now, new york's number one news, channel 7 eye witness news. >> he escaped nazi germany during world war ii. tonight missing in manhattan and his family is desperate to track him down. first, an elderly woman smashed in the face by a stranger at her front door. she talks about the terrifying incident to eye witness news. good evening i'm joe torres. >> i'm lauren glassburg in for sandra. the suspects is linked to four other violent robberies throughout brooklyn and queens and almost all the victims are elderly women.

they're looking for. >> sefan kim has the story. >> joe and lauren, this 84-year-old victim says she barely remembers what happened. this massive man hit her so hard he broke her nose. she's never felt unsafe in her own home until now. >> i don't know if he hit me with something. actually, i think there was something in his hands and it was larger than his hand and i just got it right here. >> what does it feel like now? >> awful. >> she heard a knock at her door and she answered it and this man was standing there. the object he smashed her face with was a handgun breaking her nose. he never even spoke a word. the impact did this to her face, which is now badly bruised. when she got up off the floor, he was gone. this is surveillance video taken from inside the building.

face. cops say he preys on vulnerable victims, elderly women. >> he needs somebody to just grab him and put him somewhere where he can't get out, like jail. >> reporter: this is surveillance video police released after he preyed on a 96-year-old woman in park slope. he got into her home before choking her at gunpoint. last weekend an 81-year-old her. in february he pistol whipped a 71-year-old woman. >> i just think it's really sad and i can't imagine somebody hitting a nice old woman who is 84. i just can't, i just don't know what kind of freak that is. >> reporter: cops say this suspect is about 5-foot

and about 250 pounds. she buzzed him in not knowing who he was. she took the elevator and he followed her up the stairs. >> it makes me pretty nervous. i look around corners and things like that. >> reporter: now in each incident the suspect takes off on foot with several hundred dollars of cash. in this incident he got away with nothing. reporting live in kensington, sefan kim. new at 11, the search for an elderly man missing tonight in manhattan. fred's family says he walked out of his home on friday and hasn't been seen yet. he escaped nazi germany and fled to israel and now his family needs help finding him. jim dolan is on the upper west side with this story tonight. >> reporter: a fascinating life and he's had a fascinating life and for much of his adult life

city well and know it is subway system well but he's 89 years old now. he was acting erratically a couple days ago and walked out of his home and hasn't been seen yet since the police and his family now frantically searching for him. it's cold in the city tonight and it'll be colder still tomorrow and 89-year-old fred's family is sure he's not ready for this weather. >> he was wearing a fairly light coat. i saw his scarves upstairs was underdressed for the weather. we're concern and had each hour is important. >> reporter: he had not shown signs of dementia or failing health before thursday but workers say he seemed agitate and had road the elevators for a while and friday around 1:00 walked out into the night.

protesters descended on the memorial site in brussels chanting against isis. police used riot gear and water canons and sound grenades to deal with the crowd. meanwhile, more raids were carried out across belgium. nine people were detain in deed 13 raids and five were released. in italy police arrested a man accused of supplying them with fake documents. a faction of the taliban is claiming responsible for a deadly attack in pakistan. 65 people were killed in today's bombing inside a crowded park. more than 300 people were injured in that blast. the taliban group says it was targeting christians celebrating easter. many of the victims were women and children. closer to home, two people are hurt after a truck plunged

over the guardrail. it happened before 8 on the western spur of the turnpike in newark. it landed on raymond boulevard. two pedestrians helped rescue the men in the truck. politics now. donald trump took time out from his twitter war from ted cruz to share an assessment about u.s. security. >> i don't think america is a safe place for americans. we're going to have problems just as big or bigger. >> he claims he's the only presidential candidate capable of keeping america safe. meanwhile cruz double downed his charge that trump engaged in a tabloid smear. trump says he had nothing to do with it. in central park, an ominous symbol of disfaction planted not far from trump tower.

a second man joins in the fight. the first man grabbed a knife and stabbed two people. one of them was critically hurt. so far no arrests. new video of a violent confrontation in a night shrub in chelsea. the rap posted the video online ahead of a court appearance tomorrow. he was thrown out of the up and down club during a scuffle. he tried to punch the woman in the face. along with the video he posted a statement saying i don't understand why it took three men to grab me and remove me from the club. easter egg hunts can get a little competitive in the nicest of ways. one turned into a shoving match. it happened in orange, connecticut, yesterday and led to broken baskets and tears with adults to blame.

but an easter egg hunt turned rotten. pez set up the free hunt and from the pictures you can see a drove of crowd. it was supposed to go in three stages based on age groups with the youngest children first. adults didn't abide by the rules. >> when it came time for 10:30 the parents rushed the area. >> we were talking to folks this was supposed to start at a directed time we posted. let's wait and give a whistle and the signal to start this. that lasted about a minute and then folks just rushed the field and took everything. >> when my son left he had a broken basket and was crying. >> reporter: the pez general manager and his staff couldn't gain the upper >> it was like locust. everybody descended and left. >> reporter: the company offered free stuff to disappointed children but with long lines the mood had already soured.

so it was a pretty nice easter day. got to wear your bonnet and didn't have to shield yourself from the rain. not you, necessary. people. the rain is coming. . >> yes. a couple of sprinkles moving in to new jersey right now. the heavier rain waits until 3:00 in the morning to move on in. the empire state building is still eastery. very pretty lights on the building. temperature at 45. the wind from the southeast at 7. the high on the day got up to 55 before the sea breeze kicked in. temperatures overachieved during the day. we get a little bit more sunshine than we were expecting. i haven't heard complaints about yet. the normal high is 54.

we got all the way up to a summery 83 degrees. 45 in newark. 45 at laguardia. lower 40s on the island from islip towards montauk. a couple of sprinkles showing the radar over essex county and morris county. basically between i-80 and i-78. we look to the south and there's a whole bunch of moisture over virginia moving to the northeast. there's more thunderstorms and showers up to the ohio valley moving directly off to the east. we're going to be between these two systems. we won't get the brunt of either one. we'll get rainfall nonetheless. probably maybe between a quarter and a third of an inch of rain. not a heavy rainfall but making for a slower than normal commute tomorrow. high resolution future cast showing the initial band of sprinkles and then the rain

especially from new york to points south and east. by that point there could be a heavier downpour or two over long island. by the time the sun comes up you won't see it come up because it'll be overcast and foggy and rain and drizzle through noontime. after the back edge of the rain moves through by noontime it's by the delwor water gap. we start clearing things out in the afternoon and the temperature will recover by later tomorrow and get sunshine. accuweather forecast overnight, it's overcast and occasional rain and drizzle late. we're down to 42. rain and drizzle fog in some areas at 7:00 in the morning for your commute. temperature around 44. it's kind of rainy and drizly right through midday and then it starts brightening up in the latter half of the afternoon becoming windy as well. the high up to 60.

here's a look at tonight's top stories. police released new video of a suspect wanted in robberies in brooklyn and queens and the latest incident. he followed an 84-year-old woman in her apartment building and hit her in the face with a gun. a family in manhattan wants help finding a man missing for two days now. the 89-year-old man walked out of his home friday and hasn't been seen since. in brussels a tense situation between police and right wing protesters. the demonstrators descended on the memorial chanting against isis. police used water canons to control the crowd. police carried out 13 more sxradz arrested four men. top thing news this half hour, a korean war veteran has died after a fire ripped through his hope home in queens. >> the fire started in his home and two firefighters were also hurt. >> sefan kim has the story. >> he's always lived like that. >> reporter: for a decade neighbors say these cars have sat here like this. fire officials say the clutter out front and inside this two story homemade it difficult for them to battle the blaze and reach the victim.

died inside before help could reach him. the fire broke out around 4:30 this morning and it was an all hands on deck response requiring 60 firefighters to get it under control and took them about a half hour to do so. because of trouble accessing the building from the front, firefighters had to enter from the back. residents said he lived alone and would rarely see him outside. >> you would see the lights on and i'm assuming someone lives there. two cars are here and their license plates are registered but never saw anyone. my mom said his wife passed away a few years ago. >> reporter: he loved animals and he was a korean war veteran. >> he was nice. he greeted us and say hello and all that stuff. that's it. he'd sit there with his wife and that's really it. >> reporter: officials say the fire started on the first floor of the building and the cause is

the identity of the victim hasn't been released. sefan kim, channel 7 eye witness news. new video of an armed robbery in bridgeport, connecticut. the video shows three suspects entering the king discount liquors on thursday night. two of the men jumped over the counter, opened doors and took cash and the third man served as a lookout. police say they made off with a thousand dollar this is cash. with opening day for the yan keys and the mets new york city prepares to ban smokeless tobacco. the mayor will sign the ban on arenas and stadiums in the next two weeks. the early focus will be on education and warnings but the mayor says officials won't hesitate to hand out fines to major league baseball players who ignore the ban. paperless prescriptions are now the law of the land across new york state as of today. doctors, dentists and health

electronically send prescriptions directly to pharmacies instead of giving paper scripts to patients. it's meant to fight prescription drug abuse and to reduce errors made by hard to read handwriting by doctors. robert deniro pulled a screening of a controversy screening from the tribeca film festival. initially he said it would screen. the documentary is about arguing against vaccinating children. the film was co-directed by andrew wakefield. he was stripped of his medical license after linking autism to childhood vaccine. deniro is the co-founder of the film festival and has a child with autism. the deadly bombing triggered a facebook safety. facebook sent the safety check

two people have been arrested in brit tan after a young girl died while using a bouncy castle. the 7-year-old was inside the castle when it was swept away by a strong gust of wind. a showman's build of great britain said it was displaced by a sudden gust. the spokesperson said if winds were consistently high the inflatables would have been closed. >> everyone in the fairground industry is shattered by this. it's so appalling this girl lost her life. we can't comprehend how it happen and had how they must feel. >> a man and a woman have been arrested on suspicious of manslaughter. a wild house party comes to an abrupt end as a roof collapses. the incident was caught on

eight people were dancing on the roof when it collapsed right under them. three people were hurt but they are expected to survive. the accident is now under investigation. a college basketball coach is out of a job tonight after she suspended two gay players from her team. dawn brown is no longer head coach at prairie view a&m university. she suspended the players because they were dating each other. the university says it violated title xi. she had a policy in place that bans them from having nonprofessional relationships with one another. the city of san francisco banning government travel to north carolina after legislature this is that state passed a law discriminating against the lgbt community. san francisco mayor imposed the ban to make sure they don't

i don't think steady rain gets in here until 3:00. temperatures remaining steady at 44 right through sunrise. right now 43 in morris town. 45 down the shore at tom's river. 41 on montauk. 45 at monticello and a couple of very, very light sprinkles showing up on the radars right now over northern new jersey and one moving across manhattan and queens. i wouldn't be shocked to see a rain drop or two. the steadier batch of rain waits until after 3 or 4:00 in the morning to come in. by 4:15 it could be heavier downpours showing up and steadier rain over long island. it goes over the area by the sunrise moves in and heavier rain by pennsylvania. it's occasional rain and drizzle. by 1:15 p.m. you see the back edge of the rain moving through central new jersey.

takes place quickly. already some sunshine developing over western new jersey by that point. we fast forward way ahead. about a week from now with this arctic air, which is going to make an early april arrival because april begins on friday and this arctic air will be up here over northwestern canada. it dives off to the south and the leading edge gets in here during the day on sunday. monday big opening day at yankee stadium and that arctic air could be over us and it could be a day where highs are in the 40s and it feels like it's in the 30s. we'll be watching it carefully. things can change between now and then. here's the accuweather forecast. rain and drizzle and give yourself a little extra time if you're driving in the city. fog in some areas as well. about 44 and it's occasional rain and drizzle through midday and then windy and turning brighter late in the afternoon.

the 12-year-old girl blessed on the tar mac. she's been battling a mystery illness but since meeting the pope her life has changed. jim dolan has her story. >> the pope was truly like the happen today me. >> reporter: for julia and her parents, every day is a gift that they think is delivered by the pope himself. >> since the pope's visit it's been a blessing. >> reporter: julia was a normal preteen girl before she started getting sick last year. >> i was scared for my life. doctors would just shrug their shoulders. >> reporter: soon she couldn't walk and no one could figure out what was wrong. >> it was scary. i laid at sleep in night and my whole life was over. the doctors came in and they didn't know. they were giving me no hope at all. the doctors didn't even know.

>> reporter: during his viet in september pope frances picked her out of a crowd and blessed her in her wheelchair. her story got nationwide attention. >> soon there was a tremendous outpour of love in the community. people reached out to us from all over. her best friend's mom start add go fund me page and had a doctor reach out to us and offer us treatment. >> reporter: julia started getting the medical attention and medicine she needed. >> a couple months ago in december i got some feeling on the bottom of my feet and the sides of my feet and now i can feel it almost fully and the night before my dad's birthday this past wednesday the top of my feet and my ankles started buzzing. that means it's coming back. >> reporter: it's coming back. julia is determined she will walk again. her parents believe she will walk again. the pope didn't cure her.
