feels like zero in monticello. 46 miles per hour in newburg earlier in the day. that is harsh. the wind gusts are still over 30 miles per hour in many locations. i don't expect them to subside very much. radar and satellite, a couple showers upstate. overnight a couple could flare up and move in northern new jersey, new york city, long island, connecticut, probably not southern new jersey. you can see on the futurecast how a few of those roll through. it's so cold even a brief snow shower could stick in icy spots. most areas will stay partly cloudy. tomorrow morning, bitterly cold chills. tomorrow morning, 5 below to about 5 above and only recovering to 10 to 15 during the day. here's what you need to know. extreme cold. that will last through tomorrow night then things will moderate middle of the week. couple snow showers can cause icy roads. we have to watch out for one light snowfall midweek. then i'm sure

it's a week of snowticipation. we'll have the latest on the status of the storm in accuweather in just a few minutes. now we go to meteorologist jeff smith who spoke to people in hoboken who are a little split over their feelings about the arctic chill. some like it. some don't. >> everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion but i'm looking at my accutrack weather alert app which went from 25 degrees. the wind gusting. in this hum ble meteorologist's opinion, it's cold. >> for the third week in a row, monday greeted us with an arctic blast. i don't like >> you're bundled up though. >> we just bought these gloves. prepared. >> reporter: temperature s toiled in the 20s all day despite the bright sunshine and the wind didn't exactly help, teens. >> reporter: we've

[ laughter ] to keep track of the snow, the ice, the cold temperatures when we're not on the air, download our free accutrack weather alert app. one lane is reopened on the southbound parks river freeway in yonkers after a 14-car pileup last night. they all collided near the bridge. fortunately all the injuries are considered minor. right now only the left southbound lane is closed from palmer road to the spring book parkway where crews are making repairs to a guard rail. tonight police are on the hunt for two suspects in the robbery of an off duty cop. we've obtained video of them making a run for it. he managed to hit a third suspect who was now in custody. this all went down in the tremont section. kemberly richardson is there. >> a maze of crime scene tape still crisscrosses the intersection at the bottom of this hill. that's where early

a sergeant, was heading home from work, when three men surrounded him and at one point yelled, shoot him. >> i heard about four or five shots. i heard gunshots. i could hear somebody going, call the police. please, i'm a police officer. call the police. >> reporter: and they did respond, a small army of nypd officers from every direction. there's a sense of urgency in this exclusive video obtained by eyewitness news. one of their own, an off duty sergeant, had just been held up by three men at gunpoint. here at the corner street. >> i heard the shooting. i saw it. >> reporter: it was right around 4:00 this morning. officials say the 32-year-old officer had just gotten off work, was heading home. the three suspects surrounded him, pulled out these knives recovered at the scene and took the officer's cell phone. then authorities maintained one spotted the officer's shield, pulled out a gun, and in spanish yelled shoot him, shoot him.

out his weapon and open fire. >> when i looked out the window, i could see his face clear as day. he was backing up. he had his weapon drawn and everything. he had the guy down on the floor. >> reporter: one of the suspects, he managed to shoot him in the torso. he collapsed here. two others took off on foot down creston avenue. here in this exclusive video on the top of your screen you see what appears to be a match, the pair rounded the corner and headed up east tremont. >> i thought it was some other people, somebody that was shooting, just a regular shooting. someone shooting at somebody. >> reporter: in the minutes after, police tried to find the two suspects, checking stores in the area, but the pair slipped away. >> it was scary because i didn't want to be his neighbor that knows him to look out her window and see actually something happened to him, i don't think i would be able to live with that. >> luckily that officer is okay. he was taken to the hospital just to be checked out.

was hit with the bullet in the torso, he's 18 years old. he's in the hospital tonight. he's expected to survive. the two that took off on foot on east tremont, one was last seen wearing a red jacket. the other one had on a black coat. for now we're live in the tremont section of the bronx, kemberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness news. a social worker slashed in the face by a stranger in the east village is recovering and talking about what happened. 30-year-old anthony christopher-smith from newark said he was walking along east 6th street near cooper square saturday afternoon when he was attacked out of the blue. the victim spoke today to eyewitness news today by phone from his hospital bed. >> i was walking up the street. i was head ing to meet a friend for lunch and somebody randomly came up and slashed me in the face and back. i had never seen this person before. i have no idea who they are. i have no idea what their motivation was. they just came up and attacked me. i couldn't call 911 because i bled so much, i bled all over my phone and couldn't press the buttons.

it took eight hours of surgery, 150 stitches and a nerve graft to put the right part of his face back together. he has partial paralysis but doctors expect a full recovery. meanwhile police are continuing to look for that suspect. police say a college student in upstate new york killed two people then himself because he was distraught over a recent breakup. 24-year-old colin kingston entered the home of his ex-girlfriend, 21-year-old kelsey annise. he found her and another student, matthew hutchison, and stabbed them both to death. it was then kingston called his father. >> the call was made to mr. kingston and then when the phone call was terminated by colin, shortly thereafter colin kingston took his own life.

genesio. those in the prisoner swap are being treated tonight. family. elizabeth hur has more. >> reporter: five americans are free at last. >> we're overjoyed he's out. >> reporter: a boston university graduate student is the first to arrive home, arriving in massachusetts after iran. meanwhile, three of the ex-prisoners are now getting much needed medical treatment at a u.s. military base in germany. their first stop out of iran was geneva, switzerland where washington post reporter met the u.s. official who helped he was held for more than a year and a half on charges of espionage. >> he's doing okay. he's mostly been time. >> reporter: former marine seen here with his family and congressman spent more than four years at the notorious prison. his sister beamed with joy at

>> we're looking forward to meeting him hopefully soon. we're very excited. >> reporter: and pastor syed's family grateful. >> i said daddy was released from prison. you'll see him soon. >> reporter: the fifth american chose to stay in iran, this as we learn more details about their release. abc news confirming in exchange the obama administration agreed to release seven iranians charged with violating u.s. sanctions and to drop arrest warrants for 14 others. this on top of paying $1.7 billion to settle an old financial dispute with the iranian government. these americans were released just after that nuclear deal with iran went in to effect. the white house maintains the two deals are separate, adding diplomatic efforts over the nuclear deal actually paved the way for this release to happen. elizabeth hur, abc news new york. around the area and across

remembering in honor dr. martin luther king, jr. the brooklyn academy of music hosted a large celebration and rally. community and political leaders attended including mayor de blasio and first lady chirlane mccray. they put together care packages for needy families. they also made cards and painted murals. in washington, d.c. we've got the obamas who planted vegetable seeds and other things at a district of columbia elementary school. we can see michelle obama there and the president. they worked alongside americore and other volunteers. a victoria's secret supermodel busted for drunk driving in connecticut. and a car crashes in to a home in long island. this is not the first time at this intersection. what is causing so many accidents here.

all new at 5:00, a business owner busted for hoarding birds. rescue volunteers spent the day removing more than 200 rare and exotic birds from a clothing store in passaic. eyewitness news reporter aj ross is there with more on what's going to happen to the birds now. >> this storefront in passaic was housing much more than meets the eye.

officers discovered hundreds of exotic birds in dirty cages that are now receiving some much needed tlc. >> reporter: concealed in a small space tucked in the back of the second hand clothing store, their songs of call seemingly fell on deaf ears until the spca recently received a tip that led to an amazing discovery. >> what we have here is a hoarding case that's turned in to a rescue. >> reporter: crammed in to dozens of dirty cages in the back of this market street store, officers and rescue volunteers recovered 218 exotic birds, ranging from conyers to cockatiels and cockatoos. >> we have some injured so they're going to need a little tlc. we're going to rehome the cockatiels and some of the conyers. we have eight conyers, an umbrella cockatoo and i'm not sure the number of cockatiels. somewhere around 60 i believe. >> reporter: the birds are now

at a variety of sanctuaries, both inside and outside of the state, until they can find forever homes. >> for us this is a first, just taking large quantities. they just need some larger flights and better food and definitely need some showers. >> after interviewing the bird's owner, officers say they do not believe this is a case of animal cruelty or neglect so no charges are being filed. i'm told at this hour there are 45 doves still inside the store that need to be removed. live tonight in passaic, aj ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. a tentative deal to reduce the number of horse drawn carriages in central park now faces final approval from the city council. under the terms of the deal reached by mayor de blasio and the union, the number of carriages would be reduced from 180 to 95. the rides would be confined to central park where a stable will be built in

>> horses will get off the streets of our city. in terms of the routes they go on in the course of this year, 2016, they'll go in to central park. ultimately the stables will be moved and there will be no more streets. everything will be contained in central park. >> the proposed deal falls short of mayor de blasio's pledge to ban horse drawn rides. jason pierre paul had another surgery today on his hand that was severely injured in a fireworks accident. the giants star posted the announcement on his instagram this morning. pierre-paul has already had multiple surgeries on his right hand since he was injured on july 4th. he waited to have this surgery so he could get back on the field with the giants earlier this season. the national guard has doubled its presence in flint, michigan to help with the city's drinking water crisis. that brings the number of guard

getting reinforced tonight, the high shy of freezing, only the third time below average. last year in the state it was soaking rain. high of 42. we got our first measurable snow in new york city last night. about .4 of an inch of snow. not much left of that. certainly cold air left behind, 23 chelsea and 25 in jamaica, queens. long island in the mid 20s. wind chills, it's 9. feels-like reading at jfk, probably airport delays because of the gusty winds that have been gusting at 40 at times. single digits near zero. they'll keep up all night long. if you look, the core of the coldest air isn't even here yet. it's over the great lakes. that has to sweep through tonight and tomorrow. look at the wind chills with this, 10 to 20 below over the western great lakess. this will come through during the day tomorrow. then things will start to recover. allow for the snow shower during the first part of the night.

tomorrow. wind gusts 30 to 40 miles per hour. temperatures will once again come up short of the 30-degree mark. there are a couple snow showers coming down, lake erie. a few of these have enough momentum to make it to the area overnight. we'll watch it closely on radar. storms we're watching as the week rolls on, i know you were all talking about the late weekend storm but this low over nevada will go over the southern tier of the u.s. we have to watch it for wednesday for possible light snows. the storm possibility late in the week, something to consider the main key piece for this is still out over the pacific. when it gets on land, our computer modeling had better sampling and will get an idea and more confirmation on this potential storm track later in the week. right now confidence definitely growing in a big storm. notice the futurecast overnight as we go back to the short-term. scattered snow showers. over annoying we'll be -- overnight we'll be in the teens to 20s. wind chills probably zero.

probably be around 10 to 15. extremely cold with wind chills near 5 in new york city. zero-degree wind chills in the suburbs. up to 29 tomorrow with bitter gusts, real biting wind. feels like 10 despite sunshine. after a gusty evening the winds will back off. here's what we're working on for 5:30. how about that close call, is it mainly south of new york city? we'll work on that. dry daylight hours on friday. how about the idea that there will iron out. we'll try to devil in to that in our next half hour. video of a sandstorm that turned the sky yellow over the sand blotted out the sun today, limiting visibility on roadways causing a whole lot of people to stay home.

we're learning the suspect in the shooting death of an ohio police officer has a lengthy criminal history. officer thomas catrel was found shot. police arrest d -- arrested herschel jones after a manhunt. his girlfriend had called dispatchers to report jones was armed looking to harm police.

the university of cincinnati has reached a $5.3 million settlement with the family of an unarmed black man shot and killed by police. the deal gives the family of samuel debose $4.5 million and provides for his children. the officer who shot him is charged with murder. the trial in france has taken a deadly turn. one of six people who were sickened after taking the experimental drug died sunday. five others are recovering. some are improving while others are showing signs of brain damage. a total of 90 volunteers took part in the trial with the drug that was intended to ease pain and anxiety. for three hours today the british parliament took up a debate on whether donald trump should be banned from their country. words used by

new details tonight after a car busts through a fence and slams in to a house. the driver took off on foot. >> it turns out this isn't the first time. several other homes have been hit by cars in that area and neighbors say they've had enough. >> eyewitness news reporter n.j. burkett tweeting pictures of three of the crashes in the last five months. he's live with what neighbors want done. >> what do they want? slow the traffic down. because this sign , this 30-mile-per-hour speed limit sign, isn't worth the metal it's printed on. if it didn't take the death of a teenage girl to change things on this road, residents wonder what will it take? street at 55 miles per hour. >> reporter: neighbors are angry and not the least bit

through this plastic fence and slammed head long in to the back of the house. amazingly no one inside was injured. and the driver left the scene on foot. police believe he lost control after speeding in to an intersection with a thin coatings of black ice. >> this is a 30-mile-per-hour and you can see them all the time, they're flying up and down here and they fly up and down because they're coming off the southern state. >> reporter: residents are furious because it's happened before. november. although nobody was injured, less than three months earlier a car loaded with teenagers crashed in to the house next door. one of the passengers, a 17 -year-old old girl didn't survive. >> we couldn't get her out of the car. it was demolished. >> reporter: after

crashes in less than five months, neighbors are demanding changes on little east neck road. a busy straightaway where the 35-mile-per-hour speed limit seems to be regarded as a practical joke. >> we've been trying to get a light here for over 20 years. you have one, two, three, and it's obvious there's something to do with the speed coming across this bridge. >> this is the bridge she's talking about. it's an overpass. some people believe the car in the fatal crash was going so fast over that overpass that it became airborne before it struck the house. police say the driver in this latest crash remains at large tonight. live tonight in west babylon, long island, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. police are trying to figure out what caused a driver to lose control of his car and end up in the gowanus canal. the man managed to get out of the vehicle on his own. he suffered only minor injuries and was

he ran over the foot of a woman who was holding a baby. the baby and the woman were not seriously hurt. a swedish doctor has been charged with rape and kidnapping after he confessed to drugging a woman with sedative-laced strawberries and locking her up in a sound-proof bunker. his defense lawyer described the case as an elaborate plot to find a girlfriend. the indictment revealed the man allegedly said he planned to years. and we're just learning of another loss for the music industry. glenn fray, one of the founders of the eagles has died. he sang lead vocals in the eagles' 1972 hit take it easy. it was the eagles' first

received this mugshot. seymour was arrested friday night after she crashed in to another vehicle on an off ramp. officers say the 47-year-old refused to take a breathalyzer at the scene but smelled of alcohol and was unsteady on her feet. legal trouble tonight for the singer who gained worldwide fame with his song "american pie." singer songwriter don mclane was arrested where he lives with his wife. he posted $10,000 bail and was released. it's that time of year again, tax season. the irs will begin accepting returns starting tomorrow. this year more than 70% of taxpayers are eligible for the irs' free file program. it gives anyone with income below $62,000 access to free tax preparation software. 70% of taxpayers are also expected to get a refund this year. a children's book pulled off store shelves.

sugar coats slavery. a traveling case of an apparent animal abuse in oklahoma. oklahoma city animal welfare got a call that a dog was running loose, this dog. they found the dog had its nose cut off and that part of its ear was missing. they call this little pup rudy. they say her nose won't grow back and her ear has been sliced. she's also malnourished. >> we don't know whether these injuries were due to an individual or what happened but we're hoping somebody out there can tell us what happened and if indeed this was a physical act of animal cruelty where somebody did this intentionally, it's somebody that should be caught. >> rudy will stay in foster care until her health improves. she seems like a good dog. >> poor little thing. the spacex rocket nails its launch but the landing doesn't go as planned. >> tonight the up close look at what went wrong as the rocket touched down. plus this. >> just like martin luther king

enrollment ends january 31st. dramatic video released, the latest attempt from spacex to launch the satellite in to orbit. the launch was a success but the attempts to land the rocket didn't go so well. the rocket tipped over, burst in to flames while attempting to land on a floating barge off california. last month as you may recall, spacex landed a reusable rocket on the ground but it's been unable to land on a barge. >> i hate when this happens. two harbor seals that washed up arrived with respiratory problems.

tonight and in to the day tomorrow, only back off later tomorrow night so it's pretty gusty for the next 24 hours or so then the winds will back off. there's futurecast showing a couple isolated snow showers, the north. we already got that picture from sullivan county. temperatures in the teens and 20s. it will stick in a hurry. a lot of very, very cold. let's deal with the 7-day accuweather 29 tomorrow. the afternoon is not nearly as harsh. see that disturbance coming in from the west? that's going to try to team up with a disturbance offshore and we might get caught on the northwestern fringe of some of the snow showers. could be light accumulation wednesday night in to the morning. maybe a slick spot there. in terms of thursday, what you're looking at showers. on thursday what i think will probably happen is that we'll have to wake up to a couple snow showers then during the day we'll be looking at this disturbance right here coming across the country. that's what
