where the piles are and just stopped, backed up, and that's the last thing i'd seen. >> reporter: off elliot avenue martin opted for a tape measure instead of a shovel. >> i thought you were measuring snow but you're not. >> i'm measuring the width of the street in between the cars and street banks. i have over 15 feet from car to car so a snow plow can get through. >> reporter: one hasn't been seen because they too are apparently having problems. this one spinning its wheels in corona. front loaders also stifled. this one had to be towed out in elmhurst. the driver had been inside since 3 a.m. sunday morning. sanitation workers happy to finally get it moving but not any happier than those living here. it's the secondary and tertiary streets in queens that sometimes didn't get relief in the hours following the storm. lots of snow remaining as you can see from these shots in news chopper

>> do you have anywhere to go that you needed the car? >> to work. >> so you're not going to work today? >> i had to call off because i work in long island so it's pretty hard. it's like too much of a commute. >> that was lauren glassberg reporting. even though new york city schools were open today, a lot of students didn't make it to class. today's attendance was 74%. compare that to an average of 91%. that's because much of the city is still struggling with all the snow. the mayor said today it will take time and he's hoping to get help from mother nature. eyewitness news political reporter dave evans is in lower manhattan where the great snow melt is underway. >> as you know, whenever we get more than 12 inches of snow in new york city, sanitation department goes in to something called haul and pile. that's what we see behind me, this large snow pile that's collected over the last day, day and a half. what they're going to do is take this snow, move it over

vehicle you can see behind the green oil truck. melt the snow and comes out the bottom as water and that water goes in to the sewer system. we're going to be seeing a lot of that in the next couple days. the mayor not happy about the cleanup in queens over the weekend. but he said overall the city, he's pretty well pleased. >> reporter: in the bronx this morning the big dig-out continued from record breaking snow across the city. >> now it's a little bit easy but next couple of days, maybe going to be a little bit more cold and going to be freezing from the bottom. >> reporter: but the mayor had a request. if you don't really need your car, leave it. don't shovel it out. just let mother nature take care of things these next few slightly warmer days. >> leave it so it doesn't end up in the street. if you put all your snow from the car back on the street, then your street is not passable, sanitation

>> reporter: he defended his decision, despite buses gettingtric. the -- despite buses getting stuck. the chancellor said it's okay to be a little late. >> it seems to be that people will take a little longer. >> reporter: on sidewalks the mayor praised the situation in some parts of the city but he asked business owners clear streets wide enough so a wheelchair or baby carriage could get through. if not, face a fine starting tonight. >> 3 or 4 feet will do. if you clear your sidewalk 3 or 4 feet, there will be no fines. if people don't clear their sidewalks we're going to start the process of applying fines. >> reporter: for now the focus remains on clearing all streets across the city. 19,000 miles of road. the mayor and his team admit some new yorkers have reason to be angry. >> we got to every street. some of those streets we got to

so they then received 20, 25 additional inches of snow. anyone looking at that will say that street has not been touched which is appropriate. >> so far the sanitation department has hired 920 day laborers to help with the snow removal. that's mostly shoveling. the mayor said the city needs several hundred more day laborers to help out with the snow removal. it pays $13.50 an hour. you can go to any sanitation garage in the city from 9:00 to 3:00 if you're interested. dave evans, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> a best way to get a sense of what streets have been plowed and what haven't is a bird's eye view. >> shannon, you're in richmond hill, queens.

looking there? >> i will say a lot of areas are phenomenal. this is not one of them. these two poor guys have been out here, they just freed someone with pure brute strength. they're digging out a second car. all of this, the intersection of 86th and 104th street. we want to give you perspective out. we do want to give you just a glimmer of hope because we're going to show you all of these streets look exactly the same and unfortunately it's a sheet of ice underneath them. just a little ways away this street here, 96th coming in at 85th looks exactly the same. looks like the plows haven't touched it yet but on the top part of the picture, there it is. the long plow we've seen through the area, starting to dig through the street but there's a lot of

not yet been touched and this lone plow isn't going to do it. we've got a lot of work ahead of us before these people can get freed and really if there's any emergencies in this area they'll have a difficult time getting out. reporting live over richmond hill, shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. lingering problems also persisting for the lirr. most service has resumed tonight but some branches still aren't up and running leaving customers stranded and frustrated. n.j. burkett is at penn station. >> as you know, the lirr promised riders a routine commute today on the railroad's major lines. the trip in to new york city was less than routine and the trip home tonight is shaping up to be less than routine as well. a lot of frustrated commuters inside penn station. this is the scene tonight. riders boarding their trains. others waiting for trains or waiting for their trains to move.

with was waiting for a 4:32 train to find out there would be no 4:32 and the next train would be a that train he was waiting for didn't materialize. let's just say the railroad's initial predictions, the predictions they made late last night were clearly overly ambitious. this morning riders boarded trains that ran two hours later than expected. riders told us most trains didn't begin to roll until some time after 7:00. port washington was not restored until it 2:30 this afternoon. >> last night when we gave the forecast for the morning's commute, we said check later on because we had trouble on some of the lines and we knew there was going to be trouble on some of the lines. >> west hempstead and long

service in to and out of atlantic terminal. the railroad is asking hockey fans, people going to the hockey game at the barclays center tonight to take the trains in to penn station if you're going to be commuting on the lirr, then transfer on the 2 or 3 train to take it to atlantic terminal. n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> if you take the pass, some bad news for the morning commute. they just announced service between penn station and journal square will remain suspended through tuesday morning's rush. more than 30 deaths up and down the east on the weekend blizzard. in our area, a body discovered today in a car in a burger king parking lot in hackensack. the victim, a 78-year-old woman. apparently she parked there because she was too afraid to drive in the snow. new jersey reporter anthony johnson is there with more. >> that parking lot across the

that's where this tragedy was discovered earlier this morning. it appears the victim was last seen alive on saturday. apparently she'd went in to the restaurant to order some food, then came outside and sat in her car while the snowstorm was pounding our area. >> reporter: the victim was discovered slumped over and unresponsive inside a snow covered cadillac around 8:30 this morning. authorities say the 78-year-old woman from medford, new york apparently told work ers inside the burger king that she was afraid to her car. >> it was really snowing hard. i noticed a guy with a truck, he's trying to plow out the lot. i'm saying, this guy is wasting his time trying to plow out the burger king. that's when i noticed the car parked there. >> reporter: the trucks plowing the parking lot put more snow on the vehicle. >> there's normal traffic over there yesterday afternoon so the

noticeable. >> reporter: the car was not running when police arrived. authorities used a charger to restart the battery. the tail pipe was covered with snow, which could lead to carbon monoxide. there was several drug prescription bottles pulled from the vehicle which cops gathered as possible evidence. several cars were still covered with snow today. it's sad to think in this case no one reported the victim as missing. >> we're going about our business, trying to dig our cars out. we have an establishment here. we're trying to get the ambulance out. and it's an unfortunate situation. very unfortunate. but it never crossed my mind to even go look to see if anybody was inside to be honest with you. >> police are saying foul play was not involved in this situation but the name of the victim has not yet been released. that's the latest live from hackensack, anthony johnson, channel 7 eyewitness news.

from carbon monoxide poisoning in passaic and she is still fighting for her life. the thee-year-old is with her mother and brother inside -- 3-year-old is with her mother and brother inside a car saturday night when the father was digging out a snow bank. the tail pipe was cover would snow and ice and carbon monoxide filled the car. sashalynn and her son messiah were killed in a matter of minutes. cleanup mode from flooding. parts of the beach washed away during the high tide over the weekend. a deck collapsed on one home. meanwhile businesses are starting to open their doors as they mop up. state officials including the lieutenant governor are touring the storm damage. among the highest snow totals in new jersey, bernard's township with 30 inches. today the community taking everything in stride. kids of all ages getting a snow day. grabbed the shreds and headed down the hills.

trying to get back to normal. 1500 flights were delayed or canceled today all in the storm's aftermath. more than 13,000 flights have been canceled due to the storm since friday. the blizzard dumped ice and snow on airports from the carolinas to new england. jfk, laguardia, charlotte, newark, philadelphia, baltimore all lost an entire day of flights and in dc, flights were halted for two days. of course all through this storm eyewitness news viewers have been sharing their photos with us. some great pictures. use the hashtag bc7ny when posting on social media and keep those pictures coming. coming up, the concern with the weather tonight, freezing temperatures causing black ice. >> we've got meteorologist lee goldberg in the weather center. >> sunset looks pretty but our streets do not. problems include the reicing of area streets. we may have to look for a storm a little late in the week. clouds, some clearing,

kips bay where the woman is now recovering. >> this 71-year-old victim is expected to be okay. she's been treated here at bellevue hospital for a 4-inch gash to her left cheek. >> i saw a lot of cops in front of by the subway here. i asked what happened. >> reporter: it happened again. an innocent person minding their own business and a total stranger takes a blade to their face. >> i know lower manhattan has slashing but i understand they had the guy. this looks like a new guy. >> reporter: police say a 71-year-old woman was sitting on the southbound number 6 train. monday morning around 7:00, as it approached the bleecker street station in noho, a stranger on the same train got up out of his seat and slashed her across the face. they both got off when the train stopped. the victim asking for help. the

a southbound d train. >> it must concern the safety of the people of the neighborhood. i myself have one guy who robbed a lady here in the lobby and i chased him down. the neighborhood has changed quite a lot. >> reporter: this is the third random stabbing this month. a 24-year-old woman was slashed in chelsea january 6th, and a 30-year-old man saturday before last in the east village. those two suspected now jailed. but the nypd finds themselves trying to track down yet another slasher. >> it's terrible. i don't know what makes them tick, but it's insane. >> this suspect is described as a young man, perhaps between the ages of 18 and 20 years old. he was spotted hopping on the southbound d train around 7:00, 7:30 this morning with red pants and a black shirt. if you have any information about this

the suspect this morning, please call crimestoppers. 1-800-577-tips. darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. the manslaughter trial for new york city police officer peter liang is underway. officer liang fired his gun in to a dark stairwell of a building in brooklyn in 2014, killing akai gurley. opening statements begin today. his attorneys saying he was heading in to dangerous territory in a housing complex and needed to draw his gun. the prosecution arguing he recklessly pulled his gun and did not do enough to help gurley after he was shot. the man accused of attacking and killing a woman with a machete in the bronx is now charged with murder. 26-year-old angel feliz is charged. victim say the victim, carmen torres gonzalez, was

the washington, d.c. area was buried under 2 feet of snow and with no easy place to put all that snow, a lot of us now being halted at rfk stadium. metro service is expected to resume on almost all rail lines tomorrow. federal officers were closed today. no word yet on if they're even going to reopen tomorrow. most school systems in the dc area will remain closed tomorrow as well. this time lapse footage of how fast the blizzard buried the capital area. a man recorded this footage in springfield, virginia. he started recording noon on friday. within 48 hours, everything covered in snow. then everybody digging out of that snow. >> it was the staying power of the storm and being in the sweet spot of it for so many hours. a lot of storms they come, six, eight hours. you're in, you're out. you get a big storm, 6 to 12-inch storm. >> you guided us through, you

entire storm. great job. >> i'd been through the bliz blizzard of --blizzard of '93 upstate. this was only second of that. >> we broke records. >> we really should have gotten the biggest one. outside we go where one thing to remind you of as i look at the cars in the area, saw a lot of cars with big tops on their roofs. clean those rooftops off. can be really dangerous. they're only going to ice over in the coming days. super dangerous for all the cars around you. temperature right now is at 36. south wind nice and light. we're actually at the highest level of the day in the mid and upper 30s. we're above freezing. continuously melting even in to part of the overnight. we hit the average high. it's tough to get in the upper 30s to near 40 with all the new snow pack. we're doing pretty well. there are your sunrise and sunset times. we go in to friday and we've got .4 of

average for the season is 10 inches. then 24 hours later, 27 inches now total for the season and now we're above normal for the season with a long way to go. we go in to the number 2 spot by .1 of an inch, second only to the storm in february 2006. i think this one was worse. we're down to freezing in islip. 28 in monticello, getting very little snow there. and near 34 in montauk. close enough to freezing as we go through the evening hours, icy spots on untreated areas. 34 degrees. partial cloudiness overnight. 32 by morning. tomorrow morning we'll hover in the low and mid 30s. sunshine early. then clouds will thicken during the day and there will be a shower in the afternoon. clearing here then more clouds start to move in. partly cloudy overall. this system, the core of it, even though there's a nice little band of snow there over eastern isle, that's going

we're back with breaking news. a man has just been pulled from the water in east rockaway. we've got newscopter7 and shannon sohn above the scene. what are you seeing from your vantage point? >> the dock you're looking at in the center of the picture is where police are after a man fell. we're going to bring you back to gladys street. you'll see it's still alive with the police department activity here although the man was removed to a local hospital. what he was doing out on the docks at this kind of weather, that remains in question but again, he has already been pulled from the water successfully. reporting live, over east rockaway, shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> that's good to hear because you don't want to be in the water long. it was another dismal day

price of oil driving the direction. dow fell 208 points closing at 15,885. nasdaq lost 72 points and s&p 500 dropped 25 points. new york officials are working on plans to replace the 115-year-old bridges linking the mainland to goat island. to make this happen, crews have to build a temporary structure on the u.s. side of the falls that would redirect niagara river to visitors have mixed views on the plan. >> it's kind of sad that it will be because people won't be able to come and see it and won't be able to see how pretty it is. new stuff will ultimately boost the economy. >> reporter: a public meeting is scheduled but the parks department says there's no funding for the project right now. a young girl falls down a manhole in the middle of a blizzard. tonight that little girl and her mother are describing how she disappeared

hoffer sat down with the mother and daughter. he's here with the story. >> wait till you see the bravery of this little girl. when you hear what she's been through, you wonder if you could have remained as calm. there are bigger questions surrounding the dangerous hole. how long was it there and even after the mishap, why did it take the city two days to fix it? >> your daughter vanished. >> right. that's what i'm saying. i went crazy. i lost my mind. >> reporter: while walking in the snow saturday afternoon, sharon burrell's little girl fell 8 feet in to this opening where the ground had eroded around a manhole at the st. mary's houses in the bronx. >> she's trapped down there screaming help me, mommy, help me. is -- >> reporter: these three young men nearby heard the screams. the tallest one went down the hole head first. >> i told her to stay calm. >> reporter: 6 -year-old kalima

icy water up to her waist, showed a courage beyond her years. >> she had to step up on the pipes and reach up and grab her hand. if it wasn't for her being so strong i don't know what happened. >> what were you thinking when you were down in that hole? >> i thought i wouldn't see my mom ever again. >> reporter: from a walk in the snow with her mom, then in a flash being deep in the ground holding on to a pipe to keep her head above water, kalima never panicked. >> you were brave and you grabbed on to that man's hands, didn't you? >> yes. >> and then what happened? >> then i got out and i gave my mom a hug. >> reporter: this video shows after kalima's dramatic rescue saturday afternoon, maintenance workers placed a trash can over the hole. it was only by around noon today the workers had measured the hole for a wood cover, then a layer of dirt. some residents claim the dirt had been there for a long time. >> how long has that hole been there?

years. >> somebody has to be held accountable for this. my daughter is 6 years old. she could have lost her life. >> incredible little girl. the new york city housing authority is blaming the storm for eroding the soil around the manhole. a spokesperson says they've covered the manhole to prevent further incidents. minutes ago the spokesperson sent us an e-mail saying a contractor is going to install a fence around that manhole as early as tomorrow. >> that's very important to do. police say a drunk driver rear ended in to a snow plow on the new jersey side of the holland tunnel. investigators say jermaine davis tried to run from the scene and wrestled with a port authority officer who tried to stop him. police also say they found a bag of what they suspect is cocaine. davis is facing charges including aggravated assault on a police officer and dwi. a school bus monitor is under arrest for allegedly

bert swain works for the school district. he was caught on surveillance camera last week apparently striking a student. he's charged with endangering the welfare of a child. now to vote 2016. just a week to go until the iowa caucuses and the presidential candidates are making their final push. early polls suggesting the outsider candidates are surging ahead. >> reporter: the battle for iowa. >> they want to be part of a political revolution. >> reporter: caucuses in the hawk eye state in a week. new hampshire is next in two weeks. the candidates including gop frontrunner donald trump are logging a lot of miles between both states. >> it's crunch time, folks. i want to win iowa. >> reporter: in iowa recent polls have trump leading ted cruz. >> 177 hours. that's how long we got till the iowa caucus. >> reporter: and bernie sanders, ahead of hillary clinton. >> i hope to earn your support in the caucus on monday.

we have more breaking news for you. this is going to affect the evening commute. there's a bunch of snow on the grand central parkway, this actually causing serious traffic delays in queens. shannon sohn is live in newscopter7 above this. still lots of snow on the road. >> what happened here, it looks like there was an earlier accident and that accident sent a car up in to the embankment, and september the embankment tumbling down. this is right by little neck parkway but there's so much snow blocking off this right lane that police had to come to block it off. what this is doing to traffic, as you can imagine, it is not pretty. as you get in to little neck parkway, you've got nothing but volume. >> [ groans ] >> exactly. try for the l.i.e. instead. not going to be great but it's going to be better. shannon sohn, channel 7

>> feel for those people in those cars. an intense manhunt widening out west tonight for three jail escapees. they escaped custody at a jail in orange county, california. investigators say the men cut through a metal grate in a holding cell. the relatives are pleading for the men to turn themselves in. >> turn yourselves in. don't let it drag on. i miss you and i want my son back. >> the three fugitives are wanted for a variety of violent offenses including murder and attempted murder. another inmate escape in brazil. this one looks like it is right out of the movie. the prison guard's union says at least 60 inmates were able to escape.

heartbreaking cries from two dogs who were left out in the blizzard in brooklyn. [ barking ] >> those sounds are coming from a home on president street where a woman left her two dogs out in a small enclosure in the yard during the weekend storm. a neighbor posted this video on facebook of the dogs crying. police issued the woman a summons and the dogs are now back inside the home. aspca is working with her to make sure the dogs are properly cared for. we've heard about challenges on the roads and with mass transit but pedestrians face their own difficulties out there after the blizzard. the mounds of snow along the sidewalks and at street corners. it can be a challenge for just about everyone, whether you've got a stroller or backpack or whatever. nina pineda is outside our studios on the upper west side with more on the story. you can't jaywalk much right now, can you? >> the whole street is yours. it just has to be. one bus

36. partly cloudy skies. south wind at 3 miles per hour. a little more balance to the snow depth map across the country. we still can't catch up with the west yet. but certainly big snowfall coming up from the virginias, dc, and in to the tri-state area. you can see the jackpot amounts over new jersey, across new york city and long island. that's how a model sees it. actual totals, you know if you're close to i-80 in new jersey you've got the totals. amazing cut-off to the north. our numbers, we're going to dip down to freezing in new york city for a period tonight and maybe even drop below. numbers actually level off because of patchy cloud cover and more of a south wind. it's not like we're going for a crash freeze in the teens and 20s. there will be icy spots. i think it's more of a problem in the suburbs. look at our number at 8 a.m. 34 degrees in the morning tuesday but in the 20s on our suburbs. sun will yield the clouds, have an umbrella for a passing shower tomorrow afternoon and evening.

tomorrow afternoon. comfortable numbers. the melting will continue all week long. snow depth will go way down by the end of the week. we'll still have snow on the ground. we'll probably take half of the snow pack away by the end of the week. you look in to wednesday, clouds first half of the day. i think skies will try to clear midday and afternoon. lower 40 should be nice. on thursday this is what we're watching. you're going to be hearing about this all week. low pressure is going to be forming on the carolinas. there's a second storm coming out of eastern canada and great lakes. at this point it looks like they stay separate. if there's any type of merger here with these two storms, then we're going to be in for some snowfall, especially along the coastline thursday night in to friday. right now close call, near miss. certainly something to be watched later in the week. a touch of light snow is a possibility friday morning. saturday, a flurry possible in the afternoon. as we go in to sunday, look for partly sunny skies and 44 degrees. as you look at the week as a whole, if we are able to miss out on that thursday night and friday storm,

in that day and how she would have done anything to save her children. >> reporter: it was a routine trip to the gas station that suddenly turned in to a heroic moment for a florida mom. watch as angie fights off two armed men as they allegedly try to steal her car with her children still inside. >> my kids were in the car, i said don't get in the car. he got in anyway. >> reporter: she was traveling to miami with her 1-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son when she stopped to get gas. while at the pump, police say these two men, juan carlos gonzalez and nicholas rosado, tried to car jack her. >> i was just thinking that he's going to take it and the kids are in there. >> reporter: that's when she sprang in to action. on the security video you see a protective mom sprinting around to the driver's side door, diving in to the car after one of the men. she pulls him out of the vehicle and strips off his mask. the two would-be carjackers are then seen running away, allegedly fleeing the scene in a getaway car. >> i didn't even think about the guns.
