finally tonight, a recap of our top story. a huge and surprising night in the iowa caucuses. on the republican side the projected winner, texas senator ted cruz, who edged out the billionaire businessman donald trump who'd been leading in the polls. another surprise, florida senator marco rubio coming in a close third, beating expectations. on the democratic side it is too

an arrest and a deadly stabbing in new jersey. we've learned tonight the young man taken in to custody has connections to new york city's mayor's office. good evening at 11:00. i'm liz cho. >> i ' m bill ritter. tonight a huge victory for ted cruz, a huge defeat for donald trump. the victory going to ted cruz thanks in large part to religious conservatives. trump coming in second, followed closely by marco rubio. the democrats, a tight race. still an extremely close race. too close to call between hillary clinton and bernie sanders, less than a point separating these two. former maryland governor martin o'malley barely in the caucuses, tonight dropping out and suspending his campaign. the big news right now cruz versus trump.

latest. >> as you mentioned this is a huge win for ted cruz this evening. the evangelical religious vote across iowa really turning out for him this evening. the polling in the last couple of days showed he was in the lead. but this is a humiliating experience for him in iowa this evening. the other big surprise is marco rubio doing much better than expected. donald trump. we heard a few minutes ago from both rubio and donald trump, this is what they had to say. >> we finished second and i i'm just honored. i'm really honored and i want to congratulate ted and i want to congratulate all of the incredible candidates. >> now the moment has roirfbd for -- arrived for this generation of americans to take our place and do what we must. and when i'm elected president of these great united states, we

>> on the democratic side it's simply too close to call. the democrats there on the left-hand side of the screen over here in the orange and kind of red color, you can see it is very, very tight. 49.9% for clinton. 49.5% for bernie sanders . this is the first state to vote in the nation but it's not a primary. it's a caucus. it's run very , very differently from a primary. we visited a couple sites tonight both republican and democrat and found a lot of passion. >> reporter: at least high school, this caucus meeting began with a count-off. they locked the door at 7:30 and figured up how many votes each candidate needed. >> we need 21 in each. >> reporter: here you physically get up and sit with the group supporting your candidate. >> trump. >> reporter: republicans in iowa do things a bit differently. no bartering. they simply count ballots, declare a winner. at this point

>> if the state me the honor of voting for me tonight, then we will have the team nationally to win the nomination. >> at this caucus location which is pretty close to downtown des moines, all the folks over here are hillary clinton supporters. if you go on the other side of the auditorium, this section right here, they're all for bernie sanders. if you go right in the middle of the auditorium, this small group right here, o'malley supporters. there are not enough of these voters so they're going to have to decide which camp they're going to join. >> reporter: then the horse trading began. >> only bernie sanders is standing up for bust up big banks. >> reporter: this retired school teacher, a proud bernie persuade those o'malley voters to join her. almost every one of them did. but hillary clinton ultimately won this caucus site 2-1, saying sanders

khari noerdlinger fighting off an armed robber with a knife. lucy yang in edge water, new jersey. >> the violent stabbing of a teenager in this quiet borough of edge water, new jersey is shocking enough but tonight we're learning it has a political twist. >> reporter: 19-year-old car --khari noerdlinger now stands accused of killing a 16-year-old boy sunday night. khari is the son of rachel noerdlinger. khari noerdlinger is now charged with aggravated manslaughter, possession of a weapon and hindering apprehension. >> i'm shocked. i live here because it's a safe neighborhood. for this to happen, it just goes to show no place is safe. >> reporter: according to police, five people, mostly teenagers from the nyack spring valley area came in to edge water sunday night with the nent nent -- with the intent to rob. we're told they confronted noerdlinger. a fight broke out.

when noerdlinger fatally stabs one of the teens in the leg. was noerdlinger a victim acting in self-defense, or is there more to his involvement? according to his attorney, quote, he fought them off and gets rewarded with a manslaughter charge. >> i've never had a problem. i don't see anybody fighting. it's a qui et neighborhood. it's a great place to live. >> reporter: rachel noerdlinger had a bumpy ride as first lady. she was dating a convicted killer then and her son was arrested at 17. rachel noerdlinger would eventually have to step down. meanwhile the four others who allegedly came here sunday night to wreak havoc have been arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery. >> one official told me tonight khari noerdlinger is no stranger to the local police. lucy yang, channel 7 eyewitness news. we've got a developing story now happening on staten island.

have been hurt. the fdny has put out the house fire in the neighborhood but one firefighter fell through the floor in the basement. he's in serious condition but his injuries are not considered life-threatening. no word yet on the injuries of the other firefighters. service is finally back to normal tonight for metro north riders after a long and frustrating evening commute home and it was all due to police activity at the botanical garden in the bronx. tim fleischer experienced that, posted that video on facebook. the grand terminal filled up with commuters not commuting. trains on the harlem and new haveren lines did not stop in the bronx and were delayed up to an hour in both directions. service is back to normal. an emotionally disturbed person jumping out of an

it happened in the county of holtsville. carolina leid is at the scene with the story. >> we still have a very active crime scene here on long island. take a live look at police who have closed off the off ramp from the l.i.e. and that's closed because of this ongoing investigation. around 7:00 tonight four hours ago, an ambulance was taking a patient to stony brook university hospital when for some strange reason the patient jumped out of the moving vehicle on to busy nickels road just south of the long island expressway. why that person jumped, we don't know. the patient was then run over by a car that did not stop and kept going southbound. that victim was pronounced dead at the scene. suffolk police are investigating and this stretch of roadway will remain closed until they finish gathering the evidence that they need. as of now there is no description of the car that hit that patient that kept going and no word on

the ambulance in the first place. also we've reached out to the ambulance company. we've not reporting live in holtsville, carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news. the nypd tonight searching for a dangerous armed robber who's holding up people at manhattan. police released a surveillance image of the man they're now looking for. they say he's responsible for at least five robberies since december. in each robbery the man follows the victim in to a building lobby or an elevator, then pulls out a gun and demands cash and their belongings. a new york cop stabbed during a violent confrontation today in brooklyn tonight is recovering at home. officers responding to a call in prospect heights about an emotionally disturbed woman. they say the woman stabbed the lieutenant in the left arm before other cops subdued her. the woman now in custody. free testing for the zika virus is now being offered by the new york state department of

virus zones. the world health organization is now calling the virus an international emergency. experts estimate there could be up to 4 million cases diagnosed in the next year. new yorkers who want to be tested should see their own doctor. meanwhile the u.s. military is now offering to relocate pregnant department of defense workers from areas in the south and central america where the zika virus is spreading. the virus is suspected of being linked to a rare birth defect that causes an abnormally small head size and brain damage in infants. dramatic information about the deadly train derailment in philadelphia. twice interviewing the train's engineer. initially he said he had no recollection of the crash but six months later he gave details about accelerating then braking.

the street protectors known as the guardian angels protecting the new york city subways. the group who burnished their reputations in the crime ridden streets of new york decades ago now patrolling, looking for slashers. >> reporter: for legions of new yorkers the guardian angels are a symbol of the old days where crime ran rampant in the 90s, a waiver of highly publicized slashing underground since new year's, tonight they're back. >> a slashing here, a slashing there. that's what paralyzes people. >> reporter: for the first time since '94, curtis has brought his group of volunteers in to the subways day and night to supplement a police presence he says is simply not sufficient. >> police officers start in the back.

i haven't seen that. i think that's contributed to the rise in crime. >> reporter: police say the recent dips are not related. bill bratton blamed a small group of career criminals he wants to ban from the mta all together. >> some of these career recidivist criminals who use the subways to prey on victims that we find some way of excluding them from the subway as conditions of their parole, if they're being paroled or try to maintain article over the subways. >> i pray and i just try not to worry about it. i try to keep myself busy doing my games so i don't have to look at nobody. >> reporter: bratton is working with the mta and state legislature. he's beefed up patrols underground. city leaders urge perspective. there

new year's on a system that serves on any given weekday 5 and a half million people. >> ride service lyft is now cutting prices as well, at least temporarily. lyft is telling customers prices will dip 15% lower for a limited item. last week you may remember uber announced it was cutting prices in new york city by 15%. drivers worry, however, a price war could really reduce the amount they can earn. if the weather continues like this, fewer people will be taking cars. they'll just be walking everywhere the rest of the winter. >> beautiful for walking tonight. >> it's been unbelievable the last couple days. we've got mild weather through the middle of the week. soaking rain in the forecast. outside tonight we have mainly clear skies to partly cloudy skies as the rain moves out. visibility is good from spire to spire. empire down to one world trade. we're still at 46 degrees. that's still above our normal daytime high. we had 59 degrees in new

20 degrees above the average. sunshine and shadows for ground-hog day. we have our scorecard set to go. we'll be following punxsutawney phil, melbourne mel and streaming on our website too. soggy and 60 degrees on wednesday. then it turns much cooler as we go in to the upcoming weekend by sunday. not so much saturday. might have a couple flurries by the time we get to sunday. our temperatures are now near freezing in andover. still snow pack in northern new jersey, melting and refreezing. watch out for icy spots north and west. otherwise 44 in islip. 39 in belmar right now. here's the plan ner through tomorrow. a lot of sunshine. light wind. cool start. upper 40s to around 50 degrees. running 10 degrees cooler than yesterday but a lot sunnier. there are the showers from earlier in the evening, trying to move away right now and the skies are clearing. got this little area of high pressure, extension of canada coming down. then connected to this front is the blizzard developing.

come to an end. the blizzard movers in. but -- moves in. we're on the storm track with rainy conditions through wednesday. if you watch the timing here, skies clear out. we've got a sunny day coming up tomorrow. look for the clouds to increase tomorrow night. during the evening hours, rain getting in cleveland. our first raindrops will arrive for the morning commute wednesday although i think it's light through much of the morning hours, getting steadier during the afternoon and probably the worst conditions could be around the evening commute wednesday with gusty winds and heavy downpours. close to an inch of rain. then that rain will move out during the evening hours. mostly clear tomorrow morning. 38. then 48 tomorrow. mostly sunny. still mild for february. tomorrow night, couple showers start developing. by the time we get to late evening on wednesday, we could have an inch of rain across parts of the area, even more off to the north and west. on thursday, 51. cooler on friday.

weekend, sunday we point out. at that point might be a couple snow showers. the next threat of a coastal storm will come in about a week's time. probably around next tuesday. might have enough cold air that it's not all rain. we'll be watching that closely. big ticket item this week is the soaking rainstorm. bill evans will have an update on that timing on ground-hog day. we'll head back to iowa where you can see the big winner. >> let me first of all say to god be the glory. tonight is a victory for the grassroots. tonight is a victory for courageous curves across iowa

nation. tonight the state of iowa has spoken. iowa has sent notice that the republican nominee and the next president of the united states will not be chosen by the media. >> ted cruz giving a victory speech tonight in des moines, iowa. cruz with an impressive victory by at least 5 points over second place new yorker donald trump and about 6 points ahead so far of marco rubio. this race is now on i do everything on the internet but, it's kind of slow. my friends say i should get fios because it's the fastest. i just downloaded 600 photos in 60 seconds. that's seriously better. practice today heading south on route 101. everybody able to make it to super bowl opening night. this is taking the place of what used to be media day and the tuesday before the super bowl, the broncos the afc champs. peyton manning the big draw for them and he will be for the rest of the week for this reason. speculation that manning may be playing his final game. >> what i said was what i said. i said this could be. doesn't mean it will be. i'm aware this could be it. panthers came in to the building. the nfc champs are a favorite to win this season. cam newton is the leader of the panthers. >> we wouldn't be here if it didn't take a group of men to come together to be humble and come together and work as a team. >> former giants defensive end justin tuck announced his retirement today. 11 years in the nfl. spent the last two
