hospital but later died. late this afternoon, investigators from the bergen county prosecutor's office were spotted carrying bags of evidence as they worked the scene of a fatal stabbing along old river road here in edge water. sources tell eyewitness news the victim is a 16-year-old male. >> and it looked like blood? >> it was definitely blood. >> reporter: area resident michael fiori says he was startled to see a trail of blood in the street as he took his 3-year-old to school this morning. >> there was a yellow marker with the blood, and progressive in front of the restaurants. >> reporter: that row of restaurants and other small businesses normally the center of activity in this community, and today at the center of a murder investigation. those who live around hero say this fay -- here say this fatal stabbing so close to home has left them shaken. >> i frequent all those shops that are blocked off. i was worried about the people inside and what was going on. >> reporter: so far

the name of the victim. nor have they revealed the circumstances surrounding his death. they have spent all day going over the crime scene, trying to figure out who killed this teenager and why. >> obviously this is usually a pretty peaceful neighborhood, so i don't know what's going on. >> reporter: back live now here in edge water, still a very active scene. it appears that they are out to wrap up some of the work here. we are awaiting additional information from the prosecutor's office, perhaps more information about who this 16-year-old is, and who may be a suspect in his killing. for now, we're live in edge water, i'm sandra bookman, channel 7 eyewitness news. sandra, thank you. now to the race for president and the caucuses in iowa begin in just about 90 minutes from now. what happens there tonight could shake up the race significantly. the three candidates from our area all hoping for a strong finish, hillary clinton, donald trump, and new jersey governor chris christie. political reporter dave evans is in des moines for us tonight

>> reporter: liz, as you know, governor christie might have to keep hoping for that strong finish in iowa. he's not expected to do very well in iowa. he might in new hampshire next week. we'll see. there is a new poll in iowa showing how the race shapes up right now at this moment. it shows on the democratic side, it is neck and neck. it remains that way in this poll, bernie sanders ever so slightly ahead of hillary clinton by about 3 points. on the republican side, though, it shows donald trump may be headed to a big win tonight. >> tonight, you know, it really is, it's crunch time. >> reporter: new polling gives donald trump reason for confidence today, and in his iowa wrap up, plenty of anger. >> i want to win iowa. it's going to send such a great message that we're not going to take it anymore. we're not going to take it. we're not going to take it anymore. we're going to take our country back. we're going to make america great again. >> i'm calling on behalf of rand paul. >> reporter: tonight the big push to get voters out to each

volunteers urge voters, don't believe the nay sayers. >> these national polls, this year, in particular, they can't be trusted. >> i am a guy who's feeling extraordinarily zen. i am feeling in touch with my inner self- >> reporter: and governor christie refused to engage with a testy voter telling us he won't lose sleep over iowa. >> the first caucus of 50 contests is no time to get worried. if i got worried that quick, i would have never run against john corsi. >> reporter: hillary clinton kept a low profile today thanks volunteers and telling reporters, don't believe the bernie hype. >> i know how you get things done. i am a progressive who wants to make progress, and actually produce real results in people's lives. that's what i'm offering. i'm not overpromising. >> clinton has the support of mayor de blasio, he campaigned for her in iowa but today spoke more about republicans than her current competition.

for that matter is going to be an agent of greater economic fairness. >> reporter: at what sanders event, he had nice things to say about hillary clinton. what in your opinion is wrong with hillary clinton. >> i think she's too ingrained in the system. i think we need a change. >> reporter: sanders knows we need lots of new and younger voters. >> we will win tonight if the voter turnout is higher. we will struggle tonight if the voter turnout is low. that's the fact. >> reporter: and the caucus sites here in iowa, they open at 7:00 tonight. that is 8:00 eastern time. republicans tell us they may have results, should have results within a couple of hours. the democrats, they take a little bit longer because the process in iowa is a little bit more complicated than republicans. by 10:00 eastern time, we hope by 11:00, we will have results for you. we will keep our fingers crossed. report live in des moines, dave evans channel 7 eyewitness news. and as david just said, we are hoping to have those

reaction of course on eyewitness news tonight at 11:00, and all evening at abc7ny, and david muir anchors world news tonight from iowa after this newscast. 2000 pages of documents tonight revealing new information about that amtrak derailment in philadelphia last may, a derailment that killed 8 people. the train's engineer, brian bostian initially telling investigators he had no recollection of the crash. six months later he tells them in detail, he remembers accelerating on a straight away and putting on the train's brake. the national transportation safety board says bostian was not on his cell phone at any time and that he tested clean for drugs and alcohol. meanwhile, a frightening amtrak incident in the same area as last spring's derailment tonight is under investigation. a rock hitting a cela express heading to new york. a window was cracked. nerves were shattered. was this an accident or did someone throw a rock. kemberly richardson is in

interview with the man sitting right next to the shattered window. >> reporter: well, bill, that train had just pulled out of the station here in downtown philadelphia, reginald osbourne tells me first he heard a loud thump. he thought they had hit something. he turned to his left, and couldn't believe what he was staring at, just a few inches from his face. >> it was really kind of almost emotional. as i was saying before, you can be. >> reporter: that's because reginald osbourne was staring right at this, a heavily damaged window. there he is last night sitting just inches from the severely cracked glass. he's talking only to eyewitness news. had anything come through, you would have been hit? >> yes. >> reporter: amtrak confirms the sudden startling incident unfolded here about 8 miles north of downtown philadelphia. train number 2222 was barreling through this area just before

something hit it. officials now believe that projectile was a rock. >> when it hit, it was sort of a thump. it almost sounded like somebody had slammed down a tray table really hard or dropped a stack of books. >> taylor was sitting two rows in front of reginald. both tell me all of this brings back awful memories of this horrific derailment last may. 8 people died that day. some 200 others were injured. it happened in the same area as last night ice incident. >> i'm nervous to ride the amtrak after what happened last time. i think they haven't made a lot of improvements to the amtrak for a long time, and i don't think they take safety very seriously on amtrak. >> reporter: amtrak tells me all windows are treated with a special glazing that reinforces them. still, reginald says he'll think twice next time he steps on board. >> the next time i'm pulling

philadelphia, i might be mindful not to sit next to a window. >> reporter: now, 201 passengers were riding on that train last night. amtrak tells me no one was hurt. but again, it's not clear tonight. did someone intentionally throw that rock at the train or was this an accident. for now, we're live in philadelphia, kemberly richardson channel 7 eyewitness news. thank you. a series of slashings on new york city subways is prompting the guardian angels to take action. the angels said they will begin to patrol the subways day and night. this comes after two more slashings over the weekend. the nypd has increased its present underground and police commissioner bill bratton suggested that perhaps parolees should be banned from the system all together. it's now an international emergency, the dire declaration from the world health organization over the explosive spread of the zika virus. the new york state health department offering free testing for people with

thorne is at the scene with new information. >> reporter: liz and bill, my sources tell me that the victim is 12-year-old gabrielle johnson. she was crossing the street here early this morning with her twin sister and another friend when she was hit. the damage to the suv shows just how horrible the impact was. philip tusont was only a few feet away from the 12-year-old when she was hit. >> she looked like she got hit fast on impact. i saw her body over the hood of the car. luckily the body didn't get ran over. i don't know how, you know, but he stopped a little before, and the body was behind the vehicle, so he was, you know, screeching on his brakes for a good, you know, 20 feet. it happened around 7:30 this morning as the girl was crossing elmont road to get to school. police say she was jay walking and crossed the street with traffic coming. investigators say they're investigating whether the driver, a 38-year-old man from

>> the girl was in 7th grade at elmont memorial high school. the superintendent released this statement to eyewitness news. the school has enacted its crisis plan and grief counselors will be made available to students and staff as needed. we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the student during this difficult time. students tell us this is a shortcut to get to school. there isn't a crossing guard, but this afternoon, nassau police officers were there monitoring students crossing the street during dismissal. parents say they hope to see more of this. >> they need more school guards in the street, because elmwood is a busy area. the traffic is really heavy during rush hour. >> reporter: right now the driver is not being charged, but police say that could change. we're live in elmont, i'm kristin thorne channel 7 eyewitness news. just heartbreaking, thank you. there's new information

tomorrow with a nice, sunny day. should feel great. this is the next storm, california storm yesterday, midwest plains storm today. snow approaching iowa, just waits until after the caucus to see the blizzard warnings go up. could be 8 to 12 inches of snow. for us, it's an evening shower in spots. others we're -- otherwise we're going to see clearing late. almost 12 degrees above average. for the afternoon commute, it's definitely going to be heavy, and probably windy as well. but potentially an inch of rainfall or more in spots. thursday, 51. cooler on friday, a mix of sun and clouds. on saturday, mostly sunny, the better half of the weekend. i dropped the sunday high right now. i think we might struggle to get out of the 40s. might be a couple snow showers. that's where things start to change. it's cool on monday. we're going to be watching the potential for a coastal storm in about a week's time, late

spring training for baseball starts in a couple weeks. and already the yankees have bad news. >> this is a rough one here. it's news that surprised fans had him wondering he did what when. the yankees greg bird who would soak up at bats, would mission the season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. originally injured that shoulder in the minor leagues last may. apparently this is a recurrence. he'll have surgery tomorrow, miss the entire season. bird might have started the stop sign in aaa but with mark detiara at first, bird figured to be with the yankees at some point. now not this year. super bowl week underway. let the fun begin. tuesday's traditional media day has been scrapped in favor of super bowl opening night. fans sit in the stand of an arena while players are interviewed, and that event sold out. both the broncos and panthers have arrived in the bay area for the game.

now it's about getting acclimated to the new surroundings and everything associated with the super bowl. one intense week for the fans and media. the goal is to try to make this a normal workweek under anything but normal circumstances. on the way back from practice this broncos bus was involved in a minor accident. nobody was injured here, but look at that, thousand players did tweet about this. traffic was backed up for a while. everybody is all safe and sound back in the hotel right now, but this is how the week starts. big news from the nfl today. former giant defensive end justin tucker announcing his retirement after eleven years in the league, tore a pack back in october. hasn't played since. 66 1/2 career sacks. third round pick by the giants. a big part of two super bowl winners. i shared justin's message to the fans on my facebook page. check it out there. nets at home tonight against the pistons, been a rough go lately.

beat the pistons earlier this season. knicks host the celtics, they have the warriors at the garden yesterday, and after an uncharacteristic slow start, golden state, held them to a season low 18 first quarter points but the knicks lost. that's five of their last six. knicks beat the suns on friday. today the suns fired head coach jeff hornacek. phoenix lost 19 of the last 21. now in need of a new coach. heck of a weekend for john scott, right, voted into the nhl all star game, basically as a joke. he's a journeyman enforcer, a total of five goals in an 8 year career. he played for the coyotes when he was named an all star. they traded him to the canadiens and scott said somebody from the nhl tried to talk him out of showing up to the all star game. asked if his two kids would be proud if he did. scott scored a couple of goals,
