i'm bill ritter. >> and i'm sade baderinwa. the robber shot as many as four times after he pointed his gun at the guards. >> all this happened at a chase bank in franklin square. josh einiger at the scene with the developing story. >> this thing happened so quickly the bad guy barely got in to the second door of this bank branch when he pulled that gun, cops say, and was promptly shot by the security guard. >> reporter: it was rush hour on this busy stretch of franklin avenue. people running home from work, running errands, getting cash, when a man walked in to this chase branch and pulled a gun. >> entered the bank, announced the robbery and pointed a black handgun at two security guards that were located inside the bank. >> reporter: but he may not have expected those guards to be armed as well. one of them a retired police officer pulled his own weapon and opened fire, hitting the would-be robber several times as innocent bystanders hit the floor. tonight crime scene

for clues while outside they ran every license plate to try to figure out how the suspect got here. he's now in the hospital where he needed surgery for his injuries. the police say he will survive. >> back live, this bank branch closed. it is still a crime scene as investigators continue to figure out exactly what took place here. they say this bank branch actually has been hit some number of times in the past. it's not clear exactly when and how many times. but police want to know if the suspect who was shot tonight might possibly have been responsible for past robberies here. we're live in franklin square, long island, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. happening now, con ed crews are working to restore natural gas service to a building in manhattan after a gas leak triggered evacuations. about

the utility says service should be restored by tomorrow morning. what happened in that park? that question baff ling police tonight as four of the five suspects in that alleged gang rain in brooklyn are released from custody. the da's office admitting it will not meet its friday deadline to secure indictments against the teens. an attorney for one of the boys says it's a step in the right direction in a case that is only proved to confuse investigators. >> i see an incredible amount of doubt, an incredible amount of reason for the district attorney's office to really look at this. >> the da's office will use the next 180 days as allowed by law to build their case. that will include dna evidence. the fifth suspect is being held on a prior charge. an elementary school suddenly finds itself with an outbreak of norovirus. ps12 in woodside. it's happened over the last two days. the school will be open tomorrow. it's not

also tomorrow the funeral for one of the young columbia university students killed in a bus crash in central america. 21-year-old daniella, a junior at barnhart, one of 30 volunteers working with the medical brigades program. she and two others were killed when their bus crashed when they were headed to the airport to come back home. now to an eyewitness news exclusive. another slashing. a right hand -- -a random attack on a bronx street. a man is viciously slashed across his face three times, now forever bearing the scars of someone else's madness. n.j. burkett posting this powerful image of the victim on facebook tonight. he talked with the victim in east tremont. >> he needs to explain himself and turn himself in because he can do this to somebody else. >> reporter: jose martin has more than 100 stitches in his face. attacked on east tremont avenue, just two blocks from his apartment. but he had no idea

rushed in to the bathroom to wash off the blood and saw a horrifying image in the mirror. >> there was blood all over the place, on my coat, on my shirt. i didn't know i was slashed until i saw the deep cuts across my face. >> reporter: these pictures were taken after the attack in jose's room at st. barnabus hospital where he lay for hours, replaying it in his mind. he was walking home from a neighborhood restaurant when a man walked toward him. >> once i passed him it happened really fast. i was pushed, i asked him what's going on then he hit me across the face and i fell down. when i got up he hit me again and i fell down again. >> reporter: jose is a brick layer and his daughter depends on the money that he sends home to his family in honduras. he says he never saw a knife and says the attack was entirely unprovoked. >> i have no idea. i didn't

york city's carriage horses and the livelihood of their owners and drivers could be decided soon according to published reports. the associated press's reporting from an unnamed source that the number of horses would be substantially reduced and that they would be given a permanent home somewhere in central park. >> it's illegal to give away public park land and then on top of that they want the public to pay for this facility. >> reporter: a joint statement by the de blasio administration, and teamsters joint council 216 who represent the carriage drivers to witness news says we continue to have productive discussions to reach an equitable outcome for all parties involved. we've not yet reached an agreement. >> having them work in a park that's not car-free, that's not free of pedestrians or cyclists is not going to change the fact that they're still being put in danger.

breaking news tonight. three arrests in the deadly terror attack in starbucks in indonesia. the men with suspected terrorist ties. two inisn't people were killed -- two innocent people were killed. a mass gunman opening fire in the hall of an apartment building in brooklyn. surveillance video shows the suspect entering the lobby yesterday and unloading four rounds at a group of men who were in the hallway. there were no reported injuries. the suspect is on the loose right now. new at 11:00, powerball fever tonight and not exactly in a good way. reports of a nurse winning a share of the big prize now appear to be a hoax. the

center in southern california right near the convenience store where one of the winning tickets was sold. she apparently told coworkers she had won after getting a text message. turned out it was just her son pulling a prank. residents of a building in the bronx are fuming mad. they've had to live without gas for the past 18 months. people who live at 2200 aqueduct avenue in university heights rallied tonight to demand their landlord fix the problem. they say most residents can't use their stoves and have no heat. some gas lines were turned on in october but many apartments were still out in the cold. >> we have children who are sleeping with their hoodies, scarves, sweaters, sweats, so they can stay warm over the winter. >> i bought some electronic decan de -- devices that help me but [ inaudible ] or sometimes we go to restaurants. >> we reached out to their landlord for comment but have not heard back. we'll be sure

a new safety feature showing up on school buses, available on most cars today. a feature that detects anyone within 10 feet, anyone like young students. eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer talking to a father whose daughter was killed by a school bus and wants sensors on buses. >> reporter: there sits a potential life saver. with this detection center, bob o'sullivan knows when he pulls up to wicroft elementary school he knows when and where students are around his bus. >> it tells us to stop, pause, and look. >> reporter: eyewitness news got an exclusive look at the sds, a series of these sensors placed strategically around the bus, detecting any movement within 10 feet. mike is with the controls that manufacturers the sensors. >> this is the critical site because this is where the children are getting on and off.

the backside here to pick up obstacles. this is probably the most critical area right here. this is a microwave-based technology. works in snow, sleet, inclement weather. >> reporter: the system is being closely followed as new jersey lawmakers consider abigail's law that would require all new buses to be equipped with censors. the proposed law is named after 18 month abigail who was killed by a bus in 2003. her father supports the legislation. >> no reason why buses shouldn't be equipped with the same type of alarms and cautionary devices to prevent a tragedy that i've endured. >> reporter: like the addition of the rounded cross over mirrors and the swing arms, these sensors could add an important new level of safety. tim fleischer, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> there will be a day i think when we'll look at that and say this happen? turning

pretty mild out there right now. >> temperatures have stabilized. not as cold. almost feels nice r now than it did in the middle of the day. good as we head in the weekend in terms of temperatures. we have rain that will be arriving around this time tomorrow night. george washington bridge wide open under a cloudy sky and temperatures at 37 degrees. cloudy sky and west wind around 8 miles per hour right now. if we could go to an outside shot, want to change my show play. i want to go to a different show. right now our temperatures are working through the 40s. i think we're going to be in good shape to see temperatures close in on the 50-degree mark tomorrow during the afternoon hours especially if we can get the sunshine to stay out during the afternoon hours. our winds are going to be light out of the southeast. the high today, 38 degrees, which is actually right on target. weather headlines look like this. temperatures don't drop much tonight and we could see a little black ice off to the north and west. that soaking rain is tomorrow night

a snowy finish to the weekend with light accumulation amounts. 37 in the park. 36, belmar. still a touch below freezing off to the north and west. right now mainly cloudy skies. clouds will be increasing tomorrow. lots of high clouds. and those clouds will thicken but will get in to the upper 40s during the day. patchy clouds tend to be thinning out toward the west. we're concerned about this storm fair amount of rain with it. you know what, typically this would be a snow track in the middle of january. but because of our last couple of months being very warm, our ocean temperatures are super high. we're running in the upper 40s and lower 50s. and that's why we're looking at a rainstorm. speaking of the warm water temperatures, that's fueling a january hurricane, 1938. this one is named alex, winds at 80 miles per hour. off to greenland as a powerful low. pretty remarkable. back to our

but a lot of sunshine early and then clouds will be rolling in. highs around 50. around this time tomorrow night rain starts heavy rain you could also see there's a lot more rain at the coast and a little less inland. we could push an inch of rain south and east. little concerned about icing north and that's late morning. this is leaving the scene early on saturday so i like the idea of drying out still snow showers north and west. if we see that sun, these temperatures are done. i could see temperatures getting around 50 a light wind tomorrow morning. 49 tomorrow. filtered sun. and a cloudy finish and it's mild. 40 tomorrow night. rain late in the evening gets heavy. heavier rain gear for late tomorrow night. on your 7-day forecast, morning rain getting the sun on saturday. then on sunday it's a lot cooler. this storm is going to go out to sea but this one to the west is going to be closed

an arrest tonight in a man who burgled a home of neil patrick harris. happened yesterday morning. harris' quick thinking butler took a walk and found the suspect trying to sell the bench. darian humphries charged with possession of stolen property. in tonight's health alert, a potentially life saving agreement. cvs pharmacies across new york state will start selling the heroin antidote. new york state health officials announcing 479 cvs pharmacies will sell naloxone, commonly known by the brand name narcan without a prescription. naloxone has been used by ambulance crews and emergency rooms for decades. new jersey's largest university how banning hover boards on campus over concerns they might catch fire. rutgers university sent an e-mail to students and faculty.

, mcadoo said i've been preparing for this moment my entire professional life and without the guidance and support of many people i would not be here right now. eli manning threw his support behind mcadoo. we have the official introductions tomorrow. what about coughlin? half of philadelphia thought he was going to be named eagles head coach. coughlin told the eagles to take him out of the running. he no longer wanted to be considered. giants fans don't have to worry about that awkward reunion. coughlin is not going either. he did interview there but the 9ers hired chip kelly today. the eagles are said to be going with doug peterson, the bucks with dirk cutter. as for the jets, no coaching change. just getting ready for next season. gm mike jets address today. other than that, now that he's had time to this year. >> we're disappointed we didn't make the playoffs.

to the season we felt our goal was build a team that could be competitive on a yearly basis for the playoffs and i think we've made progress in that area. it's definitely a work in progress though and we're not there yet. right now we get to the games. the rangers, islanders, not only a rivalry game but important in the standings as well. they came in tied with 51 points. henrik lundqvist ended up with 21 saves for the rangers. halak, 44 saves for the islanders. no scoring till the final minute of the 2nd period. mark stahl started. 3rd period, nelson for the tie. just over two minutes later, look how pretty this goal is. nick ledi with the eventually goal winner. beat them 3-1. they get a win over their rival. the devils are out west against colorado.
