temperature has warmed up now to 41 degrees. and we're looking at some other temperatures at noontime. they continue to warm up. we're looking at 43 around andover to montclair. looking at temperatures right around 44 at montauk, 52 towards toms river and 48 around belmar. so really today we're going to be looking at this rain building in and the rain with the wind coming out of the northeast, as you see 13 to 18 miles per hour, we're going to be seeing that continuing into the afternoon, kind of bill. the rain you see on the radar is pushing up from the south here, and so we're going to be looking at a wind advisory until 4:00 tomorrow morning. there's still a winter weather ulster county. that's probably going to be expiring now. everybody is changing over to rain. the rain extends all the way down into southern jersey. waves are in virginia, west virginia and into tennessee. you see this on our futurecast. we're going to be having a temperature of 54 at 5:00, some heavy downpours of rain during

a little while ago. but you guys took those down, you got the flames down? >> that's correct. 10:10 this morning we received a call for a manhole explosion and fire. units responded. on arrival we had a second second alarm. right now we have it isolated to two manholes. public services is on the scene, isolating the power. initially elizabeth police and entire area. >>reporter: yeah, 20 buildings had to be evacuated because, what, the smoke was coming up and causing a carbon monoxide scare in the buildings, is that right? >> that's correct. the fire in the manholes was pushing smoke into the structures. we've evacuated all the people, ems is currently housing all of those people behind us in the bus that you see. >>reporter: and this all happened because of salt crowing all the wires under the street. this happens all over the tri- state area? >> yes, this is not uncommon, especially after a hard wintertime. now we have a lot of rain, you're getting corrosion. it affects the wires.

an actual fire that was created due to electricity. once they cut the power, then the fire is going to begin to diminish. we're ventilating the whole. >>reporter: gotcha. >> public service will done entry, we have rapid intervention crews standing by for when they go in the hole. >>reporter: nobody hunter. that's the good news. thank you, chief, for coming out to talk to us, live in new jersey, michelle charlesworth, channel 7 eyewitness news. back to you guys in the studio. >> michelle, thank you. turning now to a series of frightening attacks overnight in new york city, including a stabbing on the subway that came after an argument over 50 cents. three people were targeted in separate knife attacks, one in the bronx and two in brooklyn. eyewitness news reporter mallory hoff is live in the east williamsburg section with the details on this one. >>reporter: shirleen, we're information. we've learned 27-year-old miguel colado has been charged in connection to the stabbing on the subway last night. now, we're toll the victim in that case actually walked out of the subway, walked five blocks here, checked himself

right now he's listed in stable condition. police say a 33-year-old man was stabbed while riding the m train southbound. the attack happened last night at 11:15 in east williamsburg. >> it's very, very scary. >>reporter: investigators believe the victim and the suspect, a homeless man, got into a fight over 50 cents. that's when they say the homeless man took out a pocket knife. the victim is being treated for two puncture wounds to the neck and a laceration to the hand. just hours later, after 2:00 in the morning, police spotted the suspect riding the m train. detectives say the 27-year-old homeless man had blood on his hands. he was taken into police custody. the victim told police he'd seen the suspect before. >> i don't feel safe. >> just have to watch where you're going and what you're doing and who's around you. >>reporter: less than an hour before the subway attack not far away in east new york on auto avenue, a man was standing outside when he was slashed in the face. police say a woman distracted the victim and then a man

the victim was not robbed. a motive is unclear. >> i just look over my back a lot, watch out for suspect characters and, you know, just make sure i'm safe. >>reporter: stay aware of your surroundings? >>reporter: just before 2:00 this morning, a man was slashed during an argument inside his apartment in the mont haven section of the bronx. slashings and stabbings in the city are up just over 20% from last year. mayor de blasio says it's important to remember that 1% of these situations are random. >> what has really gripped is could it be randomly something that happens to me? thank god the answer is it's very, very rare, and in the few cases it's happened, most of those folks have already been caught. >>reporter: these attacks come as the nypd is asking for help identifying this man. he's the suspect in the february 7th slashing of a 63- year-old bodega worker. he was slashed in the face by a customer. it happened in the clermont section of the bronx at east 170th street near sheridan avenue. he was treated and released.

about that case or any of these cases, you are asked to report it immediately. live in east williamsburg, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> scary stuff. thank you, mallory. another slashing suspect on the run from an attack at a bronx bodega. eyewitness news spoke to the victim. hear what he says happened coming up in our next half hour. investigators believe a portable space heater may have caused the fire that killed a 2- year-old girl in brooklyn. now the girl's mother faces criminal charges. police say leila aquino left her daughter home alone when she went to work as an exotic dancer monday night. she returned home nearly three hours after the fire broke out. her daughter, kalenah was found under a bed. aqiino says she left the child with a babysitter, but the babysitter said she no longer looked after kalenah after a dispute over money. a babysitter with a length yiz criminal rap sheet faces charges in the death of a toddler on staten island.

fleischer live on the st. george section with this. tim. >>reporter: david, at this noon hour, we are awaiting for the suspect, that babysitter to be walked from the 120th precinct. after that she is expected to be arraigned on multiple charges in this baby's tragic death. 31-year-old gloria fields as seen in these facebook pictures was charged with murder, multiple counts of assault, aggravated sex abuse and child endangerment charges in the brutal murder of 16-month-old anthony delgado. the baby an autopsy revealed died of blunt force trauma to his head and body. he was discovered unconscious and unresponsive sunday by his grandmother here on the third floor of this apartment building in the park hill section of staten island. the child's mother had left him with fields over the weekend. police are also expanding their investigation. >> we found that the babysitter had taken the child with her boyfriend to mat manhattan and we're getting video there of exactly her whereabouts there. >>reporter: a.c.s. officials have also said we are investigating the circumstances

heartbreaking and tragic deaths of this little boy -- tragic death of this little boy. police also point out that the suspect has a lengthy arrest record. she has been arrested they say nine times. reporting live in st. george, tim fleischer, channel 7 >> thank you, tim. new at noon, president obama sharing his views on a candidate to replace the late supreme court justice antonin scalia. the president's opinion is written in an entry he wrote in supreme court. the president says he wants to appoint someone who approaches decisions without a particular ideology or aend a. this comes as some republican leaders are refusing to hold hearings or prevent a vote for a new justice. the president says that is their constitutional responsibility to consider his nominee. donald trump celebrating his biggest win yet in the republican race, a 22-point victory in the nevada caucuses last night, marco rubio edged ted cruz for second place. abc's bazi kanani has the latest on the race for the white house.

we're going to be below that. half an inch of rain so far since the rain began yesterday. here we go. heavy rain this afternoon and especially tonight. the squall line is going to push through. about an inch to an inch and a half of rain, some localized flooding. could be a gusty thunderstorm tonight with some damaging winds, and that's going to be around 10:00 to midnight tonight. 44 at northport and massapequa. hauppauge 47. chilly spots are still off here to the north. the warm air is surging up from the south. you see it's already in the low 60s down around southern jersey. going to keep surging north of this warm front. you see this warm air kind of coming in from the east/southeast to the jersey shore, a northeast wind off to the north, so some of these wind chills are chilly. laguardia feels like it's 31 coming off of flushing bay, into the 20s here north and west. here are the visibilities we're talking about, very low. a mile and a half at teterboro, 1.70 -- zero visibility from my camera in newark, a middle school and a half in the field at the runway. in white plains about a mile. this slows down everything at

to find the z a way around in that low cloud cover and fog. wind advisory for tonight through 4:00 a.m. tomorrow and that's because this wind with this storm is going to really start kicking up here in the next couple of hours. so you see we have moderate to light rain now, and then batches of rain to our south. there's waves of rain here in the mountains of virginia. it will come with this low. the low center is in western sections of kentucky, tennessee. it'll keep moving through the great lakes. as it does, it surges up warm air and waves of rain. rainfall so far.20 bridgeport, quarter inch white plains, half inch in the park, .90 belmar,.30 to quarter inches out on the eastern end of long island. the heaviest rain is coming around 5:00 or 6:00 when the temperature is 55. and, look, there could be some embedded cells in here with very heavy downpours of rain right during the evening commute. and then tonight at 10:00 to midnight a squall line comes through and the temperature is about 58 and that means thunder and lightning and gusty winds and that can knock the power out, damaging winds, torrential

stories that were caught on camera and caught our attention. we're going to begin with party crashers making a mess and some violence at a birthday party at a chuck e. cheese in connecticut. investigators say a family was celebrating a child's birthday party at a chuck e. cheese restaurant in manchester when strangers showed up and started fieght. the fight led they say to an all-out brawl in the restaurant. suspects took off before police arrived. take a look at these ferris wheel gondolas, battered in 60 mile per hour winds. when the gusts calmed down at an iowa amusement park, the damage revealed. superficial. the rides ride's manufacturer repairing them now. no one was hurt because the park is closed for the season. and hard to believe no one died in this story. after a trooper in minnesota finished inspecting a semi, it speeding train. can you believe it? here it comes. the semi when it was hit dragged quarter of a mile, and look at this as we wait for

our top stories this afternoon, get ready for about 12 hours of rain. in fact, we could see flooding in some spots because of this storm. meteorologist bill evans will have another update in just a few minutes. at least two explosions under the streets in elizabeth bursting utility manholes. nobody was hurt, but 20 buildings evacuated because of carbon monoxide concerns. officials say salt leaked into underground wiring and caused those manholes, utilities underneath to smoke up. a homeless man is in custody for stabbing on the m train in brooklyn.

this deli on 170th street in the sheridan section of the bronx. now police are looking for this teen. does he come here all the time? >> he come in three times a month. >>reporter: i shall mail who now only has a faint scar on his head believes the teen was trying to scam them, asking for change for a $20 bill but claimed he had given him a $100 bill and was mad that he'd been shortchanged. he just hit him? >> yeah. >>reporter: you hit him and took him down? >> yes. >>reporter: so that happened at this deli right behind me. they say the teen even broke a glass on the window as he left. a lot of lot of the slashings recently police say are not random. only 1%, but the uptick is in the bronx. we'll have more on that coming up this afternoon on eyewitness news. for now reporting live in the clermont section of the bronx, darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> darla, thank you. you can see from darla's live

there, rain falling across the tri-state area and there are already delays at the airports. three hours at now, 2 1/2 at newark, two hours at kennedy airport. >> flooding could be a problem later on today. let's turn now to meteorologist bill evans to get an update on the accuweather forecast for us >> here you go, here's a look at the west side. you see the heavy rain coming down here. i just want to take a look at a couple other cameras here. this is the camera in astoria which eucialt gives us a pretty good view here and that's what we're seeing, low clouds, rain, drizzle, fog, reduced visibilities here, and our temperature here at noontime is 41 degrees which is right at our normal high for this time of the year. and we're at 45 already around bridgewater, 43 toward white plains and 55 in toms river. but as you were seeing, these visibilities are really reduced because of the clouds, the rain, the drizzle and the fog. the clouds right at the ground, that's actually what fog is. visibility down to.80 at islip, two miles visibility down the jersey shore. now, this evening and tonight we've got gusty winds coming, so a winds advisory posted

tomorrow. as we get more rain coming up, -- winds pick up, the low is back down here in western kentucky and tennessee. that's going to cut up through the ohio valley and with that waves of rain will come in. first really big wave of rain is going to come in about 5:00 to 6:00, so we're going to be seeing that lane of very heavy rain here then and then another big line of rain tonight 10:00, 11:00, toward midnight pushing through the area. this could produce another inch to an inch and a half of rain, flooding, gusty winds could knock out the power later on tonight around the area, trees and power lines, limbs and that sort of thing down across the area. then we're going to clear out as we get to tomorrow and the temperature starts dropping like a rock. it gets really cold tomorrow night and for friday which we will talk about more next in just a moment in your accuweather forecast. dave and shirleen, back to you. >> and, bill, that same system, that same storm system is part of a deadly tornadoes in the southeast. >> it caused a lot of damage and abc's elizabeth herr has more on that part of the story. >> look up, look up.

system is on the move up the east coast. >> holy cow! >>reporter: along the way leaving a path of destruction. in this rv park in st. james, parish, louisiana obliterated. >> i immediately took off running to help people. >>reporter: and in higher neighborhoods -- entire neighborhoods in pensacola, florida decimated. this 27 tornadoes reported in 24 hours across five states >> sounded like a train that was coming through here. >>reporter: people were inside this gold's gym in prairieville, louisiana when a twister ripped the wall right off the side of the building. >> employees and people just working out. we had about eight kids in the day care, definitely a scary situation. >>reporter: amazingly no one was seriously hurt here, but elsewhere the heavy wind and rain powerful enough to flip this tractor-trailer over proved to be deadly. and with dozens injured, the search is continuing for anyone who may still be trapped in the

[ no audio ] >> thank you, elizabeth. now to exclusive video of two port authority police officers forced to make a life- or-death decision when a man pulls out a gun at a train station in queens. the officer is confronted by a homeless man at the jfk air transit station in jamaica on monday. now, the man allegedly told the officers "i have something for you" before pulling out a weapon. both officers drew their guns and ordered the man to drop his. thankfully the man did surrender. the suspect admitted he was off his medication.

turned out to be an air pistol. former texas governor rick perry had a second and final felony charge dropped against him. the texas court of criminal appeals threw out the abuse of power case he had been facing since 2014. perry had always called the charges politically motivated. analysts believe the criminal cases helped sink his presidential bid which he ended last summer. a woman riding amtrak to new york got on the train with one ticket and got off the train with one newborn baby. her name is trinity kristina stokes. she was born on board after her mother went into labor and then went looking for help. she found a cafe car filled with people, but all were staring at their electronic devices. the mom-to-be grabbed the one woman reading a book. that good samaritan saw her through the birth and that is when the rest of the passengers started chanting "it's a girl, it's a girl." >> congratulations to them. coming up on eyewitness

airport. newark requires all commercial vehicles operating at the airport to have appropriate licenses. the city also plans to ban uber and lyft at newark's penn station. a bizarre story out of egypt. a 3-year-old boy sentenced to life in prison in what is clearly a case of mistaken identity. now, this is mohammed mashur mahira. a court sentenced him to life on charges that he killed three people and sabotaged private and public property in a 2014 anti-government protest. he was just 16-month-old at the time. authorities have since admitted they had the wrong person. human rights groups are hoping it sheds light on the flaws in egypt's criminal justice system. a condom controversy is brewing in california and it involves middle school students. the san francisco school board has a proposal to give the students access to condoms without parents knowing about it. the district says that 5% of active.

the rest of this afternoon, so heavy rain this afternoon, especially tonight, an average of an inch to an inch and a half of rain, localized flooding, gusty winds, could be a thunderstorm this evening at around 5:00 and again around midnight tonight. temperatures are in the low and mid-40s to 57 now at toms river. so the temperature will just keep rising. the wind is out of the northeast to east, coming in southeast, and that's why you get down to wrightstown and toms river it's so warm there, wind coming in. the wind gusts have been around 22, 25, 29 miles per hour. the park showing a 22 mile per hour wind gust. here's the visibility, a mile to 1.3 miles. that's not good. 1.7 miles around belmar,.80. show you the visibility forecast for the afternoon and you see that doesn't get a whole lot better as we go into tonight. so you'll have these delays at area airports through the evening. so if we look at it in minutes, well, it's over a couple of hours, 2 1/2 hours there at newark and three hours as you

nearly two hours at jfk, and an hour down here in philly. tack on another hour to be on the same side. so wind advisory overnight tonight. that means wind gusts 25, 35 miles per hour, maybe even 45 right at the coast. there'll be heavy downpours of rain coming in these waves from this low that is to our south. the low itself produces a lot of snow here in chicago on this side of the storm. the ohio valley getting a lot of snow. but we're on the east side. that's the warm side and most of the time the most dangerous side because you get squall lines and pockets of thunderstorms coming in through too, little cells like at 5:00, 6:00 this evening when the temperature is around 55 to 60. and then overnight tonight, 11:00, lee goldberg will be here, 11:00, midnight, 1:00 a.m., rumbles of thunder. they wake you up, knock you out of bed overnight tonight. and then tomorrow morning we start with a temperature in the mid-50s and that's going to be dropping like a rock all day long into tomorrow night. so we're looking in on the computer models. some spots may get a two-inch
