is moving full speed ahead but the hassles just beginning as the people prepare to head back to work. >> for your morning commute, plan ahead and leave early. mass transit is back up and running you may still run into delays. >> especially if you live on long island. four lirr branches will remain shutdown and seven will have full service. >> there are some schools closed tomorrow in new jersey, long island and a few in new york city. those school closings are running at the bottom of your screen and posted on www.abc7ny.com. >> we have a team of reporters tonight. we'll begin with nj burkett with the new details on lirr service. he's in huntington tonight. >> reporter: that's right, sandra, just east of the huntington train station. this is one of several branch that is railroad officials insist will be up and running by 5:00 tomorrow. no, others will not.

commuters into new york city tomorrow. >> that's good enough for me. that works. >> reporter: many commuters are relieved tonight despite the empty parking lots and deserted flat forms. railroad officials say their busiest branches will be up and running at daybreak. it's a race against time. rail workers are struggling to get the trains in place to restore at least partial service for the morning rush hour. it's not enough to clear the tracks of snow. not enough to get the ice off the switches. before they can get the system and you happen running they'll have to clear all of the stranded trains before this train can leave huntington station they'll have to tow the it. i'm told the height of the storm as many of a dozen trains became stranded and all of them fortunately without passengers. the impact of the storm was worse than first believed. some trains were snowed in more

the railroads network of switches and third rail power needed to be test and had reactivated. there will be no service on the hempstead, west hempstead, far rockway and long branches. they'll be limited service on the montauk branch. roy nasa arrived after an $85 cab ride from jamaica. he doesn't understand why the railroad isn't already running. >> parkways are clear, everything was -- most of the roads were open. where's the long island railroad in all of this? disappointing. >> reporter: again, to recap, railroad officials say the busiest branches will have normal service and by that, they mean the back lon -- workers will be working around the clock to make that happen.

island, nj burkett channel 7 eye witness news. >> thank you. what if you don't ride the long island railroad? what can you expect? here's a look at the rest of mass transit. work is underway to restore new jersey transit to full service. there are some lines with limited or suspended services. metro north is back at full service but some trains may be cancelled or combined. port authority crews worked hard to clear the path for train tracks. some of the drifts there were 16 feet high. service is now restored except between newark and journal square. if you take the subway, good news. all the trains are now back in service and buses are also in service but there could be detours due to the messy streets. finally for all you air travelers, our local airports are open and flights will take off tomorrow.

380 flights have already been cancelled. sandra. >> perhaps if the airports aren't already having enough trouble, two delta planes clipped wings at newark. an md 80 was waiting for a gate as a 767 was being towed to a separate gate. the wings clipped. no word on the extent of the damage to the aircraft. no one was hurt. the faa is investigating. >> perhaps nowhere is the digging out more of a problem than this queens. the borough can boast racking up the most snow during this snow. that also means some of the biggest post blizzard headaches. cars encased in snow on two narrow streets that haven't even caught a glimpse of a plow. the good news is alternate side parking is suspended until february 1st. josh einiger is in sunnyside tonight. >> reporter: more good news here in sunnyside.

around 9:00 we had to search for a street that was not passable. that giant front end loader has arrive and had it's been making its way down the block and way in the distance we're going to zoom down. there's another set of red lights on the next block. that's a stranded garbage truck with a plow on the front. the front end loader is making its way there to free that truck and open this street once and for all. they have been making progress tonight. for people who live here, it's still been way too slow. across the city's largest burro tonight sanitation crews were busy rescuing their own equipment as they were clearing thousands of narrow side streets. the aftermath of the blizzard left ten plow trucks marooned in deep snow and if the sanitation crews were having trouble. >> it's a mess.

for the rest of the borough. phillip from sunnyside thought his suv would make it. it did not. >> i'm frustrated because look, i live on this block over here and they haven't cleaned anything over here. >> i don't know why they forgot about us. >> reporter: the anger intensified as the clean up began today and the mayor admitted the sanitation department fell short thanks to the sheer size and the overwhelming snowfall. >> i'm certainly not satisfied with the condition of the roads and neighborhoods in queens. >> reporter: the administration quickly sent reenforcements but the going wasn't easy. we witnessed a string of setbacks as they dried to dig out this van which was stranded and caught fire. a pair of front end loaders got stuck and slid into a parked car. city leaders blame drivers like patrick and ryan for cleaning

more snow on the street to be plowed. in fact, anyone caught doing this faces a fine but these guys are not impressed. >> how are we going to get work? the mayor isn't going to pay the bills, is he? >> reporter: back live here in sunny side that front end loader is creating a mini mountain of snow. maybe about 50 feets worth of this road is right here in this giant mountain that he packed down here. the mayor, city officials want you to keep your cars parked. don't want more snow on the streets. that's why alternate side of the street rules are suspended until a week from tomorrow. josh einiger channel 7 eye witness news. >> josh, there's also a big digout underway in the garden state. this video shot by a drone shows parts of jackson, new jersey,

an avalanche of snow forced administrators to cancel class tomorrow. in new jersey's largest city, a winter mess. the clean up there means plenty of work for some city employees and no work for others. eye witness news reporter aj ross explains. she's in newark tonight. >> reporter: hey, there, joe, no work and no school for a lot of people and kids here in newark and here's why. this is a great visual. a lot of secondary streets look like this and jefferson street, which we're on right now is one of the better streets in and around this downtown area. i've lost count of how many cars have been stuck along this street today and as fast as the storm came in, it's going to take much, much longer to clear away. in the aftermath of an epic snowstorm, the road to recovery isn't too clear. >> we slid on the bus and we slid all the way down here.

out my car. >> reporter: buried under more than two feet of snow drivers were forced to dig and navigate through a maze as sorts. many secondary roads are still impassable. >> i live on ferry street, which is a main street and i didn't see any plows come through until midday today. it wasn't done yesterday. just happened midday today. i think it's pretty bad. >> reporter: in light of the cleaning efforts newark public schools cancelled schools monday adding to a list. parents say they're disappointed about the lost school day but safety comes first. >> it's a good call because the roads are nasty. i'm mad they're missing school but i'd rather my kids be safe. >> reporter: are you excited to miss school tomorrow? why is that? >> i don't know. >> reporter: newark city hall

definitely have unique issues to say the least. i think the forecast will help the clean up in that each of the days this week get a little bit above freezing and we'll get gradual melting. it won't happen quickly enough to cause flooding but the problems arise when you get the massive puddles forming and also at night when you get temperatures below freezing and any melting that occurs and any standing water that you have tends to refreeze. right now the temperature at refreezing in central park but expected to dip well down in the lower 20s by early in the morning. you're already down in the 20s in places like newark. 31 at jfk where they got over 30 inches in this storm. temperatures down in the 20 and up towards monticello where you barely got a flake of snow. 18 at tom's river. this is what happens when you get a deep snow pack it acts as a refrigerator and that kind of keeps it colder at night than it

this historic storm was also a deadly storm and the death toll climbs tonight up and down the east coast 26 people died. seven of those deaths were in the tri-state area. among them, a mother and her 1-year-old son from pasaic. they were overcome with carbon monoxide while inside their car. >> reporter: joe, a 3-year-old girl inside the st. joseph medical center here tonight. she's struggling and fighting against tremendous odds that she'll be able to survive a carbon monoxide poisoning that

it's as cold and sad a scene from the blizzard of 2016 as any. the anguish of the faces of those who passed by reveal the depth of their loss. inside this car, her mother and her 1-year-old son took their last breath as carbon monoxide filled the vehicle. >> it's hard, man. it's hard. it's hard. two lovely and healthy people. >> reporter: his son had been digging out the family's car last night while his girlfriend and their two children sat inside to stay warm. with the car 's engine on and the tail pipe clogged by snow the odorless invisible gas seeped in and in minutes killed the mother and the baby boy. the little girl was kept alive by paramedics and perhaps a bystander not afraid.

i put my mouth in the girl and the paramedic was so happy to help the kid. >> reporter: tonight the little girl is in critical condition at this hospital and her grandfather hangs onto a thread of hope. >> the doctor say she has a slight chance to make it. >> reporter: friends say the father was not working at a restaurant spends all his time with his children. he's been by his surviving child's bedside. his father says his son is devastated. >> my son is not doing good. he's real bad. >> reporter: a first responder telling us earlier that if nothing else comes out of this tragedy let it at least be a reminder and an education that when digging your car out from a snowstorm the first thing you do is clear the back of the car of any snow.

live in patterson, jim hofer, channel 7 eye witness news. >> thank you very much. even with the cleanup underway, so much snow on the ground. it's going to be days before we get rid of most of it. from the air, the white cap city is impressive and beautiful. this bird's eye view courtesy of an nypd chopper. on the ground navigating the slowey sludge is like running an obstacle course. >> reporter: sandra, an obstacle course, in deed. this is the big problem. the snow mounds you're finding throughout the city. there's really no opening so you're finding yourself having to literally climb over to get to the other side and if you're not ready for this kind of thing come monday you're in trouble. >> tread carefully and look before you leap. >> reporter: literally. from falling ice to slippery

navigate this. >> just snow mountains and maneuvering over them. >> reporter: what about the puddles? >> they're the worst. >> i saw two people fall today. >> reporter: it's not so much ice that's the problem it's the soft slushy snow filled with some surprises. don't even think about driving in it. mayor cancelled no alter nantive side parking. we saw people getting down to the subway was another test this woman refused to fail. >> i've been taking my time. very carefully. i don't intend to fall. >> reporter: so if you, too, don't want to be a statistic come monday. >> boots are a must. no shoes or sneakers.

north shore-lij is now northwell health. look north. >> some towns along the jersey shore are dealing with all the flooding from the storm surge. the huge waves submerged some towns and more than nine feet of water turning streets into icy canals. hundreds of people had to be rescued. some towns faired better than expected like bell mar where the rebuilt sand dunes held up. he showed video showing how the dunes protected them. >> preparation did make the difference.

>> getting prepared for all the snow, some of it you couldn't prepare for i guess. >> no, not in this case. when you get that much snow in that short amount of time they'll be issues to deal with. we still have that during the week. they'll be black ice. each and every night of the week it'll be a recuring pattern. temperatures get above freezing and then below freezing at night. the shoulders of roadways and parking lots and wanted to show you pictures of the beautiful sunset that we had out there tonight. just a surreal scene as we have the snow on the deep snow pack on the ground and the clear skies and some high clouds moving in causing it to look prettier. another pretty shot lit up for the nfc and the afc championship games. right now the temperature is

44% and the wind is calm and the pressure rising 30.11. watch for that formation of black ice during the nighttime hours. daytime melting with near normal temperatures. it won't be melting all at once and causing flooding issues but as charlene was talking about street corners. those will be tough to navigate. a shower could show up late in the day tuesday and that would be a shower of rain, not snow. temperatures will be warm enough by then. 29 in newark, 33 at la guardia. many in the suburbs are in the 20s and teens down towards tom's river. the deep snow pack and the sheltered areas away from the city and probably get down in the single digits overnight. still a flood advisory for the south shore of long island and that expires in a half hour and

normal. radar and satellite showing one little area of clouds moving over and we're well down in the teens and suburbs by 7 in the morning. back above freezing during the day tomorrow and well above freezing into the low 40s on tuesday and with a front moving in, they'll probably be a shower or two by late in the afternoon. here's the accuweather forecast overnight clear and watch for the black ice, down to 18 and 5 in the outlying spots. mostly clear and cold and sunrise at 20. 35 in the afternoon under partly sunny skies. some cloudy sxns watch for the black ice. we're down to 28. here's the accuweather 7-day forecast. could be a late shower tuesday. as we head into wednesday mainly cloudy. wednesday there could be a rain or snow shower in the morning as the front tries to linger along the coast. thursday we get a break, 37. clouds increase again on friday. that could be interesting. there's going to be an off shore

odds would favor staying off shore. it could spread with some snow into parts of the area and we're back up in the 40s by saturday into sunday. that's a low probability at this point of that happening. we'll keep an eye on it. >> low probability. >> after what we just went through. super bowl 50 will be a contest between the season vet and superman. the afc championship was a great defensive battle that was tight until the end.

gives ottawa the 2-0 lead and the rangers fall 3-0. a couple of local college basketball teams are getting back on track after the snow wiped out their games. st. johns takes on marquette. they trailed by 20 in the first but this 3 from johnson cut it to 4 with under a minute to play. 78-73 the comeback falls short and st. john's has lost ten in a row. syracuse taking on number 13 virginia in charlottesville where they're enjoying the snow. london finds anthony gill for the alley-oop. he had 16 in this one. virginia holds up and malcolm hits a couple of big 3's and 73-65 syracuse falls to virginia. that's it in sports. >> all right. busy day.

for tomorrow and most are in new jersey including newark schools. you can see those running at the crawl at the bottom of your screen and on www.abc7ny.com. mass transit is returning to normal. most of the service has been restored but they'll be delays and some exceptions. make sure you plan ahead and leave early. top thing news this half hour the long island railroad the morning rush will not be normal. >> sources say the problem centers on the storm damage to trains and equipment. equipment that must be repaired. eye witness news reporter nj burkett who broke the story earlier today he's in huntington with the latest on what riders can expect tomorrow morning. >> reporter: that's right, joe. just east of the huntington train station we've seen several trains moving up and down the line throughout the evening. they're clearing the tracks and clear stranded trains and getting other trains in place.

this is a very big job. to be clear the railroad says you only have to be concerned if you take the hempstead, west hempstead, far rockway and long beach branches or if you take the train into or out of the terminal. porch jefferson branch for example are expected to be up and running. overall railroad officials are promising a better experience that today. >> i do not remember looking at this. i just took a picture myself to remember. >> reporter: well, the impact of the system worse than first believed. railroad officials are going to face a number of questions about why this system isn't up and running already. live tonight, nj burkett channel 7 eye witness news.

thank you very much, nj. long island residents trying to get around by cars aren't having an easy time either. they used shovels and snow blowers and pushing to dislodge this car stuck in the snow. it took a lot of hard work but they finally managed to get it moving. now back to the clean up in the 5 boroughs as people on coney island used snow blowers to clear the streets. the mayor ordered more snow blowers to queens when they complained streets weren't being cleaned up fast enough. >> reporter: you take one of the biggest snowstorms in new york city history, the biggest borough in the city of new york known for its narrow and sometimes hilly streets and this is what happens. there has been some progress. we'll show you brand new video in the last 15 minutes or so as

quick work of 39th place in sunnyside. as recently as 10:00 it was impassable 24 hours after the snow stopped. the mayor admitted he was not impressed with sanitation performance in hard hit queens and they sent reenforcements to get the roads clear. the mayor is imploring car owners to leave the cars parked to prevent dumping more snow on the street. >> i think this is a huge snowstorm that i don't know where you're going to put the snow. i guess it's one of those things people have to wait it out until it melts somewhat. what can they do? even if they come by where are they going to put the snow? >> reporter: the mayor understands some people will need to go to work. he's trying to make it easier by suspending alternate side cleaning rules so you don't have

a machete attack leaves a bronx woman dead. 59-year-old carmen torres gonzalez was having a conversation outside of an apartment at the mott haven houses this evening when a neighbor reportedly pulled out a machete and killed her. police are speaking with the suspect at this hour. no charges at this time. fire and ice in hell's kitchen this morning. firefighters had to work over a big pile of snow to battle a blaze. smoke poured out of the eat ri empanada mama as fire burned out of the basement. no one was injured. new jersey governor chris christie out of new jersey at this hour and back on the campaign trail. he talked about the snowstorm at a campaign rally in new hampshire. christie explained that unlike new jersey he did not have to impose travel ban. the reason? he says that the people of new

follow his requests to stay off the road. the democratic candidates are talking about former new york city mayor michael bloomberg's potential presidential run. hillary clinton said it is her understanding he would only run if she did not get the nomination and she doesn't plan on letting that happen. >> he's a good friend of mine and i'm going to do the best i can to make sure that i get the nomination and we'll go from there. >> as for bernie sanders he says he'll win the election even if bloomberg runs as an independent. a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked alaska destroying four homes through gas leak, explosions or fires. the quake was centered 160 miles southwest of ancorage. it's the largest earthquake to hit in decades. no reports of injuries.

temperatures a little bit above freezing. it won't melt at once and cause major flooding problems. temperature down to freezing right now in new york city as we take a look outside. this is outside of our studios. a big mess of snow mounds on the side of columbus avenue. 32 and cloudy right now. people were skiing on columbus avenue last night. this is an improvement over that. the wind is calm. calm scombind the clear skies or mainly clear skies that allows temperatures to really fall in a hurry. we're down to 22 by 6 in the morning. snow pack in the wintertime acts like a refrigerator making it colder than it would have been if we didn't have the snow. we missed the record of biggest storm by one tenth of an inch.
