>> now, new york's number one news. channel 7 eye witness news. a race against time. police officers battle cold and the pitch black to save passengers on board a plane after it crashes into the long island sound. first, new at 11. he was simply minding his own business when a teenager suddenly knocked him out with a hard punch. tonight the victim is finally telling his story. good evening i'm sandra bookman. >> i'm joe torres. that attack so vicious it's left caesar badly injured and traumatized. he's now talking about that. >> eye witness news reporter sefan kim talked with him.

>> reporter: well, sandra and joe, caesar is a soft spoken man, small in stature and 125 pounds. he doesn't peek english and perhaps that's why the teens picked him as the target. if the goal was to intimidate him they got what he wanted. he's living in fear afraid to leave his own home. >> i couldn't speak for a week. i couldn't even speak to my family. that's what hurts the most. >> reporter: 37-year-old caesar says he doesn't know why it happened to him. speaking through a translator he says for eight days after the assault he couldn't eat solid straw anything. i don't like to pick on anybody with fear. >> reporter: it was this punch that broke his tooth and causes pain in the back of his head. it required stitches because of

it happened back in december in patterson. it wasn't until this video popped up on the internet earlier this month that investigators were able to look into the incident. 18-year-old christian gonzalez surrendered to police for throwing the knockout punch. the teen's attorney doesn't deny he's being encouraged to throw it but says his adhd could be a possible factor. he's charged with aggravated assault and endangering a person as a juvenile because he was 17. it's the latest in the trend of the knockout game >> translator: teenagers have a different set of mind. if i was to hit anybody it would hurt me as much. to them it's a game but to me it's real life. >> reporter: he had never seen the two before. he works as a street cleaner and makes very little money. he sends it to his wife and kids in guatemala.

he's got bills he doesn't know if he can afford to play. he doesn't understand why anyone would want to cause random people so much harm but he says he didn't want to fight back. >> translator: they looked really, really young. i didn't want to lay my hands on teens. that's why i didn't attack them. >> reporter: now he says he was a religious man but he doesn't forgive those teens for the pain they caused them. he has full faith the law will deliver justice. they're due in court on thursday. sefan kim, channel 7 eye witness news. >> thank you. the search for a missing passenger on board a plane that made an emergency landing in the long island sound will return tomorrow morning. crews pulled the wreckage out of the water tonight. three others were recovered. the plane crashed tonight. lucy yang is in the news room

>> reporter: it was a heroing crash followed by a dramatic rescue. tonight we hear from the quick thinking crews who saved three men after their plane landed in the waters off satalkit ie, long island. this is the plane being pulled out of the water. the small aircraft took off from massachusetts saturday night and was headed to republic airport on long island. around 11:00 p.m. the pilot reported engine problems and handed control back to the pilot who landed in the water. there were four men on board. rescue crews raced to the scene darkness. >> the only light we had was from a helicopter and as the helicopter continued to search you'd be talking to somebody 20 feet next to you and all of a you couldn't see them. >> they did dive in the water

victim in the plane. we conducted search patterns for the next several hours. >> reporter: with the water so cold and not a second to spare arriving police officers say they grabbed whatever kayaks they could find along the shore and went into the water. no time to ask owners for permission. >> one individual had a life jacket on but he was losing consciousness as well and the other individual was treading water until we pulled him to the kayak. >> reporter: thanks to the responding crews the pilot and two passengers were rescued. no word on the fourth passenger. >> if it weren't for the bold actions of the suffolk county police officers standing behind me and the fire departments, the firefighters standing behind me, we don't think the three individuals would have survived. we took bold action here. >> reporter: now suffolk county police called off their search at 7:00 tonight but will resume in the morning.

recovery effort and not a rescue. >> lucy, thank you. grief and confusion in western michigan after a deadly random shooting rampage. a vigil held tonight in memory of the victims. the horror began with one woman shot multiple times outside an apartment building. about four hours later a father and son were killed while looking at cars at a dealership and 15 minutes later four people were killed in the parking lot of a restaurant. the suspect under arrest tonight, jason dalton. an uber driver who was still picking up fares before it began. one passengers described him as extremely erratic. >> we were driving through medians and the lawn, speeding along and then finally once he came to a stop i jumped out of the car and ran away. alarm bells should have been going off in my head. still unknown.

uber is confirming that dalton drove for them but passed a background check and criminal history. new details about how the brooklyn. eye witness news learned ballistic tests show that the shot was fired by the suspect jamaal. the fragments that hit officer redden are still being analyzed. community leaders are causing for action to end gun violence. here's tim fleischer. >> they can shoot our mothers and kids or our police officers but we're not tolerating it. >> reporter: frustration is being communicated after a shooting when officers were struck with a suspect who had earlier been seen pointing a gun. >> our streets and communities riddled with bullets. we've got to get the guns off our streets.

converged on the car driven by 34-year-old jamaal fudis near malcolm x boulevard early saturday morning after he rammed his car into police. responding officers fired 30 shots at the car. funis was wounded and police found this handgun on the front seat. a nine year veteran had been struck in the hip and andrew rekuw was hit in the bullet proof vest. his father was saved 20 years earlier because of his bullet proof vest. >> let us thank god the officers are doing okay and that there was no loss of life. >> reporter: the mayor again spoke of the incident during a religious service. >> two of our police officers fired at and both came out of their ordeal. one walking around the hospital, thank god.

fully recovered. >> reporter: the mayor said officer redden wanted him to be aware when he was working on friday he helped to make an arrest in which they were able to take another gun off the streets. tim fleischer channel 7 eye witness news. we're going to turn to the weather. some showers tonight but even more rain expected this week. meteorologist jeff smith is here now with a first check on the accuweather forecast. >> the good news is tonight's area. at least the five boroughs. getting rain over long island, nassau and suffolk county. this extends to the jersey shore. look at the back edge. pretty quickly moving to the east and the south. one thing we're watching overnight, temperatures. they'll be falling. down to 46 in the park and lower 40s north and west and mid-30s in monticello. if there are areas of standing water north and west of the city where you get down to near freezing overnight there could

caught on camera a massive brawl. it broke out on stage during a hip-hop concert at webster hall. a concert goer sent us these pictures by a performance by skate. guards. no reports of any arrests. webster hall says the fight is under investigation. the woman who recorded the video says the whole thing began with a fight between two fans. >> two fans started fighting in the crowd so the venue stopped the music and turned the lights back on and then skate asked if they could finish the show. he's almost done. turn the music back on. security said no and skate kept

the fallen utility pole hit a woman walking along with her 2-year-old son. the little boy wasn't hurt but the woman in the cab was injured as well. the driver told police he swerved to avoid a collision. the incident is being investigated. the presidential candidates back on the campaign trail today. republicans have their eye set on the nevada caucuses this tuesday. marco rubio who finished second in south carolina and ted cruz both are vying to be the antitrump answer for voters. with his first place finish last night donald trump appears to be gaining momentum. the party will support whoever wins the nomination. >> it's our job to support that nominee and we will. yeah, we're prepared to support whoever the nominee becomes. i think it's early in the process. >> coming up at 11:30 the new controversy donald trump has

monday as being the best day of the week. in the weather world it will be. we head outside and we have rain exiting the area over long island and parts of connecticut and down the jersey shore. there's still rem anyones in the upper side of the manhattan. the streets are still wet and that will dry up. temperature dropping down to 46. this is after a high of 55 this afternoon. not quite as nice as what we had on saturday because we had more in the way of cloud cover out there. the rain exiting quickly overnight and a nice day shaping up for tomorrow. highs near 50 and a lot of sunshine. the next system is complicated. it comes in mainly as rainfall late tuesday into tuesday night. it could start as a light mix of freezing rain and sleet northwest of the city and we could have pockets of freezing rain into wednesday morning. this is a big rainstorm. significant rain possible wednesday afternoon into

maybe significant enough for localized flooding. 45 in newark and 42 at white plains and mid-30s monticello and low 40s on the island where you're getting light rain right now. nothing too heavy right now. this extends down the jersey shore. the back edge is quickly receiving to the south and east. by 7:00 in the morning temperatures around 38 in the city and a lot of sunshine out there in the lower 30s closer to freezing areas north and west. a nice recovery during the afternoon well into the upper 40s, above average. we fast forward to tuesday morning and cooler air trying to seep into the region. clouds start increasing and they day. by dark on tuesday we have rain breaking out south and west of new york city. watch what happens as the rain moves into a colder air mass. areas north and west of the city tuesday evening could have mixing issues. maybe snow flakes and freezing

this is a warm storm track with the storm heading up west of the appalachian mountains. accuweather forecast rain moving away shortly and clearing taking place late. we're down to 36. it is 38 around sunrise tomorrow morning under partly sunny skies and a nice day shaping up for monday. 49 for a high. partly cloudy tomorrow night and 33. here's the 7-day forecast. mainly cloudy on tuesday and 41 again by late in the day into tuesday night light rain moving in. that could be mixed precipitation and maybe wintery mixed precipitation. it goes to rain by wednesday and heavy rain by wednesday afternoon and wednesday night. 48 and an early exit for the steady rain and a lingering shower and 54 early and windy and cooler. it feels pr like winter again by next sunday.

here's a look at the top stories. police will resume the search for the body of a man in the long island sound. he's a passenger on a plane that crashed this morning. three other people were rescued. eye witness news has learned tests show the shot that hit nypd officer andrew yorku was fired by the suspect jamaal funezz. fragments that struck the other officer are still being analyzed. the suspect in a shooting rampage in western michigan will appear in court tomorrow. he's accused of killing six people at two different locations in kalamazoo.

and center in a defamatio lawsuit against her husband. >> tonight a judge denied an emergency request to delay the deposition. seven women filed a lawsuit and claimed he drugged or sexually assaulted them. lindsey davis has the story. >> reporter: tonight camille cosby is fighting back. filing this emergency motion to postpone her deposition tomorrow at a massachusetts hotel. cosby's wife of 52 years has been hoping to avoid answering any questions siting marital privilege. the attorney for 7 of his alleged victims says mrs. cosby would have relevant information because she served as his business manager for years. she argues she's had no involvement with the facts or allegations underlying this case and her public testimony would create an unnecessary media circus that serves no purpose

who got caught in strong currents auch the coast of washington state. a jay hawk helicopter crew sprang into action after they got a call two surfers were in trouble. a third person also got caught in the strong currents. the coast guard hoisted the three people out of the water and flew them to waiting paramedics. they're said to be in good condition. these are the remanence of a bus that caught on fire on a highway in chicago. it happened near the wisconsin border. the driver and 40 passengers were on board and they got off safely before firefighters arrived. most of the luggage was lost. the cause of the fire is under investigation. patience paid off for a set of twins in california. lauren and lisa have been playing scratch off lottery tickets for years. since they were 18. they never won much until this

should be mainly in the form of rain. parts of the region could start the next system as a wintery mix. we look a live shot over towards the empire state building. temperature is 46 and cloudy skies and the wind coming in from the northeast at 8. the rain has exited the five boroughs but you're getting rain over long island. temperatures not falling off too much in the city and we're in the upper 30s by the time the sun comes up with the north wind at 5 to 10. 44 right now in newark and 42 at white plains and you've fallen closer to the freezing mark at monticello. my only concern overnight would be some of the places that got rain well north and west of the city and standing water out there and temperatures down near freezing and could be a patch or two of black ice and that would be it. we're watching the rainfall exiting and nassau county raining over suffolk county and all the way down over the jersey shore it's exiting from there a couple of leftover showers.
