that had not yet been plowed but he did not make it here to 75th street and residents have been angry. behind me, a welcome sight. a front loader and a plow right behind it. that doesn't alleviate the feeling of residents in queens that this has been the forsaken borough during the storm. >> the last big storm they had front loaders. we didn't see any of that. >> reporter: andy is pretty fed up. he's in middle village with an unplowed street and patience running low. >> it's the inconvenience. i pay almost $10,000 taxes a year here and you've got a snowstorm and the mayor is saying it's the first storm, we've got plenty of money in the budget. and this is what happens. >> reporter: miles away in elmhurst, a similar scenario. earlier in the day the mayor said 920 plows were working in queens. >> we're sending the equipment where the need is greatest. as manhattan got secured and much of brooklyn got secured, much of the bronx got secured, all the

off of queens to reinforce the queens effort. >> reporter: but by the afternoon only the front load ers were capable of clearing snow from some of the narrower streets. >> we've moved over 170 front end loaders in to queens because some of those streets, a plow is not effective. the snow is too deep and there's not enough room so we're literally going in, dragging it out. >> reporter: it's all too little too late according to councilman eric orick. >> we knew the storm was coming a week ago. this didn't happen overnight. we weren't prepared for the storm. we didn't know the magnitude, how much snow was going to fall, where it was going to fall. there's no excuse. it's inexcusable. >> one man telling me this afternoon that this borough has been ignored. another woman saying it's dangerous if emergency crews can't get in or out of streets that can cause significant problems. you see the front loader. we're waiting

to move the snow out of the way. lauren glassberg, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> of course the fact is we did know until friday night right before 11:00 that this storm would be as big as it was. the call to keep new york city schools open sparking a bit of controversy. sade walks at schools were shoveled. the problem for many of the district's 1.1 million students was getting to school. 74% of students were at their desk today, on from about 91% on a normal monday. the decision to open schools is based on what's best for the majority of students. >> we know for some people they might end up being late. we get that. we know some streets are really tough, but overall there was no question this city could get school off effectively and safely. >> attendance wasn't taken until 11:00 this morning. as for those students who were late, we're told they will not be marked tardy for this. the problems on the lirr,

four branches remain suspended tonight and there are delays on others. n.j. burkett posted this video from one of the trains today. he's at penn station with the latest. >> the trains are running tonight which is more than what we can say for this time last night. penn station is jam packed with commuters that the rail promised something it could not possibly deliver. full service on all the lirr major braunchz. -- major branches. >> reporter: ride rs packed penn station and hoped for the best, that their trip from long island would be better than their trip this morning. >> it was horrible. it took me an hour waiting in kings park for the train and three hours to get in because i go to brooklyn. i'm trying ronkonkoma tonight. >> reporter: the railroad promised full service on the major lines but the morning rush hour was anything but routine.

departed at least two hours later than scheduled. late today service was restored on the port washington line, some 48 hours after the trains stopped running. service remains suspended on the far rockaway. hempstead, west hempstead and long beach branches as well as to and from atlantic terminal. tonight even the major branches of the railroad are experiencing crowded trains and schedule changes. >> it was hectic this morning. they originally said trains were going to be working at 5 a.m. so i got to my station at 5:30 to find out they weren't going to start till 7:00, so had to go back home, head back out, then deal with crowded trains. it was crazy this morning. >> just moments ago we received word from the railroad that there are now temporary delays between penn station and jamaica due to fire department activity along the tracks. to recap, trains are running. some have been canceled. others have been combined with other trains. yes, they are crowded.

biggest development is at the port washington branch now back online as of 2:30 this afternoon, but still four branches of the railroad still are down as well as train traffic in to and out of atlantic terminal in brooklyn. live tonight at penn station, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. we're following breaking news right now. this is coming out of the -- of new jersey where the -- where lucy yang is live with the latest. >> young children made this horrific discovery this afternoon. it was around 3:00. we're told they had just gotten off the school bus. they may have been as young as middle schoolers when they noticed a winter coat peeking out of the snow in their neighbor's driveway. the children doing the right thing went to knock on the woman's door. there was no answer. as they were leaving, officials tell us they went to look closer at the coat and upon

to their horror that the neighbor was still in her coat. she has now been pronounced dead and identified as 64-year-old mary wall from mahwah, new jersey. her family now racing to her home. investigators believe she was out shoveling her driveway on saturday like everyone else. except something happened, she collapsed and was buried in the blizzard. buried until her body was discovered by children this afternoon. we spoke with the sergeant before the hour. >> we located the victim in the snow. she had apparently been there for quite some time. the original callers, children had gotten off the school bus, were walking home. they saw an object partially uncovered in the snow that looked like a jacket. they tried to make contact with the resident to let her know her jacket was in the snow. when they looked further they realized she was in the jacket.

still ongoing but it would appear at this point that she suffered a medical condition while shoveling during the storm and unfortunately it wasn't found until today. >> 64-year-old mary wall has been found buried in the snow in her driveway here on sunnyside road in mahwah, new jersey, her body is still at the scene just behind the county medical examiners vehicle. a shovel was found near her body. lucy yang, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> a medical examiner will now determine the cause of death of another elderly woman. she was found dead in snow-covered car in new jersey. her body was discovered this morning inside a burger king parking lot in hackensack. employees say the 78-year-old woman told them saturday she was going to sit in the car because she didn't want to drive in the blizzard. police have ruled out

was not blocked by snow. hard to blame so many folks in newark tonight complaining impassible. record snow fall and no shortage of pictures from viewers. not plowed. folks say they are the mayor insisting streets will be cleared but once again, no school on tuesday. eyewitness news reporter shirleen allicot in newark with the story. >> to put it plainly, this is a complete and utter nightmare. two days after this storm, newark is seemingly still at a stand still. take a look at where i am right now. the sidewalks have not been shoveled at all. fortunately this particular street has been shoveled but all the other side streets are a mess and a very dangerous situation. >> the city literally forgot about us. >> reporter: this was the scene going down just about any side street you picked here in newark. so many unplowed streets making it impossible to

>> the ambulance is stuck. >> reporter: even an ambulance found itself in that very predicament here on mount vernon and the fire truck backing out wasn't getting far either. >> an ambulance stuck there for like all day. we can't go to work. we call managers and we're losing money and the city of newark doesn't care. >> reporter: the frustration as we navigated the streets was palpable. even we felt it as we tried in vain to get to the home of a woman whose mother is on dialysis. >> her not having her treatment today, now getting sick. >> reporter: the mayor said cars are stuck on side streets making it difficult to remove the snow. he did say people with medical issues are a priority. >> people with dialysis,

we have to make sure ems and fire can get through. >> i want them to get the snow up so my mother can get the dialysis. >> fortunately the mayor's office says linda's mother is on the priority list. in fact, they said they're sending a plow to her street asap. unfortunately her last appointment was at 4 p.m. today so she's going to have to wait till tomorrow to get her treatment. yes, schools are closed tomorrow which is a good thing because as you can see there's still a lot of cleanup to be done. in newark, shirleen allicot, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> political careers sometimes made or broken by snowstorms. you can get the latest information because school closings and delays are just coming in to the eyewitness news room. log on to abc7ny for the latest. wouldn't it be nice to go back to the temperatures a few weeks ago where all the snow would just melt away? >> let's check in with lee. >> here are the post storm problems. basically the idea is

quick update on the breaking commuter news. service on the lirr back to normal now. earlier there were delays for penn station through jamaica in both directions because of fire department activity. a 71-year-old woman riding the subway slashed across the face for no apparent reason. she was on the southbound 6 train as it approached bleecker street this morning. that's when a man sitting across from her got up and slashed the left side of her face. suspect got off the train and on to another. he's still on the loose tonight. the woman is being treated at a hospital.

for new york city police officer who shot an unarmed man and 911 calls, we're hearing for the first time he pulled the trigger. they were released today. officer peter liang firing his gun in a dark stairwell. it killed akai gurley. his attorney saying he was headed in to dangerous territory and needed to pull his gun. prosecution saying he recklessly pulled his gun. for the first time we're hearing the 911 calls for help. >> somebody got shot. >> ma'am you're saying someone was shot on the 5th floor? >> yes, in my apartment my neighbor knocked on my door. she asked me to call the cops. >> the shooting happened in the public housing project of pink houses in brooklyn. liang's bullet hit a wall then hit gurley and that's what killed him. a medical puzzle tonight in

more than two dozen people hospitalized, exposed to something that made them sick. >> residents of a homeless shelter stick with a gastrointestinal ailment. >> the faulty furnace had been repaired, so what happened? >> toni yates with more. >> of course when emergency responders get a call for co poisoning they're out the door and at the location as soon as possible and especially when it's a location that had this problem before. this is at the catholic charities shelter for women and children. on saturday the co alarms went off. firefighters and oem responded and found high levels of c0 in the building. the fire department says catholic charities had the furnace repaired. after that, the building was tested. it was all

families were eventually allowed to go back, but apparently by today some people started feeling nauseous, light headed, started having the gastrointestinal problems. another emergency 911 call was made. the personnel went out there again. they took the women and children to three area hospitals to be tested. the shelter tested all day long negative for c0. they're waiting for blood work result but they believe the illnesses could be remnants of c0 exposure on saturday that those people are just beginning to feel the symptoms. >> you could be light headed, dizzy, it's poisonous gas. it's odorless. and they measure it in parts per million and they had a really high amount, like 800 to 1,000. it accumulates in the hemoglobin in the body in the blood. to be cautious they took them to area hospitals

really have to worry about reicing tonight and tomorrow morning. >> really it's all week long we have to worry about this. the post storm problems going to last a while. my producer asked me to go a little shorter so weather is getting cut already. manhattan, partly cloudy sky. temperature at 35 degrees. south wind at 3 and the high today, 38 degrees, which is actually right on target. that's pretty impressive with all this snow pack for our temperatures to reach their normals. through friday not even a half inch of snowfall in new york city when the average

then and in 24 hours, now above average. 27 inches for the season. 26, 8 for the storm. only a 10th below the top spot of the biggest snowstorm ever in new york city. 27 in stanhope and randolph. with the big snow pack the numbers tend to go down. we do have cloud cover to try to keep temperatures up but we're going to have icing especially in the suburbs tonight. sunniest part of the day tomorrow will be early. we'll get above freezing even above 40. there could be a rain shower. we'll have several hours of clear sky then the clouds will start to roll in again. mostly high clouds from the west. there's a low right here. decent area of snow from wisconsin in to iowa but that low is headed to our north and west. going to drag a front through but it's milder and a few rain showers in the afternoon. we'll have sun early, clouds gather. there's a couple spotty showers in the afternoon. first part of tomorrow night. then the threat would be over and we'll start clearing out. partly cloudy, patchy fog, icy roads tonight. down to 31 or 32 in new york

colder in the suburbs. 42 tomorrow. clouding up. a few afternoon rain showers and that threat would last in to the first part of tomorrow night. 7-day accuweather forecast, one thing to look out for on thursday, a storm to the west. we are snuggled in between. hopefully the storms remain separate. that's our forecast right now with a close call but a near miss. something to be watched. there's a chance of light snow early friday morning then we'll break the clouds up over the weekend. 40s by sunday. even if we get that storm, the whole week is above average in terms of temperatures so we'd be melting and

conference title games yesterday. the broncos won the afc crown, beat the patriots 20-18. peyton manning set to make his super bowl return. he's a quarterback for the ages but it's denver's defense that won the game yesterday. tom brady sacked, hit 14 times. game came down to the final play. broncos win. manning moves on to the super bowl. he'll meet cam newton and the panthers who ran over the cardinals in the nfc game, 49-15. newton ran for two scores, threw for two scores. it's the panthers and broncos in super bowl 50 and now -- >> the lion always eats until he's satisfied. then he sleeps. we can't be satisfied. we just can't. we've got to keep working. >> we'll go right to work. we're not kneg to -- we're not going to wait on anything. the preparation, how we do things as coaches and stuff, we're going to stay committed to our routine. this is shaping up to be a big week for the mets. mike

saturday, july 30th. a shirt giveaway friday. the on-field ceremony saturday. piazza bobble head giveaway sunday the 31st. on july 24th, piazza receives baseball's ultimate honor. that would be inshrinement in the hall of fame. local nba schedules pick up tomorrow night. nets and knicks at home. today they got practice at the complex. lost two straight. dropped two games under the .500 mark. seven of their next nine are at home and that should help. carmelo anthony a little sore. played a lot of minutes last week. >> i'll get through this phase for sure. this is nothing i'm worried about. even the coaches and the staff, not too concerned about that. >> we're hoping that we can kind of just get through this next couple of days. hopefully he can play tomorrow night and get out of the woods on this. we're ready if the singles quarterfinals at the australian open.
