one more night of bitter cold then all eyes are on the chance for a snowstorm headed our way for the weekend. good evening at 11:00. >> it's another bitter night out there. those outside bundling up to stay safe in these bitter temperatures. aj ross is in bayonne. >> we're going to begin with meteorologist lee goldberg. >> learning things by the minute. here's what's new at 11:00. the bitter gusts are subsiding. we'll go back above freezing for the first time

only get more precise. the storm track has been trending south but not enough to spare the area from a significant snowstorm. the wind gusts are starting to back off. they're still rather bitter and gusting over 30 in spots. i feel like a reading of 21 will take. it's been in the single digits much of the day. temperatures in the teens. then they get closer to 30 during the afternoon. this is the storm that will evolve in to our east coast snowstorm. it dived down in to the south. that was depicted 200 miles north and east of this position. when i showed you that at 6:00. again the track trending farther south. the one closer would be more snow. farther south, less snow, but still accumulating snow. the snow is going to hold off till friday night. friday up to early evening should be okay. early saturday morning even some places to the north. the far northern suburbs may see the lowest snow totals. northeast winds will cause coastal flooding.

new information, we'll tweak that 7-day accuweather forecast. i'll see you in a few minutes. working in the cold, tough for anybody, but fighting a fire with water that freezes, nothing harder than that. that was the challenge tonight for firefighters from several communities in new jersey who converged on the hudson county city of bayonne to battle a fierce blaze that's ruined businesses and homes. aj ross at the scene. >> fighting intense flames on a bitter cold night. firefighters here in bayonne were not only working under pressure but extreme conditions. in fact, they used so much water to battle this blaze, sections of broadway are still iced over. meanwhile a dozen families lost their homes tonight. >> reporter: bright, intense, and unrelenting. bayonne firefighters suddenly found themselves in a face-off with not only flames but frigid temps. a fire quickly consumed several apartments and businesses along brauzway. -- broadway. >> i smelled something burning. >> reporter: smoke

seen from miles as firefighters from several surrounding communities attacked the raging fire from every direction. >> one of our firefighters, when he got trapped up on the 3rd floor, managed to get out through a window. >> reporter: bayonne fire chief greg rogers admits the freezing temps also presented another set of challenges. >> conditions here are cold. it's really freezing, slippery. ice everywhere. a lot of guys were going down. >> reporter: after several hours firefighters managed to get the blaze under control but nearly a dozen apartment units between three buildings were severely damaged. in addition to a restaurant and clock store. >> scared. there's little kids that lived in there. little girls. >> it's freezing. we have no nowhere to go. so we're just kind of -- >> what are you going to do? >> we don't know what we're going to do. >> according to the red cross 20 people are displaced tonight. they're providing assistance and shelter to some of them at bayonne high school. live tonight in bayonne, aj ross,

developing news on long island. two people crossing the street seriously hurt tonight after being hit by a car. it happened earlier tonight at the intersection in manhasset. police say a woman and a teenaged girl were struck. the driver stayed at the scene. the woman is in critical condition. the girl was seriously hurt but expected to survive. no charges are expected to be filed against the driver. new at 11:00, a long work day made even longer by a frustrating commute through penn station. a domino effect from a disabled train forcing dozens of lirr trains to be canceled. many more long delayed because of congestion as the railroad operated on a single track. all of this leaving thousands of people staring at the train schedule in disbelief. a contentious face-off in new jersey tonight over proposed plan to build a muslim community center. demonstrators on both sides of the issue protested outside city hall in bayonne today before a public meeting to discuss the issue. local muslims want to convert a vacant warehouse on 24th street in to

the zoning vote on the project is expected next week. new tonight, a serial armed robber on the loose on long island tonight. nearly two dozen robberies in the past year. small businesses and in all of them, the robber brandished a knife. tonight cops in nassau county putting out the thief, hoping to catch him. here's sandra bookman. >> take a good look. this is the knife-wielding bandit police say has preyed on small businesses for nearly a year. >> the subject is brazen and aggressive, and has injured one individual by slashing the victim's arm. >> reporter: since february of 2015, 21 businesses have been robbed from gas stations to pharmacies to pizza shops in six different communities. 13 robberies in valley stream alone. police say the same suspect hit charlene's gift

on three different occasions. >> we believe he's staking out the store. he makes sure there is nobody else in the store most of the time and he's very quick. he's in and he's out. >> reporter: police describe the suspect about 5'10" to 6 feet tall usually wearing a ski mask or scarf covering his face. as he did when he hit this gas station just two days ago, he takes cash, lottery tickets, and cigarettes and makes his getaway on foot. a $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest. in valley stream, long island, sandra bookman, channel 7 eyewitness news. police tonight releasing clear images of a suspect wanted in a random slashing attack in the east village. take a good look. investigators say this is the man who slashed a social worker on east 6th street saturday. anthony christopher-smith needed 150 stitches to close the wound on his face.

do a nerve graft during eight hours of surgery. the three columbia students who died in a bus accident last week in honduras tonight remembered on campus in manhattan where they went to school. they spent winter break providing medical services to the poor. tonight columbia students filled with sorrow for the deaths but celebrating their lives. here's eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer. >> reporter: their dedication to helping others, the memory of their work. the lives of olivia erhardt, daniella moffson, and abigail flanagan were remembered in a candlelight vigil. >> our community has been diminished by their loss. >> reporter: hundreds huddled against the biting cold on their families members also attending. >> brave and caring individuals who were engaged in extending themselves in order to help others very much in need. >> reporter: the three were leaving honduras where they

his $50,000 bail tonight on charges he sexually abused two patients. prosecutors say dr. david newman groped and committed a lewd act on a 22-year-old patient last week after incapacitating her with a dose of morphine and another 22-year-old woman says dr. newman sexually abused her during an examination. mount sinai has suspended the doctor. republican presidential candidate donald trump feeling the sting of ultra conservatives that he has new york values, tonight picking up the endorsement of one of the country's best known ultra conservatives, who, like mr. trump, is often a polarizing figure. sarah palin. >> are you ready to make america great again? >> the former governor of alaska and vice presidential nominee joining him two and a half weeks before the iowa caucuses. >> you ready for a commander in

the actor jamie foxx speaking out tonight after he saved a man from a burning car. the high stakes drama playing out in front of foxx's home about an hour north of los angeles. a truck hit a drainage ditch then rolled over several times before bursting in to flames. that's when mr. foxx jumped in to action. >> luckily a guy pulls up, he has emt scissors. i don't look at it as heroic. i look at it

>> that was heroic. the man was taken to the hospital with injuries including broken bones but he is expected to recover. new at 11:00, two pregnant women are being monitored by doctors tonight in illinois after they tested positive for zika virus. the women recently traveled to country where the mosquito-borne viral infection is found. none of the patients is contagious. a greyhound bus driver admitting to authorities that he felt fatigued and stopped for coffee, all this moments before a deadly crash. the bus plowed in to safety barrels then rolled on its side. this was in california. driver being tested for drugs and alcohol. ntsb has taken over the investigation. the holidays are long gone but not the bills left behind. many people went over budget and

>> yes, at least on one particular computer model but there's no concrete evidence to jump in and say all our eggs are in that basket at this point because there's still plenty of evidence to secure a very substantial snowstorm in the area. that's certainly still on the table. midtown manhattan with a couple patchy clouds out there right now. we're at 28. the air is dry right now, barometer on the rise. we're very chilly but we're coming off the core of the cold. average high, 38. we make a run at that tomorrow. long island, even a 30. poughkeepsie at 30 degrees. 25 in belmar. even temperatures stabilizing to a point. sunshine yielding to clouds but above freezing. northwest winds, which is still noticeable tomorrow morning. 16 to 18-mile-per-hour winds. 6 to 12 during the day. doesn't completely go away but it's not the biting wind gusting to 40 like it was today. this area of snowfall will dry out as it

we track our storm diving down in to the south by thursday afternoon then coming up the coast and the critical track is how close does it come? certainly close enough that i think the accumulating snows are over the entire area. our far northern suburbs may be out of reach of the biggest snow totals. looks like we'll have accumulating snows, big travel delays along i-95. coastal winds, coastal flooding a big concern. i did not have to change any of these percentages since early evening. i still like the highest percentages in the 6 to 12-inch category as an average. in terms of a miss to a few inches, i think that's a 1 in 5 shot. 25% shot of 3 to 6 inches. still a small shot of that foot to foot and a half but i think it's probably lower than that. as you go north of new york city the totals could diminish a little bit. clear and very cold at 7:00 in the

25 degrees. tomorrow up to 37 so it's not as harsh. dress warm in the morning. at least the wind is not as bad. here's your 7 -day accuweather forecast. clouds increasing on friday. and again, i can't impress upon you enough i think your friday early evening travel is fine. it's later friday night and saturday would be the brunt of the storm with the strongest winds and heaviest snow. maybe some to an end. even snow on sunday morning before things begin to wind down. there's no arctic air behind this storm. it will actually warm up a little bit and things will start melting whatever type of snowfall we get. so we're a couple hours away. i know i'm going to stay up through 1:00 in the morning to see a computer model run that's going to be pretty key. still onboard with accumulating snowfall. up next, how mcdonald's wants to make its french fries a dessert item.
