history in havana. a major milestone in international relation. the first family arrives in cuba. >> it is fine. spring snowstorm, the calendar says it is the first day of spring but winter refuses to leave. good evening everyone. i'm joe torres.

march madness has begun but the forecast is for winter weather. a snow alert in new york city is in effect. snow plows are gassed up and ready to roll. coverage of the spraining storm. stefan kim is out on long island, on the east end they could be seeing up to 6 inches of snowfall. but we begin with meteorologist jeff smith. >> reporter: eastern parts of suffolk county on long island currently under a winter storm warning through 10:00 a.m. on monday. through parts of the jersey shore. getting a little bit of snow in and around new york city now. our own kimberly richards e- city. shore. snow. to snow.

then it goes over to snow. it parallels the eastern seaboard. 39 in the city. 36 at toms river where the precipitation is coming down more heavily. they have cooled off and as temperatures get down to freezing overnight, this can really cause robs. a wintry mix developing during the overnight hours, changing over to all snow this evening. 3 to 6 inches over eastern long island. less than an inch well north and west of the city. i think new york city roads remain mainly wet, because temperatures come down more heavily and the temperature gets down closer to freezing. the roads could be snow covered over the eastern half of long island. we'll time that out for you and talk about a major warm up as we head to the first few days of spring coming up. jeff thank you. you heard it.

an historic whirlwind trip. marcie gonzalez is in havana right now. marcie? ili joe. before all of this rain started you could feel the excitement. we saw a few waving american flags. this is a day so many people here thought they would never see. history in havana. president obama ending decades of frigid relations between the u.s. and cuba. the first family touching down in the communist country. this marks the first presidential visit to the impoverished nation in nearly night years. >> president obama is opening the window. to america. >> reporter: the president will only be here for about 48 hours, meeting with cuban president raul castro, though not with his brother, fidel. the whirlwind trip focusing on trade and business opportunities for american companies.

train the cuban employees to our standards, but i'm comfortable. >> reporter: the americans know so little about cuba. to hear it directly from a cuban, i think is an amazing experience. that is what we, i think, i hope our lasting legacy is. >> reporter: this, too, was about a legacy for president obama. during this trip giving a nationally televised speech to cubans and meeting face-to-face with political dissidents. still critics remain concerned about whether cubans will benefit from this visit and the thawing relationship between our countries. >> no policy will work while the castro re jody dean and the morning team is in place. >> reporter: many here are optimistic change could come. meanwhile if this rain ever lets up i'm expected to tour old havana. his trip will end with a bit of fun as well, he is expected to attend the baseball game between the tampa bay rays and

>> marcie, thank you so much. not everyone is celebrating the president's trip to cuba. many enclaves are divided in a debate over what it really means for the future of cuban relations. kimberly richardson. >> reporter: impressed? absolutely not. union city is home to many cuban americans. one group of activists meet here each sunday. but instead of praising the president's trip, they are protesting. >> reporter: a group of activists here on 42nd street, are marching that ties directly into a similar movement of their homeland of cuba. on this particular sunday, there is extra fire in their

>> i think president obama is knife. he cannot take the word of these people. >> reporter: lou and her counterparts feel president obama is underestimating raul castro. citing obama's move to resume relations with cuba, the president fell short, calling it a missed opportunity. >> it is a moment to say okay i will lift the embargo for you but when it is free elections, we need to step forward with democracy. >> reporter: the historic trip including the baseball game and concert, they feel it is all pom and circumstance. >> i think obama's visit is frankly a betrayal of justice, matthew says because so many have died and remain in jail in cuba fighting for democracy although american companies are

lf new jersey authorities released the names of the couple who dried in an apparent murder suicide. 36-year-old annette torres was found dead in an upstairs bedroom of the home in bergen field. morris was found in the basement. it appears morris killed torres and then shot himself in the head. the couple's 11-year-old son is in state custody. a deadly tragedy for exchange students, headed to a celebration. their bus crashed in spain. 13 exchange students from all over the world were killed. another 34 people were hurt. the bus hit a guardrail, went cartwheeling across the road, hit a divider and landed on its side. the students were on their way to a fireworks festival. we also have new information on the school bus that overturned, carrying a

you can see new york city right on the edge of the steadier know and it will remain that way into the pre dawn hours of tomorrow morning. 2:45 a.m. really heavy snow setting up over suffolk county on long island. going strong over the eastern half of long island at 7:15 a.m. here is our snowfall forecast. the most snow by far 3 to 6 inches over eastern portions of suffolk county. mainly on grassy surfaces around new york city, on to central long island. that extends over parts of the jersey shore and north and east into southwestern parts of connecticut. a coating to an inch north and west of the city. accu-weather forecast for tonight, cloudy, snow at times, accumulating 1 to 3 inches. moreover long island.

new information now on a story we mentioned a few minutes ago. the school bus that overturned carrying a basketball team to a game. a driver lost control after spilling a drink and then ran into the bus. the roll over happened yesterday along interstate 65. all 127 passengers, 21 students and six adults were taken to nearby hospitals. the school district says all were treated and released except for a coach who remains in stable condition. >> i saw a bus start to go off the road and eventually flip over. kids were jumping out of the back of the bus some coming out the side windows. >> authorities said the investigation is ongoing. no one has been ticketed or charged. the team was on the way to a
