we have one person trapped in a car at the moment. >> the crane was doing work on the roof of 60 hudson street and ironically crews were working to secure it during this morning's high winds when it simply gave way for reasons that are still under investigation. >> it's a very painful day, i'm not going to minimize what's happened here. we have to figure out what happened. we have to make sure it doesn't happen again in the future. >> the wreckage here is simply extraordinary, blocks of worth street now swallowed by this massive accident. no workers were injured but three others were hurt and two remain in the hospital, including a 73-year-old man who was inside a car that was struck but amazingly he only suffered a laceration to his head. >> it was something of a miracle that there wasn't more impact and thank god that the impact on people wasn't worse because this is an area that normally would have had a lot of people around it. >> this footage shows how a counter weight connected to the crane slammed into a nearby building literally landing on

between gas leaks and street closures residents here were rattled to say the least. >> it was just a loud bang and you felt the ground shake under your feet. >> there are more than 400 cranes now operating across york city and mayor de blasio this morning ordered all of them to be immediately secured. >> it was just a big loud crash. i had assumed it was the snow thunder that everyone was talking about today. >> reporter: now the mayor did say this is the worst crane accident in new york city since 2008. he said this actually could have been a lot worse. consider the hour of the day and the weather, we should also note that the crane operator is cooperating with authorities, and this crane now laying on its side behind me had just been inspected yesterday morning. reporting live in tribeca, rob nelson, channel 7 eyewitness news. rob, the massive crane which had a 565-foot boom drew a lot of attention. a woman working in the area shot this video yesterday.

crane towered over the area before it slammed into the ground this morning. >> definitely neighbors keeping an eye on it. eyewitness news obtained video showing the moment the crane went down. this video taken by a construction worker from across the street. we were the first to show it to you on the air. lauren glassberg is live. she is a block away from the scene with that part of our coverage. >> reporter: if you take a look right over my shoulder, you can see the crane. it's really the midsection known as the knuckle that is in the intersection of worth and west broadway. the view impressive from the ground, but even more astonishing from up above, there are those who saw it coming down. >> we're on the 30th floor now. >> from the 30th floor of 56 leonard street, a residential building that's going up, glen zito had a bird's eye view of the crane on its way down. >> there it goes. he's moving fast now, he's dropping it really quick. >> from slow motion to high

clipping buildings and pummeling cars. zito was with chris andropolis initially on the 46th floor but because of wind they were told to stop working and head down. >> as we were walking down, we stopped on one of the floors and we watched this crane was swaying in the wind, and we noticed that they decided to start lowering it down across the street. as we were videoing it it actually lost momentum as it was coming down. it gained speed, and then it flipped over. also clean also shot the rapid descent. the second attempt coming down it got away from them i guess. yesterday that crane tall and imposing, today crumpled and deadly. >> this was definitely not bound to happen. this was a tragedy. >> reporter: those construction workers feeling very blessed tonight that that crane went straight down on worth street and didn't go sideways or

they all believe this could have been far worse. live in tribeca, lauren glassberg channel 7 eyewitness news. thank you. family and friends tonight mourning the loss of 38-year- old david wichs. the wall street trader was standing near a parked car and took a direct hit from the crane. eyewitness news reporter cefaan kim with more from the upper west side where wichs lived. >> all afternoon friends, family, and co-workers have been coming in and out of david wichs upper west side home to pay their respects. loved ones asking for privacy as they try to cope with what happened. >> the parents of david wichs arriving at their son's upper west side home this afternoon escorted by police to join their daughter-in-law to mourn the sudden loss of the 38-year- old. family members were visibly upset and declined to speak with us. police say wichs was walking down worth street when he was crushed by a collapsing crane.

we've lost a life. >> wich's sister-in-law told the associated press he was born in prague and immigrated to the u.s. as a teenager. she calls him the most brilliant person she knew with a degree in mathematics he worked at tower research capital. she says he took every opportunity he could and worked tirelessly to succeed in life. two others were also injured, 45-year-old dawn kojima from new jersey injured her leg after it was struck by debris. 73-year-old thomas o'brien suffered a laceration to his head struck by the crane as he was in his car. both are expected to survive. the mayor says there could have been more injuries and fatalities if not for precautions taken by the construction crew. >> a crew was directing people away from worth street as the crane was being lowered, so that crew and those construction workers who through the normal course of

lowering the crane were in fact keeping people away from the site. >> reporter: the question now is how was wichs walking down that street if it was closed off. a full investigation is underway. reporting live on the upper west side cefaan kim channel eyewitness news. >> roads in the area of the collapse site remain closed. worth street is closed from church street to hudson and west broadway is closed from canal to thomas. over the the next couple of days the area around the scene from canal to chambers, hudson to broadway will see numerous disruptions. heather o'rourke has more. >> we're going to have worth street closed down between hudson and church streets until further notice and the streets between canal and chamber streets between hudson and church streets are going to also be closed down. now this could affect traffic coming to and from the holland tunnel because of the closures below canal street and in addition to this, you will also find that the manhattan bridge

shooting the officers in a stairwell. eyewitness news reporter darla miles is live in melrose with more for us. darla. >> reporter: well, diana, we have just learned that this is a drug deal gone bad. police say that those two officers were on vertical patrol, that they walked into the stairwell where the suspect malik chavez was there to buy marijuana but they say he brought guns on him because he wanted to rob the two men. >> officer patrick espuet posed for this picture with bill brat ton and james o'neil before going home from lincoln hospital friday afternoon less than 24 hours after being grazed in the head with a bullet. >> we definitely saw the guy who got shot in his head, head wrapped, covered, we had one that was like sitting up. it might have been the other officer as well. >> heard bang bang bang, stop, bang bang bang, stop, bang bang bang. >> nine shots. >> yes. >> this witness who does not

the 7th floor of melrose houses and feet away from where police say 23-year-old malik chavez opened fire on officer espuet and officer cruz, both two-year veterans assigned to housing. >> it was 8:00, we were finished eating sitting in the room and then we heard the shooting. then somebody screamed call 9-1- 1. then we called 9-1-1. and then they said officer down and all the cops came. >> they found these two guns. a shotgun and a 32 caliber handgun which they say he used to open fire thursday evening around 8. they say he then turned the gun on himself, this after the two officers on vertical patrols found him drinking in the stairwell and asked him for id. >> we're like looking right at the building that the cops were swarming in and they're bringing people out and just trying to investigate. >> now we know there is some controvert regarding vertical patrols in housing development. some say police officers are too aggressive. we'll have more on that debate

news at 6. reporting live in the melrose section of the bronx, darla miles channel 7 eyewitness news. >> okay. thank you. the other big story today is the weather, and the snow has stopped falling, but some people may still have the slippery ride home tonight. >> meteorologist lee goldberg is in the weather center. >> storm will still have an impact into your weekend, the last of the flakes leaving the east end of long island right now. we've got a fresh couple inches in central park and the george washington bridge right now. a dry ride but may be icy later. we're at 38 now and we're dropping below freezing. your post storm problems, downed trees and power lines with the heavy wet snow, the refreezing overnight and the falling clumps of snow around the city, and then we have more snow that we may add to the forecast headed into next week. we'll have that in accuweather coming up next. >> thank you lee. this was no blizzard, but it still delivered a mess to parts of long island. spots. >> and today's crane collapse

we want to show you the man police say attacked a woman with a sharp object at a subway station. police released this video overnight. they say the man struck the woman in her arm possibly with needle as she was waiting for the r train at time square. this happened on wednesday. the victim says she did feel a pinch in her arm and then noticed she had a puncture wound when she got home. the tri-state waking up to heavy snow. it's not like the blizzard we saw two weeks ago, enough to close schools and make it a mess getting around. many of you shared images of what you saw, posted them on social media with the hashtag abc7ny.

burkett is along the l.i.e. with how they're faring tonight. n. j. >> reporter: that's right, along the l.i.e. where the snow that buried the morning rush hour is now long gone. we did a lot of driving today. we posted some videos on my facebook page. it was great reading people's comments. we got exactly the storm that was forecast so why were so many people caught offguard? >> cars ended up where cars didn't belong this morning, and taxis were spinning their wheels in ronkonkoma as the storm covered the morning rush hour in a heavy, wet, planning et of snow. at one point virtually every road was covered and beneath the snow was a thin, dangerous coating of ice from wet pavement that froze over after the temperature dropped overnight. this tree limb fell across route 108 in cold spring harbor seconds before it. on the long island expressway

through the storm crawling in some places as visibility dropped and the snow continued to pile up. even all wheel drive vehicles had trouble, juan pena slid off an expressway onramp in his infinity after dropping off his children at day care. >> i was going to the entrance of the expressway, and my car kind of slid and did a 180. i tried to maneuver and it fell into the ditch. >> by midday, the storm had moved on leaving the north shore of long island looking like a village in switzerland. through it all, the long island railroad ran a normal weekday schedule with delays averaging just 15 minutes. she had to skip work but she's getting an early start on her weekend heading to bryant park. >> i was sitting home, moping around and then the sun was out, and i was like i was going to go anyway. >> reporter: sound like a great idea. i want to show you the kind of

this is heavy, wet snow that crunches when you step on it. it's the kind of snow, of course that brings down power lines, through the storms some 47,000 homes and businesses lost power. i'm now told that 80% of those homes and businesses are back online tonight. live tonight in dix hills long island, n. j. burkett channel 7y eye. thank you. and this winter storm giving much of new england its first taste of real winter, a lot of heavy snowfall in the boston area. that made driving conditions treacherous. more than 150,000 homes lost power. many schools were closed in massachusetts, new hampshire and rhode island. >> that's your hometown. >> yeah, my brother was plowing today. >> was he. >> yeah, he was plows today. >> woke up and it was so beautiful outside. >> it was incredibly picturesque if you didn't have to fight it with the heavy wet snow stuck to the trees, it was ibragim -- it was incredible. >> so now the out.

deal with. a nice weekend to catch your breath with quiet weather. awesome shot again, almost every time you look at either our cameras or our viewer pictures on abc7ny it's just been absolutely gorgeous. you look at this bouncing cam remarks it's a gusty wind for the next few hours. we have gusts near 30 miles an hour. beware of that. that's going to blow some of the heavy wet snow clumps off trees and buildings and you have to be careful and keep your head up. the pressure is on the rise. we're recovering here and the high today 41. we look at places on long island and in suffolk county specially and near a foot of snow in st. james. i got a tweet from east north port saying around 9 inches of snow and hauppauge over a foot of snow. jfk4 1/2 inches. the park came in with 2 1/2 inches. it's difficult for it to measure.

ridge wood and harrison new jersey coming in at 3 inches. connecticut did very well, anywhere from on average 4 to 9 inches, lower amounts in northern fairfield county. there's your official in central park, the average high 40 degrees will be above that this weekend, and that will be our last stretch for a while. 32 ronkonkoma, of course the snow pack's going to keep it chilly the. now with the sun going down we're going to have icy roads. same thing in the suburbs, 38 newark, same in wrightstown. clearing overnight, sunshine in the morning. early risers watch out for icy spots. then we're above freezing and mid-he mid-40s during the afternoon hours. we started out with the rain and from northwest to southeast we changed from blue to white. the island got pummeled with very heavy snowfall at heavy rates. that storm is moving away. it's east of cape cod. here's the winds coming with it. the farther we get away with

hours into the evening and this high will get closer and the winds will get lighter and we'll clear the sky. that will allow temperatures to drop off and just perpetuate the icy conditions. like i said, we get to catch our breath over the weekend with that high pressure. then we'll look to these two systems, one coming out of the rockies. one getting into the pacific northwest. this will dive into the lakes. that's going to help to be our cold air source for all next week. it's almost like shark infested waters here. the storms are circling us next week. one of them is likely to give us a decent snowfall. meanwhile in the short-term we know we're clearing out and it's getting cold tonight. tomorrow only in the 20s and low 30s to start, but a nice recovery in the afternoon with sunshine, a few patchy clouds. partly sunny in the afternoon, light wind all day which is good news and temperatures in the mid-40s. 30 tonight diminishing winds. some icy roads. tomorrow a pair of 4s. sunny, partly cloudy very nice. tomorrow same idea, patchy

official and one of governor christie's former aides charged in the bridgegate case are getting a second chance. the judge allowed bill baroni and kelly -- funded report ab solved governor christie of blame. baroni and kelly contend documents are relevant to their defense. british and swedish officials are rejecting a report from a u. n. panel about wikileaks founder julia assad. yan assad. assange has been living in london since 2012 to avoid extradition to sweden for questioning. assange told reporters that the report completely vindicates him. a scary scene in dublin ireland where a gunman disagreed as police opened fire at a hotel. one man was killed and two others hurt in the attack. it happened at a weigh in for a

fans fled the hotel as the gunman started firing. authorities believe the attack may have been orchestrated by ireland east top cocaine smuggling gang. january's job report a good example of good news, bad news, they added jobs last month, a big decline from recent months and it is below expectations. the unemployment rate fell to 4.9%, and that's the first time it's been that low in eight years. average wages also rose 2.5%. president obama said the jobs situation defies republican's persistent claims that the u.s. economy is a disaster. >> the united states of america right now has the strongest, most durable economy in the world. i know that's still inconvenient for republican stump speeches as their doom and desierra tour plays in new hampshire.

were losses today. energy stocks took a hit after the price of crude oil slipped again. the dow fell 211 points closing at 16204, the nasdaq plunged 146 points and the s&p 500 dropped 35 points. two men are speaking out about a road rage incident caught on camera. a biker posted the dramatic video online and it has since gone viral. the biker says it all started when a rider in his group drove offroad for a moment in las vegas and kicked up some dirt. the driver of a red pickup truck says the bikers were driving recklessly and when one approached his car, he says he was justified to draw his weapon. >> i wasn't taking any chances. he knocked on the window, i was ready for him. >> i didn't really think that it was going to escalate to what it did, and that's literally the first time that i've gone up to somebody's window and traffic like that, and it will be the last.

snow squalls when it fell onto a street and crushed cars and killed a wall street worker and injured three other people. the man who died has been identified as david wick, a 38- year-old man who worked at a computerized trading firm. he was born in prague and came to the u.s. as a teenager and graduated from harvard. >> the accident happened as workers were trying to secure the crane. they had lowered the boom, extended to 565 feet the day beforement because -- before. because the crane was being lowered, workers were directing people away from the street below. potentially saving lives. >> this is a sad incident. we have lost a life. if you go out there on the street as i did and see what happened here, thank god it was not worse. >> thank goodness indeed. this is a live look at the scene in tribeca. no workers were hurt. nearby buildings were evacuated

and utility officials checked and rechecked for gas leaks. >> in the middle of the chaos, and the collapse, there was a heartwarming tale, and we were so glad to be able to learn about this pause there was a determined bride and a stranger who managed to help her. >> an fdny chaplain rushed to the aid of the bride standing in the crowd. >> reporter: sade, right now, family members and close friends are inside this brooklyn restaurant for the wedding reception. they say they are just so thankful to be together right now considering what happened earlier today. shortly after the train collapse, wearing nothing but her wedding gown, trying her guest to get to the courthouse in time to say i do. she was with her mother and sister at a tribeca hair salon getting ready for the big day when they felt what they

>> very quickly everyone in the salon was a little nervous. people were injured and died, and it was terrifying and we were very sad. >> reporter: emergency workers kept everyone inside the building until it was safe to leave. a chaplain helped her get to the ceremony she was late for. >> while the chaplain was walking me over in the snow and slush and heels. and i said wait a minute, chaplain, you can marry people. >> okay would you mary us. >> reporter: she performed the impromptu ceremony. her husband is very thankful. >> the chaplain was there and was able to turn, even though it was a tragedy, turn it into

the highway and through a neighborhood, exchanging the gunfire that you just heard. the male suspect was shot and killed as he tried to run into a home. >> it occurred so quickly that the residence or the home were taken care of to get them out of the area where the fire fight may have ensued and it occurred very very quickly. >> some of the duo's armed robberies have been caught on surveillance video. the female suspect now faces a string of serious charges including robbery and false imprisonment. the popular nexflix series making a murderer is receiving bomb threats. the sheriff's department it has received dozens of threats since the series went online. a caller mentioned getting justice for steven, an apparent reference to steven avery, the focus o. -- of the documentary series. a search of the department did not turn up anything. the beauty school students

nfl commissioner roger goodell addressed the media at hiss annual super bowl week news conference. questions focused on major issues confronting the nfl. he emphasized the league has made great progress in keeping the players safe on the field, including rule changes and a new helmet. goodell talked about concussions on good morning america. >> the number of concussions went up this year, and they're going to go up and they're going to go down in any season. screenings went up by 108%, and we saw more self-report from the players and teammatesment. >> today the commissioner emphasized the constant need for improvement saying the goal is to get better. >> super bowl this weekend.

. now to the evolving threat of the zika virus, the centers for disease control is scrambling to stem its rapid spread. >> rockland county has its first confirmed case, raising the number of cases in new york state to eleven. eyewitness news reporter, shirlene allicot is in pomona. >> reporter: obviously this is cause for a lot of concern, but our region. it's not mosquito season just yet, so we still have time to arm ourselves. rockland county confirming its first case of the zika virus, a resident who recently traveled to a south american country where zika is present came back sick with the virus. county health officials say the woman who is not pregnant is

>> as far as the patient is concerned, she is not hospitalized. she is being treated symptomically, as there's no actual medication or treatment for this. >> reporter: that makes it eleven confirmed cases in new york so far. the symptoms are typically mild but the concerns are what it can do to unborn babies. while the cdc tries to tie down the link, it's enough to cause alarm. on tuesday, dallas health officials found its first case through sex. through urine and saliva. >> if you have it in your blood, it ends up in other body fluids, but the main way this mosquitoes. >> reporter: and while it's still too cold for mosquitoes to breed in our region, a cousin of the mosquito spreading the virus has been monitoring it closely.
