breaking news. hillary clinton beats bernie sanders in the democratic caucus in nevada while the republican presidential candidates battle for votes in south carolina. first, this morning is a reminder of the important and dangerous and crucial work that officers shot. two of our finest were shot. we're learning new information about these police officers and

good evening, everyone. i'm sarah bookman. >> i'm joe torrez. we begin with the two officers shot in the line of duty. they were wounded. more than 30 shots were fired by six responding nypd officers. so many bullets flew, forensics will ultimately determine whether or not the officers were hit by friendly fire. >> the suspect was shot several times. he's being treated right now. he pointed a gun at the officers. they reported this revolver from the scene. we're going to begin with eyewitness news reporter aj ross. >> reporter: from the suspect's car to the police vehicles involved in this wild chase and shootout, everything is still here and being carefully documented. from this van damage point, we've counted more than 50 evidence markers and more than

so there's still a lot to sort out here. >> i knew there were gunshots. it ended in an all out shootout early saturday. sending officers to nearby hospitals. investigators say it all began just before 330 when two housing officers approached 34- year-old jamal fumes. he was armed with this .357 magnum and pointed it at them before fleeing in his car. >> it's a reminder of the important and dangerous crucial work that our police officers do and the way they put their lives on the line for us every single day he violently slammed into the patrol car before the police opened fire. during the melee, the officer was struck in his hip and officer youric was struck in his hip. recovery.

fired from so many different directions, forensics will ultimately tell which rounds struck the officers. >> the circumstances of the shooting itself, that's what we'll attempt to identify. where were the various at the time of the incident. >> they potentially save lives. >> they deserve a hand. >> they definitely deserve a hand. >> my office, they're tremendous. the night before they apprehended an individual with a firearm. >> meanwhile, one officer is being off -- meanwhile, the suspect is being streeted. it's

we noticed them taking photos of some of the evidence here. we're also learning the bullets that struck those officers were likely ricochet bullets. they will likely determine fired from. >> both of the wounded nypd officers live in long island. he is from elmont. that's where eyewitness reporter mallory hoff continues our coverage. >> andrew youric is 29 years old. he served on the force for three years. tonight he's recovering at his father's home in nassau county. this is where he grew up. i talked to the man who visited that home. he said that could have been so much worse.

everything was okay. nypd officer andrew youric is recovering. >> he did fine. i think he's going to be okay. >> earlier today, they arrived to check in. they stayed outside the home for the afternoon. youric is expected to be okay. after investigators say it appears his bulletproof vest saved his life. it's a scenario all too familiar for the youric family. his father is a retired police officer. he, too, survived after being shot while on the job in 1989. he was also saved by a bulletproof vest. >> crazy. all of a sudden, many years ago this happened and now it happens again. it's crazy. >> it's really incredible. two men both saved by a bulletproof vest. the family tonight is asking for comfort, loving support as well as their privacy at this time. live in nassau county, mallory hoff, channel 7, eyewitness

we want to take you out live to las vegas. we're watching supporters there. we're anxiously -- they're anxiously waiting for their candidate to come out and claim victory in the nevada caucuses. as she comes out and gives a speech, we'll lot you -- let you know about it. another woman is charged in a fatal hit-and-run. her suv struck and killed 28- year-old peter cuomo in metford at about 8:20 last night. he pulled over and got out of his car after hitting a parked vehicle. two of his passengers and a woman standing nearby were hurt as well. 61-year-old kathy horran is charged with leaving an accident scene without reporting a fatality. >> supporters rally behind a former cop convicted of manslaughter. thousands of people demonstrated support of peter luan. the message they want everyone

police officer convicted in a deadly stairwell shooting. 10,000 people rallied in brooklyn to protest peter lang's conviction. >> a former nypd officer, the death is a terrible tragedy, but they say you cannot fix one injustice with another. tens of thousands of them marching across the nation today from los angeles to new york in brooklyn, confusion over the conviction of rookie cop. protests across the country. estimated 5,000. while he needs to be held

scapegoated. >> we're angry for the system november 2014 shooting in new york. he fired his weapon while performing patrol in a darkened stairwell. it struck him in the chest. >> there was some mistakes after the shooting, obviously, we do agree with that. >> supporters held a moment of silence, expressing deep sorrow for his family. the former cop says he wishes the bullet struck him instead.

the mass at the basilica national shrine immaculate conception. scalia's son, paul, a catholic priest, led his father's funeral mass. >> dad understood that the deeper he went in his catholic faith, the better a citizen and public servant he became. he died unexpectedly while visiting a ranch in texas. he was 79 years old. after last week's arctic invasion, today felt really good.

news. hillary clinton speaking to her supporters in nevada where she let's listen. >> we see children growing up in poverty, pain, or fear. here in nevada, a brave young girl told me how scared she is that her parents could be deported. in south carolina, i met kids trying to learn in crumbling classrooms and neglected communities. and then there's flint, michigan, where children were poisoned by toxic water just because their governor wanted to save a little money. >> people listening to hillary

supporters in las vegas, nevada after a nevada caucus win for hopeful. >> and obviously we're still waiting for some word tonight on what's going on on the carolina. we'll follow that and have those results for you on eyewitness news at 11:00 or online before that. jeff, we want to get to you to talk about the weather. >> for once i wasn't the least popular person in the city. we head outside right now, what a beautiful evening we have going on after getting up into the low 60 d.c. beautiful colors as we look over toward midtown. that humidity at 35%. winds gusting up to 21. it's mainly been coming in from the southwest during the day today that's been pumping in the warmer air. normals around 33. we're way above that. not quite the record of 69. clouds increase tomorrow.

from getting too warm. i think they will probable still get up into the lower 50s. some rain moves in tomorrow night. this could be mixed with a couple of wet snowflakes if the rain moves far enough north. quiet on monday and tuesday. we have to watch tuesday night as our next storm comes in. it will be a significant storm. it could come in as a light mix west of new york city. we have temperatures only dropping into the middle 40s overnight tonight. 30s in many of the suburbs. clouds increased pretty quickly during the day tomorrow. i think that rain comes in right after dark tomorrow night. again, if it moves far enough north, it could be a narrow strip where you get wet snowflakes. we clear out on monday and the storm in the middle part of the week, it will keep it mainly in the form of rain. although it will start as a brief mix north and west of new

this kind of weather, baseball is in the air. >> i feel like i never left tampa. it's a very different spring training for the mets this time around. they head into the season. world series appearance will certainly have that affect. the amazings will be better this season. on paper. a lot of work will be put in. while it's only pitchers and catchers who were officially working out at this point, the entire squad feels it. >> it's a big confidence boost.

yankees camp. pitchers getting in a second straight day of work. the pinstripes got their first look at their new flame throwing closer. he is a welcome addition to a yankees squad that realizes -- most of the headlines go to the mets. that's just fine with the players who are just ready to put in the work. attention to it. i think projections are kind of tough to hang your hat on. they don't always come true. anything can happen in baseball. we have the pieces. we've got hall of famers in this locker room. if we show up to play, we can beat anybody. >> the knicks keep talking about their playoff chances. it's just the second month of february as they visit the timberwolves. last night.

basketball, falling to the nets by 11. it's their 7th straight loss. the nets showed promise with their win we need to play the way we need to play. we've been going out there and fighting. >> well, yesterday was a pretty big day for the net who is met their new manager. he comes from san antonio where he was the assistant gm. now he'll look to take the success from that franchise and apply it to the jets immediately.
