>> during routine administrator screening, the individual drew what appeared to be a weapon and pointed at officers. an officer fired and shot the suspect who was treated by medical personnel. the suspect was taken in to custody and transported to the hospital for treatment. the suspect is currently undergoing surgery. his condition is unknown at this time. >> police now confirming that man, the one in custody who was shot and wounded by capitol police is the same man who interrupted a house session last year, claiming to be a, quote, prophet of god. dauphin never showed up for a court hearing on that case and was ordered to stay away from the capitol. apparently he didn't, and came back today armed. his handgun has been recovered. his car search and found to not contain any threats. we'll keep an eye on all this and have more for you tonight at 6:00. >> police saying the capitol

call it a monday weather mix. first the rain then the sun. now comes the high winds. >> meteorologist lee goldberg outside now with details on the wind warning now in effect. >> still wind advisory, wind gusts are going to top 50 miles per hour. we're leaving the sweet spot of the day where we left the rain. we got some sun out, winds weren't gusting too much and now obviously can hear the wind. i'll look at the george washington bridge on the fort lee side. you have to be aware of the cross winds and the area bridges. i imagine there will be speed restrictions tomorrow because of the gusty winds. we've been able to spike up to 60 degrees. that was after .4 of an inch of rainfall. a couple sprinkles may sneak in to our far northwest suburbs but rain is not the problem. really it was just the last couple hours where the window opened for the stronger winds.

now a wind gust at wrightstown at 43 miles per hour. these are the type of gusts we're going to see through the day tomorrow. they've ramped up in a hurry and that's why the wind advisory will go until 6:00 tomorrow evening. the winds are cranking up in a hurry. be aware of those winds on the bridges and overpasses. gusts of 50 miles per hour can bring down tree limbs. that can happen later on this evening and the wind won't back off until tomorrow evening. much more in the 7-day forecast. right now the wind isn't bad with the 60-degree numbers but it will get blustery and we'll talk wind chills in the forecast. a quick thinking cabby lucky to be alive tonight after he was shot in the face. the driver in east orange managed to remain conscious and drive himself to police headquarters. eyewitness news reporter mallory hoff is live in newark. she spoke exclusively with the driver's twin brother. >> he's being treated here and his brother told me this afternoon that he will in fact make a recovery.

in the meantime, this is a cab company that's all too familiar with this scenario. >> reporter: this was the scene after a driver for classic taxi was shot in the face while on the job in east orange early this morning. family members say 43-year-old ellie duke collins is from haiti. >> it's a big city. where a lot of people carry a gun. >> reporter: the owner operated taxi company based in newark with over 200 cars is not unfamiliar with the dangers drivers face. in august of 2015, classic taxi driver 45-year-old rodrigo beru was shot and killed while working in newark. a 14-year-old was later charged with his murder. in this morning's case the dispatcher got a call for a pickup at one davis place. >> my coworker received a call, a female asking for a car.

at that location he was shot in the face. in the moments that followed, he was able to drive himself to easter orange police department about three blocks away. this map provided by classic taxi outlines the route he took. when he got to the police department, emergency medical services took him to the hospital in newark. a friend who owns the car and rents it to collins to drive overnight wants answers. >> want to know what happened exactly. >> reporter: now collins' twin recalls the words he often sends his brother off with. >> one thing, i'll always repeatedly tell my brother be careful. >> family members tell us they want more they want answers tonight. there are no suspects. no arrests have been made. mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. right now warnings about a serial attacker in brooklyn who targets elderly women.

posters all around the kensington neighborhood. the site of his most recent attack saturday afternoon. here's a closer look at the man police want to find. eyewitness news reporter cefaan kim spoke last night exclusively with the latest victim. tonight he's in kensington with new information about the search for the suspects. >> the attacks happened in broad daylight. all the incidents are violent. in most cases he's stolen several hundred dollars in cash, but what he's really stolen is a sense of security. >> sounded pretty nervous. so i'm looking around corners and things like that. yes, i didn't have any reason before but now i see there are people out there close by. >> reporter: 84-year-old erin says she's never been attacked before so she says she's never had any reason to feel unsafe or look over her shoulder until now.

targeting elderly women has struck again, doing this to stendal's face, breaking her nose and her sense of security. >> he needs somebody to just grab him and put him somewhere where he can't get out like jail. >> reporter: police believe she's now the latest victim of this man, a suspect tied to five attacks against elderly women going back to january. his pattern is becoming clear. in each case he follows them home in broad daylight at gunpoint or knifepoint, demands money. he pistol whipped a 71-year-old woman in park splitting her lip. on march 2nd in the same neighborhood, he followed a 91-year-old woman in the library, putting her in a chokehold. >> i said leave me alone. i'm a sickly woman. leave me alone. he choked me. give me the money, give me the money. i don't have the money. >> reporter: on march 19th in

cutter and a handgun to rob an 81-year-old woman. 84-year-old van stendal attacked saturday. investigators say he's a large man, 250 pounds, about 5'10", about 40 to 60 years old. erik adams is pleading for help. >> this person is among us. there's a photo of him. we're asking the public, please give us information. >> there's a sizable award money for information leading to his arrest. $2500 from crimestoppers and several thousand more from the borough president. cefaan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. the man who shot a suffolk county police officer will spend decades behind bars. a judge sentenced 23-year-old sheldon to 55 years in prison this morning.

officer mark collins last march in huntington station. collins said the shooting will not interrupt his dream of protecting and serving the public. >> i still have lingering side effects but i'm not going to let them hold me back from doing what i love to do. i always dreamed of being a police officer. i wasn't going to let somebody take that away from me. >> the shooting happened as officer collins tried to handcuff him and then a chase. new charges linked to the terror attacks in belgium. three more people are in police custody after police conducted a number of raids. six suspects have been charged with participating in terror offenses. authorities released new video of the man investigators believed to be the third airport attacker. police once again asking for the public's help in identifying him. meanwhile, four patients who were hospitalized after the attacks died overnight from their injuries. bringing the death toll for the

new video has surfaced of two of the attackers partying in a nightclub. abdeslam clearly visible with a cigarette in his hand. his brother salah, dressed in a sweatshirt, would be the only member of the cell to survive. the video was taken eight months before the attacks. global condemnation after an attack in pakistan. pope francis among the world leaders calling the suicide bombing vile and abominable. most of the 70 people killed were christians including many women and children. today in brooklyn, an interfaith attacks. evil soul. religion. mistake. let's not call it a one faith or religions problem. this is a problem of the world.

>> a faction of the pakistani taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they deliberately meant to target christians celebrating easter. several new jersey lawmakers want all public schools in the state to immediately test drinking water for lead contamination. senate president steve sweeney and two democratic state senators propose new legislation today. they say their bill would put $3 million toward water tests. the moves comes after elevated lead levels were detected in the water at 30 schools in newark. newark's mayor is holding a forum tonight where the public can ask leaders about the lead crisis. less than an hour from now, workers and labor advocates will rally at the new york state capitol to raise the minimum wage. the group is holding a 24-hour vigil in support cuomo's proposal to raise it to $15. the governor wants the measure included in the state budget which lawmakers hope to finish this week.

we're back and we continue to follow the big story in washington. a gunman taken in to custody. lauren, i have to wonder are people a little bit calmer? are they feeling a little bit more at ease? >> the entire u.s. capitol on lockdown this afternoon. you can see parts are still closed after shots were fired at the visitor's center complex. we're just learning more about the suspect himself. he's identified as larry dawson from tennessee. very scary moments recounted in the visitor's center at the time

people saying it was pandemonium, guns were drawn, capitol police carrying ar-15s saying get out, get out. people lying on the floor for 15 to 20 minutes. capitol police shot the suspect who was transported to a hospital. as i said, the entire capitol was on lockdown. i should mention the house and senate are both on recess and in a press conference a short time ago, capitol police saying this was an isolated incident with no threat to the public. time is running out to save atlantic city so says new jersey governor chris christie. he wants state legislators to approve a pair of bills to help the financially plagued resort city. prieto won't put the measures up for vote unless the governor drops a provision that allows the state to cancel public employee union contracts. governor christie says he and

very pretty with the sun glistening off the east river. but it is gusty. we're at 60 right now. and the west wind went from 8 miles per hour last hour to gusting to 36. so it's ramping up in a hurry. it's really a whoosh of wind. 60 degrees. 6 degrees above average. third of an inch of rainfall. there are your sunrise and sunset times. last year in the state had a little snow and 40 degrees. so the temperatures right now have responded to the west wind in the low and middle 60s. island is climbing out of the 40s. same thing connecticut, in to the 50s over the next hour. there's your gust at newark. likely to start seeing delays as we go in to the evening at the area airports if not already. a gust over 40 at wrightstown and gusting to near 40 miles per hour the delaware water gap and our western suburbs. this is actually conservative as we go through the overnight. gusts 50 miles per hour in to the day tomorrow and the wind chills tomorrow morning will generally be in the 30s. it will only feel like 40s during the afternoon hours even though we're forecasting a high

there's our rain from this morning. there's still other showers that are going to pivot through our northern suburbs, maybe in sussex, orange, putnam, northern westchester slight chance of seeing a shower. what's happening is you've got two lows and they're merging together as they turn in to a more powerful storm, these winds are going to continue to whip and only get stronger as we get through the overnight in to tomorrow. only as this high gets closer will the winds subside so we've got a gusty 24 hours ahead, 24 to 30 hours. a forecast, a futurecast overnight, not a big deal here. the numbers are irk withing in the 50s and the skies are fine. it's all about that gusty wind. 40 in belmar. these numbers feel like 30s. you go outside, a gusty wind making it feel like low and middle 40s. partly cloudy and windy and chilly tonight. 41. high at 52. but 50-mile-per-hour gusts will make it feel like 40s.

with some kind of mysterious ailment, sports anchor rob powers in the news room. >> he won't pitch tomorrow. the mets say they won't make any promises about opening day either. matt harvey with an unspecified medical issue said to be unrelated to baseball. manager terry collins says harvey's arm is fine but he's not at liberty to disclose anything else. mets tell us it's a non-baseball-related issue. this came up this morning. it's being evaluated now. mets caution fans not to assume anything, but they're not saying anything more. we'll talk more about this at 6:00. hopefully have more information from the mets before the week is out. opening day sunday. >> around the corner. >> we hope he's okay. protests in north carolina, they're part of the growing outcry over the passage of a bill called hb2. >> among other things, it requires transgender people to

biological sex, despite their gender identification. already a federal lawsuit has been filed. >> abc's elizabeth hur has the story. >> reporter: calling his decision based on sound judgment and solid reason, georgia governor nathan deal says he will not sign off on the state's controversial religious liberty bill. >> that is the character of georgia. i intend to do my part to keep it that way. >> reporter: the bill would have allowed clergy to refuse to perform same-sex marriages and protect churches in groups that decline services to someone based on their faith. >> today we're letting them know, no. you will not do that to us. >> reporter: in north carolina, a similar bill that became law just last week is now headed to court. the aclu and advocacy groups are

new at 5:00, we're hearing from the postal worker who was handcuffed on the job and issued a summons for disorderly conduct. >> the nypd commissioner says after viewing the video, he's not happy with the behavior of the officers. internal affairs is now investigating. >> eyewitness news reporter lauren glassberg spoke with the postal worker just moments ago. she's live for us in downtown brooklyn. >> that postal worker is 27 years old. he's been a postal worker for two years doing this route in crown heights. he's from fort greene. and he says what happened to him was extreme and that the officers overstepped their bounds and that he was targeted. >> it was very traumatizing. this is something that i will never ever forget. >> reporter: postal worker glen grays is fuming mad.

with four plain clothes officers inside. then they arrested him. all while he was trying to deliver the mail in crown heights. >> the car nearly took my legs out. if i would have stepped out, i gave them a piece of my mind. they gave me a piece of theirs. and the physical stuff was soon after. >> as he tried to deliver a package at 999 president street, he was pulled away and ultimately cuffed. that was caught on camera and seen millions of time. the police commissioner commented. >> i was not happy with some of the behavior i saw on that video or videos. >> reporter: adams, who brought this to light a week ago, hopes to see some action. >> not only was he traumatized but the community was traumatized. >> reporter: police have gathered surveillance video from

part of their review but anthony saw it in person. >> it was not called for. second, it was not professional. third, it tells me that you believe that because you got the badge and the gun that you is above the law. there's nobody above the law. >> reporter: meanwhile, a colleague has taken over grays' postal route, and grays, who's never been arrested before, is dealing with a summons for disorderly conduct. >> i thought it would be different if i put the eagle on my chest and have a sky blue uniform and go to work every day, that situations would be looked at different. but obviously i wasn't. >> glen grays said he'd like to see some justice, disciplinary action taken against those officers. we want to let you know when they were on route to the precinct where they issued the summons, the officers got in to a car accident and grays had to go to the hospital to get himself checked out the

deadly shooting of a teenager. 16-year-old juwan tavarezdiedjuwan yesterday. --yesterday. a 20-year-old apparently shot in a drive by shooting. a car pulled up and began firing at javel stewart. it's not clear if stewart was the intended target but it does not appear to be random. neighbors say the shooting has shaken up the community. >> i've been here for quite some time in the community and this block is pretty quiet. family community. we've never seen anything like this happen here. like i said, it's just a tragedy all together. >> police still searching for the gunman. mayor richard thomas released a statement saying a community meeting will be held next week

thousands of people are trying to bring back a controversial film to the tribeca film festival. days ago the festival's co-founder announced vaxxed would not be screened. it promises to expose the link between certain vaccinations and an increase in autism. people have started a change.org petition to show it. the museum has not opened yet but one of its exhibits is already causing a controversy. comedian bill cosby is recognized in the taking the stage exhibition and the new york times reports there's no mention of the many sexual assault accusations against cosby. curators say they feel his achievements should stand alone. the museum is set to open in september in washington, d.c. cosby as denied the accusations.

duke farms eagle cam in hills borough. the first hatched saturday. the second hatched this morning. a total of 22 eaglets have been born there since the nest was discovered 11 years ago. the nest was actually destroyed during sandy but the eagles built a new one. >> they rebuild. >> fantastic. >> how many eagle cams do we have? >> seems like we've had a lot of eagle video lately. >> it's never enough. >> we love the eagle videos. i don't think mom was sending them out in this weather. >> they need to stay in that nest for a little while. >> that nest was rocking back and forth. gusts over 50 miles per hour. when you reach a threshold at 50 miles per hour, that's when you can get downed tree limbs. 30, 40 miles per hour, not all that bad. outside we go with an increasing wind and gorgeous look at the harbor right now. miss liberty getting a front row seat to a beautiful sunset but also a very gusty wind. we're at 60.

10 miles per hour, to 40 miles per hour. look at the wind gusts at newark and elizabeth at 47 miles per hour. clearly we're going to have some delays at the area airports right now. our winds are only gusting to 10 miles per hour on long island. near the delaware water gap we're seeing 40-mile-per-hour winds down to the philly area right now. the winds will continue to gust as we go through the evening hours. wind advisory goes through the day tomorrow. temperatures will be dropping through the 50s this evening. during the day tomorrow 35 to 45-mile-per-hour gusts. numbers chilly in the morning. low 50s in the afternoon will feel like 40s. here's your wake-up wind chills tomorrow. feels like 18 in monticello tomorrow morning. 30 in islip. 28 in white plains and 32 in the park. after we have that chilly morning, the numbers will come up in the low 50s during the afternoon hours.

warning about fast and furious thieves. >> crews of brazen burglars crashing in to businesses in the dead of night. in one case they stole cars and another, weapons. the thieves have been caught on camera but they're still on the run. >> brandi hitt joins us from los angeles. >> we're seeing a rash of these burglaries from coast to coast. many of the crimes taking place in less than 2 minutes. very quick. experts say that's where the thieves often get tripped up. they're moving so fast they don't cover their tracks and leave valuable evidence behind. >> reporter: watch these 10 young thieves swarm a tampa, florida car dealership while one runs inside. surveillance cameras rolling as police say he takes the lock box containing keys and hands them out. the crooks then drive off the lot with eight vehicles early friday morning. the entire heist taking just two minutes. >> this is a daily event across the country. >> reporter: two days later another group of thieves rammed a truck through this ventura, california gun store.

smashing the gas cases and running off with loads of hand guns and rifles before the owner arrived. >> i had two of my cousins come out with me. we were armed and ready for anything that could have happened after the robbery. >> it's a big concern for us at this point. any time guns get in the wrong hands. >> reporter: earlier this month a similar burglary in houston. the door to this gun store ripped off by a pickup truck. police say 10 men ransacked the place, taking assault rifles, shot guns and hand guns. in and out in one minute 11 seconds. three of the accused suspects are now behind bars. >> the likelihood that they'll get caught is fairly high because they are so unsophisticated and sloppy. >> reporter: police in tampa have already located two of the vehicles stolen friday and are now testing for any forensic evidence left behind. >> investigators believe that same group of car thieves could be tied to a multi-car burglary.

bloodied and bruised. an 84-year-old woman with a broken nose is now the latest victim of a string of brutal attacks targeting the elderly. police tonight say they want the suspect off the streets before he finds yet another victim. >> first we continue to follow breaking news. capitol police shoot a man inside the visitor's center after he pulls what appeared to be a gun. >> good evening at 6:00. i'm liz cho. bill is off tonight. capitol police say the man appeared what appeared to be a gun at officers and they shot him. the wounded man was taken to the hospital. police say he is someone who is known to them. an innocent bystander, a woman suffered minor injuries in the incident. she is also at the hospital at this hour. the shooting happened inside the visitor's center where people are screened before entering the

dolan is in the news room with the latest. >> larry russell dawson calmly went through the long line that led to the metal detectors of the visitor's center. when he went through, the alarm went off. that is when normal ended at the capitol because according to police, dawson pulled what appeared to be a handgun and just as quickly the police pulled theirs and they fired. gunshots rang out at the visitor's center. within seconds the whole complex was put in lockdown mode. people scrambled to find safe ground. dawson was shot, his weapon recovered. a woman also in line was hit by shrapnel in the gunfire. it's not clear if dawson fired any shots but he was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries. if there was some mission behind his madness, police aren't saying yet. but he's being described as a criminal and not as a terrorist. for the people there, sure was terrifying. >> we ran out and then as we were coming out, they said get
