had the presence of mind to hide her baby boy in a closet. >> they found her 5-month-old son who thankfully was unharmed. >> reporter: the next two murders were saturday night, the 23-year-old mother of two of the suspects' children was killed. her name was ashley jones, and she had a restraining order against holland. her new partner, janelle marshall, 28, was also shot to death. two little girls, 1 and 3 years old, and one boy, 4, were in the apartment at the time and like the 5-month-old were not physically hurt. the acting county prosecutor says if someone is bent on doing harm, there's little they can do to protect women from abusers. >>s intent for whatever their own reasons are on committing an act of violence, the restraining itself cannot obviously stop somebody willing to go so far as aggravated assault or murder or a firearms type murder from

>> again, three murders, four children physically unhurt but left tonight without their parents. this murder suspect is being held on $2.5 million bail. live in newark tonight, michelle charlesworth, channel 7 eyewitness news. also in newark, a developing story. three children run down by a pickup truck. eyewitness news obtaining this surveillance video. we're not showing the moment of impact. it happened just after 3:00 this afternoon. the truck just kept going. it is not clear at this time if the driver was even aware of what happened. we're told the children have minor injuries. they went to the hospital as a precaution. we have breaking news right now in mahwah, new jersey. firefighters are battling a fire at a condo complex. it looks like a lot of the flames are out at this point but still some smoke there. let's check in with shannon sohn. >> the smoke continues to billow up out of the vents in the roof, but for the most part

upper hand on the blaze that started at 980 juniper way. the fire department did have to rescue one person that was on one of these upper floor balconies. obviously this is a three-story condo complex and the fire was mostly on the floor but it was so strong and so fierce, it quickly went through the attic and in to the loft. the fire department still there, trying to get out some of the hotspots. every now and then we see flames coming up. no one injured here. the fire department activity spilling off juniper way to pepperidge road. reporting live over mahwah, shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. another subway slashing, police say a mentally disturbed man picked a fight with a passenger and slashed him in the face. custody. even so, with news of yet another slashing, there's

darla miles with more. >> there's increased police presence here at the subway station as there has been after every slashing. you also get a good number of strap hangers who say this is new york, you have to watch your back, but then there's are a lot of people saying they need a better solution to the overall problem. >> the commotion and the students were being held downstairs. >> reporter: the latest slashing, this time in brooklyn ground. >> i came up. of commotion. i just kind of looked around, i asked some people and they said someone got slashed. then the cops and everybody was around. then the train came and we all got on the train. >> reporter: police say a 30-year-old man was waiting at the pennsylvania avenue livonia avenue subway station in brownsville. the suspect, who they say is a diagnosed schizophrenic, was pacing back and forth on the platform and asked, wanna fight? then threw coffee on the victim's back.

the official results from the caucuses in iowa coming in this afternoon with hillary clinton narrowly beating bernie sanders by literally 2/10ths of a point. ted cruz with 27.7%. donald trump, 24 .3%, and marco rubio coming in at a strong third with 23.1%. what are the candidates doing now? marci gonzalez is live with the answer. >> most of them are keeping busy with event after event here in new hampshire. wasting no time with just a week to go before the next big vote. >> reporter: on the trail in new hampshire fueled by iowa-inspired optimism. >> what a victory last night. >> reporter: ted cruz pulling off a big win in the caucuses ahead of donald trump. the one-time frontrunner calling his

>> keller due back in court march 7th. he's charged with second degree murder. flames started in the duct work of a restaurant on the first floor of a building on west 100th street. the fire then spread to the apartments on the second and third floors through the walls. at one point thick coming from the roof. a water main break disrupted the commute this morning in queens. newscopter7 was over the scene in hill crest near the manhattan bound parkway. water flooded the parkway's service road before it was finally capped. on what caused it. the commissioner of the country's biggest police force, the man in charge of preventing terror attacks in new york city today testifying to congress about the nypd's counterterrorism efforts. >> added almost $160 million of technology including issuance development of smart phones to all 36,000 officers.

blockbuster testimony today in the bill cosby case. a former district attorney says cosby should not be prosecuted for sexual assault because he gave the disgraced comedian his word 10 years ago. and he says that word is binding. a hearing in the philadelphia suburb of norristown. eyes -- witness reporter kemberly richardson is there for us now. >> hours of testimony, one hostile witness, then bill cosby. all right now inside

continued. bruce caster, the man who allegedly brokered that immunity deal for cosby. he is a defense witness, at one point he barked at cosby's lawyer, quote, i'm not on your team. >> reporter: bill cosby walked in to the courthouse well aware this hearing can make or break it when it comes to the felony sexual assault case against him. at issue, what did or did not happen back in 2005. in 2004 former temple university employee andrea constand maintains cosby violated her here inside his mansion outside of philadelphia, gave her wine and pills that left her unable to move. he denies it and criminally charged. things were far from over. nearly five weeks ago charges were filed against the 78-year-old just before the statute of limitations expired. cosby's current legal team is

those charges, saying back in 2005, cosby's former attorney made a deal with bruce castor, giving cosby immunity from ever being criminally prosecuted in this case. today castortold the judge he did that hoping it would force cosby to testify, bringing justice to constand, that he wanted cosby punished and in the end, quote, make constand a millionaire. prosecutors maintain there is no evidence of a binding agreement. the judge will make the final decision. >> right out of the gate at the start of today's hearing, the judge pointed out there's very little [ inaudible ] with respect to a hearing like this. he has indicated he'll make a decision tonight. if we get that we'll bring it right to

channel 7 eyewitness news. meanwhile, as mr. cosby faced a judge in pennsylvania today, a model out in california who accused him of sexually assaulting her dropped her case against him. chloe goins dismissed the dispute. she claimed cosby drugged and sexually abused her in 2008. a fierce explosion in upstate new york and a house tonight is destroyed. an apparent gas leak being the cause of this explosion. this may have been caused by a car hitting and then sheering off a gas meter. a nearby home was also damaged. nobody was hurt . a good samaritan who wanted to help people in water contaminated flint, michigan are about to see their efforts come volunteers water. the problem, though, they didn't have a way to get all that water to flint.

friday and after seeing it, a company called finkle freight logistics stepped up and provided a truck for the mission. that truck now on its way to flint. we say thank you. it's not the same as believing in santa claus but if you believe the groundhogs, spring is coming. he didn't see his shadow. turns out punxsutawney phil agreed with chuck. he didn't see his shadow either. this is just the 18th time phil has predicted an early spring since 1887. same groundhog. this isn't like last year or something. this is an old german legend that says if a groundhog sees his shadow, winter is just six more weeks. if he does see it -- >> do we believe in groundhogs? >> apparently some people do. >> yes, every day. because i think this is where we'll see some of rainfall totals pushing an inch north and west. 49 in coastal and east rutherford coming in at 49. long island likely to see the least rainfall. however, i think it will last longer in long island late tomorrow night, even in to the wee hours of the morning thursday. 43 48 in poughkeepsie. if there's rain at 8:00 in the morning, it's probably in the north and west suburbs. rain coat, umbrella tomorrow. don't have to have a lot of layers. 50, around 60 in the early evening. clouds starting to increase from the west. they're back over the ohio valley. there's our storm center and when a storm cuts to our west like that, this time of year in the great lakes, we're on the warm side of the storm. it's milder and we get the rainy side. tomorrow morning during the commute, maybe there are a few raindrops by the tail end of the morning commute especially

we have new details tonight in the kidnapping and brutal murder of a 13-year-old girl in virginia. authorities there say a student at virginia tech now charged with this heinous crime stabbed and killed nicole, the same day she disappeared last wednesday. why they did this, that remains the big mystery. >> reporter: the mother of 13-year-old nicole lovell, nicknamed coley, speaking publicly for the first time since her daughter was killed. >> nicole was a very lovable person. nicole touchdown many people throughout her short life. >> reporter: and now we're learning more about how lovell's life came to an end.

naishz of the cause of -- de-termination of the cause of death is stabbing. >> reporter: she's now facing a new charge, accessory before the fact in premeditated murder. the attorney said the murder occurred last wednesday, the same day nicole's parents believed she climbed out of her bedroom window. weeks said she battled non-hodgkins lymphoma at 4, and later mrsa. >> we knew she only had 1% chance of survival. >> reporter: challenges continued in her teenage years. she said her daughter was bullied and thinks she met david eisenhauer online. eisenhauer and keepers both hail from the same county. now both are in jail without bond.

there's a huge and scary development tonight involving the zika virus. >> a patient out in texas getting the virus through sexual conduct. medical experts have been worried about this possibility and now it has happened. >> eyewitness news reporter shirleen allicot is here with the new details. >> you know this is a very frightening find and truly expands the awareness measures that now need to be taken. this is about a lot more than protecting yourself from a mosquito bite. >> reporter: it's an unprecedented find, health officials in dallas confirming the first case of zika virus acquired through sexual transmission. state health officials releasing this statement, saying the find increases our awareness campaign in educating the public about protecting themselves and others. the patient reportedly had sexual contact with another person who recently returned from venezuela where zika is present. this kind of

>> there's at least one report of sexual transmission of zika virus. if it happens, it's probably not real common but it has been described for the most part most of the time it's going to be transmitted from person to person by a mosquito bite. >> reporter: there are currently no reports of the virus being locally transmitted by mosquitos in dallas county. however, health officials said it could happen eventually. for now the threat is low. the world health organization has said the virus linked to severe birth defects centered in brazil has been spreading rapidly in the americas and could affect 4 million people. in six months in the olympics opening ceremonies, the olympic committee is trying to quell fears. >> the athletes should come to the olympic games and most probably they're not at risk. >> as for a vaccine, a company

a sit-in planned by the family of ramarley graham, the teenager shot and killed by a new york cop four years ago tonight. the officer believed graham had a gun but a weapon was never found and a grand jury failed to indict the officer. now the family wants justice. eyewitness news reporter n.j. burkett at the u.s. attorney's office in manhattan with the story. >> after four years the family says this is what it's come to. an overnight sit-in outside the u.s. attorney's office here in manhattan. ramarley graham's parents, you can see them here gathered with supporters, they say they're determined to get answers, by taking this case directly to their doorstep. >> we need justice and we need it to start now. no more prolonging this case. enough is enough. >> reporter: ramarley graham's parents say it's an outrage that four years after the death of their son, the u.s. justice department has yet to hold anyone accountable.

are appealing directly tonight to the u.s. attorney. >> let's get moving. you had the case for two years. it don't take two years to investigate a case. >> reporter: ramarley graham was 18 years old, gunned down by a new york city police officer inside his own home. officers claim they followed him in the apparently mistaken belief that graham was carrying a gun and opened fire when he refused commands to show his hand. but graham's family and their many supporters insist that officers overreacted and that ramarley graham posed no threat to anybody. u.s. attorney has refused comment. and his last public statement was issued a year and a half ago. a federal civil rights investigation should be conducted confidentially, said the u.s. attorney, and above all, a proper investigation must be

before a judge in sanford today. she applied for an alcoholic counseling program. if she's accepted and completes the course, the charge could be dismissed. police say she backed her suv in to another car on an i-95 exit ramp in greenwich. the new york state senate voting tonight to legalize mixed martial arts for the seventh year in a row. the state athletic commission would control mma. many fighters train at gyms around the state. the next batch of hamilton tickets on sale today but some may find they immediately sell out and face value tickets are awfully hard to find. new york's attorney general released a report saying the computer programs will snag tickets faster than most of us can. those tickets go to brokers and they get a huge markup. on the plus side the digital lottery is back and has got some improvements and gives more people a chance to get the $10 tickets.

a loud bang followed by a fire after a take-off that left a hole inside of the plane. pilots were able to make an emergency landing. the airbus a321 was evacuated. ome -- only a few injuries. a police officer says he found a body that may have come from that plane. some people think there's an east side/west side rivalry in manhattan. it might also involve bedbugs. a new study tracing the pests through the subway stations in new york city and scientists found bedbugs on the east side and west side, they're genetically different. why does that matter? learning about their dna helps develop better insecticides. emotions overflowed at an airport in upstate new york when a mother was reunited with a daughter she had not seen in 82 years. lena pierce gave birth to a baby girl. she was just 14 years.

we're back with breaking news. this is in suffolk county. a murder investigation is underway after a man's body was found in the words. >> kristin thorne at the scene. >> plest -- police tell me here this is indeed a homicide, that a man's body was found in this wooded area earlier today. they say he had suffered head injuries. his body was just taken out of the woods here about 30 minutes ago. i want to show you video we got from newscopter7 when we first heard about this. police say two kids

[ laughter ] >> i'm going to go with you instead of the groundhogs. >> i appreciate it. the sunset, the gift that keeps on giving. so pretty with this little slither, fiery red orange along the sunset. i told you about that. we have mainly clear skies. i'm going to go to the weather wall right now and we're going to talk about a forecast that's going to be really rainy by this time tomorrow. right now our clouds are going to be increasing and at this point bill and diane are not really loving the forecast. there's that little sliver we talked about, temperatures at 48. partly cloudy skies and the winds are calm. by this time tomorrow, 30 to 40-mile-per-hour gusts. clouds will be increasing. overall pleasant evening because the blanket of cloud cover. our temperatures won't drop too much overnight. a rain drop by morning would be between new york city north and west.

start, you beat the rain. it is lightly raining through the midday, probably more than light if you go north and west. now the winds are picking up through the day. gusts over 30 if not 40 miles per hour later in the day. heaviest rain between the evening commute. we're talking rain, 40-mile-per-hour gusts, maybe record highs as temperatures try to climb above 60 degrees. we're on the warm side of this storm. the snowy part is going to the north and west and those are the clouds making for the very pretty sunset. clouds are thickening up. first raindrops coming in to northern new jersey. hudson valley. see how it might be raining a little heavier at that point. look how the numbers area-wide are around 60. first part of tomorrow night, it's a good soaking. then the rain probably lingers. the front is probably slow to leave the scene. i think rain could linger in to the wee hours of the morning. i think by daybreak thursday, clouds, sprinkle on the east end of long island. warmest numbers probably in the morning. then

40s the rest of the day. we should see breaks in the clouds especially west of new york city, colder at night. on friday that front is still a thorn in our side. it's sitting just offshore. i can see how the coast is a little bit cloudier. partly cloudy skies. closer to norm al. the weekend looks nice. i bumped up sunday's high because a front is coming in slower. i could see saturday at 50. then it's that tuesday time period because i think we're going to have a jet stream that's very favorable for a couple coastal threats next week and one of those will probably be snow. we'll be watching that. i think in the tuesday time period we'll have the threat of snowfall and might be one after that. it's getting active after this mild week. >> finally a winter before the groundhogs say spring. >> just thrown off today. all three of them. >> you were not. first comes crawling, then some wobbling, then walking, and then for 14-month-old sloan henderson, that would be

people need to hand over their dna. long island reporter kristin thorne rode along with officers as they searched for samples. >> reporter: these nassau county police officers are looking for people who may not want to be found. they're trying to track down those who owe their dna to nassau county police. there are about 1300 people who haven't done so. >> many people don't want to give it because they know they've committed other crimes and there's a possibility the dna may have been left behind. >> reporter: then there's people who have committed smaller crimes, dwi, insurance fraud, and shoplifting, who don't realize they actually owe dna. like this woman who police tracked down in her neighborhood in east meadow. they took her dna while she was in her car. they can do that because it's quite a simple process which police demonstrated to us. >> we'll have the person remove the swab themselves. we'll then explain they have to place the
