a van stolen with a baby inside. but this carnapping takes quite a twist when the terrified father texts the phone he left inside and the thief writes back with a message about the baby. >> a family finds this cross on their front yard. tonight police are investigating. first at 11:00, his job was to help teach martial arts to children. >> tonight he's accused of sexually abusing and touching young female students. >> jim dolan with the story in

old. lorenzo ramos had been teaching young girls martial arts for at least half a dozen years and the place he worked most recently claims he passed an extensive background check but prosecutors say ramos sexually abused four of his students. the abuse happening over the last year. three counts of sexual abuse. eight counts of forcible touching. 20 counts in the indictment against him. da richard brown said ramos offered money to three of the girls and in one instance to one of the 14-year-old victims stated don't say anything because both of us will be killed. ramos' defense attorney says mr. ramos vehemently maintains his innocence. his boss trusted him so much that when he opened another location he took mr. ramos with him. that may be true.

want his face shown. >> we're mad and very upset. we're happy he's behind bars. he's not going to do anything else to any other child. >> at least four victims that police know of. 12 and 14 years old. ramos according to the dojo, ramos was fired in february for financial irregularities and that's when the girls came forward. police are hoping anyone else will come forward now. from queens to brooklyn, a little girl found lifeless in a bathtub there. tonight no official ruling on the cause of death. but police say it appears 2-year-old melody phang drowned in her home in sunset park. her parents are being interviewed by police. no charges have been filed. there's no history of abuse in that home.

has been placed with child services. streets flooded. a sinkhole swallowing a street hole. now a boil water advisory. crews are on the job tonight digging up the road, trying to make a repair to the 12-inch main. it ruptured before dawn on 1st street. a nissan maxima got swallowed up when the pavement gave way. protests planned tomorrow at school headquarters in new brunswick, new jersey, to support a teenager savagely beaten by a fellow student. oscar assaulted he says by a wrestling team member, apparently mad over a girl. he fractured his nose, sprained his shoulder and lost a tooth. his family says the school did not handle the incident properly. >> there was a female security guard, in the video you can see her. she was witnessing the whole thing going on. that school never tell me oh, you need the ambulance or

>> school officials tell us and insisting protocols were followed. students who attacked oscar faces assault charges and was suspended. public schools in poughkeepsie will be closed tomorrow to allow students to attend the funeral of a popular high school athlete gunned down after leaving a game. 18-year-old caval heyaylett. it appears he was not the intended target. police have made no arrests. a remarkable settlement tonight for the family of dj henry, the pace university student shot and killed in 2010 by a cop in westchester county. the officer never charged but the town of pleasantville where he worked tonight paying out $6 million. that's more than $850 for every man, woman, and child in pleasantville. eyewitness news reporter carolina leid in thorwood where the shooting happened. >> dj henry's mother explains this will not bring back her son

will be using this money for a foundation in their son's name. that foundation to help out children who are less fortunate. they are doing their very best to turn the tragedy that happened in this parking lot in to something positive. >> reporter: the shooting drew national attention. it was a chaotic scene back in october 2010 after police opened fire on a vehicle full of college students. killing 20-year-old danroy dj henry and wounding a friend who was also in the car. after years of litigation, henry's parents accepted a $6 million offer from the town of pleasantville where their son was gunned down. >> there's no amount of money that will bring our son back. if someone could tell us the amount we could pay to get our son back, we'd do that. this is the only recourse we had left. >> reporter: the 20-year-old college student was trying to

center after a brawl broke out in a bar. the star football player from nearby pace university was not involved in the fight. cops say they ordered him to stop the vehicle, but instead he aimed for officer adam hess who wound up on the hood of this nissan altima. hess explained he made the split second decision to open fire. fearing for his life. henry was black. officer hess is white. the case sparked charges of racial profiling. but no civil rights charges were ever brought. >> they felt it was a settlement within the realm of reason and they took it. to monetize the death of a child is impossible and they certainly don't view this with commensurate with the value of their son's life. >> the settlement still needs a judge's approval. there's still pending litigation from the passengers that were in dj henry's car. reporting live in thornwood, carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news.

took just 3 minutes to arrive on the scene of a raging fire that sadly took the lives of two young children and an adult. the mayor of orange says the fire department was on the scene just minutes after getting the 911 call but it was too late to save 7-year-old may, 22-year-old na'shaun may and maurice. some are questioning the firefighters' response. the cause of the fire is under investigation. new information about that deadly tug boat accident on the hudson in westchester county. the body of a third victim has been found. the boat crashed in to a barge saturday morning and sank in to the river. three men were killed in the accident. two of the bodies were recovered over the weekend. the third victim was discovered today inside the sunken vessel and will not be recovered until the boat is raised. tomorrow the third round of super tuesday primaries and it may very well be do or die in ohio for john kasich and in

no shocker, they're stumping in those states tonight. voters in those battleground states plus missouri, illinois, and north carolina heading to the polls tomorrow. if republican frontrunner donald trump takes ohio, it will be nearly impossible, say experts, to stop him from winning the gop nomination. trump and ohio governor john kasich tied in the latest poll. marco rubio is trailing far behind in the polls in his home state of florida. if he doesn't beat trump there, his future as a candidate would seem unlikely. could another upset be in the works for bernie sanders? right now he's polling behind hillary clinton in all of tuesday's primary states but he was behind in michigan last week and pulled out a surprise win. hillary clinton campaigning hard in the battleground states tonight, trying to maintain her support among ethnic minority voters. we'll have the results tomorrow on eyewitness news at 11:00 and any time on our website, abc7ny. sarah palin was on the

after getting word that her husband had been injured in a snowmobile accident in alaska. she made a surprise appearance after canceling a solo event. she told the crowd her husband is recovering in intensive care. mayor de blasio will travel to the nation's capital tomorrow in reports of planning planned cuts to the anti-terror funding. beblauz will testify before a house subcommittee. the federal government planned to pull half. new york's share would be cut by $91 million. newly released video from a shooting spree. dashcam video showing the end of the night of terror in kalamazoo, michigan last month as the uber driver, jason dalton, was arrested. investigators now say he told them that his uber app had taken over his body and made him open

six people two were wounded. new at 11:00, for the first time, an nfl official has acknowledged a link between football and brain trauma. it happened today at a congressional round table about concussions. he said research has shown a number of retired players were diagnosed with the disease, cte. so there's a link. cte is associated with brain trauma causing symptoms like dementia and depression. it can only be detected after death. rents and raid will soon be welcome by homeowners who rent out their pads through airbnb. the company will soon allow owners to submit comments on their website. new tonight, an unusual discovery outside a local home. why this cross has people concerned and police back at the scene tonight investigating.

new at 11:00, cell phone technology getting praise for a dad tracking down his missing baby. that van getting stolen with a 4-month-old baby in the back. baby's father quickly tested his own cell phone which he also left in the van.

his baby at a designated spot. the child found in his car seat on the sidewalk and safe. the thief and the van are still missing. an unusual discovery in new jersey. a large cross found in the front yard of a family's home in bergenfield. the wife is you especially -- the wife is you -- the wife is jewish and the husband is mexican. >> reporter: beatrice is jewish. her husband oscar is mexican. their upstairs tenants are haitian and italian. there's a statue of liberty out front and a menorah in the window. someone stuck a cross in their front lawn. >> it makes me feel unsafe knowing somebody came on my lawn to prove a point. why would they do that? >> reporter: tonight bergenfield police came to the house to follow up on the incident. neighbors say bergenfield is a

it does not suffer from racial problems. >> lately there's been a lot of threatening like bomb calls to schools and stuff like that. so this now is like what's going on? >> reporter: the cross was not set on fire and now sits in the family's backyard. it's not clear who the intended target was but the fact that it was left here leaves a haunting after taste. >> i teach my kids respect. that we need to leave a better world for the new generations. >> reporter: this case has not been classified a hate crime. in bergenfield, new jersey, lucy yang, channel 7 eyewitness news. new tonight, girls of some new york city public schools will soon have access to free tampons and sanitary napkins. dispensers will be put in high schools in queens. some girls were skipping class because they were embarrassed to ask for supply.

city police department giving thanks to a crucial part of its crime fighting efforts. the reception was held tonight at police headquarters to recognize the work of its community volunteers. they're volunteers who work with local precincts to find the best way for officers to bond with and serve their community. >> you are the educators. you're those that are making sure this department is on the community and working for the community. >> the nypd presented a special award to bourbon harris, the ceo of renaissance youth center. the organization works closely with officers from the 42nd precinct in the bronx. the broadway hit hamilton taking over the white house today. president obama who's seen the play here in new york twice played cue card older to the man who wrote and plays hamilton for a little free style in the rose garden.

tomorrow morning. we're at 43. i know that's chilly but it's actually up a couple over the last few hours. temperatures have started to recover. barometer is on the fall. the high today was 51. that was right after midnight. daylight hours spent in the 40s. rainfall a quarter of an inch in new york city. there are your sunrise and sunset times for your tuesday. rainfall amounts really climbing over parts of long island over an inch now. close to an inch in the jersey shore. third of an inch in central park. much lighter amounts off to the north and west. just some drizzle by dawn. there's areas of fog. looks dreary early. then 50s and brightening during the afternoon hours. milder during the midweek. we'll be around 60 degrees. cold air is coming back late weekend. earlier look at the weekend shows a decent saturday. a cold 50. maybe a coastal storm on sunday. a little close for comfort. that may mean some rain, inland snow for the first day of spring. 44 degrees in poughkeepsie. we're all huddled around the low and middle 40s.

morning with drizzle and fog. clouds by noon. at that point i don't think you need the umbrella. skies will try to brighten during the afternoon hours, sending our temperatures in to the mid, perhaps upper 50s. still steady rain over parts of connecticut and patchogue. a little downpour right there. that will shift eastward. then this looks a little threatening off to the west. look what happens on the futurecast. this falls apart. after morning drizzle clouds will try to brighten. then we'll have a window from tomorrow afternoon in to wednesday morning where it's dry. late day on wednesday is when there could be a couple showers from that system. under the system to our west. look how warm it was today. we won't be that warm but i can see temperatures flirting with 60. by morning we're looking at the showers and drizzle around but then by afternoon a couple breaks in the clouds. mid and upper 50s. wednesday morning still some clouds and fog again. 40s to around 50. sun breaks. and a pretty nice day until showers try to move in late day.
