erupted. police and protesters doing battle because political tensions have reached a boiling point. it all started inside the university of illinois pavilion where 10,000 had gathered to see donald trump. not all of them trump supporters. then as abrupt pronouncement. >> for the safety of the tens of thousands that have gathered in and around the arena, tonight's rally will be postponed until another date. thank you very much for your peace. >> reporter: instead -- all hell broke loose. >> [ bleep ]! >> we want trump, we want trump! >> reporter: the clash continued even as the crowd spill the out onto the streets.

on people angry at washington. >> we are a country that's so divided that maybe even you don't understand it. i've never seen anything like it. >> reporter: then he told cnn he's only seen love at his rallies. >> nobody's been hurt at our rallies. >> reporter: the tension between trump lovers and trump hat haters building for weeks. >> get out of here. out. >> reporter: fayetteville, north carolina, a demonstrator being escorted out of a rally got sucker punched by a 78-year-old man. john mcgraw told "inside edition" he'd be tempted to throw more than an elbow. >> the next time we see him we might have to kill him. >> reporter: he's now charged with assault and battery. initially the crowd did nothing to stop him. protester told abc affiliate wtvd he was there peacefully and aside from protesting, he did nothing to provoke the man. >> it feels the other way around it would have been a different story. >> reporter: at that same rally

>> there's only one presidential candidate who has violence at their events. and i do think donald needs tos. and take responsibility for the fact that some of the rhetoric he has used could potentially be contributing to this environment. that is growing increasingly disturbing for a growing number of americans. tonight ted cruz called it a sad day for political discourse. >> when you have a campaign that affirmatively encourages violence, when you have a campaign that is facing allegations of physical violence against members of the press, you create an environment that only encourages this sort of nasty discourse. >> reporter: tonight trump insists he's the victim. >> all of the trump supporters have been really treated unfairly because first amendment says we have a right to speak. we have a friendly rally, we have a right to speak.

that right of freedom of speech. >> reporter: tonight the u.s. secret service and the chicago police both insist they didn't pull the plug on this rally, nor would they have recommended doing so. the decision to cancel, they say, is trump's and trump's alone. protesters did accomplish what they set out to do. the guy who was pulled off that podium spoke with abc's chicago affiliate wls before the whole thing kicked off. >> i can't speak for anybody else but the hatred, the bigotry, the racism that he has, that he has promoted, is going to get a great interruption by a lot of people. we're very upset at his agenda. >> reporter: tonight campus police ended up separating the two sides, the trump supporters contained in a parking garage, the protesters outside. keep in mind, this was just a trump rally. the gop establishment is now talking openly about contesting

the house, let's talk, you know. i was just so desperate i went over there. >> reporter: moments after hogan arrived, he says clem's wife grabbed his hand and led him up the stairs to the bedroom. >> from the feeling i had, bubba, you're not filming this, are you? and he just lashed into me, what the hell's wrong with you, i'm your f'ing best friend, how dare you say that to me. >> reporter: five years later a tape of that night is posted by gawker. hogan says he didn't even believe his friend clem was in on this either until later that day. a bombshell. >> when they confirmed that bubba was on the tape and bubba went up and turned the camera off and bubba told heather that, this is for our retirement, heather. i just started violently shaking. >> he later settled a lawsuit with clem, who apologized for stating that hogan knew he was being taped. but hogan has refused to settle this one saying gawker, by publishing the tape, violated his privacy.

laugh is like tinkling bells. all over. >> reporter: journalists and celebrities, from tom selleck to mr. t., who joined nancy reagan in her "just say no" campaign. his lap? in the front row families of current and former white house residents arranged just as nancy reagan had planned it. first lady michelle obama seated right next to president george w. bush and former first lady laura bush. hillary clinton and laura bush sharing a knowing look over anecdotes of nancy reagan's fierce defense of "heron ronnie." >> as a couple they were more than the sum of their parts. it would be a mistake to consider her somehow subordinate to him just because he was the one usually taking center stage. they were co-equals. they complemented one another. >> reporter: in their eulogies, her children and especially daughter patty focused not on her love for them but her love for the president.
