scene in news copper 7 with the latest. -- newscopter 7 with the latest. >> reporter: this is the old freight line that comes through this area and they are responding to the report of a very heavy smell of fuel. this also happens to be the area where the buckeye pipeline comes through delivering jet a fuel to kennedy airport. we do see a leak coming up through the ground here. the fire department clearly has their eye on this, but they are keeping their distance from it. again all we know at this point is that there is a confirmed very heavy smell of fuel in this area where the buckeye pipeline comes through. if you travel through this area, it is important you know this because linden boulevard is a very busy street. we'll show you the closure in place here at gaston boulevard. you can see a tremendous amount of traffic behind that on the other side heading to the east side of this closure. the closure is in place at snedeker avenue. taking it up to new lots avenue really gets around this without

this will be shut down for some time while they investigate what is causing this smell of fuel coming out of the buckeye pipeline. shannon sloan, eyewitness news. >> keep us apprised of any new developments. we'll bring it to you on eyewitness news at 6:00. more breaking news, two teenagers shot in crown heights, one of them a 14-year- old girl. >> eyewitness news reporter carolina leid is at the scene with the very latest. >> reporter: liz, bill, we are seeing several blocks in multiple directions shut down, actually cars just now allowed to come down here on franklin avenue. is in a very incredible police scene now as police are trying to find the suspect in this double shooting that happened just before 4:00 this afternoon here in crown heights right outside of 1000 presidents street at the corner of franklin avenue. the angle. an 18-year-old boy was shot in the calf. both were

threatening injuries. so far no word on any suspects in this case or what sparked the shooting here in crown heights. we're told that there are two nearby schools. one of the victims attends a nearby middle school, the other the nearby high school. they do not know each other and the department of education says that this is not school related, but as you can see, there is a crime scene here, of course, tape blocking off multiple blocks here in this area, at least from what i count at least a dozen police officers here working on this crime scene. reporting live in crown heights i'm carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. more tonight on channel 7 eyewitness news at 11:00. now to the new jersey transit strike talks and strong words tonight from the nation's third largest commuter railroad. >> jobs will be suspended and health benefits ended if 4,000 new jersey transit workers go on strike sunday morning. >> are the talks suddenly

reporter toni yates in newark for us. toni? >> reporter: bill and liz, some union representatives left that meeting with new jersey transit earlier than others. in fact, around 4:30 this afternoon we saw several of them storm out. they wouldn't tell us why. a few minutes later it was evident. union representatives not happy this afternoon after new jersey transit issued a statement detailing what would happen to rail workers if this strike happens. >> all existing positions will be suspended. all employees on sick leave will no longer receive sick leave compensation and all strike employees will have their health, their insurance benefits discontinued effective the first day of the strike. we object to new jersey transit's conduct in this matter while the parties are fully engaged in negotiating process. >> we have a common goal to reach that conclusion in a timely fashion so that the

from the heads of the commuters and they can go back about worrying about all the things that the rest of us worry about every day and don't need to worry about how am i going to get to work and get to the doctor? >> reporter: new jersey transit said it released that detailed breakdown of what rail workers would lose while they are on strike only because it is required by federal law to disclose that information, both parties meeting at the hilton in newark again tomorrow morning. now live here in newark, toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> so much at stake, thank you. now to the man youngly convicted, andre hatchet. when he was 49 years old, he was sent to prison for a murder he did not commit, george bush was president, the first president bush. >> the beating and murder of a brooklyn woman in 1999, today the conviction was overturned. prosecutors admitted he never

>> eyewitness news reporter jim dolan downtown with this amazing story. >> reporter: andre hatchet was convicted of murder almost 25 years ago. while he was in prison his mother died, his brother died and what should have been the most productive years of his life slowly drained away in a prison cell upstate. it turns out, though, andre hatchet didn't kill anyone. 49-year-old andre hatchet walked outside a free man today smiling now after half his life in prison, half his life gone do with. >> i know i didn't do it. day. dismissed and sealed. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: one day was this day. hatchet it turns out isn't a killer, after all. he's a victim. >> you sat down and looked at there file and just said oh, my god, right? the police screwed up. the job.

convicted for the 1991 murder of 38-year-old nita plea carter in a bed-stuy -- mae carter in a bed-stuy park. a man who admitted smoking crack earlier on the day of the murder is believed to have committed the crime. hatchet was physically incapable of the brutal murder back then because he himself had been shot several times a month earlier. prison took its toll. >> i lost my mother here, my little brother, my parents gone. >> reporter: hatchet has no grand plan for freedom yet, but he has plans. >> i just want to be with my family and go eat. >> reporter: mr. hatchet will be getting barbecue for his first meal and for the way he makes it sound for a lot of meals after that. a lawsuit to compensate him financially for all those lost years is likely.

reporting live from downtown brooklyn, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. dorothy woke from her dream about being in oz and tonight we'll awake from our dream of this junelike weather. adios, junelike weather, some rain on the way, nothing torrential. lee goldberg outside our studio, flowers all over the place starting to sprout. >> reporter: crocus and daffodils and people sneezing because of the tree pollen. i miss the sweet sound of the ice cream truck that just went by. record highs today just updated, 81 in newark, 79 in central park. these records are from 2006, laguardia and islip also record highs, 80s in belmar and toms river, normal high 48, so running way above average more than 30 degrees. we're still really warm in many spots tonight from the city south and west but cooling off especially in the north. there are showers over sullivan and duchess county and now over northern new jersey. in the hudson valley and northern new jersey have the umbrella now and in a few hours

york city and late tonight in long island and probably southern new jersey as well. the rain stays mainly north and west at least the next few hours and widespread rain from 10:00 tonight to maybe 4 or 5 a.m. 1/4 inch of rainfall for your morning commute and we'll usher in cooler air, back to april levels. lower 60s with sunshine. the rest of the seven-day accuweather forecast we'll tell you how we warm up over the weekend, talk about the early allergy season coming up in just a few minutes. back to you for now. a mystery tonight in connecticut, a woman is in critical condition in a medically induced coma after she was found at a train station in stanford. police are trying to figure out how she suffered serious wounds to her head and face. eyewitness news reporter marcus solis is live tonight with the investigation. >> reporter: investigators

starting from scratch. because of the victim's medical condition, they haven't been able to ask her what happened. >> we are treating it as a criminal act because we don't know what we have. >> reporter: investigators admit there are more questions unanimous answers. police -- than answers. police know a 30-year-old woman fell from these steps, but was it an accident or was she pushed. she was found 6:45 tuesday morning in the back of 67 henry street. >> over in this part of town things happen like this, but close to home. me. >> reporter: initially the incident was handled as a slip and fall, but the victim's injuries were determined consistent to being thrown from the open air staircase. that's when police got involved trying to figure out what she place. >> that's the other part that's a mystery. she lives in the east side. this is on the south end of town. >> reporter: a tipster told

hours earlier at the stanford train station. detectives reviewed surveillance video and confirmed she was there alone around midnight. six hours later she was found at a location where there are also surveillance cameras, but these do not work. >> at this point until she regains consciousness there's nothing. there's no video. we have very little to go on. >> reporter: police do have the names of a couple people they want to talk to, but they are asking for the public's help. anyone with any information is urged to contact police. marcus solis, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. the news continues on eyewitness news at 6:00 on this very busy thursday night, so what caused the huge pavement damage that led to big delays at laguardia last night? we get some answers tonight. >> breaking news in the new lot section of brooklyn where there is a hazmat situation, the fire department investigating an

again a hazmat situation, shannon sloan over the scene. what's the latest? >> reporter: we now know there was, in fact, a break in that buckeye pipeline that takes jet a fuel to kennedy airport which left that fuel spewing up out of an old abandoned rail line here along linden boulevard. so it was a mess. they did report there was a very bad odor of gas through the area which makes sense since that gas was spilling up. now what we know at this points is that they isolate -- point is that they isolated the problem and shut off the valve. there is no more fuel spewing up. they do have to bring in foam trucks to clean up whatever came out. you can see linden boulevard alive with fire department actively shut down completely between snedeker avenue and gaston boulevard. at least now they have the situation under control. it will stay like this for the foreseeable future. reporting live over new lots, shannon sloan, channel 7 eyewitness news.

port authority says it knows what likely caused an 8-foot chunk of runway to come loose last night at laguardia airport causing massive delays and flight cancellations. it's believed the warm weather and jet blast from engine caused a 2nd of coating that protects the runway -- a section of coating that protects the runway to break up. a pilot reported seeing debris. the runway shut down so repairs could be made. just ahead lee returns with a little bit of rain in this -- >> you got it. >> -- picture perfect.

>> normally in march we go back to 30, the normal highs in the month, the upper 40s, but not this time. we're going back to this great weather tomorrow which is more like mid-april. we have a great looking sunset over new york harbor, maybe not as wonderful as previous days, a little more cloud cover, but holding off on the rain at least for now. we have mostly cloudy skies, rain north of new york city, our temperature at 6:00 is at 76. the humidity is climbing and the barometer is on fall. the high today 79 degrees. so that's the new record, 79 this year. it all started with our morning low 63 degrees. that's the first time we've had a 60-degree night in march since 1998, 30 degrees above average. that's what you would typically find on a june night. 64 montgomery. hope well junction, rain, 59, pair of 5's in monticello, 58 on the island, cool here, not because of rain but because of the ocean breeze and we're

had 80 degrees on the ocean shore. i think 9:00, 10:00 all bets are off for rain in new york city. have your umbrella if you head out this evening. you could probably wait until 2 a.m. if you're out that late through monmouth county. the rain ends predawn, clouds early breaking for sun quickly, nice breeze, low 60s, feeling like 55 tomorrow. you need the spring jacket. our steadiest showers to mt. pleasant fairly light. it's been raining over the catskills into vernon, new jersey, so really north of i-80 and new jersey, a couple sprinkles near greenwich and stanford but nothing heavy. eventually this rain collapse down in the area. it's connected to incredible rainfall. they've gotten over a foot of rain in parts of louisiana and arkansas, water rescues and flooding. we're fortunate to get just light rainfall as this bends in on the area going through the late night. figure the next couple hours

evan is, close to 10 -- i-287, close to the bronx by 10:00. then overnight about 1/4 inch of rainfall, but it's leaving and probably offshore by 4 or 5 a.m. leftover clouds early especially along the coast. quickly the shine comes out and we've got a cool breeze. the numbers tonight are beautiful. tomorrow morning we're in the 40s and 50s. we get to the low 60s with a pretty good breeze and it feels like 50s. 56 overnight, cloudy and mild, rain developing northwest to southeast, becoming sunny quickly tomorrow, but a cooler breeze. 43 tomorrow. you really notice the cool air coming in. 63 on saturday, but saturday morning we've got widespread 30s in many suburbs. so the chill is back but overall a nice weekend, partly sunny saturday, more cloud sunday, the bulk of the day dry, maybe drizzle at night. it's rather damp and cooler early next week, but still in

but this week it's time to get going. anthony baldwin pitching for the blue jays, first action since last season. one big highlight, ben gamel in center field lays out to make the catch. now to the other pitcher, chapman suspended to start regular season, made his spring debut, pretty ugly, 2/3 inning, 26 pitches, nine strikes, hit two batters, walked two before it was done. yankees lose 11-4. chapman just did not have it today. it's a split squad day for the yanks, the rest of the fellows in sarasota playing the orioles. yankees go on top. bryan mitchell was pitcher, couple strikeouts. this ends up a 4-4 spring training tie. let's go to port st. lucie, mets against the cardinals, met fans with a chance to see noah cinderguard's spring debut, three scoreless innings on 38 pitches.

out with a sore knee. the mets bring in ruben tejada to take his place who smacks a two-run home run for the mets and we have this reminder. it is still spring training. mets beat the cardinals 7-2. one day after the giants $200 million nfl free agent shopping spree the team signed their three new players. addressed defense and bring in a pass rusher, olivier vernon from the dolphins. the giants needed help from the secondary. here comes the tough durable corner gentleman norris janoris jenning -- janoris jenkins from the rams. apparently the jets are in a stalemate with quarterback ryan fitzpatrick. they want him back but at the right price. there's word the jets have called the 9ers to inquire about colin kaepernick's
