being treated here and fair condition at this hour. shot in the face at 3:00 this morning. the man who owns that car says it appears he was shot through the window. investigators are working to determine what happened in the moments before a taxi driver was shot in the face while on the job. the driver's twin brother identifies him as 43-year-old ellydo collins a married father of four from haiti who lives in east orange. and ely is still processing what happened. >> it is a big city. and where a lot of people, a lot of people carry guns. we are told to repeatedly be careful. >> reporter: the taxi company had a call for a pickup at davis place in east orange. collins arrived at the location and sometime after that shot in the face. after that, he was able to drive himself to east orange police headquarters on south munn street. >> he has been our driver for years.

couple of years now. >> this woman is a driver for the company but did not handle the call. the map handled by the company outlines the route to the precinct and it is quick thinking. >> and it is a miracle. drive yourself to the precinct. a very smart thinking. >> that is certainly true. and unclear who fired the shot. no arrests have been made. live in newark, mallory hough, channel 7 eyewitness news. a man convicted of shooting and wounding a suffolk county police officer will spend decades behind bars. 23-year-old sheldon luftenant was sentences to 55 years in prison, convicted of shooting officer mark collins and collins spoke a few minutes ago and says he will not let the shooting stop him from living his dream. >> i always dreamed of being a mission officer and i felt i wasn't -- a police officer and i welt i wasn't going to let someone take that away from me. i wanted to get back to work as soon as i could and that's what

>> he tried to handcuff him following a chase after a traffic stop. an 89-year-old man has been found safe missing for days. fred sharpstein wound up at saint luke's hospital. hospital staff saw our report last night, and he is said to be in good condition. we will turn now to the weather and a soaking morning. giving way to a rather windy afternoon. >> let's check in with meteorologist bill evans, in the weather center, with the exclusive accu-weather forecast. bill? >> well, let's take a look from our camera here, in brooklyn. and you will see, across from brooklyn, over to the east side, this is overall gloomy with low clouds and our temperature here at the noontime, it has been running right around 45 degrees. haven't really warmed up a whole lot. so what we are going to see is the temperatures warming and the sun coming out. can you believe that? some of these visibilities have been low. like at white plains airport. 2 1/2 mile visibility. and area airports, that kind of slowed things down. you see a mile and a half

at noon and newark is 45 minutes. and jfk, a little bit of a delay. down to philly. this afternoon, can you believe it or not, it will clear up but the wind will come with it. as a moment ago. wind advisory in effect until 6:00 tomorrow evening, that's because a low that is coming up, into canada, it will bring a front through, and that will pick up the winds. the last of the rain is really coming across connecticut, new haven, counties, nassau, and pushing east. in about an hour, the wind will start to pick up, and the sun will start coming out to the west, and the low that we are talking about here, in the eastern great lakes, it cuts into canada. that makes it very windy this evening. and tomorrow. and rather chilly, too. and we will talk about that, as march goes out like a lion. i guess that old saying is true. we will talk about that and the rest of the week's weather in just a moment. the accu-weather seven-day forecast. david, back to you. >> thank you, bill. an interview you saw first on channel 7. a woman attacked and robbed speaking to eyewitness news about the man wanted in several similar attacks. now the attacks all preying on

eyewitness news is live in the kensington section with the story. >> reporter: 84-year-old aaron vanscandal says she has never been attacked before. she said she never had a reason to feel unsafe or look over her shoulder, especially in her own home. that all changed this weekend. when she was brutally attacked by a man police are now tying to five similar incidents, take a look at what that man did to her face. he smashed her nose. and broke it with a handgun. that is part of his m. o. in each case, he picks elderly women, he follows them home, and he has a gun, and he is violent. he has choked a 91-year-old. he has pistol-whipped a 71-year- old. take a good look oat his face. he is hard to miss. he is a large man. at 250 pounds. about 5'10". police believe he is about 40 to 60 years old. and ventendle says she let him into the building, as she was coming home, not realizing what he was about to do.

i'm looking around corners, and things like that. yes, i am much more aware. i didn't have any reason before. but now, that i see that there are people out there. >> reporter: now, also alarming for residents, he seems to be picking neighborhoods where residents feel generally safe, park slope and prospect heights and the latest attack in kensington and each incident he takes off on foot with several hundred dollars in cash. in this latest attack, he got away empty-handed. she believes it was her two dogs that scared him away. it was her two chihuahuas. reporting live in kensington, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. new york city officials are meeting later today to discuss counter-terrorism. mayor deblasio will sit down with the police commissioner bratton this afternoon to discuss the nypd's terrorism preparedness. in the wake of the attacks overseas. meanwhile, some developing news out of brussels today. in the wake of the deadly

the only person, the man only identified as faycal-c, has been released, by a judge, have any evidence. the death toll from the bombing has risen to 35. that includes four americans. overnight, police released new video, hoping to track down the brussels airport who is still on the run today. this is just hours after another terrorist attack. thousands of miles away. targeting christians on easter sunday. abc's elizabeth hur has the latest. >> reporter: authorities say unfortunately terrorists have struck again. this time in pakistan. this, as new video is released, hoping to track down a suspect, from the attacks in brussels. with a massive man hunt intensifying, for a brussels terror suspect, seen in this new video, from just moments before the airport explosion, abc news learning another terror suspect faycal shafu is

there was insufficient evidence for his rest. he was trying to recruit refugees for jihad and this time among the seven men arrested and charged for being connected to a terrorist group. as police continue to hunt for terror suspects across europe. more unrest in belgium. right wing protesters, clashing with police. at the scene of the brussels memorial. expressing anger against belgium muslims on easter sunday. >> everyone that is not belgian, because this is belgium, if you don't want to live like us, go. you don't have to stay. >> reporter: meanwhile, in a new isis-inspired attack in pakistan, more than 70 people were killed and at least 300 others injured, most of the victims women and children. >> everybody was crying. there were dead bodies. >> reporter: it happened in a public park, also on easter. a taliban group that has supported isis in the past, taking responsibility, claiming they deliberately targeted christians.

into a global religious media empire and her show seen by 260 million people around the world. known simply as mother angelica, she was in declining health for years. she died on easter sunday, at the age of 92, inside the rural alabama mon monastery where she lived. all public schools in the state will immediately have their drinking water tested for lead contamination. state senators will propose a bill later today. they say the legislation would allocate $3 million to the water test. and the move comes after elevated lead levels were detected in the water at 30 schools in newark. the u.s. supreme court has rejected former illinois governor rob blagojevich's appeal. he is serving a 14-year sentence for corruption. he was convicted of among other things trying to sell president obama's vacated senate seat. and the federal appeals court threw out five of 18 other

blagojevich's lawyers argue that he was offering legal political favors. later tonight, workers and political advocates will rally at the new york state capital to raise the minimum wage. the group holding a 24-hour vigil in support of governor cuomo's proposal to raise the minimum wage to $15. the governor wants the proposal included in the state budget. which lawmakers hope to finish negotiations on this week. the proposal would gradually raise the minimum wage in new york city by 2018 and everywhere else in the state by 2021. meanwhile, california is making a similar move. legislation there could raise the minimum wage to $15 over a six-year period. small businesses would have an extra year to prepare. supreme court nominee merrick garland will have his first courtesy meeting with a republican senator. the federal judge will sit down with mark kirk of illinois. he was the first g.o.p. member of the senate to call for the chamber to vote on garland's nomination, saying republicans need to, quote, man up.

the wind is starting to wind down now. that is the first phase of. it the temperature kind of a chilly raw 45 degrees and an east to a northeast wind. and the humidity is high and the pressure is falling so the atmosphere is very unstable. so far, .36 of an inch of rain in the park and we might squeeze out one more temperature out of that. and my friendly goldberg will be here will be here first at 4:00 and have that for you. and the sun sets at 7:17. a pretty sunset coming. the rain moves out. the wind picks up. it blows out the clouds and fog. 50 mile-an-hour wind in spots today through tomorrow. and the coastal section, the inland winds, a little bit less. but still 35, 50 mile-an-hour winds. there is a wind advisory in effect. more tranquil weather on wednesday. and then warm and wet, to end march. and 46 now in north port. and massapequa. 49 around islip. 44 bridgeport. and 57 in toms river where the sun has started to break out and with the northeasterly

really chilly fetch in here, across long island sound, and long island, and down the jersey shore. and the wind gusts, 23 at laguardia, and 20 around the park, and 12 to 25 mile-an-hour wind gusts to the east. wind advisory to 6:00 tomorrow. and we are looking at the showers, ending here, and along i-95, along the southern state, and the l.i.e., the northern state, and back to the west, sun starting to brake out. our low back here, it will continue to push in, that wind, and with the wind, comes a northwest wind, and even though the temperatures tomorrow are getting out of the 50s, the wind makes it feel cooler. rainfall amounts, 0.3 around new jersey and 0.4 around new york. and it might be a three quarters of an inch around islip. here is the future cast in the afternoon. the sun breaking out quickly and the last of the rain pushing east ward. 58 to 60 by 6:00. beautiful sunset. and i just wanted to show off here, filming some snow, from albany, north ward to platsburg

tomorrow afternoon, we will get into the low 50s. but we will have that wind kind of cranking out of the northwest here, so that will make it feel much cooler and we start off the day, wednesday, in the 30s. so winds, we have been talking about, get going, heavily here, and now the red areas are about a 40 to 50 mile-an-hour wind that is showing up. and so much of our day is going to be quite windy. the winds will start calming down tomorrow night. so rain is moving out. and then increasingly windy. with clearing skies. and 60 is the temperature. and partly cloudy and windy tonight. and it gets chilly, particularly with a northwest wind coming in. and tomorrow, it is a blustery and chilly day, despite plenty of sunshine. some 50 mile-an-hour wind gusts tomorrow. and we will be at 52. the accu-weather seven-day forecast. we got some rain late thursday. and i believe that is the last day of the month. we say bye-bye to march. which goes out like a lion and april 1 on friday. and we got a shower, and then 67 degrees. and then we've got some cold arctic air. that comes down sunday and monday. >> what's up with that? >> that is no april fooling. >> that is not fun. >> you know, easter is early

well, now some of the stories that were caught on camera and caught our attention. we begin with what could have been a seen out of one of the fast and furious movies. a group of thieves stole eight vehicles from a car dealership in tampa florida all at once. first, two suspects broke into the office and found a box with keys with the cars in the lot and were off and joined other men outside and matched the keys to the cars and one by one they drove off with eight of them. it took minutes. police have recovered a few of the vehicles but still looking for all of the culprits behind this. a scary moment at a wild college party was caught on camera in maryland. police say eight people were dancing on the roof of this home, when it collapsed under them. three people were hurt. but are expected to survive their injuries. at least 200 people were at the party when that roof collapsed. and baseball fans and players buzzing for a bad reason in arizona.

chicago's cub jason hayward found himself by a bee swarm during spring training and then he started swatting and the insects moved to the stand. and i think they were cubs fans because they realized they were losing and mariners won 12-0. nowhere to hide from the bees. >> nowhere to hide. >> and you don't want to swat them because you don't want to get stung. >> that is a good thing you know that. >> thanks. >> thanks. >> it is also sunny there. >> that is a good thought. >> and warm. >> bees like that. >> exactly. >> it is cold here. all right. we are moving on. the makers of a popular deodorant old spice on the defense after the product apparently left some painful marks on more than a few folks. a class action lawsuit claims that old spice is giving some customers rashes and burns on their armpits. a spokesperson for procter & gamble which makes the product says old spice is safe to use and the reactions can be caused by a number of factors. well, a deal is in the

weekend, a man dressed as spiderman was accused of tangling with a tourist who he says stiffed him with a tip. rob nelson has more in times square. rob? >> reporter: good afternoon, there is aggressiveness by the costume characters in times square and the council will take action and the leaders who support the new legislation decided to share antidotes with those who experienced the harassment firsthand. >> the press conference is part of a public push to create new rules for city plazas that the city council will consider in the coming days. under the rules, the city's transportation department will take control of all city plazas including times square. more importantly, it would create specific areas within the plazas where commercial activity would be allowed. which would give pedestrians the option of avoiding that scene, if they so choose. meaning if you don't want to see spiderman or those now

all of this is a response to growing complaints about overly aggressive commercial behavior in the plazas, and today, officials shared some pretty disturbing anecdotes from visitors and others in times square. >> tweets totally unsolicited from 2016, someone said i just got attacked by elmo in times square. those costume characters in times square are scam artists. when el know grabs your [ bleep ] in times square, your childhood is immediately ruined. real tweets from people, facebook posts, a real issue. >> and now, a public hearing on this new measure has been set. and just a few days from now on the 30th of the month. and supporters of the bill trying to get this in place on the books before the start of summer. we will have more coming up at 5:00. for now, reporting live at times square, rob nelson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, rob. police are now offering a

shot and killed a teenager in east harlem. 16-year-old juan tavares was not in the head outside the hospitals in harlem and he died at the hospital. the shooting happened across the street from a middle school. police say the incident started as an argument between two groups at the housing complex. no arrests were made. police are offering a $2500 reward in the case. >> and the race for the white house, bernie sanders is back on the campaign trail, after significant wins against hillary clinton over the weekend. and on the republican side, donald trump and ted cruz continue to go after each other over a tabloid report. abc's lauren lister is in washington this afternoon with the latest. lauren? >> reporter: several caucuses feeling the burn. and sandsers feeling he can win the nomination despite a difficult delegate map and no races on the republican side but plenty of drama on the "national enquirer" story on rumors ted cruz had marital infidelities. >> bernie sanders trouncing hillary clinton in washington state, alaska, and hawaii. earning at least 70% of the

>> i think it is hard for anybody to deny that our campaign has the momentum. >> no official comment from clinton. but her aides hinted sanders would win the caulk, maintaining the results don't change the race going forward. sanders would need to win 73% of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination, the candidate insisting he can still win. >> i will not deny for one second that we still remain the underdogs but we have come a long, long way, we do have a path toward victory. >> on the republican side, donald trump continuing to deny any involvement with the "national enquirer" story targeting ted cruz. cruz accused trump of being behind it. >> i had nothing to do with. it the campaign had absolutely nothing to do with it. >> reporter: trump claims he is the victim of personal attacks by cruz. after an anti-trump super pac released this ad last week. featuring a racy gq magazine photo of his wife. >> there is no way in a million

without his absolute knowledge. >> cruz insists he had no part in it. it is the campaign spat that is intensely vitriolic and personal. >> nobody benefits from this. the only person that possibility might benefit a little bit is john kasich, the governor of ohio who is still running but way hine. >> and now, trump is threatening to sue. accusing ted cruz of trying to steal delegate, trump earned at the polls. the cruz campaign saying they are earning the support of those delegates. in washington, lauren lister, channel 7 eyewitness news. david? >> thank you, lauren. >> new at noon, a federal lawsuit has been filed challenging a new north carolina law that blocks local governments from passing anti- discrimination rules. republican lawmakers wanted to stop an impending charlotte ordinance allowing transgender people to use the rest rooms aligned with their gender identity. the new law prevents cities and counties from extending protections covering sexual orientation and gender identity at restaurants, hotels and stores. and meanwhile, georgia's

a gay rights bill passed by the state's legislature. nathan deal says he could not find any instances of people being forced to do something against their religious beliefs. among other protections, the bill would shield clergy who refuse to perform same-sex marriages and religious organizations from having to hire or serve gay people. >> we want to go back and talk to bill evans about the weather. it is a gloomy weather. but the good thing i don't see any umbrellas around the station anymore. the streets are still wet. but the umbrellas are put away. kind of a gloomy look. but the wind will pick up and blow the clouds out of here in the last hour or so. and the last of the rain is in the eastern sections of westchester county, and fairfield and new haven county in connecticut and long island. and in pennsylvania, this will slide eastward here. here, another 30 minutes of this, and that is gone, too, out to the east. there is drier air that starts sweeping in from the west. and southwest. and we are looking at these

an airline pilot is facing charges after failing a breathalyzer test when he was scheduled to fly. tsa agents in detroit said that on saturday morning, the co- pilot was acting strangely, at a security checkpoint. and they smelled alcohol on his breath. after he failed the breathalyzer, the flight to philadelphia was canceled. passengers watched as he was taken off the plane, by police, and later arrested.

the pilot around the side of the car, and handcuffing him. >> we were all told to get off the plane, and then they told us that our flight was canceled. >> getting a little nervous, and i guess there was a good reason why. >> american airlines says that this is a serious matter and the company is assisting with the investigation. the new national museum of african-american history and culture has not opened yet. but one of its exhibits already causing a controversy. comedian bill cosby is going to be recognized in the taking the stage exhibition. and the new york times reports there will be no mention of the many sexual assault accusations against cosby. curators say they feel his achievement should stand alone. the museum is set to open in december in washington, d.c. cosby has denied the accusations. a story that will have you shaking your head. what was supposed to be a family fun easter egg hunt turned into a violent seen in connecticut. hundreds of people came out to the event hosted by the candy company pez and supposed to
