washington with the details. >> reporter: good evening. investigators believe eight of the 17 burglaries happened here in port washington. now they say they have the man they have been looking for. look at this mugshot now. this is 31-year-old [ non- english language ] he is a server at an upscale manhattan restaurant. he lives on bay parkway in brooklyn. he is now charged with 17 counts of burglary. he is a us citizen originally from the country of georgia. he is accused of stealing jewelry, purses and $30,000. he was initially arrested on february 20 charged with three counts of burglary then after investigators obtained a search warrant to obtain his apartment finding stolen items that connect him to 14 more cases. today he was arraigned on the additional counts of burglary. >> this defendant has been charged with 17 counts of

the driver led cops on a chase through lodi, rochelle park and paramus where he crashed into the house and the car burst on fire. after a foot chase the driver was arrested, a 25-year-old man from brooklyn. three people have been accused of attacking a teenager on long island. suffolk county police say two men and one woman stabbed and robbed a 17-year-old boy in bohemia yesterday afternoon. they say the three lured him into their car where in a struggle they stabbed him in the back and cut him on the neck. they also stole $750. a cell phone and a debit card. some of which was recovered. politics now. the super busy day on the campaign trail as republicans lobby voters on this final weekend before super tuesday. donald trump and marco rubio kept up the stream of relentless personal insults sparked by the recent debate.

a look at tonight's top stories. mourners gathered in bayonne to lay a new jersey high school teacher and his daughter to rest. the driver who hit their car on the new jersey turnpike this week faces charges. investigators say they caught the man who burglarized more than a dozen homes on long island. police say they recovered tens of thousands of dollars worth of stolen items from the suspects. >> hillary clinton and bernie sanders are fighting it out for voters in south carolina while focusing on next week's democratic races. doctors released yoko ono from the hospital. an ambulance rushed her to a manhattan hospital last night with flu-like symptoms. eyewitness news reporter stefan kim is live on the upper west side. stefan in.

her checking account and two credit cards. >> reporter: also stolen these checks two weeks earlier jessica had deposited them using chase's app on her phone. she even wrote deposited on each. a week after the account was restricted the suspects went to the bank and chase cashed both checks a second time debiting more than a grand from jessica's account. >> they didn't put a flag or restriction on my account and because of that they cashed the checks. >> reporter: her fault for not destroying the checks after depositing them. >> how dare this say that. >> reporter: chase advises to destroy checks a week after deposit. >> it's my fault. >> it's not your fault. >> reporter: chase refunded one check but not the other. we asked for an investigation. and now not just a refund, an apology from the bank that

a drag race turned deadly in southern california. the highway patrol says that two cars raced on the interstate last night. one driver lost control. the car slammed into a semi. the truck driver then lost control and that set the semi into the air. across the divider, it hit 6 other vehicles. the truck driver and two people in those vehicles died. one drag racer was arrested on the scene. police are searching for the other driver at this hour. home surveillance rolling during an explosion that is believed to be from a hoverboard. you can see how the flames erupted instantly. fortunately only the family dog was inside the house.

a new plan to protect fire island's coastline. new york state is looking to build a temporary dune that uses 20,000 cubic yards of sand. the governor says that this will strengthen fire island's natural defense against nor'easters and extreme weather. the coastal erosion and flooding have been a big problem on the island in recent years. good news about monarch butterflies. the insects vacation in mexico for the winter and experts there say that the population has increased 255% this year. the butterflies still remain at risk during their long migration thousands of miles into the u.s. and canada. >> did you know february 27th is a very special day for one particular animal? it is international polar bear day!
