faces charges in connection with that slashing monday morning in manhattan. first he has to answer to a judge in brooklyn stemming from trespassing charges and resisting arrest charges when police picked him up at his girlfriend grandmother's house. >> he is a good guy in general. i know him to have completed school, working. i don't know -- i would never expect it. >> reporter: with a clean cut and scarless face, damon knowles is escorted out of a precinct. he is charged with leaving a 4- inch gash on carmen ramiro's face. >> i hope god forgives him and he should repent. >> reporter: police say it was his distinctive red sweat pants that lead his girl friend's grandmother to recognize him and turn him in. >> i would never expect something like this with him, never. >> how did you hear about what happened to him?

>> reporter: around the same time as knowles arrest there were two other random slashings in new york city. a 32-year-old man was slashed in the face at the 116th street station in east harlem and the nypd released these pictures of a man wanted for slashing a woman on the hand on the number 3 train in brooklyn. >> they made an arrest in the case of a slasher last night. that is an important development. they are developing the efforts in the subways and redoubling efforts in areas where mta p.d. patrols as well. this we take seriously but very happy and relieved to report an arrest. >> reporter: now, there have been 11 other random slashings in new york city since october. as a matter of routine, the nypd will see if knowles is connected to any of the other incidents. darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, darla. new at noon, a raccoon

he is being tested for rabies. he was walking to school when the animal took him by surprise. it happened in elmwood park before 9:00 this morning. concern. the raccoon ran up behind, jumped on the boy and latched on his face. he suffered deep facial lacerations including one by his right eye. a neighbor went out and attacked the raccoon until it died. the raccoon and the young boy are being tested for rabies. a worker seriously injured after falling from a construction site in manhattan. the worker fell down an elevator charlotte inside a building under construction on west 17th in chelsea. he fell from the 5th floor and may have landed on a piece of rubber. he was -- rebar. he was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

an arrest in a deadly shooting on long island. 35-year-old jowel durass is charged with second-degree murder. police officers found a 37-year- old monday night in uniondale with multiple gunshot wounds. he was pronounced dead at the scene. now to the blizzard cleanup and four days after the storm the city of newark is finally starting to return to normal. kids are back in school for the first time, but the cleanup isn't over yet. here is eyewitness news reporter mallory hoff. >> reporter: progress has been made clearing streets in newark according to city officials but residents say not enough. >> it's terrible out here. >> it took me an hour. i haven't made it to work yet. >> reporter: has it got better? >> no. >> reporter: traffic was bumper to bumper this morning as new jersey's largest school district went back to class. >> i'm feeling very disappointed in the city. i'm aggravated. i have been stuck in this

the lawsuits claim a poorly designed crossing in valhalla contributed to the accident along with an engineer that wade too long to apply the brakes. westchester county and mount pleasant are named as defendants in the 2015 deaths. the s.u.v. driver and five passengers died in the crash. meanwhile, a new theory from investigators on what caused the dead liam track crash in philadelphia. officials thing the amtrak engineer driving the train might have been distracted by radio chatter. a full ntsb report on the crash will be released next monday. it is expected to dismiss rumors the train's engineer was using a cell phone. last may's crash killed 8 people and injured more than 200 others. a federal lawsuit would require flint replace all the lead pipes. the suit says that will ensure residents have a safe drinking system. a complaint says the replacement should happen at no

it asks for an order to require the city and state officials correct violations of the safe water drinking act. the entire city of flint has been asked to drink bottled water. new video of a fire in downtown new orleans that has been burning for hours. firefighters first responded to the mostly empty building about 3:00 in the morning. by mid-morning they were still spraying water on the fire and a neighboring building but believe. a father acquitted by judge after he was arrested for taking his 12-year-old daughter's cell phone. they originally said it was theft. a judge found the man not guilty yesterday citing insufficient evidence. the 36-year-old father said he took his daughter's phone over an inappropriate text. sounds like there is a family dispute in this because the girl's mother says she owns the cell phone and reported it stolen. the man won in court and he got

damon knowles was arrested after his girlfriend's grandmother turned him into police. the victim talked to us yesterday afternoon she -- after she was slashed in the face. we got video from the scene of a raccoon attack. police say a 6-year-old boy was walking to school when the animal jumped on him. with a pipe. the boy is being tested for rabies. new york schools are back to normal after the blizzard. the cleanup isn't over yet. screws are trying to plow -- crews are trying to plow streets in the city. we begin with a possible case of animal cruelty in the bronx. the owner of nearly a dozen dogs are accused of leaving them out in the blizzard. the homeowner was taken into custody on separate charges. this happened in the morrisania section of the bronx. that is where kemberly richardson is live.

the first time police have come to 1226 tinton avenue. neighbors complained about the way the dogs were kept. but not only today did officers come here but they removed the pit bulls. these are some of the animals. this house. four pit bulls kept in the back. sources tell eyewitness news hines. they are surprisingly timid but had thick colors around their neck and heavy chains secured to the fence in the yard. each animal had a makeshift doghouse, no heater or insulation. officers came first on a warrant for drugs. hines was taken into custody and the aspca is looking into additional charges of animal cruelty. a total of 10 pit bulls were taken away, 9 females and one male. officials believe the dogs were used for breeding. they were living in their own

on camera. >> i seen him walk the dogs, playful with them. so, i seen him buying bags of food for the dogs as well. that. i never thought that many dogs. the situation wasle withly as deplorable inside the home. that's where several crates were found, more chains and the smell of urine and feces. it was unbearable. officers believe that's where the owner was living. several of the rooms may have been rented out. back live, sources tell eyewitness news hines was arrested in march for not feeding some of these dogs, that they were undernourished. some had open wounds on their tail and scabs on the back and on their paw area. surprisingly the dogs were friendly. we were able to go up to them. they crouched down and officials say that is a sure sign the dogs were probably beaten.

good the jetsd filed a class- action lawsuit by the cheerleaders. they agreed to pay more than $320,000. the 52 women say they were paid $150 a game and issued uniforms but not paid for practices and other work and were forced to pay for their own makeup, hair care and transportation. the team denied the claims but agreed to settle to avoid the expense and distraction of litigation. six cleveland police officers were fired in connection with a 2012 car chase that ended with officers firing 137 bullets at a car killing two suspects. the chase involved 62 police cars and 105 officers. in addition to the six officers fired, another six were suspended without pay. the fired officers include a man that fired 15 shots through the windshield standing on the hood of the suspect car. he was acquitted last year of manslaughter and assault.

remembering a long-time principal killed as she pushed children out of the path of a school bus. classes are canceled today in lawrence township following the death of susan jordan. investigators say a school bus went on to a curb yesterday as students prepared to go home. she managed to push all of them to safety before she was hit. >> we will work closely with the authorities. we want to make it clear that it was an accident. and we just ask that everyone in this community and beyond please pray for our students and our great leader. >> the two children were hit but are expected to be okay. no charges have been filed against the bus driver. jordan was principal for 22 years. u.s. customs arrested a man they say tried smuggling live birds in his pants. oh, yeah. agents took the man into custody earlier this month in miami after he arrived on a
