now, new york's number one news. channel 7 eye witness news. >> this is a historic visit and it's a historic opportunity. >> president obama becomes the first u.s. president to set foot in cuba in 88 years. with big plans to foster the new relationship between the u.s. and cuba. first, an accuweather alert. spring is here but so is the snow. flakes started falling tonight and many of you will face a messy morning commute. good evening i'm joe torres. >> and i'm michelle charles worth in for sandra. light snow has been coming down for a few hours in times square. folks were bundled up enjoying the flakes >> as for road conditions in queens, things aren't so bad. it could be different in the morning as the snow continues through the night. alternate side parking is

>> there are also some school delays on long island, which we'll get the most snow. >> jeff smith is here with the update on the storm. >> the good news is so far temperatures are at or above freezing across the area. that's precluding the snow from accumulating. a little light snow here as we look towards the empire state building. we have a wintder storm warning and a winter weather advisory through the jersey shore for the same time period through 10:00 a.m. monday. we expect the snow to come to an end around daybreak in and around new york city. it takes until 10:00 a.m. to end. here's the radar, snow becoming more widespread and steadier at the same time. the steadiest band here is from ocean county through eastern monmouth county. we've had accumulation in both counties. that steadier band and that's really where the heaviest snow will set up.

park and even on long island you're getting the heaviest snow still above freezing and i expect the temperature to fall overnight and allow some of that snow to begin accumulating on the roads. snow accumulations around an inch or so in new york city around grassy areas. two or three east of the stichlt 3 to 6 inches eastern long island. west a coating to an inch or so. roads remaining mainly wet but central and eastern long island will see travel impacts for the morning rush. because the snow will have accumulate and had it still might be snowing for the morning commute. we'll detail that in your full accuweather forecast coming up. >> thank you so much jeff. the snow has been falling in new jersey tonight. this was the scene in westfield in union county. the snow there has been sticking to the trees and the grass. as we said, long island will

the tale of two seasons with the sun breaking through at times earlier it was hard to worry about one last winter blast. >> look how beautiful it is. the sun is out and it's very warm. >> reporter: at home and gardening stores, the forecast may have said winter but the attitude was spring. the bags of salt going nowhere and plants and flowers the hot ticket item. many trying their best to look beyond tonight. >> we have plenty of milk and bread. it's fine. first day of spring. wednesday is 60 degrees, no problem. >> reporter: before we get to wednesday, we still have to deal with the monday commute. >> if it continues to do like this we may have trouble in the morning. >> reporter: some say with it looking like this now it'll be a sleepless night ahead. >> i'll be watching the news all night tonight and waking up sporadically keeping an eye on how early i have to get up and start. >> reporter: again, there's no roads.

it look like in the morning? reporting live, sefan kim, channel 7 eye witness news. >> sefan, thank you. everyone can track the storm on their phones with the eye witness news accu track weather alert app. a suspect in a slashing attack in brooklyn is now in custody. police arrested 25-year-old gregory alfred in seierville, new jersey. he'll be brought back to new york city soon. alfred is suspected of cutting the throat of a 53-year-old woman in the park last week. the victim survived but she did need 13 stitches. cheers for president obama and the first family as they visited the cathedral of havana. for many cubans there's plenty of excitement surrounding this historic visit. the president touched down in havana this afternoon. the first president to visit the island nation since calvin

in indiana two deputies were shot. they entered a mo bile home and came under gunfire and both were hit. jordan bucley survived but deputy karl coones died. the suspected shooter was also dead. campaigning out west with crucial races around the corner. this week's primaries are the idaho democratic caucus, utah and arizona, which is winner take all for republicans. while she was not on the campaign trail herself former president clinton was campaigning on behalf of his wife hillary in arizona. he was joined by gabrielle giffords along with mark kelly. bernie sanders is thinking about next weekend. he was in washington state that has its caucus on saturday. on the republican side, donald trump this evening in florida took a swing at president obama

turned the plane around before land inning cuba. the focus from the other candidates is on him. ted cruz joked that people should vote for him ten times or find nine friends to vote for him to avoid trump. john kasich said no one will have enough delegates. the party chairman is clearing up what determines the winner. >> nothing magical about the number. it's 50% plus one. no one is disinfranchised. they're franchised by receiving delegates based on the outcomes of the election. that's all it is. you have to have a majority in order to be the nominee of our party. >> he also said there's a lot of misinformation floating around about the rules of the party. three people attacked with a machete. witnesses described the scene in queens and what sparked the

>> reporter: amy schumer in these pictures she posted was taking in the broadway block buster hit hamilton saturday night. she and her friends got the hottest tickets in town. they enjoyed a round of drinks. >> three double reds and one sam adams. >> reporter: at intermission they ordered a second round of drinks, $77. that's when the bar captain sarah larson was hit with the real show stopper. >> they paid with a credit card and slipped me the slip and said amy wants to make sure you get a tip. i look at it and i'm completely shocked. >> i notice her become totally still and i looked over and i'm like what's going on? she was totally shocked looking at this piece of paper. >> reporter: bar manager mike anthony has the receipt to prove it, a $1,000 tip. >> i was speechless. i thought are you sure? he's like walking away and he's like yeah, of course, of course.

it's snowing out there. looking towards the empire state building. temperatures are just above the freezing mark. the snow not accumulating on the streets and sidewalks. on grassy areas it's beginning to coat the places just outside of new york city where temperatures are a touch colder. 33 in midtown and northeast wind at 6 miles per hour. the high on the day up to 43. we're down to 32 at white plains. there are some locations down to the freezing mark. those are the places we have to watch overnight for the snow to accumulate. over long island when the precipitation and snowfall intensity ramps up overnight the temperature will continue to fall down to at or even below freezing. you're down to freezing at tom's river where you have been getting heavier snowfall bands over ocean county, new jersey. this band will extend northeast up towards long island. especially into suffolk county during the next several hours. it's lighter snow from new york city and points west.

we have several more hours to go. you see the heavier band over tom 's river down towards little egg harbor. any rain mixed in earlier has switched over to snow as the temperatures have dropped. here's the high resolution future cast for the next several hours. we can track the heavier bands of snowfall. this whole thing might peak out around 2 or 2:30 in the morning here in new york city and down the jersey shore. long island getting into the heavier bands over suffolk county. by 5 or 5:15 a.m. the back edge of snowfall moving in or getting snow over long island and over suffolk county. there can be issues eastern half of long island for the monday morning commute. maybe snows on the road and snowfalling reducing visibilities and that moves off shore by 10:30 snow has cleared the east end of the island and we begin to see sunshine in and around the city. this.

the city and mainly on grassy surfaces, probably not on the roads. wet street this is and around manhattan. 1 to 3 inches south and east of new york city. western parts of long island into southwestern connecticut. 3 to 6 inches the eastern half of long island. now north and west of the city are farther away from the storm so a coating to an inch at the most in northwest new jersey and little to none along and north of i-84. accuweather forecast snow accumulating 1 to 3 inches. close tore the 1 inch mark on grassy surfaces. at 7:00 in the morning it's cloudy and still can be lingering snowfall over connecticut and eastern long island. temperature around freezing. clouds give way to sun with chilly wind tomorrow afternoon and getting up to 49. that snowfall will melt quickly. a moon hit clear sky. we're down to 34. talk about a recovery.

>> police say the fight started over a woman that happened outside of a restaurant. eye witness news reporter marcus soshgs lis has that story. >> reporter: workers didn't want to talk but were left with the task of cleaning up the aftermath. the sidewalk on 105 street is soaked with bleach because earlier it was drenched in blood. >> i've seen all this blood and i said something happened and somebody is dead because i've never seen so much blood in my life. >> reporter: no one died but three people were injured after being attacked with a machete around 5 this morning. the victims were standing outside the restaurant and bar when she were slashed. james brown saw them. police say it was started over comments to a man about his girlfriend. they suffered injuries to the head, hand and wrists. detectives returned to the scene

car after spilling a drink on herself hitting a bus carrying the griffith high school basketball boy team. >> as we were flipping bodies were ricochetting off the bus. when the bus slowed down everyone was screaming. >> reporter: this video captured the chaos as students scrambled to escape the bus. the roof was completely crushed. >> my body was in shock. i didn't feel anything at the time until my teammates were yelling out. >> reporter: when a surgeon from north carolina stopped, there were people still trapped in the bus. >> there's frankly a moment of panic and fear. i think fairly quickly you flip into the mode of their patients that could be hurt. >> i didn't know what was going on. i was still in shock. he calmed me down mentally and physically.

taken to the hospital and an assistant coach air lifted to chicago hospital. dramatic moments on a golf course in kansas when a pilot made an emergency crash landing. a 17-year-old pilot and an 18-year-old passenger were on board the plane when the engine failed. the pilot brought the plane down safely coming to a stop near a sand trap. a neighbor was the first person on the scene. >> i saw in the window a low plane and saw the two kids trying to get out and the first kid got out and he was bleeding from his head. i said lay down, lay down, 911 is i kept telling him you're okay you didn't hurt anybody else. >> the plane's owner said the pilot who had rented the plane had plenty of experience and was certified. besides the teenagers no one else was hurt. an exciting development

the snow is having a hard time accumulating on any type of paved surface in and around the city. sidewalks. we're looking towards the empire state building. there. freezing. yes, we're getting coatings of snow on grassy surfaces around the city. where it's slightly cooler. if anything as the snow lightens the temperature may go up. we're not expecting much in the way of problems, treacherous roads or anything for tomorrow. it will be a different story on eastern and long island. 32 at white plains. it's fallen down to freezing in some locations. 36 at jfk. your temperature will actually fall maybe slightly below freezing. that will allow some of the snow

and can cause issues for the monday morning commute. you're 32 at tom's river. one of the snow bands has been sitting there for several hours. from new york city and points west the snowfall is a little bit more disorganized and lighter. the heavier snow band solidifying from ocean county all the way up through southeastern nassau on long island. this will sit over the same area for the next several hours. that's why the snowfall amounts in those locations will be greater than here in new york city. so 1:00 in the morning on the future cast. some light snow in new york city and steadier snow in long island down to parts of the jersey shore. all the computer modelling ending that around 5 or 6:00 a.m. you have snow through daybreak over suffolk county long island by 7:00 a.m. and still about 33 at islip and montauk. just barely above the freezing mark. that may help out with road conditions out there. that's after getting a few

by 3:00 p.m. temperatures in the upper 40s. this is what happens when you get snowfall in spring. typically it doesn't last long on the ground and melts away quickly. this will be no exception. snowfall forecast 1 to 3 inches cities points east. it's more like an inch in and around new york city and maybe more like 2 to 3 inches in ocean county and parts of monmouth into western parts of island. eastern suffolk county by the twin forks 3 to 6 inches of snow. it's less coating to an inch at the most. northwestern new jersey and the hudson valley. it's a warm up by the middle part of the week. high pressure anchoring itself off shore. the temperatures into the 60s by wednesday. snow accumulating 1 to 3 inches less west and north. it's freezing at 7:00 in the morning and lingering snow still falling in connecticut and
