>> it never fails. every year in the mid january to early february time period we just get locked in that weather dungeon where it gets bitterly cold like this and we have it for today and in to tomorrow. brutally cold, a wind that cuts right up. typically you see the winds die down after sunset. right now. you see the camera shaking right there. our temperature at 6:00 is at 23 degrees right now and it feels like 13. hours ago. feels like 4 below in monticello. single digit wind chills taking over the area. they're off their peak but they'll be gusting overnight. have to allow for a snow shower the first part of the night. that could mean a couple slippery spots around. numbers will drop in to the teens by morning. it will feel like about zero to 5 above. these are the wind chills tomorrow morning. 5 below to 5 above and during the afternoon hours maybe 10 to 15 so it's

extremely cold out here. we spent much of the afternoon, right now we're in up and up manhattan. but we spent much of the afternoon trying to see how people are staying warm in the fordham section of the bronx. >> reporter: this is heads down, hands buried in your chattering cold. >> we have sweats, tights, two pairs of socks, long shirt, thermals, all you can think of, we have on. >> makes a difference, right? >> yeah face warm. >> i didn't realize it was this cold out today. i said it's not going to stop me from going to the gym though. wind. angel says for those three-layer day. don't forget yes, he said that. >> i have my sister's tights on. >> that's really weird. do we have to know that? >> reporter: this is get where

the gloves and the hat, and you back to you. truck. >> we want to talk about a weather-related accident. one lane is reopened, this after icy conditions caused a 14-car pileup late last night. the vehicles all colliding under the 10 people were hurt. fortunately all the injuries not considered serious. right now only the left southbound lanes closed from palmer road and spring brook while crews make repairs to the guard rail. a search tonight for the attacker in the latest vicious random slashing. this time in manhattan. 150 stitches on his face, and tonight that victim is speaking out about the frightening attack. it happened in broad daylight over the weekend in the east village. eyewitness news reporter darla miles is at the hospital tonight in kips bay. >> friends say that it took eight hours of surgery to repair the victim's face. they

pretty much sliced off and the flesh just hanging there. it was so gruesome that the victim himself didn't want to look at it at first. >> i didn't want to see it at first. >> reporter: the before picture way too gruesome for tv. this is the after surgery photo of the 7 to 8-inch gash on anthony christopher-smith's face. >> i couldn't call 911 because i bled all over my phone. i couldn't push the buttons. >> reporter: the 30-year-old was on his way to lunch when he says a man cursed at him and slashed him across his face and his back. >> do you know if this man came up in front of you or behind you? >> i'm not 100% sure. it might have been in front. i don't fully remember because i didn't remember seeing him before he got me. >> reporter: we spoke to christopher-smith from this hospital bed at bellevue. >> i was shoved against a wall. fell to the ground. >> there

damaged in his face that they had to repair so he was in surgery for about eight hours and had to do at least one nerve graft from his ear to repair one of the nerves in his face. >> reporter: christopher-smith is a social worker who works and lives in newark and he never considered his weekend trips to the city dangerous until this. >> i want them to catch that guy. either in the mental hospital or jail or both. because i think he was deranged. he didn't steal anything. >> the nypd is still working to the only description that they're going on so far is about he's 5'3", 150 pounds, had on a black or so if you were near east 6th street near 4:30 saw anything suspicious, please call crimestoppers at reporting live in kips bay where the victim is

be released tonight, darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. two suspects remain on the run and another is being treated for a gunshot wound after police say they tried to rob an off duty nypd sergeant in the bronx. the attempted mugging happened in the tremont section early this morning. the sergeant fired once, hitting an 18-year-old suspect. detectives say that man was carrying two knives. he's expected to survive. the other two men who police say had a gun and knife ran off. the off duty sergeant was not injured. it took 18 long and controversial years before the country marked his birthday with a holiday. martin luther king, jr. day, 30 years later today, 2016, celebrated around the country and around the local events include a large celebration and valley. community and political leaders were there including mayor de blasio and his wife, chirlane mccray.

newark demanding a minimum hourly wage of $15 and union protection. also marching for a $15 minimum wage, new york governor cuomo and mayor de blasio, state's two most powerful democrats, rarely rallying together but they did today. not a march on washington but a march in harlem, perhaps a kind of tribute to dr. king. political reporter dave evans was there. >> reporter: andrew cuomo, al sharpton, bill de blasio. all together. all marching for a $15 minimum wage. they call it the civil rights issue of 2016. >> finally we're talking about income equality, the way dr. king would have us talk about it. >> reporter: inside al sharpton's annual mlk celebration, the talk this year wasn't so much about police violence or stop and frisk, it was about what they call economic justice. >> we used to hear $15 an hour was impossible. today all over this country because of an extraordinary movement, everyone is talking about $15 an hour. >> reporter: the fight actually began two years ago when fast food workers rallied and the mayor is right.

nobody thought $15 an hour was realistic but they do now because the governor has made it the centerpiece of his economic agenda. >> i am proud to fight for it. let new york lead the way and say you want economic justice? pay people with respect. >> reporter: and on this issue the mayor and governor agree they've quarrelled this past year on how to fix the homeless problem, what's the right number of charter schools, and they crossed last week on the budget but today, agreement, and a scolding of the media that the governor says is obsessed on whether he and the mayor like each other. >> yes, i think you make too much of it. i think at the end of the day we work well together and we get things done for the city, which is what it's all about. >> some republicans and business leaders have argued we can't afford $15. the fight moves to albany for discussion in the spring. for now the issue got a nice boost here on martin luther king day. in

eyewitness news. >> speaking of martin luther king day, president obama and the first lady honored his life and legacy with a day of community service today. the obamas planted vegetable seeds this afternoon at an elementary school in the nation's capitol as part of mrs. obama's initiative against childhood obesity. they stuffed bags of books for students alongside ameri core and other volunteers. we've posted dr. king's nobel peace prize acceptance speech back in 1964 that was released today. as we continue with eyewitness news at 6:00, a major subway construction project now beginning and it's going to disrupt service for more than a year. >> also ahead, animal control officers move in after finding hundreds of birds inside a store. >> and a knicks star gets hurt in an afternoon game today

those inconvenient and unpleasant changes to the train went in to effect today. mta workers were out in force hoping to ease the confusion caused by the closure of nine manhattan bound trains today. they'll remain closed until next year as they undergo a

the impacts of 50,000 commuters who ride that line every day. >> stinks for people. it's very 90. i'm able to -- it's very inconvenient. i'm able to walk but what about the people who aren't able to walk? >> the metal in the stairs is corroding. >> the manhattan-bound platforms will be out of service to be fixed for the next 14 month. -- months. it's now up to the city council to reduce the number of horse drawn carriages. under the deal reached by mayor de blasio and the union representing carriage drivers, the number of carriages would be reduced almost by half to 95. rides would be confined just to central park where a $60 million stable will be constructed by 2018. those lucky horses. plan also calls for compensating drivers who do in fact lose their jobs. more than 200 rare and exotic birds today seized today from the back of a store in new jersey. rescue volunteers

the common core rollout was a disaster. parents knew it. teachers knew it. and now, governor cuomo's task force is doing what's right. state tests don't unfairly count against students. and test scores won't be used in teacher evaluations. less testing. greater focus on learning. that's a start, but there's more to do. let's work together to support sensible and fair learning standards

apple's itunes radio will no longer be free. the company broke the news to customers in an e-mail. beats one will be the only free radio station from apple. all the stations will require a paid apple music subscription of $9.99 a month. itunes radio launched in 2013 when apple introduced a new operating system for mobile devices.

inch. normally we get our first measurable snow in the middle of december. more than a month late. 17 the feels like reading in brooklyn. 9 is what it feels like at jfk. subzero wind chills off to the north and west. you see in the cores of this cold air is actually still to our west. we have the worst of it to go tonight in to the day tomorrow. things will start to recover. wind chills 10 to 20 below in the upper midwest. we'll have the wind chills bottom out during the morning hours tomorrow then a recovery by the time we get to wednesday. couple of isolated snow showers tonight could recreate icy spots. otherwise partly cloudy to clear. lots of sunshine. that's not the problem tomorrow. it's the wind gust 30 to 40 miles per hour. snow showers, skies seem to be clearing out right now. looks like a couple snow showers will be able to survive. meanwhile we turn our attention to some storms out west. this one is one we'll watch for wednesday night. it's

it may throw a little bit of light snow back on us wednesday night in to thursday morning so may have to watch out for a couple coatings there. then the one you're hearing about. this is very significant. the key piece of that system is still out over the pacific so once it comes inland then our forecast, the accuracy is going to go way up. right now there's a lot of consensus this far out for a big storm along the east coast but the storm track will get more exact over the next 48 hours. tonight a couple snow showers. we drop down in to the teens. big story is the wind. lots of 19 tonight, feels like 5. subzero shower. 29 tomorrow, bitter gusts, feeling like 10. clear and frigid with diminishing wind. on wednesday not as harsh but we'll be watching the storm coming across and maybe linking up with a disturbance offshore and giving us a little bit of snow. it's friday and late in the day if not at night that a coastal storm, we're very

sixers came in 0-24 against teams from the east. this team had carmelo anthony back on the floor for the first time since last week. chrisops porzingis, 16 points, 12 rebounds. 4th quarter, uh-oh. porzingis hurts his right foot. had to leave the game. no x-rays. porzingis says he's fine. we'll see. the knicks need anthony's 3-pointer to send this game to overtime. the sixers get their own 3-pointer to send the game to double overtime where finally the knicks get breathing room. arron afflalo, 25 points. knicks win 119-113 in double overtime. laura behnke helps us make sense of it all. >> the knicks didn't make it easy for themselves. >> that philly team is a team that's definitely improving. just very happy to get out of here with a win.

win, especially when it snaps a two-game skid. >> any time you figure out a way to win, you obviously want to learn from everything that happens out there but you can't be upset about winning. >> i live for moments like that. some games it costs me to take that shot and some games it don't and today was one of those games where it cost me to take that and make it. >> reporter: chrisops porzingis sat out both overtimes for precautionary reasons and games. >> always want to be there on the floor, especially sitting on the sideline and knowing i might help the team in those situations but i'm really proud of the team. >> reporter: as for carmelo anthony, after missing the last two games with an ankle injury, he played nearly 15 minutes today, afterwards admitting the ankle is very sore. he is, however, optimistic he'll be with the knicks at the garden, laura behnke, channel 7 eyewitness news.

broncos, patriots . peyton manning started his first game since mid-november. not a great game but he had a great long career, right? and manning uses every tool he has, even hitting the deck, getting back up to complete a thirty-four-yard pass to emmanuel sanders. manning does this a lot. the refs didn't think he gave himself up so the play continued as manning knew it would. >> i told emmanuel to be alert, kind of a fall down, get back up to uncover the sideline. don't really want to analyze this play too much. i'd kind of like it to go away. tennis, australian open underway. couple of big names lost their opening matches. caroline wozniacki, sloane stephens. novak djokovic trying to win for the sixth straight year. 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. serena williams a winner as well. going for her 22nd major championship.
