a person that they believe is a very dangerous man. his name is tyquan long, 29 years old. he is armed and he is dangerous. in far rockaway, shirleen allicot, channel 7 eyewitness news. an incredible act of bravery. a man jumped in to action, saving a 6-year-old boy as that child was being mauled by a crazed raccoon. the child tonight has severe wounds to his face. this attack happened as he and his mom were on their way to school this morning in elmwood park. new jersey reporter anthony johnson with more on what happened and the good samaritan who came to the rescue. >> that little boy was walking with his mother up the sidewalk heading up to the 16th avenue school this morning. this attack was completely a surprise. it was totally unprovoked. the wild animal, the raccoon, ran across the street and jumped on boy. >> there's a woman screaming

>> reporter: witnesses heard terrifying screams and called police. a 6-year-old boy walking with his mom near this mailbox was chased and attacked by a raccoon. one man jumped in to action. >> when i kind of drove up maybe about 5 or 6 feet away from her, i seen this huge raccoon on top could see his red jacket. >> reporter: danny walls used a painter's pole to knock down the animal which had viciously attacked the child. >> i seen there was a little bit of space between him and the kid but i could see the raccoon biting the kid's face. >> reporter: danny noticed commotion outside and thought a man was attacking a woman. when she came outside, she realized the raccoon. >> then he said after it got off of him, he kept hitting it because he didn't want it to get back up and try to attack

>> little kid got attacked by a raccoon. >> reporter: shannon lambert made that 911 call after seeing the disturbing attack. >> the boy was bleeding. it looked like it bit his eye and the side of his face. i just called the police. >> reporter: the animal was taken to be tested for rabies. >> animal control took custody of the animal. they're going to be doing rabies tests on it and we should have results hopefully by friday. >> the 6-year-old boy was taken to hackensack university medical as far as any word about the animal is concerned, they said once again they'll have to wait till friday to find out if that animal did meanwhile officials are sending out notifications to parents that take their children to school here on 16th avenue. that's the latest live from elmwood park, anthony johnson, channel 7 eyewitness news. a big break tonight in the

owner on long island. 35-year-old joel ayala duras is charged with second degree murder. officers found melendez monday night in union dale with multiple gunshot wounds. he died at the scene. melendez was an immigrant from el salvador and owned a local construction company. a tip leads investigators to a man wanted in the slashing of a woman on the subway and now he's under arrest. this is surveillance video that appeared on our news. the grandmother of the suspect's girlfriend says it was the red sweatpants that got her attention. eyewitness reporter darla miles is at the courthouse in lower manhattan. >> 21-year-old damon police say did not have a criminal record before this incident. just a few minutes ago he went before a judge in brooklyn. those are charges stemming from his arrest from his girlfriend's grandmother's home. they say he faced trespassing, domestic violence,

now that that case has been wrapped up, he's going to make his way here to lower manhattan on that slashing case. >> they made a full statement to him that he was the one who cut the lady on the train. he was placed under arrest for assault and also resisting arrest. >> reporter: it's slasher arrest number 3. police say 21-year-old damon knowles wasn't copying the other two slashing suspects arrested this month. he has a set of his own issues. >> we spoke to family members and they all say he started doing drugs lately and it's changed his entire behavior toward everybody. >> reporter: the red sweatpants in this surveillance video, a dead giveaway for knowles' girlfriend's grandmother who turned him in for slashing 71-year-old carmen riviera on the d train monday morning. >> how we apprehended him, he was involved in a family dispute with his girlfriend. she has a child in common in brownsville, brooklyn. officers went to the scene to immediate the dispute. he became event at that point

>> reporter: there have been three random slashings this month, 11 since october. >> i don't know if they're copy cat or not. each seems to have their own motivation. slashings. investigator say an incident in brooklyn where a 29-year-old woman was slashed in the hand was actually part of a dispute. they are digging in to the slashing of a 32-year-old tuesday evening. >> we don't have a lot of information right now. we're trying to get a story from him. >> let me just bring you up to speed on just what happened. in a brooklyn courtroom with 21-year-old damon knowles, those trespassing and domestic violence charges were both thrown out but police say he did attack another prisoner while he was in custody. he still faces those charges and a $1,000 bail in that case and now he's expected to be transferred here to lower manhattan to be arraigned in the slashing incident.

7 eyewitness news. a helicopter made a crash landing on long island and the only thing impacted on the ground was the top of a street sign. the helicopter came down at an intersection in lindenhurst. the pilot was able to miss every wire, every car, and every house. investigators say the pilot and student were returning to a public airport helicopter lost power. >> if that's a student, he's got to stick with this instructor over here because never touched one wire. a local rez -- resident shot this video when he arrived at the scene. everybody very calm. the pilot and student walked away with minor injuries. they actually refused to go to the hospital. new republic schools opened the blizzard. students had to pass huge snow piles as they made their way to class. drivers found their normal banks. >> terrible out here.

>> this is an hour and a half. there's no reason why we can't get through traffic. >> frustrated indeed. the state department of transportation was called in to help with snow removal. at peak times there were as many as 200 crews on the job. politics now. is it a good move or a bad one? gop candidate donald trump playing yet another wildcard when he announced he won't be on the debate stage this thursday. the question now, how is it going to play out days before the iowa caucuses? dave evans is here with more. >> it's certainly a risky move but it may prove to be a smart move by donald trump by not debating. trump likely freezes this race. right now he's in the lead. a lot of voters may tune out if he's not on the stage tonight. this morning on good morning america trump hinted he could change his mind, but as it stands right now, he's out. >> reporter: with only a few days before voting begins, donald trump pulls another stunner. he won't participate

>> i'm going to have something else in iowa. we'll do something where we raise money for the veterans and wounded warriors. >> reporter: his reason, fox anchor megyn kelly. trump expressing on social media he really dislikes it. >> megyn kelly is really biased against me. everybody knows that. do you really think she can be fair at a debate? >> reporter: this latest dustup has ted cruz accusing the billionaire of being scared. cruz is trump's biggest rival in iowa. >> apparently megyn kelly is really, really scary. donald is a fragile soul. >> reporter: fox news responded tongue-in-cheek that we learned from a secret back channel that the itolla and tend to treat trump unfairly. >> let them have their debate. let's see what they have with the ratings.

most republicans think trump will be the party nominee. barber urged the party, please rally behind anybody not named trump or cruz. today on good morning america trump responded. >> the fact is whether they like it or not i'm in first place by a lot. cruz is in second place and a lot of that is because people are fed up with the old time politicians like haley barbour that haven't done anything. >> tonight ted cruz will hold a big rally in iowa with a lot of evangelical voters. they'll likely make or break a campaign in iowa which is a lot more conservative. trump now calls himself pro life. he's been campaigning in iowa with conservative evangelical pastors. foreign policy and the economy. those items topping the list of topics that were discussed between president obama and democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders. the two met at the white house today. sanders said they discussed a little bit of politics.

endorsed a candidate for president. though recent comments have many believing that the president will throw his support behind his former secretary of state, hillary >> there was some the other day about a political interview where he was tipping the scale to secretary clinton. i think he and the vice president have tried to be fair and even handed. >> sanders' big rival, hillary clinton, also talking about the president, and she aligned herself with his policies while addressing a crowd at an iowa bowling alley. what one mother to be did on vacation while in a protected zone to protect herself and what doctors here are noticing now. >> 10 dogs in the bronx left outside during the blizzard. they've been rescued and their owner faces charges tonight but not because of the dogs. >> after several car deaths from carbon monoxide during the blizzard, look how the gas can kill in a matter of minutes.

we've got new details on the zika virus in our area. health officials say five cases have now been confirmed in new york state. two are in new york city. one is in queens. there's also a case each in nassau and orange counties. one case has been confirmed in monroe county upstate. all of these cases here in this country involve people who traveled to a country where the mosquito-borne

locally doctors are seeing an uptick in patients who have returned from one of the infected areas. >> there is no vaccine and no medicine to treat zika. health officials urge pregnant women to postpone their travel to the many infected areas because an infection could lead to brain damage for their unborn child. >> reporter: jessica murphy, 18 weeks pregnant with baby number two, enjoyed a week-long family vacation in puerto rico this month, knowing full well there was one case of zika virus on the island. >> i was there and took precautions. wore mosquito repellent clothing, eucalyptus like it was a perfume. >> reporter: those precautions paid off. two weeks since her return to new york and the 38-year-old has suffered none of

which include fever, rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis. much has changed with the caribbean getaway. the cdc says zika has spread to 24 countries and territories. >> getting at least five phone calls a day, even patient whose are travelling to florida because there were three cases of zika virus in florida. >> dr. stone and the cdc now suggest pregnant women postpone travel to any of the affected areas. >> the big concern here is that it appears that women who get this infection when they're pregnant, it increases the risk that their baby will be born with a severe form of brain damage. >> those patients that have traveled and come back, if they have symptoms, they need to get tested. there are certain tests that can diagnose zika virus. >> when jessica murphy went to puerto rico, there was one case of zika on the island. today there are 19. and while only one in five people infected with

exposure to the virus is not a risk an expectant mother wants to take. on abc7ny we have a list of all those countries where the cdc recommends pregnant women do not travel. federal law enforcement officers have surrounded a nature preserve in oregon tonight, a reserve occupied by armed antigovernment militants. this move comes a day after one occupier. since then there have been increasing calls for authorities to take action and make arrests. stocks on wall street tumbling today after the federal reserve said it's reconsidering six weeks ago the fed raised rates from record lows saying it felt the economy had stabilized to handle it. now with more uncertain international picture the fed may raise rates further. the dow fell 225 points closing at 15,944. nasdaq dropped 99 points.

as wall street closes, our nation's capital reopens. things are moving once again in washington, d.c. as the city continues to dig out from under more than two feet of snow. today students returned to school while all federal buildings also reopened. >> i didn't know if it was branched coming through or blades of grass coming through. i'll check the >> we've had melting here too. >> 9 inches on the ground in central park. when you talk about on your front lawn, this could really be melting fast. outside we go. we have what is a fairly mild for late january. really pretty sunset which is 5:07. our temperatures at 42. one thing with the dry air and breeze, felt like 30. you need the coat in to the evening hours and the through the night. it's a clear

temperatures will be in free fall later. average high, 39. sunset at 5:07. last year in the state we were finishing up the snowstorm and 30 degrees. our wind gusts still are from 15 to 25 in a few places. these will die down quickly during the vnsh hours -- during the evening hours. 41 in clifton. these numbers could be in the teens and low 20s by morning. so be aware of that tomorrow morning for ice patches on area roads with the melting and refreezing. 41 in poughkeepsie. 41 in belmar. wind chills are generally in the 30s. that's the feels-like readings for the evening hours. something i typically don't show you during the winter is dew points. i show you this because it's a measure of the amount of moisture in the air. it's a good guide when you have clear skies, light winds and snow pack, your forecast lows not near new york city necessarily but in the suburbs will go close to some of the dew points. you're talking about teens and 20s in many spots later on tonight. that's why i think there will be a hard freeze in many spots.

skies. tomorrow morning mostly sunny. much colder in the suburbs. clouds will increase through the day. winds remain light in the dry daylight hours. a few patchy clouds are withering away north and west. there's a reinforcing cold front. as this high moves closer, the winds are much lighter than they are overhead right now. then we look at these two systems, one over the lakes and one brewing in the gulf of mexico. there's been a conveyer belt going over florida. the key is we want them to stay independent so we don't get a huge storm along the east coast and it looks like that is the message. this one is going pretty safely offshore although we're on the western flank of some of it. high clouds tomorrow afternoon. we're going to pay a little bit more attention to this one, sends this one out to sea, and we get some snow showers late thursday night, predawn hours friday through friday midday and a couple of these snow showers could be gusty. maybe a little squall north of new york city

new at 5:00, they really thought they were going to die. two very grateful teenagers talking tonight about being rescued from the icy passaic river. they fell through the ice in patterson and after believing this was it for them, firefighters arrived to save them.

reporter lauren glassberg. >> thought it would be safe to walk across the river because it was going to take too long to walk all the way around. >> reporter: it was a shortcut that almost cost chantell wilson their lives. the 16-year-olds tried to make it across. >> i fell in first, cold, terrified. like oh, my god. >> reporter: shy em doesn't know how to swim. >> when we first fell in, i thought i can make it. then i saw he started to get numb. he obviously couldn't move. >> reporter: a man threw out a hose line but it didn't reach. he went to get help at a local fire station. >> we had a conversation. we prayed then we talked. >> reporter: firefighters approached from one side of the river but the boys were closer to the other side and extra help was called in. >> hypothermia was setting in. they were probably in for 20 to 25 minutes at that point. which if you're in icy water that's pretty long.

to the ice with a colleague and they too went through the ice to the boys. >> one arm on the throw ring, we started pulling them in. >> i told them i didn't want to die. after that i closed my eyes and went to sleep. when i woke up i was in the hospital. learned. >> real good kids. they were they learned from it. >> grateful for them being there, coming when they did. and just risking their life to save ours. >> grateful indeed. the deputy fire chief says he hopes others will stay off the ice after hearing their story. the only injury, shyim has a scratched eye but they are alive. >> love their gratitude. new

we continue to follow breaking news in queens. a manhunt is underway for this man, tyquan long. he's accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend in an apartment in far rockaway. police say he shot another woman who confronted him. he's accused of making threats to other people. 10 dogs found in deplorable conditions rescued today in the bronx. >> their owner is accused of leaving them outside during the blizzard. this isn't the first time the owner has been in trouble for neglecting his animals. why weren't the dogs taken away sooner? >> eyewitness news reporter kemberly richardson is in the morrisania section with details. >> just minutes ago james hines walked out of his precinct in handcuffs surrounded by several nypd officers. he was nonsensible. he was yelling out the federal reserve. he told me police planted the drugs that

apartment and when i asked him about his dogs, if he beat them, he told me he didn't, that they were beautiful and that they were well fed. he's now facing narcotics and animal cruelty charges. >> he has a lot of dogs. he loves the dogs. >> reporter: if this is love, i'd hate to see james hines' bad side. wearing heavy collars, chained to the fence, living in their own feces and urine. desperate for attention, friendly, but cower when we approach, a sure sign the dogs have been abused. this morning police acting on a search warrant for narcotics found the dogs at 1226 tinten avenue. police say four animals had to ride out this past weekend's blizzard in the backyard in makeshift shacks with no insulation or heaters. antwon

>> i've seen the ones in the backyard. i've seen them out there feeding them during the summertime. they wasn't being mistreated from what i saw. >> reporter: authorities saw it differently. we watched as the aspca carried out the animals, all shaking as they were removed. also inside his apartment police found 30 bags of crack cocaine and 20 vials of heroin. as for the dogs, one neighbor who didn't want to go on camera, told me he was glad authorities took the dogs, adding now hines can no longer, quote, beat and slam them around. back in march hines was also arrested. his dogs were malnourished, had open wounds and scabs on their backs. hall livers in the neighborhood and believes hines does care for his pets but couldn't handle all of the pitts. >> i see him around here walking the dogs but they don't like the fact that he has a lot of dogs and the way he's living.

>> ago james hines transferred from here. i asked him about his dogs. he told me they were all beautiful and well fed. i also did ask the aspca if these were the same dogs that were taken away from him in march, why were they given back? i didn't receive an answer back. cruelty charges. kemberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness news. two more victims of a house explosion last december in elizabeth have died. 11-year-old tyquan henderson died at the hospital yesterday. the death toll from the blast now stands at four. elizabeth's mayor said the ground floor of the three-story home had been illegally converted into an apartment and the explosion was caused by gas. 16 people lived in the home. meanwhile a show of support from new york city to philadelphia for a police officer who was ambushed on the job. take a look at this photo. nypd officers traveled

to meet officer jesse hartnett. philadelphia police posted the group picture on twitter. the philadelphia police officer survived being shot three times in an ambush as he sat in his patrol car. >> public health officials are teaming up with the state of new york to curb sexual assault on campus. faculty and staff will be taught how to recognize signs of abusive relationships or sexual violence. they also will be taught how to intervene to protect vulnerable students. once they complete the program, the faculty and staff members will be certified to train students. the training will be funded by a $500,000 federal grant. you may recall the young doctor seen on camera having a violent confrontation with an uber driver. she is now talking exclusively with abc news about what happened. angeline rancusen calls it the biggest

has an explanation for her bad behavior. >> probably was one of the worst days of my life and i was caught at my lowest moment. >> reporter: that's what the 30-year-old says about the night she went on this tirade, berating an uber driver in public in downtown miami. video of the confrontation spread like wildfire on social media. >> i'm a 5-foot girl that weighs 100 pounds. i'm getting really belligerent right now. >> reporter: she admits she was drinking that night but she said her dad was hospitalized that day and she had just broken up with her boyfriend. >> in the moment i was just so angry. i wasn't really thinking. >> reporter: she paid for his losses and apologized, but her job is still in jeopardy. she's a fourth year neurology resident at one of miami's most prestigious hospitals. she's currently on administrative leave. she says since that

targeted and she's been bullied online. >> i think it's ridiculous and i'm here to own up to what i did. i'm taking probability for it and i'm asking for forgiveness. >> reporter: snow -- now she has a message for others. asking people to use what happened to her as a lesson. >> be careful what you do in public because the things we do can be taped and we can suffer severe ramifications for these things. >> she doesn't know if or when she will get her job back. the hospital is conducting an internal investigation and uber has banned her from using its service. survivors of auschwitz return to the concentration camp to remember the holocaust of the 71st anniversary of its liberation. they laid flowers on a spot called the wall of death. 6 million jews were

the new york jets will pay a group of former cheerleaders. the group of more than 50 women sued the team over wages. they said they weren't paid for practices and other work and were forced to pay for their makeup, hair care, and transportation. the team denied the claims but said it agreed to settle in order to avoid the expense and distraction of litigation. a professional ballroom dancer who lost a leg in the boston marathon bombings is training to run for this year's race. adrian says she's running to raise money and awareness for limbs for life, an organization that provides prosthesis to amputees. she lost her left leg below the knee in the april 2013 attack and last spring she and a partner danced a fox trot across the finish line.

traffic stop goes from routine to unruly when a driver jumped behind the wheel of a state trooper's car. >> pretty boring out here. >> there's not a lot to do in oklahoma. >> it was kind of boring until state troopers in oklahoma found large bags of marijuana in the trunk of the man's car. that's when the suspect slipped his handcuff hands from back to front and then hopped in to the driver's side of the squad car. he was caught and arrested about an hour later. a 99-year-old woman gets a frightening wake-up call when in the middle of the night a strange animal tries to cuddle up to her. she woke up to find this on her chest. it had somehow gotten to her home in miami and it's called a kimkaju. they're members of the raccoon family but they're growing in popularity as pets. >> i guess her first impression was that might be a cat, but when they both got a look at each other, they both freaked out.

>> it's floral in the eyewitness news studio. outside we go. there's our studios on the upper west side. see there's a sheen on the streets. just wet now but it icing later. our backyard is central park. 42 degrees right now. look what's gone on in central park since getting nearly 27 inches of snow. over the past few days the melting has really accelerated and now down to 9-inch snow depth in central park. you might be saying near your house. i got a tweet from queens, saying wait, we're definitely doing melting over the next several days in to the upcoming weekend. numbers will go below freezing in new york city. the five boroughs are not representative of much of the we're concerned about some icy roads. increasing roads tomorrow, light, winds around 40. decent day. we have a couple patchy clouds that are falling apart right now. then we're watching a couple storms. we've been looking at this in the weather map.

have a clipper system up here, a storm coming out of the golf. we hoped they wouldn't phase in to a big coastal storm. looks like they're going to remain independent with this storm going offshore. we may be on the western fringe of some of its clouds. it's this clipper that will come through on friday. worst case there are a couple brief squalls that go across the northern suburbs and leave a quick dusting or coating. we'll watch out for that. i updated lows tonight. our computer mod els i don't think were handling it that well. we could see mid teens, like 15 monticello, sussex, poughkeepsie. 20, white plains. 29, i slip. well below freezing. up to 40 during the afternoon in many spots with sun giving way to clouds. on the 7-day accuweather forecast on friday, after that threat of a snow shower through let's say lunchtime, these yellows and reds can be 35-mile-per-hour gusts. it's very blustery on friday afternoon and then the chill starts to leave over the weekend.

the car the carbon monoxide climbed to a dangerous level. and at the same time, the oxygen level dropped. >> the meter that went offs -- went off was set to go off when the oxygen level goes down below 19%. >> reporter: i reached out also to the national carbon monoxide experts online at carbonmonoxidemyths.com. they said what we created at the fire department was a, quote, death chamber, and within 15 to 20 minutes carbon monoxide poisoning can killane car like that. they say time and space changed everything and that's why the home alarm did not sound. >> if you can take a couple extra steps to clear around your car before you start it up, you may end up saving your family's life or your own life. >> so scary to see what we saw today. make sure when you see as much snow as we've seen this year in a couple days, always dig out around the tail pipe before you turn it on to warm up the car.
