a person that they believe is a very dangerous man. his name is tyquan long, 29 years old. he is armed and he is dangerous. in far rockaway, shirleen allicot, channel 7 eyewitness news. an incredible act of bravery. a man jumped in to action, saving a 6-year-old boy as that child was being mauled by a crazed raccoon. the child tonight has severe wounds to his face. this attack happened as he and his mom were on their way to school this morning in elmwood park. new jersey reporter anthony johnson with more on what happened and the good samaritan who came to the rescue. >> that little boy was walking with his mother up the sidewalk heading up to the 16th avenue school this morning. this attack was completely a surprise. it was totally unprovoked. the wild animal, the raccoon, ran across the street and jumped on boy. >> there's a woman screaming

>> reporter: witnesses heard terrifying screams and called police. a 6-year-old boy walking with his mom near this mailbox was chased and attacked by a raccoon. one man jumped in to action. >> when i kind of drove up maybe about 5 or 6 feet away from her, i seen this huge raccoon on top could see his red jacket. >> reporter: danny walls used a painter's pole to knock down the animal which had viciously attacked the child. >> i seen there was a little bit of space between him and the kid but i could see the raccoon biting the kid's face. >> reporter: danny noticed commotion outside and thought a man was attacking a woman. when she came outside, she realized the raccoon. >> then he said after it got off of him, he kept hitting it because he didn't want it to get back up and try to attack

>> little kid got attacked by a raccoon. >> reporter: shannon lambert made that 911 call after seeing the disturbing attack. >> the boy was bleeding. it looked like it bit his eye and the side of his face. i just called the police. >> reporter: the animal was taken to be tested for rabies. >> animal control took custody of the animal. they're going to be doing rabies tests on it and we should have results hopefully by friday. >> the 6-year-old boy was taken to hackensack university medical as far as any word about the animal is concerned, they said once again they'll have to wait till friday to find out if that animal did meanwhile officials are sending out notifications to parents that take their children to school here on 16th avenue. that's the latest live from elmwood park, anthony johnson, channel 7 eyewitness news. a big break tonight in the

owner on long island. 35-year-old joel ayala duras is charged with second degree murder. officers found melendez monday night in union dale with multiple gunshot wounds. he died at the scene. melendez was an immigrant from el salvador and owned a local construction company. a tip leads investigators to a man wanted in the slashing of a woman on the subway and now he's under arrest. this is surveillance video that appeared on our news. the grandmother of the suspect's girlfriend says it was the red sweatpants that got her attention. eyewitness reporter darla miles is at the courthouse in lower manhattan. >> 21-year-old damon police say did not have a criminal record before this incident. just a few minutes ago he went before a judge in brooklyn. those are charges stemming from his arrest from his girlfriend's grandmother's home. they say he faced trespassing, domestic violence,

now that that case has been wrapped up, he's going to make his way here to lower manhattan on that slashing case. >> they made a full statement to him that he was the one who cut the lady on the train. he was placed under arrest for assault and also resisting arrest. >> reporter: it's slasher arrest number 3. police say 21-year-old damon knowles wasn't copying the other two slashing suspects arrested this month. he has a set of his own issues. >> we spoke to family members and they all say he started doing drugs lately and it's changed his entire behavior toward everybody. >> reporter: the red sweatpants in this surveillance video, a dead giveaway for knowles' girlfriend's grandmother who turned him in for slashing 71-year-old carmen riviera on the d train monday morning. >> how we apprehended him, he was involved in a family dispute with his girlfriend. she has a child in common in brownsville, brooklyn. officers went to the scene to immediate the dispute. he became event at that point

>> reporter: there have been three random slashings this month, 11 since october. >> i don't know if they're copy cat or not. each seems to have their own motivation. slashings. investigator say an incident in brooklyn where a 29-year-old woman was slashed in the hand was actually part of a dispute. they are digging in to the slashing of a 32-year-old tuesday evening. >> we don't have a lot of information right now. we're trying to get a story from him. >> let me just bring you up to speed on just what happened. in a brooklyn courtroom with 21-year-old damon knowles, those trespassing and domestic violence charges were both thrown out but police say he did attack another prisoner while he was in custody. he still faces those charges and a $1,000 bail in that case and now he's expected to be transferred here to lower manhattan to be arraigned in the slashing incident.

7 eyewitness news. a helicopter made a crash landing on long island and the only thing impacted on the ground was the top of a street sign. the helicopter came down at an intersection in lindenhurst. the pilot was able to miss every wire, every car, and every house. investigators say the pilot and student were returning to a public airport helicopter lost power. >> if that's a student, he's got to stick with this instructor over here because never touched one wire. a local rez -- resident shot this video when he arrived at the scene. everybody very calm. the pilot and student walked away with minor injuries. they actually refused to go to the hospital. new republic schools opened the blizzard. students had to pass huge snow piles as they made their way to class. drivers found their normal banks. >> terrible out here.

we've got new details on the zika virus in our area. health officials say five cases have now been confirmed in new york state. two are in new york city. one is in queens. there's also a case each in nassau and orange counties. one case has been confirmed in monroe county upstate. all of these cases here in this country involve people who traveled to a country where the mosquito-borne

locally doctors are seeing an uptick in patients who have returned from one of the infected areas. >> there is no vaccine and no medicine to treat zika. health officials urge pregnant women to postpone their travel to the many infected areas because an infection could lead to brain damage for their unborn child. >> reporter: jessica murphy, 18 weeks pregnant with baby number two, enjoyed a week-long family vacation in puerto rico this month, knowing full well there was one case of zika virus on the island. >> i was there and took precautions. wore mosquito repellent clothing, eucalyptus like it was a perfume. >> reporter: those precautions paid off. two weeks since her return to new york and the 38-year-old has suffered none of

reporter lauren glassberg. >> thought it would be safe to walk across the river because it was going to take too long to walk all the way around. >> reporter: it was a shortcut that almost cost chantell wilson their lives. the 16-year-olds tried to make it across. >> i fell in first, cold, terrified. like oh, my god. >> reporter: shy em doesn't know how to swim. >> when we first fell in, i thought i can make it. then i saw he started to get numb. he obviously couldn't move. >> reporter: a man threw out a hose line but it didn't reach. he went to get help at a local fire station. >> we had a conversation. we prayed then we talked. >> reporter: firefighters approached from one side of the river but the boys were closer to the other side and extra help was called in. >> hypothermia was setting in. they were probably in for 20 to 25 minutes at that point. which if you're in icy water that's pretty long.

we continue to follow breaking news in queens. a manhunt is underway for this man, tyquan long. he's accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend in an apartment in far rockaway. police say he shot another woman who confronted him. he's accused of making threats to other people. 10 dogs found in deplorable conditions rescued today in the bronx. >> their owner is accused of leaving them outside during the blizzard. this isn't the first time the owner has been in trouble for neglecting his animals. why weren't the dogs taken away sooner? >> eyewitness news reporter kemberly richardson is in the morrisania section with details. >> just minutes ago james hines walked out of his precinct in handcuffs surrounded by several nypd officers. he was nonsensible. he was yelling out the federal reserve. he told me police planted the drugs that

>> i've seen the ones in the backyard. i've seen them out there feeding them during the summertime. they wasn't being mistreated from what i saw. >> reporter: authorities saw it differently. we watched as the aspca carried out the animals, all shaking as they were removed. also inside his apartment police found 30 bags of crack cocaine and 20 vials of heroin. as for the dogs, one neighbor who didn't want to go on camera, told me he was glad authorities took the dogs, adding now hines can no longer, quote, beat and slam them around. back in march hines was also arrested. his dogs were malnourished, had open wounds and scabs on their backs. hall livers in the neighborhood and believes hines does care for his pets but couldn't handle all of the pitts. >> i see him around here walking the dogs but they don't like the fact that he has a lot of dogs and the way he's living.

>> ago james hines transferred from here. i asked him about his dogs. he told me they were all beautiful and well fed. i also did ask the aspca if these were the same dogs that were taken away from him in march, why were they given back? i didn't receive an answer back. cruelty charges. kemberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness news. two more victims of a house explosion last december in elizabeth have died. 11-year-old tyquan henderson died at the hospital yesterday. the death toll from the blast now stands at four. elizabeth's mayor said the ground floor of the three-story home had been illegally converted into an apartment and the explosion was caused by gas. 16 people lived in the home. meanwhile a show of support from new york city to philadelphia for a police officer who was ambushed on the job. take a look at this photo. nypd officers traveled

>> it's floral in the eyewitness news studio. outside we go. there's our studios on the upper west side. see there's a sheen on the streets. just wet now but it icing later. our backyard is central park. 42 degrees right now. look what's gone on in central park since getting nearly 27 inches of snow. over the past few days the melting has really accelerated and now down to 9-inch snow depth in central park. you might be saying near your house. i got a tweet from queens, saying wait, we're definitely doing melting over the next several days in to the upcoming weekend. numbers will go below freezing in new york city. the five boroughs are not representative of much of the we're concerned about some icy roads. increasing roads tomorrow, light, winds around 40. decent day. we have a couple patchy clouds that are falling apart right now. then we're watching a couple storms. we've been looking at this in the weather map.

have a clipper system up here, a storm coming out of the golf. we hoped they wouldn't phase in to a big coastal storm. looks like they're going to remain independent with this storm going offshore. we may be on the western fringe of some of its clouds. it's this clipper that will come through on friday. worst case there are a couple brief squalls that go across the northern suburbs and leave a quick dusting or coating. we'll watch out for that. i updated lows tonight. our computer mod els i don't think were handling it that well. we could see mid teens, like 15 monticello, sussex, poughkeepsie. 20, white plains. 29, i slip. well below freezing. up to 40 during the afternoon in many spots with sun giving way to clouds. on the 7-day accuweather forecast on friday, after that threat of a snow shower through let's say lunchtime, these yellows and reds can be 35-mile-per-hour gusts. it's very blustery on friday afternoon and then the chill starts to leave over the weekend.

the car the carbon monoxide climbed to a dangerous level. and at the same time, the oxygen level dropped. >> the meter that went offs -- went off was set to go off when the oxygen level goes down below 19%. >> reporter: i reached out also to the national carbon monoxide experts online at carbonmonoxidemyths.com. they said what we created at the fire department was a, quote, death chamber, and within 15 to 20 minutes carbon monoxide poisoning can killane car like that. they say time and space changed everything and that's why the home alarm did not sound. >> if you can take a couple extra steps to clear around your car before you start it up, you may end up saving your family's life or your own life. >> so scary to see what we saw today. make sure when you see as much snow as we've seen this year in a couple days, always dig out around the tail pipe before you turn it on to warm up the car.
