right before the deadly carnage. first, they're finally home. damaging winds, making for a vacation from hell. tonight they've returned to new jersey. the ship with thousands onboard slowly making its way tonight back to port. >> once they got back passengers were tweeting out photos of long lines as people tried to make their way off the ship. >> eyewitness news reporter josh einiger in the bayonne where the ship was docked. he's talking to angry passengers. >> we were there at the mob scene when the passengers made it out of customs. i want to step out of the way and show you how big this ship is. it's the first time since this whole saga began. this is an enormous vessel. you can only imagine if it were a smaller ship, what would have happened when it had gone through that storm. >> reporter: they cheered as

to the aptly named port liberty. thousands of passengers now liberated to tell their terrifying story. >> i at one point thought i wasn't going to see my family again. >> reporter: last sunday was the day a peaceful dream vacation became the stuff of nightmares when the world's third largest cruise ship with more than 6,000 people onboard steered directly in to a storm with 125-mile-per-hour winds. >> we were on the third deck so we and there was water coming on our little window and it was pretty scary. >> not only would the boat go up then come smashing down violently, when you were in bed, you fell out of bed. at one point we went all the way over and i looked at my wife and i said it's over. we held hands because we thought it was over. >> reporter: royal caribbean has apologized for, in its words, exposing guests to such extreme weather, a storm the company says was much stronger than forecasted. >> if we end up in a situation like this, something went wrong. we didn't interpret the forecast

94th street and 2nd avenue. investigators found him from a crimestoppers tip. we have exclusive video tonight of a man new york cops say is a brutal killer and he's on the loose. michael sykes captured on video this morning at a deli on staten island. not far, police say, from where he stabbed his girlfriend and three of her children including his own 4-month-old daughter. eyewitness news reporter aj ross with the latest in the westerleigh section. >> a young mom and three little girls viciously attacked by the man who was supposed to love and protect them. tonight we have new exclusive video of 23-year-old michael sykes who police say went on a brutal and senseless killing spree inside this staten island ramada inn. >> reporter: this is new exclusive video of 23-year-old michael sykes entering a nearby staten island deli minutes before police say he went on a killing rampage. in the video he appears to be going about his normal routine but just a short time later investigators say he snapped while visiting his girlfriend,

her three small girls, ages 2, 1, and four months inside this ramada inn. >> it said somebody was stabbing babies. >> reporter: panic after they discovered them lying inside a room motionless. 2-year-old miracle was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition as police quickly locked down a perimeter around this property which also serves as a homeless shelter. >> i have a girl and a boy. i can't speak for that. i get chills. >> it's crazy. it's unexplainable. i can't explain myself. it's a hard situation. >> reporter: as the manhunt for sykes continued and widened, this woman who didn't want to show her face said she saw him on a bus shortly after the incident. >> i just so happened to see him when he was leaving here. i was on my way to work. and i seen him, he was acting regular. >> reporter: 28 other families

33-year-old guo shou is facing weapons charges and reckless endangerment. day three of deliberations happening tomorrow in the manslaughter trial of a new york cop. jurors today asking to handle the gun used by officer peter liang on the night he shot the unarmed akai gurley. it happened in the darkened stairwell in brooklyn in 2014. meanwhile the judge denied a motion by the defense today for a mistrial. alarming news out of westchester county tonight about that leak at the indian point power plant. the level of radioactive contaminated water leaking in to ground water has increased by 80% since an initial report of a leak last week. entergy, which runs the new plant, insisting there's no harm to the public. although critics doubt that claim partly because investigators have yet to pinpoint how the leak happened. get ready for bitter and dangerous cold. it's all headed our way. lee goldberg is tracking it all. >> 11:00, we just fell below freezing and we won't get back there for a while.

new at 11:00, a gun battle at a crowded restaurant leaves two officers dead. police say the shooter opened fire during the lunch rush at panera. he shot one sheriff's deputy then ran outside and shot another one. after the bullets flew, the gunman ran to a mall where he became involved in another shootout but this time he was the one hit with bullets and killed. investigators have not released a motive. we're learning new details about the lawsuit that the department of justice is filing against ferguson.

loretta lynch now saying the residents of ferguson should not have to wait for the city to adopt an agreement about how the police treat poor people and minorities. an agreement was rejected by city council last night. the man on trial for stalking the address of gwyneth paltrow said he just wanted to show her unconditional love and friendship. dante said he sent the star dozens of messages because he hoped she might want to marry testified against him. ms. paltrow breaking down in tears saying she feared for her children's safety. encouraging news about the effectiveness of the ignition systems that lock out drunk drivers. the car locking systems have dropped more than 1.7 million 1999. in 25 states, convicted drunk drivers have to blow in to the device to get a blood alcohol conat the point in -- blood

subways and showed us how you might protect yourself in the moment of an attack. escape to gain safety. meaning eyes, throat, groin, and shins. targets for you to remember. >> you have to do something to get that person away from you. >> you have to remember targets. defend yourself. strike those targets so you can escape to gain safety. >> reporter: escape out a side door or the end of the car. but if you're in between stations, find this emergency call button. >> to alert one of the crew members who will then contact the police. >> reporter: out on the platform where there are more opportunities for you to run and escape, there are other protections in the event of an active shooter. >> you want to use these to your advantage to be able to go from one to the other so you can make it to those stairs and get out of there as soon as possible. >> reporter: most importantly, they suggest you always be aware of your surroundings. being able to spot a potential

[ laughter ] there are some records you want to beat and others you just want to leave alone. >> good call. it's amazing that valentine's day may be the coldest day of the winter. it's going to be real nasty, especially saturday through sunday midday. outside tonight it's not terrible compared to what we're going to have over the weekend. 31 right now. westerly wind at 7, gusting to 20. we managed to get very close to the 40-degree mark. below freezing for the next five days. this should be winter's coldest over the weekend. could break a 100-year-old record as we go in to sunday morning. 20 and falling by day after a morning snow shower or squall on saturday, down to 2 at night, trying to tie a record low and only 19 as we go in to valentine's day. we're now below freezing in most

now 21 in monticello. 8:00 in the morning, 25. gusty breeze. couple of flurries or snow showers around. but the feels like readings are in the teens at that point. gusty winds as well. can be a flurry throughout the day. gusty winds near 30. probably come up just short of the 30-degree mark. meanwhile, clouds coming in again. couple snow showers from newton, new jersey down to about mount olive and there's a cold front, first of two coming in over the weekend. this cold front separates 30s from 20s and teens but the one i'm concerned about is the one plowing south through hudson bay with fierce chill behind it. it's 30 below behind this front. a piece of that air will be headed our way over the weekend. during the day tomorrow, we start out with low and middle 20s. couple snow showers. worse case, there's an isolated dusting around. slippery spots, not widespread. you could have flurries during the day as the wind picks up and 20s will feel like teens. 25 to start the day. wind chills in the teens. only to 29.

throughout the day. couple flurries, clouds and breaks of sunshine. down to 16, wind chill of 5 to 10. that's just the beginning. watch the 7-day accuweather forecast. on friday that's actually kind of a day where we flat line in our temperatures. we don't go down to late friday night. late friday night in to saturday morning i'm afraid there's a snow squall. wind chills later on the day saturday as numbers drop through the day are 10 to 20 below, 25 to 30 below. there's your low on saturday night. if we hit that too on sunday morning that would tie a record high from 1916 that would equal the coldest day we had last winter and the last time we hit zero in new york city is way back in '94. we have a shot at that. wind will be less on sunday. we're trying to get rid of the cold air before a big storm approaches but i do think monday night in to tuesday we may have rain and ice or at least snow and it's going to rain as we climb all the way from the teens
