you can see. just a few minutes ago road cam drove by a six-car accident. this is northbound on i-95 in rye. no word on the extent of injuries. we'll begin with meteorologist lee goldberg outside of our studios. he's tracking it all. >> it is changing pretty quickly. that picture looks like it was mixing with freezing rain. ice pellets mixing with the snow now. i think over the next hour to hour and a half we'll see a change-over and stop the accumulating rainfall. we look outside right now and visibility from the brooklyn side, plaza looking in to manhattan is pretty low. light to moderate snowfall. we're up to 29. another two hours until we're above freezing. see the rain-snow line marching quickly through parts of new jersey. closing in on i-78 and also over

we're less than 36 hours removed from subzero temperatures. freezing in islip. 34 in belmar right now. so the ocean temperatures, 40. that's taking care of the coastline but the inland members will be much slower to come up. you see how we're mixing over to rain and freezing rain in new york city around 7:00. we're still going strong with snow north and west. that will change by 10:00 or 11:00. we see on eyewitness news it will be mix north of i-84 and during the overnight hours we all go to rain. it's light rain tomorrow morning and pouring tomorrow afternoon. we'll have more on that timing. winter weather advisory until midnight for the far northern suburbs till 7 a.m. gives you an idea that cold air is going to be tough to scour out. it's a windswept soaking tomorrow morning. snowfall amounts, inch, inch and a half in new york city. 1 to 3 inches north and west. a lot of this going to get washed away by all the soaking rain coming in.

long climb back. more on the accuweather forecast in a few minutes. >> long climb back indeed. stay off the roads if you can. those words of warning tonight for new jersey governor christie getting hit hardest from the snow moving in. new jersey reporter toni yates in saddle river where it is still coming down hard. >> this is the wintery drive home but we can do this. we know what to do. take it easy, take it slow if you're going out and look out with other drivers. >> it all started coming down pretty heavy, the snow. the roads getting slick. >> reporter: allen dale road in saddle river, that's one of the hills that can get icy and treacherous in cold wintery weather like this. >> the one thing you said, it's not really the snow but the ice. >> there's potential for ice in the forecast tonight. that's what concerns us the most. a lot of times it's unexpected. you don't see it accumulate and you have no control over your vehicle.

out. they started treating the roads before the snow started coming down heavy. with steady traffic the roads are not too bad. >> we do see some problems, especially vehicles that aren't equipped for wintery travel. >> reporter: if you're headed out, police say drive like we know we have to when we're in the thick of winter conditions. >> started icing up. that's that. >> so you guys aren't going to be driving around too much? >> probably not, but you never know. >> take a look out there. that is allendale road right now. they have salted that road but at this point with the snow continuously coming down and it being this cold out here, right now the snow is winning. it was black top just a few minutes ago. now it is not. so if you're going out, you definitely have to drive slow because chances are a lot of the roads look like this. just be careful and assume there is ice, even though there doesn't have to be, at least

toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. back to you. be safe. we're going to turn now to a developing story in the bronx. police shot and wounded a man they say was waving a gun in the air. it happened late this afternoon in the morrisania section. eyewitness news reporter darla miles is at the scene where police have just updated the investigation. >> witnesses say the suspect was walking around firing off rounds, pointing and waving this gun, even waving it as cars drove along the street. i'm standing on the corner of tinton avenue and east 156th street and this is where police say they were flagged down by witnesses. i want to take you to a picture of the gun recovered by the nypd. it's still on the ground in the snow as police officers continue their forensic investigation.

but possibly a small caliber. possibly .22. we're waiting for confirmation around the nypd. this happened around 3:45 this afternoon in the morrisania section of the bronx. when the suspect was spotted waving the gun on the street, they flagged down a patrol car to let them know what was going on. there were three police officers in the car at the time. they stopped, they ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. police say he did not and when he did not, two of those officers fired their guns and shot the suspect in the shoulder. >> they approached the male, engaged him, he had the gun in his hand. they fired a number of rounds, striking the male. the male has been moved to lincoln hospital. >> i heard what sounded like gunshots, pop, pop. i jumped up out of my bed and heard screaming. but i didn't come to the window. the next thing i know i looked out and i heard noises, like what sounded like gunshots. >> sources say that the suspect claimed he was under the

at this point his name has not been released. only identified as a 30-year-old male taken to lincoln hospital and is expected to survive. reporting live in the morrisania section of the bronx, darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. crews are gradually restoring power at grand central terminal tonight after a burst water pipe knocked out electricity today. travelers stunned by the darkness posted these pictures on social media today. the outage affected the lower level, prompting trains to divert the upper level. emergency generators provided backup power to the main hall. mta officials say trains are running without delays while work continues to get the lower level back in service. a fast moving fire burning through three homes in the greenpoint section of brooklyn. this was difficult to contain. flames jumping to two nearby homes about 10:00 last night with 140 firefighters braved the brutally cold temperatures. four people were hurt. fortunately none seriously.

through a vacant apartment building in unionport. the fire started at the basement of the building. happened shortly before 6:00. flames quickly spread to the roof of the three-story building. took just over an hour to contain the blaze. new information tonight about supreme court justice antonin scalia's health before he died. a judge in the texas county where scalia was found dead saturday said at first she wanted an autopsy but after speaking with his doctor, she determined it wasn't necessary. the doctor confirmed the 79-year-old had a history of heart trouble and high blood pressure. president obama says he will nominate a successor despite objections from republicans threatening to block whomever he picks. now to vote 2016. republican presidential candidate donald trump on something of a rampage verbally tonight threatening to sue one of his rivals ted cruz calling him the biggest liar he's ever met. another rival jeb bush bringing in his family to help campaign

>> police are investigating mr. spitzer over claims he choked a 25-year-old woman inside his hotel room at the plaza over the weekend. but now the woman is not cooperating with officers. >> spitzer resigning as governor eight years ago over a prostitution scandal. political reporter dave evans with the latest in midtown manhattan. >> police sources tell us there was a nasty argument here at the plaza hotel close to central park between the former governor and this alleged victim. police sources also tell us she has not helped at all with this investigation and in fact we believe she went ahead and went back to russia from jfk from a flight there on sunday night at about 7:00. so i think this one is going to be a tough investigation for police. >> reporter: the evening started with drinks. by 8:00 the 25-year-old woman called 911. she spoke of a two-year relationship with the 56-year-old former governor elliot spitzer. sources say she was distraught, having a breakdown, and claimed

police went to the plaza. here a detective going in to investigate. a crime scene van nearby. police saw a cut on the woman's arm and that's why she was taken to the hospital. spitzer accompanied her and there she made the allegation that spitzer choked her earlier in the evening when she threatened to return to russia. >> the police i think based upon my experience have more than enough to make an arrest, not because they think he did it or should be charged but my clients are arrested for a lot less. >> reporter: this defense attorney says police have to investigate and it could be a felony. the problem is the alleged victim is not cooperating with police. a spokesman for spitzer says there is no truth to the allegation. spitzer resigned in 2008 in a prostitution scandal. he tried for a political comeback two years ago running for city controller but he lost to scott stringer. >> i hope new yorkers will understand first i'm asking forgiveness for what led to my resignation but i hope they will

attorney general, as governor, assistant district attorney. >> and late this afternoon spitzer issued a new statement. it says the woman who initially made the allegation was not my girlfriend. it goes on, liz smith was my girlfriend, and i had and have deep affection for liz. of course liz smith was the press secretary to mayor de blasio during his campaign for mayor two years ago. she has since gone on and helped run the presidential campaign of martin o'malley for president. that's the latest here. this alleged victim has gone back to russia. dave evans, channel 7 eyewitness news. police released a picture of the suspect who they say slashed a college student across the face. investigators are looking for this man right there. they say he attacked the 20-year-old victim last week in the van ness section of the bronx.

over from snow to freezing rain. notice the numbers here. 36 islip and 36 in belmar. we're really warming up along the coast because all that warm air is coming from the ocean, the 40-degree ocean water but it's going to have a tough time making it inland. a mix at 7:00 around freezing in new york city. then we'll go to rain throughout the evening hours. i'll show you the futurecast in a moment. tomorrow morning's light rain fog increasing wind but we'll start the day at 47. going to the mid 50s. rain gets heavier after lunchtime. around lunchtime, west of the city. this is a cool radar because it started to rain in long beach. mixing at jfk right now. snowing in new york city. pivot around, you see the rain-snow line coming in to keenesburg, homedale. westerly we'll start to see mixing there and eventually in to manhattan over the next hour and bronx too. just to the west of the rain-snow line you've got your heavy snow. patterson, plain field and over to berkeley heights summit, livingston.

same thing in the hudson valley. french inch in northern westchester. with all that air pouring in from the ocean we'll have our changeover. lighter precipitation overnight. this is what we have to go through tomorrow afternoon. noon to 5:00, heavy soaking rainfall. once again mixing by 7:00 in new york city. north and west of i-287 after 9:00. it will take between 10:00 and midnight for the freezing line to get north and west of i-84 and it's still mixing and snowing in the catskills, probably not snowing but mixing freezing rain in the catskills at midnight. at least it's just wet. this is going to be heavy and windswept. leaving during the evening hours. you've got an inch, inch and a half from new york city. western parts of nassau county. mostly 2s and 3s. tomorrow we'll wash all that away with a half inch to quarter inch of rain.
