estate where o.j. simpson lived when his ex-wife and her friend were murdered, one of the workers allegedly stumbled on something buried in the yard. that was 1998. suddenly it is the hottest story in l.a. >> guarding an alleged knife that may have been recovered possibly in connection to the o.j. simpson case. >> reporter: it's not an alleged knife. it's real enough. the question is it connected to the simpson case? >> we the jury find the defendant not guilty of the crime of murder. >> reporter: former football, tv and movie star o.j. simpson was acquitted of the murders of his ex-wife nicole goldman. the two were slashed with a knife in and around her home. now in a complex not altogether clear series of events a knife has found its way into police hands. >> whoa, slow down here. >> reporter: the case captivated the nation then and is still enthralling enough for

airing on the fx network. it may not be terribly relevant. >> no matter what this knife turns out to be it won't lead to o.j. simpson getting prosecuted again. >> reporter: ronald gold nan's parents released a statement saying the -- goldman's parents released a statement saying the validity of the knife relating to the murders is purely speculative. the knife was found by a construction worker and handed to an off-duty police officer who was working for a movie company nearby. that officer held onto it all these years until his superiors heard about the knife and he finally handed it over in january. again, it's not clear the knife is related to the murders. simpson remains in prison in nevada for a 2008 kidnapping conviction. it's happened again. for the third time in the last two months someone has phoned in threats to 12 northern new jersey schools this morning. a robocall was made to schools in bergen, passaic and essex counties.

evacuated or put in lockdown, no clues into who was behind. this. negotiators are meeting in washington trying to avert say strike by new jersey transit workers, officials and a coalition of 11 rail unions saying these are the final talks before the march 13th strike deadline. new jersey transit rejected a federal recommendation to give transit workers an average 2.6% annual wage increase he over the next six years. >> -- increase over the next six years. >> it is unfair to workers to ultimately continue to just say no and expect them to show up every day while they have to be able to take care of their families and their children. >> about 105,000 people use new jersey transit to get to work. yesterday transit officials unveiled a contingency plan that would only accommodate about 38% of commuters. the brooklyn borough president is increasing the reward in the search for a man who attacked an elderly woman. police say this man followed elizabeth jowino into her

wednesday, choked her and demanded money at gunpoint. eric adams is adding $100 to the $2,500 reward by crime stoppers and adams is giving $7,500 to the victim, which is the amount that was stolen from her. >> this is a bad person and he needs to go where bad people go. we call that jail. >> police say the same suspect is linked to another home invasion in park slope last month in which he attacked a 71- year-old woman. turning now to vote 2016 and the candidates back on the campaign trail after last night's fiery debate and they weren't letting up today on their over the top rhetoric. political reporter dave evans is here with more on what was said. >> hillary clinton today actually called last night's republican debate an insult fest but said the biggest insult was to the american people. you kind of expect her to say something like, that but at times they did talk over each other so much that it was kind

a brooklyn courtroom filled with emotion and fireworks, a convicted serial killer was sentenced today to decades behind bars for killing three shopkeepers, but what he did in court today had some people walking out. eyewitness news reporter stacey sager is live in downtown brooklyn for us. >> reporter: well, he is a convicted serial killer, but he rambled in court today as if he was trying a case, his own imaginary case, and the judge gave him the maximum sentence, 75 years to life. sal perron walked into his sentencing immediately looking over to address the relatives of his three victims, three innocent shopkeepers he murdered in brooklyn for no reason back in 2012, but first one of the family members asked about his father mohammed who was murdered. >> for what?

what did he do to you, man? >> reporter: then the victim who lost her brother. >> you are going to rot in jail. >> reporter: her father was the third and final victim. >> and only god knows how many nights i cried myself to sleep thinking about it. >> reporter: they came here for justice, but before they got it, questions. >> why did you do it, man? it's killing me. know. >> reporter: but it got worse. per ron like any other defendant was given -- perron like any other defendant was apologize. instead he pleaded an imaginary case for 25 minutes, condemned his own attorney. >> you can't go into the mines of these people -- minds of these people because it's like a swamp. you'll never get out. >> reporter: perron rambling

houston and bobby brown. the 22-year-old died after her face was immersed in water along with drug intoxication, cocaine, marijuana and alcohol in her system as well as medications used forrization or answering -- for sedation or anxiety. brown was found unresponsive in her bathtub january last year and would have turned 23 years old today. the cdc is looking for better ways to tackle the zika virus. the agency will hold a one day action plan is i he mitt on the topic april -- summit on the topic april 1st. there has been no evidence so far of transmission of the virus through mosquitoes in the continental u.s., but experts are preparing for infected mosquitoes to possibly reach the states as early as next month. a new study on the zika virus shows it can infect and harm cells that help develop the brain. researchers found the infection can either kill key cells or growing. those cells help build the part

birth defect known as microcephaly. experts caution this research does not entirely this. astronaut scott kelly now ha several months worth of tests ahead -- has several months of tests ahead of him, but before that happens the new jersey native took time to answer questions about his year spent on the international space station. >> i also have an issue with, you know, my skin because it hadn't touched anything for so long like any significant contact. it's very, very sensitive to -- it's almost like a burning feeling wherever i like sit or lie or walk. >> that's not good. as for that 1 1/2 inches he gained in space, kelly says due to gravity he lost it almost as soon as he stood on solid ground. >> 2 inches, 1 1/2 inches. i guess we're just not going to go. >> no. you're not going to get taller.

whiting about 4 inches. morris county only an inch and somerville only .8-inch. so once you got up into parts of central and northern new jersey we got lighter amounts. newark picked up around an inch of snow. they've had a tough time clearing out on the east end of long island and some snowfall and upper 30s in hudson valley and mid-30s in much of new jersey. the wind chills are generally in the 20s, but the wind will back off overnight. skies will clear. mostly sunny and chilly tomorrow morning, light wind. then look for clouds to increase during the day tomorrow and we'll finish on a partly to mostly cloudy note. still some clouds over long island, connecticut trying to back into new york city now, but that storm is a strong one. look at the lightning finally spinning offshore. once we get rid of that our winds will get lighter of high pressure builds in later on and we watch this area of snowfall that could bring us some snow later saturday night into sunday morning. it's really more predawn hours of sunday into maybe midmorning. so it's not going to impact your saturday night plans.

sunny. clouds come in. it could look mostly cloudy around lunchtime, then more partly cloudy during the afternoon. it's not textbook increasing clouds today, sort of variable cloud once the afternoon hits. we have should get in the low 40s. then we'll watch that clipper. all indications are the brunt of it is going to our south and west. it's a fairly weak storm. we're fine saturday night, just chilly. sunday morning at least a little area of the snow can break off and get into our western suburbs. this may be a little underdone. west of the hudson is a little light snow, same thing in new york city and down at the shore early sunday morning, then things improving in the afternoon with some clearing. clearing is what we have tonight, diminishing wind, maybe a few patches of black ice especially south of new york city. sunshine mixes with clouds tomorrow, not a bad day, 43 degrees, wind light, 5 to 10, 12 miles an hour. a late period of snow tomorrow

burkett is at the recruit centering with more. >> reporter: those prosecutors say the images of 11-year-old girls were downloaded into his home computer where neighbors watched the raid today in disbelief. >> they were talking to him over there and after that they all went inside the house. >> reporter: joe ellis watched as detectives raided his neighbor's apartment this morning. investigators say terrance cole downloaded thousands, maybe tens of thousands of pornographic images of young girls. computer crimes detectives monitoring child porn download sites discovered that cole's account had an extraordinary number of downloads. assistant district attorney shawna kerr. >> at one point based on the detective's investigation, he was the second highest amount of child pornography downloads in the state of new york.

cole worked as a u.s. army recruiter and he allegedly told investigators after his arrest, "there were five younger ones, but i look above." >> the detective, in fact, downloaded at least 645 images from the defendant's file sharing network himself. is that that's shocking, but, you know, he was an odd gentleman. so i'm not -- i am surprised and at the same time i'm not. >> reporter: neighbors say cole appeared to be living alone, although sources telling me he is married. he has no criminal history and is held tonight on $150,000 bail charged so far with a single count of possession of child pornography, but that apparently was just to get him through the arraignment. prosecutors say he could be hit with as many as 200 counts by the time the grand jury is done with this. live tonight in long island, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you.

news and ben carson right now announcing that he is dropping out of the presidential race. the republican contender saying that he's going to lead an organization that encourages christians to vote. carson was, of course, absent at last so this is not unexpected. of note, his campaign pulled in more money than anyone else's, $58 million. we'll have much more on what ben carson is saying coming up on eyewitness news at 6:00. also new at 5:00 an off- duty paterson police officer is facing weapons and assault charges in new jersey. prosecutors say 25-year-old donte gordon pointed a gun at 34-year-old travis mann at an intersection at a man and market streets in paterson last thursday. they say he then fired once missing a man. another person 36-year-old john smith was injured by a fragment or debris. in westchester county

flasher who expose himself at a school in heartsdale. police say the man went into a bathroom at maria regina high school last went and undressed and -- last week and undressed people. a criminal held in the psychiatric ward in the bronx is on the loose. 28-year-old torian coos escaped yesterday through the front door of the bronx lebanon hospital in mount eden. he was supposed to be supervised by two workers. he has more than 60 arrests on his record and was held on drug charges. closing arguments are underway tonight in erin andrews $75 million lawsuit against hotel marriott and her stalker. her attorney argued the hotel was at fault for not keeping andrews safe. they say andrews suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder because she knows people are looking at naked videos of her daily. the dangerous lead pipes

flint, michigan, are now in the process of being replaced. workers began digging up the old lead pipes this morning connected to water mains in home. the initial work is targeted lead service lines in neighborhoods with the highest number of children, senior citizens, pregnant women and others with compromised immune systems. >> feels great to know that people still care and are not ignoring us. >> the goal, my mission is to totally get the lead out of flint. >> on sunday democratic presidential candidates hillary clinton and bernie sanders will take part in a debate in flint focusing on the handling of the water crisis. former new york house speaker sheldon silver will not be able to keep so-called secret evidence from his trial, that decision reportedly from a federal appeals judge. the evidence actually was not admitted in his corruption trial, but there is a possibility it could be used judgment.

he will be sentenced next month. in queens the city has shut down the strip club where a knicks player was partying before he got shot. city investigators closed down city scape's gentlemen's club for violating alcohol control laws. the knicks player cleanthony was shot in december. then someone threw a molotov cocktail into the club. the nypd cracking down on people selling fake tickets to liberty island. this comes weeks after a tourist was punched for refusing to buy tickets in front of the staten island ferry. police will put officers by battery park where scammers are working and is the public is asked to be mindful of the potential scam. the first phase of the ferry expansion should be ready next summer to cover at store ya and rockaways in queens and south brooklyn. the project is well underway city officials say.

>> thank you, shannon. a metro north engineer who fell asleep at the controls of a train and caused a deadly crash in the bronx has been approved to collect pension benefits. william rockefeller's attorney said his client's sleep apnea caused him to fall asleep at the switch and led to the crash in 2013. it also makes it impossible for him to return to work. the crash killed four passengers and left 60 others hurt. a nanny in california accused of being a monster, a hidden camera showed her apparently trying to suffocate a 13-month-old baby because he would not stop crying. fortunately the child who had gone limp from the alleged attack is doing okay now. the nanny is charged with child abuse. police fear there could be more victims. a fiery explosion is caught on camera at a gas station in washington state. take a look. police say the 31-year-old driver likely fell asleep just before plowing into a gas pump.

a new clean-up plan unveiled tonight for the heavily contaminated passaic river. the environmental protection agency's plan calls for about 20% less contaminant river mud to be removed compared to a proposal introduced two years ago. the sediment would be taken to facilities where any material containing dioxin would be the result? the rest would then be buried in a hazardous waste landfill. >> big job. >> very big job. couldn't you move midweek back to this weekend? wouldn't be it great? >> we've had some really nice mild weekends and we'll have a great week next week. it won't be too uncomfortable this weekend. with your sunday morning travel

bullet from the livery cab driver's head, but the bronx man is still unable to breathe on his own. this surveillance video taken from a nearby business exclusively obtained by eyewitness news, you can see castillo in the upper left corner losing control just before the crash. cops say it happened around 5 a.m. when the married father of two young girls picked up four passengers from the bronx and dropped them off at club purlieu in astoria. he entered the club, quickly got into an argument with someone inside, then jumped back into castillo's suv as someone followed them out and fired several shots at them. castillo drove 2 blocks before crashing into several cars and eventually into a utility pole near 35th street and 37th avenue. police say castillo was operating without a livery license. >> he's been working about a month for this particular car service. we just need to speak to the car service and understand why if he is was dispatched from there.
