could get slippery. coming just the wrong time but it's not a major storm by any means. cloudy skies, calm, clouds have been working in over the past few hours. we're a couple degrees above freezing. we're going to be able to drop below freezing overnight and that's why this snow will be able to stick. if you get in the middle of the night, that's when the snow could really stick. temperatures at freezing in white plains. belmar at 32. montauk at 31. winter weather advisory is only for ocean county. that's the best chance of seeing two inches, maybe even an isolated three-inch amount. it's a big area of rain and snow but we're watching this area of snow off to the north and watch what happens. first snow showers try to get in to southern new jersey. they see that big area of snow over pennsylvania which is going to have a in to the area. better chance for the city south and east. about 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning.

strengthens, pulls the snow from the coast and by afternoon, breaks in the clouds. here's what you need to know. snow or snow showers going to develop after midnight. slippery roads in places for the morning commute. especially south of new york city. and the snow will be winding down early afternoon well east. a trace to about an inch or two, best chance for seeing 1 or 2 inch amounts will be south and west of new york city. we'll talk about another chance for snow showers over the weekend. your 7-day accuweather forecast a few minutes away. >> eyewitness news this morning begins at 4:30 with the latest on the weather, commute, and any possible school closings or delays. new jersey governor chris christie is rejecting calls for his resignation. christie introduced trump then stood behind him during trump's super tuesday news conference.

christie to now step don. stacey sager is in fort lee with the details. >> the governor addressed his critics for quite some time today, nearly two hours. that's a sharp contrast with earlier in the week. and chris christie wanted it that way. >> i'm here. i'm back to work. >> reporter: chris christie pitched this as a news conference touting new jersey's lower unemployment rate but that's not the only thing sinking here recently and the governor knows it. his approval rating, once at 67% after superstorm sandy is now at 30%. why? constituents were pretty blunt. [ laughter ] he's an idiot. >> he should resign. he's not in the state anymore. he's not our governor. water boy. >> reporter: they're still shaking their heads over how the governor stole the show with this look on his face standing

>> so no, i wasn't being held hostage. no, i wasn't sitting up there thinking oh, my god, what have i done. >> reporter: christie says he endorses trump because he believes trump is the best of the remaining republican candidates. but -- >> i am not a full-time surrogate for donald trump. i don't have a title or a position in the trump campaign. >> reporter: so he promises he will tend to new jersey's problems such as the state budget, transit system, and he won't resign. six gannett newspapers then calling for the governor's legislation, not to mention the star which says he was gone more often during the start of this year. in any other job he would have been fired long ago. >> i don't think he has a commitment or belief in anything and that's what drew him to donald trump. >> governor christie spoke very strongly today saying he has been back from the presidential

>> it's my honor, real honor, and privilege to endorse mitt romney. >> reporter: today romney called trump dishonest and an embarrassment to the party. >> after all this is a candidate who mocked a reporter, who mocked a brilliant rival who happened to be a woman due to her appearance. >> and mitt is indeed a choke artist. >> reporter: today in portland, maine trump responded ridiculing romney as a failed candidate in 2012. >> he was begging for my endorsement. i could have said mitt, drop to your knees. he would have dropped to his knees. he was begging. >> reporter: romney also called trump a bad businessman who inherited his wealth and crassly brags about money. >> they don't want to talk about 92-story buildings all over the place. they don't want to talk about the bank of america building in san francisco.

>> reporter: john mccain said i would echo the many concerns about mr. trump's uninformed and dangerous statements. sarah palin on facebook called romney's hit an attack on conscientious, hardworking, patriotic americans. >> think of donald trump's personal qualities. the bullying. the greed. the showing off. the misogyny. the absurd 3rd grade theatrics. >> the problem here is perhaps party leaders don't like trump but voters do. he has dramatically boosted republican party turnout and it's going to be awfully hard this summer at the convention in cleveland to nominate someone other than trump if he continues to do so well in the primaries. it may boil down to march 15th. voters in florida and ohio could very well decide this nomination fight. >> the twists and turns in this election. tonight there are calls for changing the way suspects are jailed from new york attorney general.

death of a woman in jail in mount vernon. turner died two days after she was arrested for shoplifting. there was nothing done by police but the ag wants changes. cefaan kim with more. >> after a seven-month long investigation by the state attorney general, mount vernon police have been clear of criminal wrongdoing in the death of ray net turner, the woman who died in police custody last summer. it's another crushing blow for her husband. >> reporter: the husband of turner having to deal with yet another devastating loss. first his loss died last summer at a mount vernon jail cell. now the state attorney general clearing cops of criminality in her death, not the result of the investigation herman turner was hoping for. >> it's hurtful. it's very hard when you know someone for so long and they're

sometimes i still hear her calling me. and she's not there. i'm hurt by it. weren't the answers we were looking for. but that's the investigation. >> reporter: the mother of eight was in police custody for two days after a shoplifting arrest. the ag releasing this video taken from turner's holding cell showing the moments leading up to her death and the police response when they discovered her lifeless body. while the investigation found no crime, it does fault the civilian attendant whose duty it was to perform regular checks on prisoners. >> we found a prosecution for criminally negligent homicide would be unsustainable. it didn't mean we didn't find problems. >> in--person cell checks of people

she died of an enlarged heart with cocaine being a factor. >> there is really no good reason why someone arrested for shoplifting has to wait 48 hours in jail before being arraigned. >> city officials say all of the ag's recommendations are being undertaken. turner's husband says that's not enough. he says he's now considering filing a federal lawsuit. reporting live in mount vernon, cefaan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. more crime on the new york subways tonight and horror for riders this afternoon threatened by a knife wielding man on the train. shirleen allicot in harlem where it happened. >> i can tell you a lot of people are breathing a sigh of relief tonight. it all went down right behind me. the suspect caught and arrested here at the 125th street stop within minutes after threatening people on the 2 train. cell phone video shows police escorting 42-year-old james may

around 9:30 this morning. police say may entered the 2 train at 135th and lenox when all hell broke loose. when the train was in motion going southbound witnesses say he threatened them, told them he was going to shoot them, lifting up his shirt. passengers as you can imagine were terrified. we spoke to one over the phone who only wanted to be identified as andy. >> i just knew i had to call 911 as quick as possible so we could get the situation under control before it got worse. >> once the train stopped the nypd was there and may was arrested. it turns out he did not have a gun. police did find a 12-inch knife and some sort of baton. here's andy one more time. >> great job by nypd for responding as quick as they did they did. no one got hurt. everyone got to go home. >> lots of people relieved. james may faces several charges including menacing and criminal

balloon travel times for most commuters and shut down the trip to work for others. >> here's aj ross in newark with the latest strike contingency plans. >> reporter: the nation's third largest transit system is facing a major shutdown in just 10 days. with new jersey transit rail employees threatening to strike if an agreement over wages and health benefits cannot be reached. >> i think a lot of headaches, a lot of confusion and a lot of delays get in to the city. >> it's going to be a real nightmare. i just want to close my eyes and go to sleep and not think about it. >> reporter: nearly 105,000 customers rely on the services to travel in to the city daily. despite a newly introduced contingency plan, they admit a rail strike would have far-reaching effects. >> we'd not be able to provide the level of service or capacity that our rail service currently provides to our customers. >> reporter: while arrangements are being made for extra transit buses and private carrier buses to pick up and drop off

and ride locations, the plan still leads out six and 10 commuters who will likely contribute to congestion on the roads, rails, and ferries. >> a lot of people go back and forth using the transit. >> reporter: in a statement the spokesman says they've gone without a contract for five years and their proposed settlement demands are fair. meanwhile, governor christie who weighed in on the issue thursday said he's on the side of the people. >> what they need to understand, the commuters, is the money is going to come from them. any money i spend doesn't come from some magic place. it comes from them either in fares or taxes or a combination of both. i represent them at the table. >> just to give you a better idea about how this potential strike will affect commuters, transportation experts estimate an additional 10,000 cars per hour will be on the roads during peak hours. we're talking a lot of gridlock. live at newark penn, aj ross, channel 7 eyewitness news.

not a major storm but it's going to create some messy morning commute stuff. >> it's timing. it will be slippery so you have to take it slow, even if we're only talking about coatings to an inch or two. outside we have tonight cold temperatures and a beautiful time lapse here of just some of the high clouds coming out in advance of the storm. whenever we put filtered sun in the forecast, this is what i'm talking about. clouds begin to mute the sunshine. still see a little bit of the disk of the sun. otherwise we've turned cloudy. there's a current shop of new york harbor and lights of new jersey. 34 degrees. south wind at 3 and the high in mid 30s. we'll have no problem getting close to freezing or below. the snow can stick. record highs, that's in the mid 60s. we'll talk about that later in the 7-day accuweather forecast. 31 in hopewell junction.

these are the areas that we may get robbed of the storm going to our south where we see a couple flurries over the midhudson valley. you start getting in to rocklin and westchester, parts of the fairfield, maybe southern orange. now we can get some slick spots, coatings. more off to the south. second. we're clouding over tonight. snow coming in after midnight. the morning. cloudy skies at noon. gusty wind. temperatures about 39 or 40 during the afternoon but it feels colder because of the wind. clouds are rolling in. notice the snow coming in from the west. starts out that bright white color then goes to gray. we have a lot of dry air in place but some of this will eventually reach us later on tonight. next few hours are fine for travel. actually a lot of rain and snow here over the eastern part of the cnt. this part of snow here is driven

this is the dominant weather feature. by the time it gets to the coast overnight we have a small window. once that storm really winds up offshore all the snow is going to collapse to the coast and eventually move offshore. that's why by mid or late morning. 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning it's getting in to new york city. more widespread around daybreak. slick spots for the morning commute. not necessarily far to the north. then it's rushing to the coast the higher accumulations, eastern long island in to the south and pulling away after that. you're looking at an inch or less from the city on north. probably south of i-78, an inch or two. that could also be for eastern long island as well. your 7-day accuweather forecast looking like this. snowy start on saturday. we're in the 40s. little period of light snow saturday night, morning. then the big warmup. 50s, monday.

i don't think i said anything wrong. retiring lakers super star kobe bryant played in denver. didn't play the 2nd half. nuggets squad kept chanting we want kobe. at the end of the game he took off his shoes, signed them and gave them to a couple kids in the crowd. deflate gate rears its ugly head once again. nfl lawyers asking a federal appeals court to reinstate the four-game suspension. the league gave the quarterback tom brady for his involvement in the use of deflated footballs so many months ago. a lower court had the suspension lifted after that investigation. no brady today. no roger goodell. plenty of lawyers debating obscure points of contract law with a ruling unlikely for several months. although people inside the courtroom today came feeling it did not seem to go very well. we showed you tiger woods yesterday. we were focused on his golf career.
