picture of franklin salgado. this is the suspect who opened fire on police then turned the weapon on himself. police have not given us a motive for why he allegedly attacked these officers. as you can see coming back to a live picture in the melrose houses, the investigation is still getting underway. they'll be here all night. the good news, the incredibly good news for the new york police department, those two police officers are expected to survive. we're live in the melrose section of the bronx tonight, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. from the scene of the shooting we go to lincoln hospital where the injured officers are recovering. eyewitness news reporter carolina leid >> both of these officers are in stable condition here at lincoln hospital. we're told by police officials that they are alert and talking. take a live look. just outside the emergency room here. hours later you can still see they're

giving them their support. >> reporter: dozens of police officers crowded the lobby and sidewalk outside lincoln hospital supporting their fellow officers and waiting for updates on their conditions. here's what we know. the male officer's face was grazed by a bullet. the female officer was shot in the torso. both suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. the rookie cops have been on the job for two years, assigned to the housing bureau doing a routine vertical patrol tonight. >> thank god so far in both cases their condition is good. we have more that has to play out this evening. they're getting very fine care here at lincoln hospital. i want to thank everyone at lincoln hospital. i'm pleased to say both officers have been alert and communicating. so we're praying for the best here. >> one of the officers' families are here at lincoln hospital.

hour ago they're waiting for the other officer's family to arrive. they're also rushing carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news. meanwhile, a swarm of police and a lockdown in the neighborhood when the shots rang out and the cops tried to figure out what happened. eyewitness news reporter lucy yang with that part of our coverage. she's at the scene for us. >> we have an army of police officers out here and a very active crime scene behind me after a routine patrol at the melrose public houses ends with two young officers shot. there's heavy police presence out here, both in the air and on the ground as officials swarmed in to the area tonight. police dogs were brought in in case they needed to track other suspects. we have lots of lights and sirens in this area as a large swath of this neighborhood has now been closed to traffic so that investigators can gather evidence and try and put together a narrative for tonight's shooting.

if they happen during this newscast. the latest overnight going up early at 4 a.m. now to the weather. rain is already moving in and meteorologist lee goldberg is tracking the snow that's coming right behind. >> the timing not at all convenient and this snow could cause problems for the morning commute. the salt piles are ready at the sanitation yard, this to help keep the roads clear and in brookhaven on long island, crews getting ready for the incoming snow. >> meteorologist lee goldberg is at the weather wall with when this snow will arrive. >> suffolk county, long island upgraded to a winter storm warning. sleet is already mixing in with rainfall across the area. cold air above mixing in. the changeover is underway. as much as 8 inches can snow in some of the heavier bands east of new york city. camera has been bouncing a little bit more. now the numbers are dropping. we're in the low and middle 40s.

that's the air that's coming in that will make the change over. there's your winter storm warning in suffolk and winter weather advisory for much of the area. there's the rain now, steadier south and east. lighter north and west but i point out mixing happening in putnam and orange county right now. there's the low that brings the heavy rain that changes over to snow overnight. it happens really between 2:00 and 4:00 in the morning. the scene totally changes around then. get out the door early tomorrow. and you can beat some of the snow sticking which happens after 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning. the height around the heart of the morning commute. pulling out during the late morning hours. so rain to wet snow after midnight. heaviest snow from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. slushy roads develop toward dawn and even snow covered roads. parts of monmouth and ocean counties. even parts of westchester and fairfield county.

officers shot in the bronx. shannon sohn is in newscopter7 to give us a look at the scene. >> it is quite a scene here. you can see that east 156th street still alive with police activity, mobile command units as well as crime scene units remain here and although it has calmed down since the shooting of the two officers happened about 8:30 this evening, we do want to show you right here this is the building we've been watching police officers come in and out of, obviously where the shooting happened and if we bring you down to street level, you can see all the police officers, literally dozens of them, still there. we even have police aviation up overhead with search lights through the area. it's going to be a long night here in the bronx. reporting live over melrose, shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. meanwhile, more breaking news, this time in manhattan. a man was arrested after crashing a drone in to that building, the empire state.

40th floor. police say 27 27-year-old sean reynolds was driving the drone. a woman who lost her life savings in the collapse of bernie madoff's ponzi scheme explains why she now speaks with the disgraced stock broker. she says she speaks with madoff regularly, sometimes a couple times a week. she says madoff actually reached out to her because he saw she was representing a large number of victims. >> he has in fact been quite helpful. he views me as a representative of the victims. and he has been very helpful. >> she says she's never met madoff in person. the two only speak over the phone. she says because of their conversations, she's been able to pursue certain claims. he's already reviled for hiking drug prices exponentially.

valley and we'll get even colder. by 8:00 in the morning, peak time. north wind 15 to 30 miles per hour. sun is coming out just after lunchtime and the evening commute will be a lot easier. this is putnam county. just got a tweet from there saying could we be a little higher as well? i'll show you the snow bands. near caramel and brewster, a little mixing going there already. it's very light. rain getting steadier along the coast. coming up the coast our low is down here off the carolinas and you can see how right here is where we'll see the cut-off in the rain-snow. watch what happens here, between 2:00 and 4:00 in the morning is when we have the big changeover happening. 4:00, 5 :00 in the morning, roadways should just be wet. things start to deteriorate. an early start will really help you. by the time we get the sunrise, we're in the peak storm. banding heavy from the city

this will be winding down late morning and certainly pulling out in the afternoon, giving way to afternoon sun. so we have 3 to 6 inches from the city eastward, monmouth and ocean county. i did 3 to 6 inch band in parts of the hudson valley a little bit more because i think some extra bands can get in here. the other area may be parts of middlesex and somerset county. otherwise we get in to northern most new jersey, 1 to 3 inches and a coating to an inch to the north. i think a good amount to the city is about a 3, 4-inch amount but we could see 5s and 6s. it's that close. wet snow and wind. low visibilities at sunrise. slushy roads, just getting worse as we go through the commute. much easier for the evening commute although later tomorrow night watch out for icy roads. as we go through the weekend we've got icy conditions saturday morning. otherwise more melting over the weekend. as we look in to next week we'll miss a big storm

the fight against the zika virus. health officials in brazil confirm two people contracted the virus through blood transfusions. the red cross is now asking travelers to zika outbreak zones to wait to donate blood for 28 days. the virus could also be sexually transmitted but primarily spread through mosquito bites. scientists believe they found a new way to improve circulatory health in pregnant women and their babies. they studied women who ate just a bite of chocolate for 12 weeks. all the women and their babies found notable improvements in blood flow compared to the general population. and they were much happier people as well. rob powers up next with sports. >> who could stop with one bite? knicks game started out bad. it got worse. then it got better. but how'd it end? we'll let you know how a game
