scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes today at a resort in west texas. the 79-year-old justice was a guest at the see bolo creek ranch a resort region south of marfa near the mexican border. arrived at the ranch yesterday and attended a private party. when he did not appear for breakfast today, a person associated with the ranch went to his room. that's when they found his body. scalia was nominated to the u.s. supreme court in 1986. former president george w. bush released a statement mourning scalia's death saying, he was a towering figure and important judge on our nation's highest court. he brought intellect, good judgment and wit to the bench. and he will be missed by his colleagues and our country. >> stay with eyewitness news and abc news for complete coverage on this breaking story. the passing of supreme court

>> we have team coverage of this art particular assault. we again with meteorologist jeff smith. >> darkness descending on one of the coldest nights in the city. we are on the verge of single digits down to 10 degrees not including the wind chill. let's check the stats. first of all, we have a wind chill warning in effect areas north of new york city. you don't see a wind chill warning issued too often around this. it's in effect for new york city, long island and new jersey through noon tomorrow down to 10 in central park all the way down to 6 degrees in white plains and check out these numbers already well north and west down to 4 below zero for an actual temperature at monticello. you add to that winds which are gusting upwards of 20 and 30 miles per hour across much of the area even up to 40 miles per hour and that is driving wind chills down to 8 park. that's what it feels like. it feels like 24 below zero at monticello. so already dangerously cold

more dangerous as the night goes along. down to 2 for a low. that would tie a record set 100 years ago in central park. 11 below zero in monticello. highs tomorrow barely getting up into the middle teens and lowest wind chills overnight will be 10 to 20 degrees below zero. so a lot of layers, just common sense, wear hats and gloves heading outdoors. keep pets indoors and definitely know the signs of frostbite. in this type of situation, frostbite and hypothermia can develop in a matter of minutes when it gets so cold when these wind chills get to 10 to some cases 30 below zero areas north and west of new york city. not only are we talking cold in your accuweather forecast but we're also talking about snow, some accumulating snow. we'll have that coming up a little later in the half-hour. >> thank you. new york city mayor bill de blasio warns people to take extreme precautions and heed all the cold weather warnings. a code blue is in effect to get the homeless safely off the streets. eyewitness news reporter darla miles in downtown brooklyn tonight. darla.

a cruise ship sets sail once again after being battered in the ocean. royal caribbean's anthem of the sea sailed into a major winter storm on sunday. powerful winds and waves tossed the vessel around ruining passengers' vacations. but now the ship is back at sea. eyewitness news reporter aj ross in bayonne tonight. aj. >> reporter: the next wave of passengers aboard the an on this of the seas tonight seem more concerned about escaping the cold temperatures than the battered ship's turbulent some had reservations. but recent inspections by the coast guard seem to cast away most of their fears. week after the massive cruise ship was bat ahead in violent storm off the carolinas. while crews spent the past several days repairing damage aboard the vessel, the coast

we are going to be approaching records in new york city. a live look over toward midtown. that temperature down to 10 degrees. look at the wind coming in the from northwest at 17 gusting up to 36 miles per hour. now, the record for today is minus 1. that was set back in 1914. unless we get down to that level by midnight we won't reach that record but a reachable record is going to be tomorrow morning. 2 degrees set 100 years ago back in 1916. i think we'll tie that record perhaps even go a little lower than 2. if that happens if we get down to zero it would be the first time down to zero since january 1994. so it's been over two decades since the park has gotten down to the goose egg. record cold tonight still bitter tomorrow. dangerous outdoors overnight. wind chills of 10 to 20 below zero even cold ever north and west of the city. -- colder north and west of the city. accumulating snow monday afternoon into the evening, then rain monday night into tuesday.
