at the top donald trump holds a slight lead over ted cruz. hillary clinton is running neck and neck with bernie sanders. >> are we going to see an upset tomorrow? dave evans is in des moines tonight. >> reporter: the big news tonight in iowa is this new poll from the des moines register. a respected news organization with a track record on calling these races correctly. if you look at the republican side of the race right now, donald trump regained the lead over ted cruz. if you look at all the polling in the last few days in iowa, new hampshire and also in south carolina he may run the tables in this primary vote. on the democratic side hillary clinton and bernie sanders neck and neck in today's poll. it is too close to call and she enjoys a 3 point lead. >> secretary of state and the next president of the united states hillary clinton. >> reporter: eight years ago she finished third in iowa and she's hoping that's history. >> i know many of you here are

jones and 28-year-old marshall. lucy young in newark tonight. >> reporter: more than 24 hours later, still no arrest in this chilling double murder. three little children were in the home when their mother and her boyfriend were so viciously gunned down. balloons were added to the makeshift memorial tonight in honor of the young children left without their mother. >> we heard 6 to 8 gunshots and after the gunshots was finished we saw the little girl say where's my mommy? >> reporter: even in newark where shootings are frequent this one was brutal. saturday night 23-year-old ashley jones was gunned down inside her apartment here on clinton place. also in the apartment according to authorities her three young children ages 1, 3 and 4. they were not injured but 28-year-old marshall, her boyfriend, was also killed. >> she was a good person. >> reporter: according to friends and neighbors ashley feared for her life and obtained a restraining order against a

one neighbor says that abusive ex-boyfriend showed up just last week. >> she was trying to get away. she climbed through the window. >> reporter: and onto your fire escape? >> yeah. her right eye was black and blue. >> she was a growing young lady. growing beautiful family and couldn't find a sweeter person. >> reporter: now we're told the children were checked out at the hospital and are now staying with relatives. no word at this hour on the status of the mother's ex-boyfriend. live outside police head quarters in newark, lucy yang. police are investigating a stabbing death in brooklyn. jonathan rennie was found this morning and he has several stab wounds. emergency crews took him to the dead. a knife was recovered at the scene. no arrests have been made.

in harlem, police are investigating another slashing attack inside the city's subway system. the victim, a 27-year-old man got into an argument with a woman early this morning inside the 110th street station. the woman asked another man for help. police say that man slashed the victim in the face and took off. this is the sixth such attack so far this year. police in newark are investigating an overnight burglary at a church. the thief broke into the greater church on elizabeth avenue by creating a hole in the roof. the burglar took off with food and personal items. church members say the break in won't break their spirits. >> it could have been worse. this could have been worse. this could have been a tragedy we could have been mourning somebody right now or mourning the fact that something else could have happened. this is only a setback from our come up. >> detectives want to talk to

near the church with large amounts of canned goods. a reminder for drivers in the city tomorrow. alternate side parking rules resume. you must move your car monday. this will help the city remove the remaining snow piles laying around. warm temperatures melted away most of the snow. there's more weather to come. more warm weather. jeff smith is here with a look at his forecast. >> the snow is dwindling in new york city. probably between two and three inches as high temperatures got up to 56 in the park with no snow on the ground. in poughkeepsie it got up to 61 and right now temperatures have only fallen down to 51 in central park. that wind coming in from the south around 5 miles per hour and temperatures overnight probably staying steady in the mid-40s. we might dip down to 44 at the lowest.

>> two virginia tech students are facing charges in the death of a 13-year-old girl. nicole lavell's body was found yesterday afternoon in north carolina several days after she disappeared from her virginia home. 18-year-old davidizen hour is charged with her murder and earlier they arrested natalie keepers. she faces charges of accessory and improper disposal of a body. investigators continue to search for evidence. they believe they knew each other before she disappeared. captured on a police dash cam. a new jersey police officer involved in a close call with a burning out of control truck.

truck on fire on route 15 yesterday afternoon as smoke poured from the engine. officers got the driver and passenger out safely. other officers closed the southbound lanes because of the danger. the burning truck began to roll backwards towards two police vehicles. they ran to get his car out of the way. he dove out of the way at the last second. >> what happened was this truck was clearly from the fire. >> the truck stopped when it hit a guardrail. he severely bruised his right shoulder and hurt his left knee. he'll be off the job for several weeks. a woman was injured after driving a van into a building in queens. it happened at a car detailing center after midnight. one eye witness says he was sitting in a car parked outside the building when he heard the

>> i came out the car and i seen a van outside the shop. it's a good thing i'm still alive. i could have been in there. >> the driver was able to get out of the van but she was bleeding. no word on her condition. the city officials ordered that building vacated because of heavy structure damage. happening tomorrow we should learn more about the deadly amtrack train derailment last may. they're set to release documents from the investigation including the transcript with the interview with the engine. the train went off the tracks and eight people died. more than 200 were hurt. away. a deal reached to limit helicopter noise over manhattan. did you see the fire ball over the northeast coast? what experts say it was. talk about overdue. a man in new jersey finds a

people in a half dozen states and two countries reported seeing a bright fireball streaking through the sky at 6:20 last night. what was it? a meteor. it was seen in new jersey, new york and canada. this video from a dash board camera of a man driving in virginia. lots of people saw it. >> it's always interesting. maybe it was a meteor. maybe it was something else. >> i didn't see it but any time

upper atmosphere at that speed will burn up and cause the fire ball. the bigger the object the bigger the meteor. >> the weather is not spring like but pretty nice for february. >> almost. milder potentially during the day tomorrow and then again on wednesday. by wednesday we pay for that warmth with potentially heavy rain. we're taking a live look towards central park and still 51 degrees. we're coming in from the south around 5 miles per hour. this is after getting up to 56 during the afternoon, which by the way is a full 17 degrees above normal. normal high this time of year is around 39. the record was 63. we didn't quite hit that. that was set in 1947. patchy fog will form overnight into tomorrow morning and this mild air over the snow pack. that difference in temperature causing the fog to develop. it's a moist air mass as well.

getting as warm as they got today but a few afternoon showers around and we're quiet on tuesday and cooler. still above average. windy, wet and warm, though, on wednesday as we approach 60 degrees in parts of the area. 44 in newark and we head outside of the city and we're 51 in central park and it is significantly colder especially over northwestern new jersey. 30 in morris town and 32 in sussex and upper 40s down the jersey shore. a batch of clouds moving through right now. fog developing overnight would be the main concern right into tomorrow morning's morning commute. here's 8:00 in the morning. a little fog and temperatures in the mid-40s. a front moves on through and not impressed with the dynamics in the atmosphere and it won't produce much in the way of rainfall but there can be a spotty shower or two and that can last in the early evening. not before temperatures get in the 50s tomorrow. on tuesday a quiet day and

middle 40s and on the warm side of the big storm. you'll hear about this because it'll cause blizzard conditions in the midwest. that'll be after the iowa caucuses but it moves in wednesday and it'll be windy and stormy and could have heavy downpours and that's followed by colder air. partly cloudy and patchy late night fog that can last into tomorrow morning. temperatures around 46 at 7 in the morning. a few afternoon showers tomorrow. very mild. the high up to 57 and even a degree warmer than today. it's a passing evening shower or two tomorrow night and clearing and down to 39. here's the accuweather 7-day forecast. a quiet day on tuesday, 45. windy, wet on wednesday and in fact, on wednesday we could have heavy enough rain to have local flooding with the left over snow pack and piles we had.

the presidential candidates have been cris crossing the state hoping to draw in undecided voters. donald trump leads for the republicans and hillary clinton holds a slim slim lead on the democratic side. tomorrow new york health officials will hold a webinar to discuss ways to combat the zika virus. >> there are nine cases in new york and 37 in the u.s. lawmakers want to take action to stop the spread before this summer. >> lucy yang has the story. >> reporter: a summertime pest or worldwide health emergency? the mosquito born zika virus and the potential to spread have some politicians calling for global action. >> we have to build a fire wall. a fire wall against zika that prevents it from coming to new york and to america. >> reporter: the zika virus is spread from infected mosquitos.

4,000 babies have been born with something called microefaly. >> reporter: lieu ki yang, channel 7 eye witness news. a police investigation in jersey city after a child fell out of an apartment window and died. a 4-year-old boy tumbled out of a fifth floor window tat summit plaza apartment building yesterday afternoon. first responders found the boy in a parking lot and rushed him to the hospital where he died. detectives are investigating but the death appears to be a tragic accident. in newark police say an officer shot and wounded a man who shot at him during a traffic stop. police stopped the car on south orange avenue around 9:30 last night. the driver got out and opened fire and the officer shot back. the man was hospital. doctors list him in stable condition and say his injuries are not life threatening. the officer has been with the newark police force for nearly a decade.

bmw involved in a hit and run in williamsburg. investigators say a gray bmw 323 i hit a woman on rodney street yesterday morning. a taxi stopped to let the woman cross the street. that's when the driver of the bmw passed the cab, hit the woman and took off. the victim suffered head trauma. doctors now list her condition as critical. authorities accuse a long island man of causing a big scare at a department store in nassau county. police say 53-year-old elvis governor told a 911 operator there was a bomb inside macy's last thursday. officers closed the store for several hours but they didn't find anything. investigators arrested governor yesterday. police charged him with making a terrorist threat. the university of albany says a group of students was harassed and assaulted on a city

the attack was caught on a cell phone. three black women said about a dozen white men and women used racial slurs while hitting them. their injuries were minor and police are investigating. in a letter the president calls upon all members to unite and we must show the world we stand for inclusiveness and stand against bias, violence and hatred. new york city strikes a deal with helicopter operator to reduce -- by the start of 2017. sefan kim with reaction. >> reporter: at the downtown heliport half a dozen helicopters can take off every hour. soon that'll change under an agreement announced between the nyc and the helicopter tourism

they'll no longer be flights on sundays and 50% fewer flights the rest of the time. the deal is a result of noise complaints from residents. >> 2% less is excellent. it's definitely good progress for now. >> we're used to hearing it. overhead, boom, boom. >> the noise coming over is distracting and it's not nice. >> reporter: operators have agreed to end all flights over governor's island. sunday flights will be grounded starting this april and tour operators have until january 2017 to reduce flights by 50%. the agreement will result in the elimination of 30,000 flights a year. so some residents feel mixed about the impact it'll have on the tourism industry and others say the changes go too far. >> it takes away from the character of the city when you start taking away tourism options for people. >> i think it's great. at the same time the business is up and down.

a massachusetts man is thankful for godly neighbors as he recovers after a serious accident. the 75-year-old was chopping

his home when he got trapped. one of the sisters who lived nearby was walking and praying in the same woods. the nun ran back to the abbey and got help. >> the nuns found them and they went out and investigated and found where he was and they had to tell somebody. the patient told us himself he's been there for two hours and was lucky somebody heard him screaming for help. >> you heard him say the nuns called 911. firefighters found and freed the man and he remains in the hospital being treated for leg injuries and hypothermia. a painting hice case. someone swiped the r2d2 painting earlier this month. the pizza shop put out the word and hoped for its safe return. on friday a man drove up on a motorcycle wearing a storm trooper helmet. he dropped off something rapped

they'll be patchy fog developing towards the predawn hours. temperatures probably bottoming out in the 40s at the lowest. after getting up to 56 during the day today and got up to 62 at poughkeepsie and the reason it got warm in the mid hudson valley, they have no snow on the ground. you can see on the current snow depth map. this is rare to see. still several inches of snow on the ground over parts of northern new jersey. this snow pack has really been dwindling the past few days with the warm weather. that's good news for those of you moving your cars tomorrow for alternate side parking going back into effect. 32 in sussex and there are cold readings west of the city. there's a front approaching during the day tomorrow and with that a shower or two in the afternoon and in the meantime 44 overnight and back up to 57 tomorrow and patchy fog early
