we're going to begin with a.j. >> reporter: bill, hearts across belgium are aching tonight for the lives lost and terrorist attack. this is as close as we could get to the maelbeek metro station. it's the european union. many reflect on the devastation of today. >> about 8:00 this morning in brussels two explosions ripped through the departure hall at the airport instantly turning a calm setting into a vision of chaos. >> so many people panicked, so many people cried. >> everyone was scared so everyone ran. >> eric miller of new brunswick was on a united flight that landed in brussels just after the explosions. >> i got a call from my driver that before the announcement came over the plane that two bombs exploded in the airport. >> about an hour later more carnage when a bomb exploded inside a subway station filled

>> i can't explain. it looked like war. it's unbelievable. it's unbelievable. it's really hard. i'm a firefighter. i have almost 45 years of service. it's the first time i've seen something so terrible. >> as paramedics and the wounded moved out police and the military moved in. federal investigators quickly released a photo of the suspected airport bombers while isis claimed responsibility for yet another attack in a european capital. >> the first one was not so big of an explosion but one second later it was big. really big. >> we all stand together with our ally, belgium on this dark day. >> investigators say the bombers intended not three separate explosions but four. authorities found another bomb

police raided a home where investigators found an isis flag, chemicals and a bomb loaded with nails. >> reporter: included in those injuries, a military family and we'll be getting much more over night. live in brussels, a.j. ross, channel 7, eyewitness news. >> thank you. the nypd jumping into action moment s after the bombing over night dispatching heavily armed cops at critical transportation spots in new york city. tonight in a attempt to try to reassure new yorkers that the subways are safe the mayor and police commissioner were riding the rails. a pr gimmick maybe? tim fletcher in time's square for us. >> reporter: bill, certainly a day of greatly enhanced security measures throughout the city not only here in time square, busy with tourists and visitors but

attacks. late today mayor de blasio and police commissioner bill bratton took to the subway system to change on things today. the mayor took the r train to time's square and talked to several passengers along the way to assure them that the city is safe and that the police commissioner took the number four to grand central and the shuttle across to time's square. he wanted to check on his men force. they are a critical element of this security in the subway system. he was able to talk to riders. >> the phrase if you see something say something it means a lot and you're supposed to take it literally. if you see anything that you think is suspicious or dangerous. >> echoing the mayor's comments if you see something say something. while traveling the subway system on the subway cars the constant messaging about

opportunity to spend some time in the subway system this afternoon. people are in good spirit, happy to see the police. say hello to those cops. >> reporter: police describe the action today as quote a massive show of force and a large sign of reassurance. tim fletcher, channel 7, eyewitness news. >> tim, thank you. security has been increase d significantly at airports in our area. at jfk port authority police patrolled terminals in body armor and with dogs. despite today's attacks some experts say most international airports are safer now than ever before. they were able to carry out the attacks in belgium by targeting the weakest link. >> the terrorist took advantage of the fact that there's not security on the exterior of the airport and there's areas in aviation that are not totally secure and hardened. >> there's a bill in congress to increase security at airports.

be more training and security. president obama took a moment to acknowledge the attacks during his trip to cuba today. he said the u.s. stands with him in solidarity. >> this is another reminder that the world must unite. we must be together regardless of national alty or race or death in fighting against terrorism. >> the president also said the u.s. will provide any help needed in bringing these terrorists to justice. terrorism is impacting the presidential campaign. three states are holding votes and keep -- and caucuses right now. dave evans is here now with that part of our coverage. >> reporter: it is election day in arizona, idaho and utah. front and center, what happened in brussels and how each candidate would respond to the continued threat of terrorism.

that isis must be destroyed. >> democrats and republicans have denounced trump's call for torture but ted cruz suggested patrolling muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized. >> this is not an isolated incident a loan wolf, a war with radical islamic terrorism. isis declared jihad on europe and the united states of america. >> john kasich called it a mistake to target all muslims because of yet another terror attack in europe. >> even though it should be made clear that when people die and bleed in europe we die and bleed a little bit right here in the united states of america. >> reporter: many have said another terrorist attacks between now and this november would only help donald trump but others argued his terrorism policies are too aggressive and

now in police custody after another gun was seized from a school. stephen kim is live with the latest. stephen. >> reporter: well, another gun has been found inside a city school and this time it was a 14-year-old boy found with a milimitt er-- 9 millimeter handgun. that boy had an unloaded handgun and two loaded magazines with nine bullets. he claims he was fighting with other students. he had a conflict with a student from another school. the department of education said in a statement, this is profoundly disturbing and we are working in close friendship with the nypd to investigate. there's zero tolerance of any kind. it goes onto say that families will be notified and that they're providing additional support to the school community. all students and staff are safe and there were no injuries. that 14-year-old boy will likely be charged as a juvenile. he was taken to the 71st precinct just across the street from the school here. just last week in separate incidents two students

gun to school. that's two separate incidents. back here at ms-61 this was a 14-year-old boy found with a 9 millimeter handgun. that handgun was unloaded but he had two loaded magazines with nine bullets in it and no one was injured. reporting live here in crown heights, stephen kim, channel 7, eyewitness news. >> thank you. allegations tonight that a local police chief urged his troops to ration ly rational -- to rationally profile residents. if it's through it's disturbing. here's toni yates. >> this to the aclu written by benjamin fox and sent to the 23 officers on the force. it says in port, profiling, racial or other wise has place in law enforcement used correctly and applied fairly. it says, quote, don't ask the police to ignore what we know. black gang members commit burglaries and that's why we check out suspicious black people in white neighborhoods. >> it says too, white kids buy heroin in black nyc neighbors that's why the nypd stops those white kids.

copy to the attorney general's office. >> it's outrageous and if he sent the e-mail it's clear that he needs to be fired. >> the attorney general's office responded immediately saying we have received the complaint from the aclu and a copy of the e-mail at issue. on its face the e-mail appears to be a clear violation of the attorney general's policy. we are conducting a full investigation and will take all appropriate measures. the police chief's association said, it is aware of the memo allegedly offered by chief benjamin fox. we will wait for the results of a full and fair investigation before offering any other further public comment. we reached out to the police and told chief fox is not available for comment at this time. >> someone who takes that position shouldn't be serving as a law enforcement executive and serving anywhere in law enforcement.

some say it's bold, others say it's controversial. today the new york city council approving mayor de blasio's affordable housing plan. at least a dozen protesters were removed from city hall after they try today disrupt the vote and demand the council reflect the plan. the plan calls for preserving or building 200,000

50s because we have those breezes. still some gusts near 20 miles per hour and the pressure is on the fall. we get back above average after three straight days below normal. sunset tonight less than an hour away at 7:00 and 11:00. you look at holis at 49 with the wind coming off jamaica bay but 55 in tribeca. the winds more southwest in bridgeport. that's why it's cooler. you can see it right there with our wind streamline. south, southwest winds help us warm up over the next couple of days. the humidity is lower. it will be higher tomorrow. it will reduce the risk for fire danger and feel milder tomorrow. so as we go through the evening hours with high clouds to the north the gusts back off but it's still a touch breezy over night. clouds and maybe a shower

north of new york city. near 60 by noon. notice some clouds across the hudson valley right now and a decent ban of clouds across pennsylvania. we will be clouding up over night. over all this high pressure is going to take a bermuda high position. that milder air is going to run into some resistance. there's a cold front over i-90 in new york state. it's snowing across parts of ontario and temperatures here are in the 40s and 30s. there's a chance on thursday that some of this air may sneak in from the north and east the cool us off for one day before we go back into the 60s on friday. notice the future cast here. may be a shower at 11:00 over the catskills. a lot of cloudiness tomorrow morning but that keeps it milder. there may be a stray shower north and east. the clouds will thin out over new york city. even if we have limited sunshine we will be

only 50s at the coast, 60s off to the south and west. clouds mixing with sun. it's mostly cloudy over night. a shower or two late mainly north of new york city, 46. tomorrow a high of 67, more clouds and sun. more clouds north. it's breezy and milder, not as gusty as today. partly to mostly cloudy tomorrow night at 50 degrees. you look at that high on thursday. here's the difference, with that front backing in from the north and east i think we'll have temperatures stuck in the 50s across the coast with some low clouds. then the mid and upper 60s north and west, 65 new york and the low 60s in the hudson valley. early rain on friday. that's our best chance for rain the rest of the work week. comes out this weekend, 63. the mid 50s on sunday. i can see

political lines replaced by foul line. it has not happened in a long time. president obama was there as part of his goodwill trip to cuba. also at the stadium derek jetter, rachel robinson, john kerry, the wave. first time a big league team played in cuba since 1999. james loney had himself a day. drives in a the president's react. he went deep for the rays later and hit a two-run homerun. rays won the game 4-1 the final score. the teams exchanged jerseys at the end. the whole experience getting a thumb's up from the players today. in florida at the nfl owners meetings the chop block has been out locked effective immediately and extra point kicks snap from the 15 yard line are permanent. we heard from woody johnson this week telling ryan fitzpatrick to stay with the jets. 11 years in the league fitzpatrick had his best year with the jets but not come to term with a contract.

if not we have plans in place going forward that would be fine with it. >> rutgers has a new men's basketball coach. steve pikel comes over from stony brook where he won 7 championships in his last 8 seasons. >> i've never let an athletic drekirector down, student body president down. in tampa just a few minutes from now the yankees host the mets. the mets pitchers part of the sports illustrated baseball issue. they are part of the cover. they are asking the met question, could the best be yet to come. we'll let that one ravel around your head for a while. the mets held their annual search for a national anthem singer at the ball park today. 150 hopefuls showed up and performed for the judges.
