overall precipitation is winding down. you see clouds, we look south and visibilities are improving. camera still bouncing as we'll have a brisk west wind. wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour a couple hours ago, close to 60. but over the last hour they've definitely relaxed a little bit but still 25 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts that will subside during the overnight. numbers in the 50s. look at monticello which was near 50. now down to 39. giving you an idea we're definitely going to cool off overnight. roller coaster ride finally comes to an end. we'll finally get to get off the ride. street flooding per sustains for for -- persists for the evening commute. temperatures in the low and middle 30s. it is brisk with the humidity going down and the cooler wind. don't go with the light wind jacket. heavier coat because it's getting chillier. now we'll turn to the damage. as we told you earlier, huge

power line then on a car. stacey sager talked to the woman inside that car. she continues our coverage. >> that woman was panic stricken but thanks to nassau county police and her own common sense, she's going to be just fine. a very large tree came crashing down on to a power line. you can see behind me here nassau county police are still on the scene. so is pseg because that tree is still sitting on the power line and that's not all it hit. as you can see from these pictures taken earlier today it landed right on top of the woman's car. she was behind the wheel of the white car at the time. she wanted to get right out but became terrified because of all the live wires. that's when officers stepped in to help. >> there were a few live wires

not little sparks. a flame went up. my initial reaction is they were already here when that happened. i was trying to get out. i just panicked. >> i'd be nervous too if i was in the car. that didn't matter to us. we just wanted to get her out of the car. >> is this another day for you? >> yeah, that's what i signed up for. >> that's what they signed up for. could have been a lot worse here in belmar. also a tree on a house. the biggest problem here, not the rain but the wind. fortunately no serious injuries though. stacey sager, channel 7 eyewitness news. high winds are being blamed manhattan today. a glass table broke on a 22nd floor balcony sending shards of glass on to the street below. it happened shortly before 11:00 this morning on 7th avenue and 39th street. two women walking below were taken to bellevue hospital with cuts. inspectors have issued a

for failure to secure the building during today's high winds. we've posted viewer pictures and videos of the storm on our website, abc7ny and lee will be back in a minute. new york cops looking for a pair of thugs. >> when the family declined a woman's offer to buy tickets from her, the family's father was then attacked. >> he now has a fractured skull. here's eyewitness news reporter sandra bookman. >> reporter: this is a photo of that tourist from arkansas obtained exclusively by eyewitness news. it was taken just minutes after the man was punched in the face and knocked to the ground outside the staten island ferry terminal yesterday. commuter kenny pragel offered his umbrella for protection and took the picture. >> he was conscious. there was blood. and he definitely seemed like he was affected by what happened with the assault. >> the injured man was taken to

that tourist was attacked after he reportedly refused to buy liberty. believe were fake. the suspect they're looking for had apparently tried to pull this same scam before. >> we're going to crackdown on anyone who commits a crime in this city and particularly if there's any kind of organized effort we want to get at it as root and cut it off. >> reporter: agent trying to convince visitors they offer the best deal to see lady liberty told us this assault gives them all a bad name. >> of course it does and it affects people's jobs as well because then the police don't want people out here because of things like that so it makes it tough for everybody. >> reporter: surveillance cameras outside the terminal reportedly captured the assault. police are said to be looking for a 25-year-old man from brooklyn. in lower manhattan, sandra bookman, channel 7 eyewitness news. governor christie making his first public appearance since ending his campaign for president.

budget speech by thanking the people of new jersey for allowing him for privilege for running for president. >> while the result was not what i hoped for, and maybe some of you too, the experience has made me a better governor, a better american, and it's made me a better person. >> christie went on to propose a $34.8 billion budget with no new taxes. the proposal increases funding for the public pension to $1.9 billion but it leaves with a solution to the state's troubled transportation fund for later. now to vote 2016. a new poll tonight showing hillary clinton leading bernie sanders in the democratic primary among likely voters in south carolina. the meeting with leaders of the african american community. running in to a quite public display of coughing. >> hillary!

hillary! >> the crowd cheering for clinton. it took about 3 minutes, a cough drop, and a glass of water to reboot her speech. her visit here a serious one though, hoping to ensure her decades-long support of minority voters. >> there are still very real barriers holding back african americans from fully participating in our economy and our society. >> among those she met with, civil rights leader al sharpton. will she get his endorsement? in a video posted to twitter, sharpton said clinton is the only one who knows. bernie sanders campaigning in south carolina today with a local connection. he was introduced and hugged by eric garner's daughter, erica. garner died after he was placed in an apparent chokehold by new york cops on staten island a year ago last summer.

ted cruz, marco rubio, donald trump all took digs at each other accusing the other of telling lies. jeb bush is bringing out the big guns, his brother, former president george w. bush continuing to help him out on the campaign trail. and the public will be able to pay their respects to supreme court justice antonin scalia on friday. scalia will lie in repose at the great hall of the supreme court in washington, d.c. from 10:30 to 8 p.m. that night. today the chair once occupied by scalia, the bench in front of it and the entrance to the court were draped in black bunting. no word on funeral plans. president obama reaffirmed his plan to nominate someone who is indisputably qualified to fill scalia's seat. >> the job doesn't stop until you're voted out or until your term expired. i tend to do my job between now and january 20th of 2017. i expect them to do their job as well.

the commute home in many parts of your area including the bronx river parkway. carolina leid is in white plains with much more on that. >> this is just an area of the bronx river parkway that is such a problem. the bronx river parkway is shut down. cars not allowed on here going north or south. giving you an idea of how bad it was at one point, it was about 2 feet deep. the water overflowing from the bronx river over that wall and on to the actual parkway. really has been a problem for so many commuters for so 17 years. we're in white plains off of main street and the cars are being diverted off of the bronx river going south. we also saw a problem on the bronx river going north from the yonkers mount vernon area where it meets with the spring.

travelers and commuters because they're being detoured. the water is deep, receding, but still a problem because people cannot drive on the roadway right now. the latest slashing on the streets of new york city happened in a cab. the victim, a livery driver in some kind of dispute with his passenger. he was slashed in the face. the driver cut from ears to chin. what is going on in the city with knife attacks? >> even though the man who allegedly did this to jose is in custody, the 45-year-old livery cab driver didn't want us to show his face or use his full name. he tells me this passenger was acting on the second he got in his cab, he thought about pulling over and telling him to get out but he admits he

it almost cost him his life. >> did you ever see the knife? >> not really because it was dark in there. it was dark and everything was so hard. >> reporter: in a matter of seconds blood was pouring from jose's face, cut to the bone, a gaping wound that took 60 stichss to close. >> when i look at him, i say wow, i think i'm driving the devil in my car. >> reporter: jose picked up the street hail around 1:30 this morning. he said he was acting strange the second he got in the car. when they got to the drop-off point, it didn't exist. then without warning at amsterdam and 158th, jose says rowe attacked him from behind. there's no partition in his car.

>> reporter: jose was convinced he was going to die. the father of three knew he had to get away from rowe. jose was able to get out of his vehicle. rowe was stuck inside, tried to kick out the glass. it didn't work. but he did get out and tried to walk away. >> kicking his legs from the back, then he turned and he cut my shoulder. >> reporter: jose needed two staples to close the cut in his to close the cut in his head. jose tackled him two more times before police arrived and took the suspect in to custody. >> first thing coming to my mind is my three kids. that's why i was worried. the little ones. >> didn't want to leave them without his father. the kids just 15, 9, and 8 years old. jose tells me there are cameras

you'd think they'd done that a while ago. it's a very progressive company and they're doing it now. >> more and more options. good stuff. wow, you just hear about all the flooding and traffic issues that are happening out there tonight and this weather just wreaked havoc. >> you name it, we've had it over the past four, five days and of course this weekend played in to some of the problems we had today with cold ground and all the runoff. normally the ground would be able to take it. outside we go where we have what is a beautiful time lapse of a great looking day where things got more stable. we look in the upper west side right now. folks can walk without the umbrellas blowing inside out. you don't have to slip on the crosswalk which was so icy last night to try to get around. we're at 51 degrees, west wind 10 to 30 miles per hour.

we came all the way back from one below from 54. we actually rose 55 degrees in 55 hours. pretty wild. rainfall today about an inch. inch of snowfall yesterday. sunset tonight was at 5:31. we still have 50s from montgomery to hope well junction. 37 in monticello. the light weight jacket this afternoon won't cut it this evening. cold front is actually moving through right now pushing all the mild air offshore and you see it's near freezing in pittsburgh and that's the type of air that's coming in. gusty breeze first part of the evening then it will back off overnight. clouds and sun tomorrow. a breeze. but less wind and low to mid 40s should do it for your highs tomorrow. there's the clearing lines. low cloudiness in the wake of the front. actual lows over the adirondacks, that's lifting to the north. there's a reinforcing cold shot of air coming through the great lakes. there's some snow showers there. a few could survive in to the

trying to wrap my head around this. zero degrees, rob starts with baseball. >> keep them guessing. any time is football season. football season is over. football year continues on the calendar. the nfl franchise price tag window opens today, goes through the end of the month. speculation with the jets centers on pro bowl defensive end mohammed wilkerson. as far as the jets are concerned, this franchise tag would seem to be taylor made. no progress on a long-term contract. tag them, keep them on a one-year deal worth the average of the top five salaries in football. that would make it north of $15 million. that's a vanilla explanation but the explanation. window now open. wilkerson coming back from that broken leg. giants head coach ben mcadoo finalized his entire 20-man coaching staff. 12 assistants were on tom coughlin's staff last year including steve spagnola, mike quinn, and mike sullivan who

we were at practice today. mcdonagh was on the ice skating, getting ready. mcdonagh was punched by phillies wayne simmons. that's where the concussion came from. all signs are looking good for tomorrow. >> i'm going to say i'm good enough to go. as long as the coaching staff feels that they want me, we'll go from there. >> he's all right tomorrow, optional tomorrow morning. good chance i'll put him in the lineup. >> we'll see the nba season still on its all star break. chris bosh apparently dealing with a blood clot in one leg. he's taking blood thinners to help the situation and hopes to play again this season. he missed 30 games last year with a blood clot in his lungs. bosh was at the all star game over the weekend but withdrew with pain in one of his calves and that's when the clot was apparently discovered. nba trade deadline thursday. the moves have started.
