snow is already reaching the ground across parts of southern new jersey. some indications this evening that a heavier band may reach new york city around 2:00 in the morning. the range in snowfall is going to be big. you're talking about no snow in some northern suburbs. maybe in ocean we pick up two or three inches. visibility still good. our temperatures are going to drop below freezing. we've stayed below freezing but we will get wet sidewalks. winter weather advisory is for ocean county. that's where we can see some of our higher totals in the snow. right now snow reaching in to ocean county. a lot of it not reaching the ground because the air is so dry. decent snows here near dc. snow off to the west is weakening. this is where we're going to get some of our snowfall from. watch what happens over the next few hours. watch this band over the ocean that may just direct toward new york city for a little while allowing for quick coatings

i've given my answer. i've given my answer. >> reporter: the debate on the fox news channel came near hours after republican's last nominee mitt romney eviscerated trump. >> he's a phony, a fraud. his promises are as worthless as a degree from trump university. >> we challenge you to answer with substance, not insults. how do you answer mitt romney, sir? >> look, he was a failed candidate. he should have beaten president obama very easy. he failed miserably. >> reporter: this was the first debate without ben carson who has signaled he'll drop out of the case. john kasich, a relative moderate in the group, tried to be the voice of calm, claiming he has the best chance of beating hillary clinton, the likely democratic nominee in the fall. >> throughout this campaign i've talked about issues. i've never tried to go and get in to these kind of scrums that we're seeing here on the stage

you seem to be the adult on the stage. >> some in the establishment are openly strategizing on how to deny trump the delegates he's earned at the republican convention this summer to block him from getting the nomination. as a party once lotted for unity now descends in to civil war. >> or uncivil war. saturday there are caucuses in kansas, maine, kentucky, a primary in louisiana. amid calls to resign for being an absentee governor, chris christie says he's keeping his job but needs more time off and will continue stumping for donald trump. >> i have no current plans to go out on the road with him again but i will at some point i'm sure do so. the only plans i have to go away is to finally take a few days off. >> seven newspapers in new jersey have called on christie to resign since his endorsement for trump. a recent poll shows christie's approval rating has now dropped to 27%.

tonight for the senseless murder of a man in the bronx, a minor dispute ending in a deadly stabbing. 54-year-old eric ortiz stabbed 27-year-old christopher cabrera week. both distributed fliers for a cell phone store. ortiz didn't like the way cabrera did his job. >> he was a quiet guy and tried to go ahead and get a job. >> he was an intelligent child all his life. and now he left a child of eight >> cabrera's mourning family may. now to exclusive new video obtained by eyes news showing a car crashing in to a staten island hair salon but it was who was inside the car now leading to an investigation. suspended. eyewitness news reporter jim dolan with the wild video and reaction from the salon owner. >> we don't know if the two detectives and the lieutenant

the bar next door before the accident, what we do know though is that what happened next on control. it was a thunderous crash. then blaring horns and sirens. within a few seconds somebody tried to back in to the car with such force that it didn't stop till it hit the back wall. the driver of the car tried to drive right back out but apparently got stuck and this is the scene crystal macnair saw when she got to the hair salon she owns. >> to the wall. >> reporter: as macnair has cleaned up since, she still can't get rid of the tire tracks and some of the other damage made by the car that was apparently driven by a member of the nypd. two other members of the nypd were allegedly passengers in the vehicle. none of whom were there when on-duty police arrived at the scene. nypd lieutenant and two

without pay during the investigation. >> we've only been open not even a year yet. this is all fairly brand new. that's what was more upsetting. but yeah, my floors are damaged, my walls are damaged. i have stylists that are out. eight stations were damages. six stylist stations, two makeup stations. my reception area was down. >> reporter: there's a bar next door but someone who identified himself as the owner's husband said he would not comment about whether the police officers were drinking at the bar. crystal is just 31 years old. she's been saving to open her own store for 14 years and this is her dream, or was, before. >> i don't know what happened to them. i don't know who did it that night. i don't know what happened. i just know they weren't here when i got here. >> reporter: no one has been charged criminally yet in this manner but we do know the two detectives and the lieutenant from the nypd as we said have been suspended without pay.

in damage to her store. in staten island, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. new details tonight about a deadly crash in new jersey. one car, two people dead. newscopter7 over the scene in blarestown during eyewitness news at 6:00. a car with three people inside it went off the road and hit a tree. two women, passengers of the car. they died. woman who was driving now in serious condition. happening tomorrow, the sentencing for sal perrone in the execution style murders of three shopkeepers. the 67-year-old staten island man was found guilty. the victims' family members are expected to make statements before sentencing. he faces 75 years to life behind bars. charges drop from five teenagers in brooklyn erroneously convicted of raping a young woman. she recanted her story. she claimed she was attacked by

playground in brownsville with her father. the woman later admitted to having consensual sex with her father. a 250-pound man gun followed elizabeth gioino to her home. he pushed his way in and put his hands around her neck. she said she pleaded for mercy but he did not relent. >> i said please, leave me alone. >> after he robbed her he then robbed a neighbor. police say he's suspected of attacking a 71-year-old woman nearby three weeks ago. new jersey transit preparing a contingency plan tonight in case rail workers go on strike. there will be five park and ride locations set up across the state where commuters can get on buses in to new york. no new jersey transit trains

additional ferries and path trains. workers are threatening to walk off the job march 13th if no deal is reached. you can see full contingency plans on our web page, abc7ny. closing arguments expected tomorrow in erin andrews' $75 million lawsuit against two hotel chains. the host says the hotels shared the blame for allowing a stalker to take nude videos of her through peep holes of their hotel rooms. andrews claimed she suffered severe and permanent damage as a result of the videos. the hotels say they're not responsible for the stalker's illegal schemes. the white house urging north korea to scale back its provocative actions after north korean leader kim jong un order his country's nuclear weapons be made ready for use. just yesterday the u.n. security council approving new sanctions against the country.

he marched right up to his 74-year-old dad, peter manolio, sr., and admitted what he did. >> i was panicked because i'd never been in any kind of trouble before. i ran home because i was like so shooken up. >> reporter: police say the 23-year-old was turning on to highland boulevard from buffalo street in bay terrace wednesday night. when he says he accidentally hit an off duty police officer who was trying to cross the street. >> i said well, look, best thing for us to do is to go to the police station and turn yourself in. i said it's less than an hour from when the thing happened. >> reporter: the manolios say officers were so understanding. manolio, jr. is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to yield to a pedestrian. he's thankful the officer he hit with his car was not seriously hurt. dad and son tell me their already close relationship is

he was holding a loaded gun when it went off. he was shot in the face. police ruling his death tonight an accident. president obama may be leaving the white house next january, but he won't be leaving washington, d.c. for at least a few years. the president said today his family will stay in the nation's capital until his daughter sasha finishes high school. sasha, who's 14, is currently a sophomore. her oldest sister, 17-year-old malia, is a senior and expected to head to college in the fall. >> we'll see the obamas here quite a bit. it's not going to be too, too bad. >> no, it's just in those pre-dawn hours leading in to the early commute there's some slippery roads. there can be a few inches in parts of southern ocean county. some won't see a stitch of snow. visibility still good as we look from the empire state building, one world trade. 34 degrees. certainly cold.

a rare below normal day. we have lots of below normal temperatures to tell you about in the seven-day. these are some areas i think we can see snowfall sticking. wrightstown, snowing already. in the northern suburbs where it's certainly cold enough you might not see much in poughkeepsie. maybe a dusting or a few flakes in the area. in islip, a little snow expected. 7 a.m., areas of snow in the air. then just clouds by noon, even some breaks off to the noon and west. if we touch 40 on the thermometer, it will feel like 30s. we'll have breaks of sun in the afternoon. the radar showing snow in jackson and brick. i'm not sure if that's reaching the ground yet. message me on twitter and facebook. nothing is happening in new york city in long island yet. this not reaching the ground other than a flurry. decent snows here south of dc. that's where we're going to get some of the snow. see how it's more aimed north

this snow can remain as long as this low doesn't strengthen and it's just getting to the coast right now but what's going to happen is over the next 46 hours this is really going to wind up and all that snow is just going to be pulled in to, the moisture is going to be pulled in to that low and that will end our window for accumulating snows and that's going to happen by midmorning or so. let's take a closer look at it zoomed in. notice snow showers coming in to new york city 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning here. the biggest coverage with areas of snow, especially steadier to the south around daybreak and then starting to pull offshore by midmorning and looking at breaks during the afternoon hours. with that in mind, we're looking for little to no snow in the midhudson valley. some dustings here. up to an inch lower hudson valley, connecticut, new jersey. in to new york city, coating to an inch. 1 to 2-inch amounts, maybe an isolated 3-inch amount.
