back to port. >> once they got back passengers were tweeting out photos of long lines as people tried to make their way off the ship. >> eyewitness news reporter josh einiger in the bayonne where the ship was docked. he's talking to angry passengers. >> we were there at the mob scene when the passengers made it out of customs. i want to step out of the way and show you how big this ship is. it's the first time since this whole saga began. this is an enormous vessel. you can only imagine if it were a smaller ship, what would have happened when it had gone through that storm. >> reporter: they cheered as the anthem of the seas glided in to the aptly named port liberty. thousands of passengers now liberated to tell their terrifying story. >> i at one point thought i wasn't going to see my family again. >> reporter: last sunday was

vacation became the stuff of nightmares when the world's third largest cruise ship with more than 6,000 people onboard steered directly in to a storm with 125-mile-per-hour winds. >> we were on the third deck so we and there was water coming on our little window and it was pretty scary. >> not only would the boat go up then come smashing down violently, when you were in bed, you fell out of bed. at one point we went all the way over and i looked at my wife and i said it's over. we held hands because we thought it was over. >> reporter: royal caribbean has apologized for, in its words, exposing guests to such extreme weather, a storm the company says was much stronger than forecasted. >> if we end up in a situation like this, something went wrong. we didn't interpret the forecast wrong or there's something. we'll do a complete review of this situation. >> reporter: the company has already made changes to storm avoidance policies and is standing behind the ship's captain, though not a lot of love for him among his

this morning at a deli on staten island. not far, police say, from where he stabbed his girlfriend and three of her children including his own 4-month-old daughter. eyewitness news reporter aj ross with the latest in the westerleigh section. >> a young mom and three little girls viciously attacked by the man who was supposed to love and protect them. tonight we have new exclusive video of 23-year-old michael sykes who police say went on a brutal and senseless killing spree inside this staten island ramada inn. >> reporter: this is new exclusive video of 23-year-old michael sykes entering a nearby staten island deli minutes before police say he went on a killing rampage. in the video he appears to be going about his normal routine but just a short time later investigators say he snapped while visiting his girlfriend, 26-year-old rebecca cutler and her three small girls, ages 2, 1, and four months inside this ramada inn.

>> reporter: panic after they discovered them lying inside a room motionless. 2-year-old miracle was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition as police quickly locked down a perimeter around this property which also serves as a homeless shelter. >> i have a girl and a boy. i can't speak for that. i get chills. >> it's crazy. it's unexplainable. it's a hard situation. >> reporter: as the manhunt for sykes continued and widened, this woman who didn't want to show her face said she saw him on a bus shortly after the incident. >> i just so happened to see him when he was leaving here. i was on my way to work. and i seen him, he was acting regular. >> reporter: 28 other families also being housed at the ramada were immediately relocated. >> if it happened to him, it could happen to somebody else in this hotel. it's better for us to move to another hotel. >> police did recover what they believe to be the murder weapon here at the scene.

we're now below freezing in most spots. 36 in montauk. now 21 in monticello. 8:00 in the morning, 25. gusty breeze. couple of flurries or snow showers around. but the feels like readings are in the teens at that point. gusty winds as well. can be a flurry throughout the day. gusty winds near 30. probably come up just short of the 30-degree mark. meanwhile, clouds coming in again. couple snow showers from newton, new jersey down to about mount olive and there's a cold front, first of two coming in over the weekend. this cold front separates 30s from 20s and teens but the one i'm concerned about is the one plowing south through hudson bay with fierce chill behind it. it's 30 below behind this front. a piece of that air will be headed our way over the weekend. during the day tomorrow, we start out with low and middle 20s. couple snow showers. worse case, there's an isolated dusting around. slippery spots, not widespread. you could have flurries during the day as the wind picks up and 20s will feel like teens.
