trying to retrace the evidence that ended in a shootout. you can clearly see the damaged patrol car involved and several dozen markers, vital clues detectives are building their case around. >> a bunch of gunshots. one after the other after the other. >> a hail of gun fire pierced the night sky early saturday as officers from the 81st 81st precinct and others were led on a wild chase. investigators say it all began just before 3:30 a.m. when officers first approached 34-year-old jamal fumes who was allegedly armed with this .357 and pointed it at officers before getting in his car. >> i look out the window, and it's a ton of cops and everybody is right out front there. >> police say he eventually made a wrong turn.

patrol car before engaging in a shootout. during the exchange, the officer was struck by bullet fragments just below his vest and officer youric was struck in his vest. >> they deserve a happened. they potentially saved lives. >> the night before they apprehended a suspect with a firearm. >> according to police, the suspect has 15 prior arrests in new york city and another eleven when he lived in chicago before leaving in 2000. >> i'm just very grateful the police officers that were injured are going to make it, they're going to be okay. >> the suspect's car is also still here on scene. we're being told more than 30 shots were fired during this exchange. we're also gathering more

coming up on eyewitness at 6:00, i will have more from community leaders. they say it's more important than ever to stand with the police department. >> we're learning more about the two officers injured in the shooting, including one whose father was shot in the lieutenant years ago. melanie hoff is in long island with that part of our coverage. valerie. >> reporter: joe, good evening. andrew youric is recovering here in nassau county at his father's home. this is where he grew up. i spoke with officers today that paid a visit. they told me he's doing well despite the circumstances. >> an american flag flies outside the home where officer youric is recovering. officers arrived for a visit. they shared words. >> they're fine.

okay after it appears his bulletproof vest saved his life. now the officer is recovering. it's a scenario all too farm. his father, paul youric, is a retired police officer. he survived after being shot on the job and he was also saved by a bulletproof vest. now another devastatingly close call. a neighbor describes a little boy she's proud of to grow up and protect and serve. >> my daughter came in and told me that andrew was shot. i was very sad about it. >> you remember him as a child. >> yes, i do. yes, i do, growing up. >> tell me what went through your head. >> i just felt very sad, felt very bad. >> i saw him playing in the street. >> youric is 29 years old. he's been on the force for three years, again, he's

live in nassau county. mallory hoff, abc news. they pursued the suspect several blocks. shannon stone and news copter 7 lays out the chain of events. >> this story started shortly after 3:00 this morning at the intersection of malcolm x boulevard and quincy where police were responding to shots fired. they came across a vehicle that brandished a gun and fled the scene going the wrong way along quincy street and then coming bang down lexington avenue. you can see on the police tape here at the intersection of lexington avenue and malcolm x boulevard, that's where the suspect's vehicle collided head- on with a police cruiser. then shots were fired between both of the officers and the suspect. if you look closely, you can see bullet holes on the hood of

side of the car up and down lexington avenue. there are markers that police are combing through to try to make heads or tails of this situation. reporting over bedford, shannon stone, channel 7, eyewitness news. >> now, the officers were part of an anticrime unit. ray kelly explained for us the difference between anticrime officers and other officers. >> anticrime officers are officers in civilian clothes in unmarked cars who are deployed to observe crime happening in a suspicious manner. they're focused on people with guns. it is a demanding job. >> this is the latest in a string of attacks with police officers over the last two years. earlier this month, two officers were hurt while patrolling a housing complex in

bernie sanders in the south carolina caucus -- nevada caucuses. >> sandra and joe, good evening. polls close here at 7:00 p.m. in south carolina. going into today's vote, donald trump has had a solid lead in the polls in this state. ted cruz and marco rubio have made gains. it will be interesting tonight to see candidates are able to narrow the gap. the other big question mark is for jeb bush. if he does not perform well tonight, what is a way forward for a candidate like jeb bush. here's matthew dowd. >> in south carolina, win, place, show. whoever finishes outside of those top three is problematic. >> officials here in south

that record set in 2012 when newt newt gingrich won the state. i'm channel 7, eyewitness news. >> let's head back out west before we let you go. have you heard anything about the caucuses in nevada? >> reporter: so we're getting early poll results from the nevada caucus scores. we're seeing interesting trends. number one we're seeing a bigger gender gap. women supporting hillary clinton. men, bernie sanders. we're seeing a big age gap. people over the age of 45 are supporting clinton. under the age of 45, supporting sanders. he's also getting a lot of support from the overall caucus goers and who is ultimately going to win the state. >> back in south carolina, what have you been hearing from voters? that's certainly an interesting race. >> sure. i've been talking to a lot of voters. we went to a polling location.

union workers are failing to strike after a cooling off period. a session is reportedly scheduled for next week. >> more than two dozen people were hurt when a chair lift broke at a ski resort in west virginia. the lift at timberline resort in davis derailed, and 25 people fell about 30 feet to the ground. two people needed treatment at the hospital for nonlife- threatening injuries. there's no immediate word on what caused that derailment. investigation is now under way. >> i think say a lot of us are happy to say this was not ski weather around here. a nice break. >> what a difference a week makes. just incredible. last time we had wind chills at 10-12 below zero. we easily got above the 60- degree mark across much of the region. a live look right now up the mighty hudson river.

look up toward the george washington bridge. temperature is still 60 degrees, up to 61 a little bit this afternoon. the southwest wind comes in around 6 miles per hour. that's pumping in the warmth. that pressure is falling right now from 29.84. nearly 10 degrees above. the record was 69. didn't get close to that. that was set back in 1939. clouds increase tomorrow. that stops them from rising too much. lower 50s again, still well above average, but no 60-degree warmth. there will be rain coming in tomorrow night as well. that clears out just in time for monday as we head back to work. so it's quiet monday and most of tuesday. then we have to watch tuesday night into wednesday. right now it looks like it will

students and staff members at a university in indiana are required to get booster shots for the mumps. after nine cases were confirmed on campus, administrators at butler university have stepped up sanitizing efforts across
