appointments available now. new at 11:00, a police officer in new jersey is in critical condition after a driver runs him over while trying to escape. also, a developing story, north korea launches a ballistic missile. tonight we have reaction from the government about this rocket test. good evening i'm joe torres. >> and i'm sandra bookman. we will begin with the massive crane collapse. crews are working to remove the final species of the crane from the streets in tribeca. once the pieces are cleared, the investigation into what exactly happened can get underway. >> stephon kin has the latest.

seconds for the crane to come crashing down here, but getting it out of here will take so much longer because it had to be cut up into several dozen pieces to be hauled out of here, and it had to be done without compromising its integrity to be examined for clues. >> reporter: piece by piece, the collapsed crane is being hauled away to tribeca, taken to an undisclosed location so investigators can look at it, hoping it will show what happened here and why. the 565-foot steel structure carefully cut into 35 pieces, and the goal is to have it all removed by sunday morning. >> the main point is to cut them in locations that doesn't compromise the forensic engineering value. >> reporter: the computer's recorded movement has also been moved. the expectation it will contribute significant information to the inspectors, but it may only provide basic insight. >> i don't want to set expectations too high that it

space. the u.s. and japan have requested an emergency meeting of the u.n. security sunday morning saying they violated the councilman on ballistic missile launches. >> reporter: a police officer in new jersey is lucky to be alive after he was run over. the officer in dover was checking out a jeep when it suddenly drove forward, striking him and running him over. responding officers arrested the driver and passenger inside, and the officer suffered a concussion and broken bones. he is in critical but stable condition tonight. firefighters arrive at rowhouses here at 7:50 p.m. it's believed the 76-year-old man who lived there died before the fire started. >> it appears he could have been deceased for 5 hours prior to the fire.

building undergoing demolition. the man was working on scaffolding outside of the 20th floor of a building in midtown this afternoon when a large chunk of concrete came crashing down, and it hit him on the head and knocked him unconscious, and rescue teams had to use a complex system of pulleys in order to get the man on the ground. >> we put him in a stretcher and lowered the stretcher down an interior shaftway. the stretcher we had to stabilize him in and get him down would not fit in the construction elevator. >> he was rushed to the hospital, it man, and tonight, investigators from the department of buildings are on the scene investigating the accident. a close call when a pilot lost control and a helicopter tipped over in new jersey. the faa says the pilot was practicing landings this afternoon at linden airport when the helicopter tipped over. two people were on board. one suffered a leg injury. the faa is now investigating.

and an investigation is underway in westchester county after radio active contaminated water leaked into ground water at the indian nuclear point facility in buchanan. the governor says the alarming levels were found in three monitoring wells yesterday. the level in one well increased 65,000%, however, the officials say the contaminated water has not moved offsight, sight, and -- offsite, and there's no public threat. we have mild weather to finish off the weekend tomorrow, but we have some real wintery weather in store for the start of the week, and meteorologist jeff smith is here now with the first look at the accuweather forecast. jeff? >> reporter: if you get a couple of mild days this time of the year, the wintery weather is probably around the corner. 37 right now, clear skies, and the wind coming in from the southwest. temperatures not quite dropping down into freezing. some areas will get down into

this morning in baltimore, and it rams into nearby cars, and then it reversing wildly on to the sidewalk. woman. she was lodged beneath the van's tires when it barreled down the sidewalk and almost crashed into another vehicle. the victim is in the hospital with serious injuries, and the orlando red. he's in custody, and it's unclear what sparked the incident, but police believe red was under the influence of alcohol. >> police are looking for a suspect after a woman was raped in an apartment building in the bronx. the man followed the woman to east university heights at 9:45 last night. the man raped the woman in the elevator, stealing cell phones, and then he continued to sexually assault her in the stairwell. the victim was treated at the hospital. in the bronx, another slashing on the subway this

station, and it was just before 4:00 this morning. police say a 32-year-old man was attacked after getting into a dispute with two other men, and one of those men slashed the victim's cheek as he left the station. the two suspects fled, and the victim got stitches at the hospital. andrew cuomo says he's ending gay conversion therapy in new york state. tonight he got an award from a gay prominents rights group. cuomo said he wants to stop therapists from trying to stop young people's sexual orientations. >> we rejected fundamentally the absurd notion that being gay is a psychiatric disorder and we have ended conversion therapy in the state of new york and i am proud. >> you heard it, the governor using the state's power to

we all know finding just the right parking spot always takes a little luck. unfortunately for a dozen car owners parked on a frozen lake, their luck ran out. the cars were parked on lake geneva in wisconsin while their drivers attended the nearby winter fest. fortunately no one was inside of the vehicles. now police have the tough job of fishing the vehicles out of the lake. >> oh, wow! >> the ice looked a little thin. >> not a good winter fest. >> they got fools, huh, jeff? >> oh, yeah. if you were delivering the accuweather forecast, they would have known. >> oh, yeah, they would have certainly known to keep their cars off the ice. >> on the pavement. >> and they would have known that snow was going to be in the new york area. >> i was delaying getting to that actually. >> reporter: i know you were.

we have several opportunities of snow coming up during the upcoming week. one coming in on monday, and the other tuesday into wednesday. i think between the two, we will have some accumulation between the area. we go outside to check out what is going on. beautiful look over the empire state building. the fireworks display earlier this is lit up for the same event for the chinese lunar new year tonight. 347 today, the high up to 40 after the morning slow of 30. the southwest wind around 7. right on target for this time of the year. nice and mild tomorrow, sunshine, with 40-degree temperatures. mid- to upper 40s for new york city, and then we are stalking about intermittent snow from a couple of different systems. one on monday should stay

and then there's the possibility of minor coastal flooding monday into tuesday. the tides will be higher than average. you can get splashover with the high tide. 20s north and west of the city. case in point, monticello, down the shore to toms river. 28degrees, and partly udelson cloudy skies through tomorrow. and then we watch this system developing off jacksonville, florida it will move out to sea, but the flank of the storm will affect long island, back to new york city during the day on monday and quiet during the day tomorrow. and here's the system. by 7:00 a.m. monday, is snow on the island, down the jersey shore, and it may try to extend to the west. just for monday's storm, a 1-3- inch accumulating snowfall. long island into south western

fraternity has now been placed on temporary suspension, and he is the president of his frat. he says he would like to open a restaurant some day and learn more about real estate, and his father owns the popular music club, webster hall in the east village in this youtube post, he boasts of $300,000 a day while running the bar in his father's club. tonight his ambitions and school wordwork is on hold while the criminal charges take center stage. his attorney said "his innocence will be established at the proper time and place, which is in the courts not in the media." we reached out to the club for comment, and so far no response from webster hall. ballenger is due back in court on tuesday morning." lucy yang, channel 7 eyewitness news. a big gang bust in bridgeport, and police found drugs, scales, and thousands of dollars in cash and stolen guns at a vacant house, and

authorities say gang members were using it to give addicts crack in exchange for stolen items, including dirt bikes and gardening equipment. 30-year-old euro walker is due in court on monday. police made an arrest in the stabbing death of a man in the bronx. it was at east 161st street and river avenue, and police say a 43-year-old man was stabbed in the chest and arm, and a 27- year-old man was slashed on his hand, and the victims were taken to the hospital where the older man died. investigators took 40-year-old jesus flores into custody at the scene and charged him with murder. a new jersey man now charged with drunk driving after crashing into a building early this morning. 52-year-old james fenie drove

he smashed through one set of doors, drove down the hallway, barreled outdoors on the other side and kept going. officers pulled him over on route 46 a short time later. new information on the fate of the family-owned store in upper manhattan. their eviction has been halted assisted least for now. the store in hudson heights was to be taken over by a walgreens after its lease expired last year, but after a rally, a petition signing drive and a public hearing, the landlord is postponing the eviction proceedings and instead negotiating an alternative solution. tonight new information about what likely contributed to the fire at the flight 93 national memorial in pennsylvania. discarded smoking material is strongly suspected as the cause of the fire in october 2014, but the investigation failed to determine the actual cause of
