slippery streets. for many, this was a day to enjoy all the snow. >> and good evening. i'm joe torres. >> i'm sandra bookman. the problem with this storm tonight is the long island railroad full service not expected for the morning rush hour. >> times square filled with people. broadway shows resumed this afternoon. most major roads are in pretty good shape. this is a live picture of the george washington bridge. as people dig out, mayor de blasio is giving drivers a reprieve. new york city schools will be open tomorrow. >> falling ice from a highrise forced the closure of broadway from 53rd to 54th street. there was flooding in low-lying communities. during high tide this morning. schools in newark, and jersey city are closed tomorrow.

on the bottom of the screen. as for mass transit, buses and subways are running. >> new jersey trains are running but a lot of cancellations. expect detours on bus routes. as for mass transit, the long island railroad is suspended right now. we have reporters throughout the area covering the clean-up and the continuing blizzard problems. >> we >> reporter: joe, i'm told a statement from the governor's office is expected within the hour. but sources tell me that service will not be fully restored on the long island railroad tomorrow morning in time for the morning rush hour. although rail workers have been working really hard on this. 24 hours, they will be working around the clock essentially. they have found a fairly serious impact.

this is a portion of the track. you can see the switch-over had to be dug out. they are doing that up and down the line. the storm's impact. more severe than first believed. snow covered tracks, switches and stranded trains. the long island railroad is in a race against time tonight. struggling to restore at least partial service for the morning rush hour. but sources tell eyewitness news that the storm's impact is worse than first believed. some of the railroad is still snowed in more than 24 hours after the train stopped running. with snow covered trains and snow covered tracks and frozen switches. the problem is they have to clear the tracks. not just clear the tracks of snow and ice, but from stranded trains. this is the huntington train station. there is a train stopped here in the station. but just a short distance away, there's another train. this is just one part of a very large system.

back up and running again until they clear the tracks of snow, ice, and stranded trains. sources say up to 15 trains were stranded as the storm intensified. none of them with passengers. damage to the railcars and locomotives is still being assessed and could impact commutes for days, even after service is restored. penn station was deserted in the middle of the afternoon today with would-be riders showing up with trains that won't depart for hours. it is. i took a picture myself. >> reporter: when they work to restores service after a major storm, they focus on the main line first and then work their way to the huntington and babalon branches. then they will work their way

all in an effort to restore full service. but, again, sources tell me that service not expected to be fully restored in time for the morning rush hour. a statement is expected from the governor's office shortly. as soon as we have the details, we will get them to you. channel 7 eyewitness news. >> now to a tragedy that killed a mother and son in new jersey. they dade when the tailpipe of their car was covered by the snow from the blizzard. eyewitness news reporter jim hoffer is there tonight. jim. >> reporter: well, the mother and her two children inside this car behind me. you can see it over the shoulder. the top of the roof peeking out from the huge mound of snow. inside trying to stay warm as the father out from the huge mound of snow. in a matter of minutes, an odorless, invisible gas claimed the lives of two people, the only two people to die in new

flowers marked the spot where a mother and son died being overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning. >> i see the guy helping two kids. couldn't brief. >> reporter: isabel stepped outside her home around 8:00 to a man frantic as his wife and two kids had lost consciousness inside the car, trying to stay warm as the father tried to dig the car out from two feet of snow. >> i know the boy did not have life. he was like this. i tried and tried. and my nephew tried and tried. the paramedics tried and tried. they worked so hard. >> reporter: it was too late. the 3-year-old little girl is in very critical condition at a hospital in patterson. her survival due perhaps to the paramedics and this woman who was not afraid to get involved. >> i tried to help the girl.

paramedics worked so hard. >> reporter: the mother and child are the only deaths in new jersey attributed to the storm. a silent killer, carbon monoxide that strikes quickly and with little warning. >> any snow that covers your tailpipe, you want to first and foremost shovel out the snow in the rear of the vehicle where the tailpipe is before you even start the vehicle. >> reporter: now, just minutes ago, just before going on the air here, the grandfather of the two little children pulled up in his car and got out and walked over to the car. i guess to pay tribute, to see where this happened. to try to understand how something could happen, how it could happen so quickly. you can see the pain etched in his face and you could hear the pain in his voice as he spoke briefly to us. here is what he had to say. >> i can't even believe it.

i -- i didn't even -- it's hard, man. it's hard. hard. two lovely people, healthy people. >> reporter: this unfortunately is not that uncommon a thing, particularly in huge snowstorms. the center for disease control states in any given year, about 150 people lose their lives to carbon monoxide poisoning inside cars. for now we're live in pasaic, jim hoffer, channel 7 eyewitness news. the cancellation of several schools in new jersey. eyewitness news reporter a.j. ross is in newark where they got about 34 inches of snow. right, a.j. >> reporter: that is absolutely right, sandra. this storm came in hard and fast, wrecking havoc on area

we're here along jefferson street. it is literally walking distance from downtown newark and it is still a mess. in the last 90 minutes that we have been here, we have witnessed three different cars getting stuck. it will be a while before things get back to normal. buried under more than two feet of snow, public works crews in newark, like many areas in the tri-state have their work cut out for them with densely snow covered streets and trapped cars seemingly a common sight. despite a travel ban, a lot of people didn't heed those warnings, which resulted in dozens of cars and first responder vehicles getting stuck in the inclement weather. >> we had to change our entire operation to begin using our snow plows to help ems, fire and everybody else to get through to rescue people off of the street. >> reporter: newark police say in all they received nearly 280 weather related calls, ranging from cars stuck in the snow to downed power now as the city continues clean-

of local snow plowing businesses, they're asking people to be patient through the process. >> please be patient and mindful of what is happening and allow us to do our job. >> reporter: here we are back on jefferson street. trucks are reversing. it appears there is another vehicle further down that is stuck again. we're also learning that newark city hall will be closed tomorrow as well. and the city is asking any area businesses that have snow plow equipment that want to team up, tag team and help tackle this really big clean-up effort to reach out to them through the department of sanitation. live tonight in newark, i'm a.j. ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> they will take all the help they can get. back here in new york city we were cheated out by the record by one-tenth of an inch. somebody not happy about that fact. meteorologist jeff smith with

>> it kind of pains me to show you this list here. the 1888 blizzard. the january 1996 blizzard. but we look back on the february 2006 storm and the snowfall distribution in that was over a small area over, say, mid town and central park. this one had a much more impressive and high impact swath of snowfall. two to three feet over much of central and northern new jersey, the five boroughs of new york city and the two thirds of long island. here are some of the selected amounts. jackson heights leading all the list right now in the tri-state area in queens. 34 inches of snow. port richmond, staten island, over 31 inches. belmont section of the bronx getting 27.6 inches. in new jersey, long valley and morris county 30 inches of snow. burners township about 30

just over 28 inches in newark. 35 in central park right now. temperatures have above freezing. the problem is with the snow pack around, it act as a refrigerator and allows it to get colder than it normally would. that means any standing water can freeze into black ice overnight. be careful out there tonight. we will have the full forecast coming up. >> thank you, jeff. now to digging out in new york city. the mayor ordered more snow equipment into neighborhoods in queens. as josh showed us on his facebook page, some areas in jackson heights had not been plowed this afternoon, long after the snow stopped falling. josh, that area got about 27 inches. right, josh? >> reporter: yeah. and they're feeling every one of those 27 inches, sandra. since we saw you at 5:00 and we

worker with a shovel trying to get this truck out that had been stuck since 2:00 in the morning. there is a wrecker hooked up to the garbage truck. they will back it down the narrow street. this is a small taste of what the sanitation department has been up against after this monster storm socked in the narrow streets of queens. they took matters into their own hands. >> this man has been shoveling for three hours trying to come down the block. >> reporter: after all, they didn't have much of a choice. >> i have children. god forbid there was somebody sick. there are elderly people on the block. you can't get down the block. >> reporter: it left neighborhoods impassable in the city's largest borough where residents have 2 million complaints. >> they haven't plowed at all. >> i know people want their streets cleared. reinforcements are coming intensely into queens to get that work done. >> reporter: the mayor hears you if you live in queens. today he sent the calvary to help.

off on clearing out their own cars to leave snow plows room to work. >> just clean up the street and go back to work. that's all. >> reporter: his green cab looks like it's just out of a car wash. he did his pardon -- his part, he paid his taxes. >> reporter: lou is not laughing. >> manhattan is beautiful probably. you don't probably even see snow in manhattan. over here, you see everything. >> reporter: and after every storm, of course, there's a borough or a neighborhood that has that sensation. that's how a lot of people feel here today across the neighborhoods in queens. the mayor is asking you once they do manage to clear a lot of these streets, they are asking that you hold off on digging out your own car. the person who owns this car, when they dig it out, all of this snow will go right in the

we're going to look live now at jfk airport. according to flightaware.com, 52% of flights were canceled at kennedy today. 75% of flights canceled out of lugardia. 60% of flights out of newark were canceled. 500 flights have been canceled tomorrow, mostly out of newark. grab a shovel and make some cash in new york city. the sanitation department is hiring emergency snow laborers. they will remove snow from places including bus stops, crosswalks and fire hydrants throughout the five boroughs. if you are interested, head to a sanitation garage between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. this week. pay starts at $13.50 an hour. and when we come back,

>> with the thawing today, black ice certainly a concern tonight. >> this will be a pattern all week. we got thawing and then refreezing at night. we head outside tonight and we see the blacktop outside of our studios on columbus avenue. temperature up to 35 degrees. it went a couple degrees above freezing tonight. that will quickly fall overnight tonight with the calm winds. watch for black ice the next couple of nights.

with near normal temperatures. the mildest day during the workweek is tuesday when we get up into the low 40s. it gets so warm that when precipitation comes in late tuesday, and it will just be a shower, it would be in the form of rain. right now 33. down to 32 at newark. you were up to 35 last hour. that has fallen off a few degrees quickly. 27 at monticello. you're actually in the 20s down by the shore. already refreezing occurring there. a little patch of clouds moving over right now. mainly clear skies overnight tonight. there goes our blizzard. a shadow of its former self out in the atlantic ocean. we will track everything for you on futurecast. look at the temperatures tumble overnight. in the outlying areas getting well down into the teens. during the day, back above freezing. very similar highs to today. then we look ahead to tuesday.
