and talk about politics making strange bedfellow. several politicking stepping up. >> hillary clinton tweeting her approval of how trump handled cruz's comment last night. and now we're hearing from cruz himself. >> reporter: bill as you know if you look another the national polling it shows donald trump has a significant lead on the rest of the pack. when you look at where the voting process begins in the next few weeks. ted cruz is actually three points ahead of donald trump there in the state of iowa. so so no surprise that the two quarrels in south carolina. but reports saying that ted cruz went too far and that he insulted all of us. trump himself once said new york values are different than america. >> he said look i'm from new york. that's what we believe in new york. those aren't iowa values but

>> reporter: but trump shot back by invoking 9/11. >> everybody in the world love new york and love new yorkers and i have to tell you, that was a very insulting statement that ted made. >> reporter: and trump went on how new york recovers from 9/11, he spoke of grit and determination. and in the end he even had ted cruz applauding. >> when the twin towers went down, i saw something on that no one else on earth could have york. >> [ applause ] >> reporter: a day later at city hall the mayor demanded an apology. >> i just want to say on behalf of all new yorkers, i'm disgusted at the insult that ted cruz threw at this city and its people.

they have no place in new york because that's not who new yorkers are. i apologize to all the small businesses who have been driven out of new york city by crushing taxes and regulations. i apologize to all of the african american children who mayor deblasio, tried to throw out of their charter schools who were providing a lifeline. and i apologize to all the cops and first responders who had no choice but mayor deblasio because mayor deblasio and on and stands with the criminals and looters rather than the brave men and women in blue. >> reporter: that was the apology issued by senator ted cruz of texas to new york and several new york politicians.

couple of weeks, ted cruz has avoided engaging with donald trump but that all changed last night and today many analysts today saying the reason for that is because the two are getting close in the first couple of states that will be having the voting and it all starts in a couple of weeks. >> oh he's engaging with him now. another costly sell off in wall street bringing the end of the worse two week start in the year. at one point the starting day, the dow plunged to 130 points. investors were rattled by another drop in oil prices and that caused energy stocks to tumble. by the close the dow regained a bit of ground but still lost 113 points. the nasdaq tumbled 126 points and the s & p lost 41.

for a former suffolk county police sergeant charged with pulling over and stealing their money. green cleared of most counts including hate crimes. >> reporter: a thief with a badge, bill those are the words from the su fulling county district attorneys after the officer -- from the suffolk county district attorneys after the officer was cleared. sergeant scott green was charged with targeting hispanics for traffic stops.

into his sleeve after stopping a under cover officer. the sergeant was cleared of bias charges. latino activists tonight are furious. >> it just boggles my mind. they were all hispanics. and you know, and the jury still couldn't come to that conclusion that it was a hate crime. >> reporter: supporters of the victims insist that sergeant green targeted undocumented hispanics because they are often paid in cash. and would be unlikely to report the theft. critics of the verdict say the jury simply didn't understand the law. >> everybody that came forward was hispanic and all of them fit the same profile. the methodology was the same. he would either ask them for

wallet in the car and take their money. statute requires, the sergeants attorney insists there was no proof of that. >> we beat the top charges. we knew it was not a hate crime. we knew it was overcharged. to be clear, the jury did charges. sergeant green was taken into custody this afternoon. he faces a minimum of 16 months in prison. and a second trial on similar charges involving many other latino motorists. mourners filled a synagogue in the east side.

library. police were called and a warner library system. >> someone had a picture of him and said is this him, i said yes. we proceeded from there and libraries. >> reporter: the man is photographed in the distinctive nike sweatshirt. >> the school sent an e-mail to families just to let them know it had happened. but i don't think i felt terribly concerned because i felt that people and the kids were not here at the time it occurred. >> reporter: cold spring is a quiet quaint village. known more for antiquing than crime. police played a role in the arrest. >> many people think cold spring is mayberry and it's not.

assistant high school coach. today ben mcadoo is the head coach of the new york giants. mcadoo's job has just begun. the picture came into focus this morning, mcadoo taking the job. >> i'm a hardened, battle tests tests -- battle tested and have been groomed for this job. >> reporter: he says he knows this is about winning not just competing. so the work starts now on a team that expects better than three straight losing seasons. >> you know every night i take pride in being able to look in the mirror. and know that i did my best to get the job done. >> guys can be great coordinators. doesn't necessarily mean they're going to be great head coaches, but i think he has something in him that is going to low him to be a terrific nfl coach. >> reporter: mcadoo worked with
