found in cardiac arrest late sunday night. ems first responders found the baby here at this apartment building on stuban street in the park hill section. he was rushed to staten island university hospital where he died. eyewitness news is learning hospital doctors observed possible signs of trauma on the body. neighbors in the building are still trying to learn what happened. >> i've seen the baby yesterday with somebody, one of the neighbors yesterday and i never usually -- they never leave that baby with nobody. >> reporter: police are now questioning a 31-year-old babysitter who had been carrying for the child. boyfriend. the baby's grandmother, eyewitness news is learning, found the baby unconscious and unresponsive in his crib. >> very unfortunate to hear of. >> they're expected to finish the autopsy tomorrow. reporting live in park hill, tim news. this just in.

confirmed two people have died in a multi-vehicle crash on the new jersey turnpike. it happened this afternoon at the westbound toll plaza in jersey city. one vehicle rear ended another, causing the second vehicle to get in to a head-on collision with a van. there are big delays for drivers coming out of the holland tunnel right now. want to go ahead and check in with shannon sohn. she's over the accident where you can see crews are still there. >> this is going to be an ongoing accident investigation. it's been out here since 3:30 this afternoon. it's really affecting both the east and westbound sides of the roadway. on the left side of your screen, that's your traffic heading eastbound in toward the holland tunnel. and truthfully all night that's been the best, really not too much of a traffic delay here. if you're traveling westbound out of the holland tunnel heading to the newark bay extension you've got only two lanes getting through that toll plaza at 14-c. look what this has done to traffic. the good news is word has gotten out about this crash and people

the bad news is a lot of people have to take this turnpike approach in. it's a rough commute. it's going to take you hours once you get out of the holland tunnel to get through this area. shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. be weary of the spring-like glory outside. yes, the sun is higher in the sky. yes, the warm temperatures can have us dreaming of tulips but not so fast. it's still february. today and the weekend may have been nice but things are about to change. >> the snow is going to have a tough time sticking in some places. right now it's still pleasant out. but the spring jackets, we're going to switch to. normal high, 43. gorgeous sunset. but the high clouds in advance

to roll in. there's our storm taking shape. it makes a move to the coastline tomorrow morning. i think we're fine for the morning commute but rain moves in to the area during the middle of the day. in fact, already some wet snowflakes over northwestern new jersey and eventually moving in to the hudson valley. the key time period will be midafternoon in to the evening commute. that's when the precipitation gets steadier and we get a wet snow over new jersey, hudson valley, connecticut. certainly some wet snowflakes in the air. at times could go over to wet snow and maybe coatings on colder surfaces. i think the roads in and around the city, points south, long island as well, we're talking wet. could get a little slick to the north of new york city. then things will taper in the evening hours. that mix is going to move in and around midday. get ready for wet weather that will last in to the evening. slushy coating to an inch or two. then it's round two, a heavy wind driven rainstorm coming in late wednesday in to early thursday.

well as more on tomorrow's snowfall coming up in the main accuweather forecast in just a few minutes. >> we'll see you then. >> rescue workers on long island searched the setauket island looking for a missing passenger that was onboard a plane in the long island sound. they're now calling it a recovery mission tonight. three other passengers were rescued. today we're hearing from the family of one of those men. eyewitness news reporter kristin thorne is in the section of queens with the story. perez' family say he's still in the hospital recovering. they say he was in the plane coming back from massachusetts after celebrating his birthday there. they're on their way back to long islan changed. >> reporter: on his facebook page, 23-year-old gursen negron says he works as a courier for fedex and that he recently graduated from the city university of new york studying

the search for the elmhurst resident is now a recovery mission in the waters of the long island sound around setauket harbor. that's where a small plane carrying him and three other passengers went down around 11:00 saturday night. the plane's engine lost power. police officers were able to rescue three of the men from the frigid waters but they were never able to find salmon negron. his family was too emotional to speak with us on camera today but told us they just want him to be found one way or another. emanuel bobadilla is the brother of one of the surviving passengers. perez. perez was still in the hospital today. >> they found a small blood clot in his head and they said it's not life-threatening but he's going to be able to recuperate.

involved in the recovery effort for salmon negron. suffolk police say do you haves should -- police say divers should be out of the water tonight. a broadway actress threatened tonight. her ex-boyfriend is also under arrest. actress joaquina kalukango plays nettie in the cast of the color purple. christopher horton was arrested outside the theater saturday. police say he had a knife in his pocket and had posted threatening messages on facebook and in texts saying, quote, somebody's going to die. thankfully that actress was not hurt. now to vote 2016. his negatives in the opinion poll far outweigh his positives. donald trump taking it by storm. one of his critics say trump has a good shot to become the next president. that critic, mayor bill de blasio. david evans with the story.

gone as far as to campaign in iowa for clinton. he's been a constant critic of donald trump. today the mayor went a little further in his assessment of the 2016 race. he predicts clinton will ultimately win but he admits trump has a good shot of winning the republican nomination and perhaps the whole thing. >> reporter: donald trump's on a roll, winning new hampshire, south carolina, the odds on favor in nevada tomorrow. and that has our mayor down right worried about the future. >> we have to assume he could be the republican nominee. we have to assume he has a legitimate shot at the presidency and take that seriously. >> reporter: of course the mayor is supporting hillary clinton. he predicts she'll ultimately win because clinton hasn't offended so many people, and because he says hillary is sane. insinuating donald is not. but the mayor says he understands why trump is doing so well. >> people feel cheated. they feel lied to. they feel the government hasn't been on their side. >> reporter: on saturday trump won south carolina's evangelical

to be ted cruz territory. >> tall people, short people, fat people, skinny people, just one. >> reporter: now cruz and marco rubio, both cuban-american, are to trump. >> we need to remember here over 70% of republicans nationally have basically said we're not voting for donald trump. super tuesday. that day. and that could become a sweep for donald trump. >> at this moment i understand why he's been able to fuel such support. i think it was a very good chance he could be the republican nominee. i think no one should underestimate him at this point. >> and today a big development in the republican race. ted cruz has fired his communications director. this after circulating a video from a student newspaper that incorrectly claimed rubio criticized the bible. there have been several other false rumors floated by the cruz campaign.

trump has called cruz a blatant liar. a judge in connecticut will decide whether or not to dismiss a lawsuit against gun manufacturers holding them to blame for the sandy hook massacre. the suit filed by the families of those victims. victim's family members say the company that manufactures the ar-15 rifle should be held responsible but the gun makers argue a federal law protects manufacturers from facing charges over criminal use of their products. taking a quick look at wall street right now where the week started off with a rally. the dow gained 228 points. the nasdaq picked up 56. the s&p 500 picked up 27. as we continue, a mother accusing a teacher of accusing her 7-year-old son and she claims it's not the first time he's done it. >> also ahead, a warning to drivers who use plastic to pay for gas at the pump. we'll show you one kind of plastic you should not swipe. >> something of a shocker in the offseason for football. the jets cut one of their

a shocking abuse allegation tonight against a teacher in harlem who's now suspended. osman kui is accused of throwing a second grader across the hallway. the incident was caught on surveillance video.

initially it's just going to be wet roads. notice our numbers generally in the 30s. 42, 7:00. clouds around the increase. 36 by morning. that means closer to freezing or below on the suburbs. fine through the morning commute. then rain and wet snow starts to move in during the middle of the day. gets steadier during the afternoon. there's the initial line of high clouds. there our storm over the gulf states. we rain in the evening. storm number 2 coming out of the southwest, takes a track to our west. we're on the warm side of the storm. we'll get up in to the 50s. the problem is a soaking and big time winds and even thunder as we go through wednesday night. here's the way things evolve tomorrow morning. notice how it's chilly tonight. 36, islip. 38 in belmar. clouds roll in. dry for the morning. although late morning, some rain starting to move in parts of monmouth and ocean county. moving in to new york city midday. snowflakes mix in.

gets steadier midafternoon, it goes over to a period of wet snow anywhere from the city northward, mixing with rain. could get a little slippery to the north. we're not talking about snow sticking to many surfaces. mostly awnings and car tops and maybe slippery spots north and west. tapers to rain drizzle and light mix tomorrow night. this is custom built in to the afternoon and evening commute. look for coatings to maybe an inch or two in colder surfaces. turning partly cloudy tonight. 35. 39 tomorrow with the mix developing midday. tapering to rain and drizzle tomorrow evening. then a light mix north and west with slippery roads. as we go in to wednesday you'll notice rain is lighter during the day but gets heavy at night. really pouring at night. even a little bit of thunder around. that will wind down on thursday. and the problem on thursday is that by the time we get to thursday morning, we could have two, three inches of rain around the area meaning standing water for the morning commute. things quiet down, blustery on friday. and the weekend, i think i'm

chapman could be facing discipline under baseball's new domestic violence policy but today apparently a personal day. all three hockey locals had had the night off. the islanders at minnesota. rangers and devils meet at the rock. a heck of a game yesterday at the garden. rangers and red wings went to overtime. henrique lundqvist stopped the shot on one end. kevin klein scores on a two on one and all is well that ends well. rangers get a big overtime win. back to work this morning for the rangers, there's at least better news today for ryan mcdonagh. he was back on ice today. he missed five of the rangers' previous seven games after he took big hits. latest one, an elbow to the head. ranger captain is feeling better. >> can't change the way i approach my game, with or without the puck got to do the same thing. just have to obviously hope that those things don't happen but maybe do a little bit better job
