snow showers and maybe to the north there are a couple slick spots. that would be worst case scenario. watch

morning. bill evans will be covering that. we're 25 to start tomorrow. flurry or snow shower. maybe slick spot north and west. up to 38 in the afternoon. clouds will break for sun and it's certainly not as cold. then tomorrow night we stay above freezing, 34 degrees. 7-day accuweather forecast. 38 tomorrow. 47 on friday. clouds roll in and then we look to saturday right now, and i think the rain for the most part will be early. look how quickly the system rolling. actually clouds start to break. we go in to sunday and it's chilly. might be a late flurry then we look to monday. this is the time period where we're worried about a storm that i think is over the ocean. more evidence of that this evening. a light accumulation of snow definitely possible as we go in to the morning hours monday. it's a holiday and maybe lighter commute. one thing about that, it's much colder early next week. we're in the 30s. a couple of those days they may need to drop in to the upper 20s for highs. cold again next week. watch out for a couple slick spots tomorrow morning.

search has ended with ben mcadoo. they promote their own offensive coordinator to be their next head coach. an announcement expected soon. he's been with the giants for two years. eli manning has had two pretty big years on the field before joining tom coughlin's staff. mcadoo was with the packers. interviewed for the eagle job. said to have impressed in philly. looks like the giants get their man and keep him from a division rival. we're still awaiting official word from the giants but tonight it does appear ben mcadoo will take the reins from tom coughlin. carmelo anthony's ankle sprain kept him out in brooklyn. the nets hadn't won a home game in over a month. 10 straight losses in brooklyn. no anthony for the knicks. brook and robin lopez, twin brothers. mom! the nets were out in fronts. the knicks answer.
