new jersey and look at that. that serene picture of new york harbor. anything but about an hour ago. the showers will be moving away and the clearing will continue during the overnight. we had wind gusts at 50 miles per hour, 53 miles per hour in teterboro and the wind gusts ovthe last hour are down in the more 20 to 30-mile-per-hour range. they'll continue to diminish as we go through the evening. showers are exiting the area over the next hour. there is some street flooding that will persist through the evening commute. still be careful with your travel. and even tomorrow morning as the numbers get colder again we'll have patches of black ice that begin to return to the suburbs. right now mild, nice breeze, and finally tranquil in new york city. 7-day accuweather forecast coming up in a few minutes. the weather wreaking havoc on long island. a belmar woman driving down the road was suddenly trapped in a car when a tree came crashing down on top of her vehicle. stacey sager just talked to her about what happened and

>> she got the scare of her life, i can tell you that much. check out the situation behind me here. we're on marden avenue in belmore where nassau county police and pse&g are hard at work. it took down a large tree. it landed right on top of a power line. but that's not all it landed on. the tree landed right on top of a car as well with a woman who was driving the car sitting inside the car. the next thing she sees, flashing lights from live wires at which point all she could do was pray. >> the wires just were crazy. a live wire again, like right in front of my windshield and if that would have blew, that's what i'm still trying to get over. >> you're very lucky. >> i am. >> what do you say after something like this?

how about lucky you're around mom. >> god was watching me today. >> there you go. check this out too here in westbury, more downed power lines. ridge drive, the wind took down those power lines, smoldering in the street which needed to be blocked off to traffic. we're live here in belmore where pseg crews working to fix it, get it back and running. a short while ago the traffic lights weren't working so we've seen some improvement but clearly the rain was not the biggest problem here in nassau county. it was the wind. the gusting wind which took down trees and power lines. thankfully that woman in the car got out of this uninjured. we're live, stacey sager, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> as the rain moves out of the area you can track it with our accutrack weather alert app. free in the itunes and google play stores.

one point it broke the safety glass on a table 22 stories high. two women on the ground below were caught by small pieces of broken glass that came crashing down. this happened in midtown at 7th avenue at 39th street. eyewitness news reporter michelle charlesworth is there now with more. >> just scary is the only word for this. these women were walking down the sidewalk. all of the small squares of safety glass just came crashing down without warning. all because of the sudden high winds and because someone failed to secure a table on the 22nd floor. >> reporter: this is just a handful of the pieces of glass that came raining down on the sidewalk from the 22nd floor, cutting one woman and hurting the back of another. this was at 530 seventh avenue, a building which has set back terraces on the high floors.

and blood on the floor. it was white so it looked a lot more than it was actually. that's a lot of glass on the floor. >> reporter: the glass is all over the sidewalk still at 39th and 7th. police tell me a large and high standing patio cocktail table a 22nd floor terrace was pushed by the wind so hard that it hit a patio railing and shattered the pieces of glass, not the rest of the table, came down covering the street. >> were the women okay? there were scratches on their faces? >> she was bleeding from her mouth actually. >> reporter: the women were taken to bellevue. one with a cut to her lip. the other complaining of neck and back pain. >> we tried to talk to management in the building. they did not offer a comment. but sources tell us violation was issued for failure to secure. we're live in midtown right now,

meanwhile crews are looking in to whether wind was a factor in the collapse of a building's facade in manhattan. eyewitnesss say -- eyewitnesses say two large pieces came crashing in to a store awning then in to the sidewalk. fortunately nobody was injured. new at 5:00, we're hearing for the first time from the cab driver who was slashed across the face supposedly by a passenger. it began with a verbal fight, then suddenly he was slashed from his ear to his chin. kemberly richardson tweeted out a photo. she's live at the scene. >> he asked we not use his name or show his face. he's still shaken up. the father of three literally had to fight for his life as the passenger in the back seat of his cab repeatedly attacked him, stabbed him in the face, causing a gaping wound from his ear to

bone and needed 60 stitches to close. jose picked up leolyn rowe. he said rowe was acting strange the moment he got in to the car, was slurring his words and having a heated argument with a woman on the phone. on amsterdam avenue and street, jose says rowe grabbed him from behind and started stabbing him. jose eventually did get out of his car. rowe was stuck inside and unsuccessfully tried to kick out the glass. rowe did get out of the car and tried to get away but jose kept going and eventually tackled rowe. police responded and took the suspect in to custody. rowe didn't try to rob jose and

what set this suspect off. >> did you ever see the knife? everything was hard. [ indiscernible ] >> jose really thought he was going to die. he tells me the only thing he could think of was his three kids ages 15, 9, and 8, and leaving them without a father. that cut, again, a lot of nerve damage in his face. he faces a long recovery. there was no partition in this livery cab, but jose's car does have cameras, no doubt video detectives are looking at tonight. that suspect, rowe, is expected to face a judge this afternoon. coming up at 6:00 you'll hear more from jose. kemberly richardson, channel 7

we have new information in a gruesome triple murder. the man accused of stabbing his girlfriend and two of her children to death is staying behind bars. a judge in staten island ordered that michael sykes continue to be held without bail today. his new attorney asked for him to be placed on medical and suicide watch. police say sykes stabbed and killed rebecca cutler, her 19-month-old and 4-month-old daughter. a third child, a 2-year-old girl, survived. public viewing for supreme court justice antonin scalia is set. scalia will lie in repose in the great hall at the supreme court in washington, d.c. on friday. people can pay their respects from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. today the chair once occupied by scalia, the bench in front of it, and the entrance to the court were draped in black wool. the united nations says former secretary galli has died. he reportedly passed away at a cairo hospital after he was

the veteran egyptian diplomat helped negotiate his country's landmark peace deal with israel. he served as the u.n.'s sixth secretary general from 1992 to 1996. he frequently clashed with the clinton administration and the u.s. blocked his renewal to the post. he was 93 years old. pope francis issuing a call to action tonight to priests and nuns in mexico. the pontiff was greeted by this welcome message created by more than 1,000 people as he headed to mass. during his homily the pope told the nuns and priest not to resign themselves to a country plagued by drug violence and corruption. instead he said they should fight injustice. still a lot more to come. neighborhood. a teenager calls police saying her father is attacking the family with a knife. the ending to all of this turned deadly when police arrived. >> plus, presidential candidate hillary clinton is in manhattan

another's ability to tell the truth. most of the gop candidates are stomping across south carolina today and that includes jeb bush without his glasses who has brought his brother in, the former president, all on the campaign trail. governor chris christie making his first public appearance since dropping out of the race for president. he began his annual budget speech by thanking the people of new jersey for allowing him the privilege for running for president. >> while the result was not what i hoped for, and maybe some of you too, the experience has made me a better governor, has made me a better american, and it's made me a better person. >> christie went on to propose a $34.8 billion budget with no new taxes. the proposal increases funding for the public pension to $1.9 billion but leaves coming up with a solution for the state's troubled transportation fund for later.

the last few hours, dropped about 9 degrees. you're at 43. 52 in toms river. 54 in norwalk. you can see our storm in upstate new york, it's going toward burlington and it's about to sweep a cold front through. the strong winds and storms are on the eastern side of the storm. things are clearing out but it's a lot colder over parts of central pennsylvania. partial clearing overnight. winds still busy early evening. clouds and sunshine throughout the day. and highs getting in to the low and middle 40s. there's the radar right now. last raindrops leaving montauk. sprinkles have been withering away one storm moves out of the way. it takes a northerly turn in to eastern canada. cold front here. that's our next weak weather maker which reinforces chilly air for thursday, our coldest day of the week.

number 7 subway service has resumed after earlier problems but there's no express service. now to paris where the american rock band that was performing during the deadly terror attack in november today performed a tribute concert for survivors. eagles of death metal was on stage when terrorists stormed the bataclan and killed 89 people. attendees had to go through three bag and body searches before they were allowed inside. on wall street stocks closed higher this afternoon. investors responding to encouraging news about company earnings and deals. dow jumped 222 points to close at 16,196. nasdaq rose 98 to finish at 4,435 and s&p 500 added 30 points to close at 1,895. still ahead on eyewitness news, surveillance video of someone damaging a statue at a church in brooklyn.

trying to get her federal tax refund. >> i was out $3,688. >> reporter: unbeknownst to her, her accountant efiled her 2014 taxes using one gargantuan glitch. >> he never had our account numbers. i wanted a paper check. >> reporter: they blamed a computer crash that sent the money to another client. >> when they realized they got the money, did they return it? >> no, they didn't. they spent it. >> reporter: before the money was all gone, new york state was able to grab its portion out of the account and return it to linda but the federal irs, despite letter letter, was no help at all. >> the irs at the end told me the accountant was responsible and he was to pay me. >> reporter: nine months later, never happened. linda asked the staten island da for help. >> right now you have the irs involved, the da's office, and a judge.

on the supreme court who helped shape the legal landscape. he also called him a good friend. now to a desperate call to 911 from a teenaged girl in connecticut. her family under attack by their family. >> the attack ended when police opened fire, killing the suspect. shocked friends of the family trying to make sense of the tragedy. >> eyewitness reporter marcus solis spoke to them. he's in fairfield. >> it almost sounds cliche but neighbors describe the family as your typical suburban family in a typical suburban home but that family dynamic forever changed today. >> they were the last people i'd say something like this would happen to. doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: so many questions friends and police are trying to answer. investigators spent the afternoon recreating the scene of the crime, an incident of domestic violence that ended in death. the man who police say attacked his entire family was in turn shot and killed by fairfield cop

>> this individual would not acomply y -- would not comply with the officers. the officer did fire. that's under investigation. >> reporter: a teenager called 911 from the home. police say 58-year-old christopher andrews had bludgeoned and stabbed his wife kathleen and their 12-year-old son in a bedroom. the 13-year-old managed to call for her while her 15-year-old brother wrestled their father for the weapon. >> this is a horrific incident. it happened fast and the youngest child was transported from our local hospital, st. vincent's hospital to yale new haven hospital. >> reporter: andrews is a lawyer in manhattan. the oldest son plays football in high school. as an 11-year-old played on a little league baseball team that won the state title. the family rented the home for nearly 10 years where neighbors say andrews could be seen outside playing ball or with his wife drinking a glass of wine.

ago and they were happy as can be. no signs, they were nothing but happy. >> the four family members remain hospitalized and nearly 12 hours later state police remain here on the scene as this investigation continues. live in fairfield, marcus solis, channel 7 eyewitness news. police want to talk to a man in connection with a deadly shooting at a bar in harlem. 26-year-old wilfred person is wanted for questioning. officers responded to a shooting saturday at the harlem nights bar. two men were found with gunshot wounds. jerrell mitchell later died at the hospital. a 24-year-old man was shot in the leg. also in harlem con ed crews are searching for the source of a gas leak. it was detected in the building on 118th street. it's unclear when the displaced residents will be allowed to return home. three people are recovering tonight after a bus crash in new jersey.

it hit another car then hit a guard raimpt tonight the passengers say the driver's quick action saved lives. dray clark has the story. >> we slammed in to a wall and people got hurt. >> reporter: passengers stepped off the damaged coach bus all saying the same thing. it could have been worse. but they credit their driver who never lost her cool even as the bus seemed to be out of control. >> a little bit of training, a little bit of instinct. a little bit of i did what i had to do. >> reporter: the bus left the lehigh valley in pennsylvania early this morning, headed to new york city. but on eastbound 78 in summit, new jersey the bus hit a patch of black ice and crashed in to a car and guardrail. this cell phone video shows the aftermath. two people onboard the bus and the driver of this mangled car only suffered minor injuries. >> just a nose bleed and couple people shaken up. >> reporter: new jersey state police say there were at least

the same stretch of icy highway. >> if i had my skates i'd play hockey on it. >> reporter: john crashed his pickup truck trying to avoid another wreck. >> i did two 360s in the middle of the accident and ended up against the guardrail. >> reporter: back on the bus, passengers sat patiently while also pondering how fortunate they are that the bus stayed up right and mostly intact. another bus was brought in to help the passengers reach their final destination and passengers say considering all that happened this morning, they're just grateful they can walk from one bus to another. in union, new jersey, channel 7 eyewitness news. new at 5:00, passengers on a delta plane trying to get back to new york from the dominican republic keep running in to weather trouble. we told you last night at 11:00 the flight from punta cana was diverted to manchester, new hampshire due to weather problems.

strong winds forced the plane to divert again, this time to boston. it's unclear when those passengers will be able to return to new york. >> you know they got to be frustrated. mayor bill de blasio is spreading the word about the brooklyn queens light rail proposal. the light rail would travel 16 miles. the mayor says it's an essential part of creating a five-borough economy. he addressed the community saying the rail will give residents and businesses a boost with unprecedented access. every time we improve mass transit, every time we give people more options, it not only makes their lives better, it guvz them more -- gives them more access to jobs. it gives them a reason to get out of their cars and create less congestion on our streets. >> the $2.5 billion system would be completed in 2024. the mayor says over 30 years it would provide access to $25 billion in economic activity. a subway tragedy. a man killed after getting

new details about how a man was dragged to his death from a subway car. investigators say a piece of his clothing may have gotten caught

leaving the union turnpike station. the 51-year-old victim hit his head against the platform. a homeless woman in california arrested for abandoning her newborn baby in a subway restaurant. police say an employee discovered the newborn in the toilet. the baby boy was sitting up right but was partially submerged in water. when police arrived, officers found a trail of blood and discovered the mother hiding in some bushes. for treatment. she was later arrested. the baby is said to be doing okay. freak accident on a basketball court. an 8th grade player was partially impaled by a splinter floor board. before we show you the video, we want to let you know this little girl is okay. this happened during a basketball tournament in wisconsin. the 14-year-old fell and slid, a part of the floor split and hit the young player. emergency crews rushed her to the hospital. thankfully the wood did not hit

a leopard that was captured after going on a rampage at a school in india has escaped again. the leopard escaped when attends opened the cage to feed it. it mauled six people at a school. everyone survived that attack. the u.s. coast guard is trying to determine who's to blame for the el faro sailing in to a hurricane, killing all people onboard. the panel learned about an

most areas are staying dry. that's the warm front. a shower is a possibility in the afternoon hours but we're in the low and perhaps middle 50s. sunday looks good as well. sun mixing with clouds. maybe a late day shower. monday is 48. we'll probably have a shower by late day tuesday. that's the next opportunity for a more significant storm to come up the coast and give us potentially a soaking and maybe some inland snow and wintery precipitation. that's something we'll look to. but that is in about a week's time. when you look at that 7-day, we've got a nice quiet stretch as we go through the third week in february. something we talked about in the long range forecast. right now it's more of a coastal rain, snow-type things we're worrying about but we have a mostly quiet week to enjoy. >> not quite the perfect weather for skydiving. but we're still going to talk about it. because maybe you want to ago skydiving but you're afraid of the diving high above the earth part. >> this is a little safer and you don't have to worry about the weather.
